It’s October and the weather is getting cooler, the leaves are changing color, the holidays are just around the corner and Halloween is on the 31st. Below are 13 interesting facts about Halloween:1,2
1.
Halloween’s origins come from a Celtic festival for the dead called “Samhain.” Celts believed the ghosts of the dead roamed Earth on this day, so people would dress in costumes and leave “treats” out on their front doors to appease the roaming spirits.

It was once believed that Halloween was the perfect day to find a soulmate. In some parts of Ireland, people celebrated Halloween by playing romantic fortune-telling games, which supposedly predicted who they would marry and when.

In a few American towns, Halloween was originally referred to as “Cabbage Night,” which came from a Scottish fortune-telling game, where girls used cabbage stumps to predict information about their future husbands.

Halloween is the second highest grossing commercial holiday after Christmas.

Jack O’Lanterns were once made out of turnips, beets and potatoes, not pumpkins. According to Irish legend, Jack O’Lanterns are named after a stingy man named Jack who was forbidden entrance into both heaven and hell because he tricked the devil several times. He was condemned to wander the earth, waving his lantern to lead people away from their paths.

The word "witch" comes from the Old English wicce, meaning "wise woman." Wiccan were once highly respected people. It is believed that witches held one of their two main meetings on Halloween night.

Halloween is short for "Hallows' Eve" or "Hallows' Evening," which is the evening before All Hallows' (sanctified or holy) Day or Hallowmas on November 1.

Black and orange are typically associated with Halloween. Orange is a symbol of strength and endurance and, along with brown and gold, stands for the harvest and autumn. Black is typically a symbol of death and darkness and acts as a reminder that Halloween once was a festival that marked the boundaries between life and death.

Scarecrows, which are associated with Halloween, symbolize the ancient agricultural origins of the tradition.
10. Halloween is known as All Hallows Eve, Witches Night, Lamswool, Snap-Apple Night, Samhaim, and Summers End. 11. Mexico celebrates the Day of the Dead on the All Saints Day (November 1) and All Souls Day (November 2). People dress up like ghouls and parade down the street. 12. Halloween is thought to have originated around 4,000 BC (or BCE), which means Halloween has been around for over 6,000 years. 13. Decoration Ideas
1. Cut out and use the rectangle as a stand by gluing the paper doll in the center between the two dashed lines and folding the stand on the dashed lines. Use your decoration to place on a desk, near Halloween snacks, or anywhere you want to make more festive. 2. Cut out the decorations and use string or thread to join the paper dolls by their hats and use as hanging decorations.
3. Tape the cut out decorations on the wall.
