Note from the Editor The 12 days of Christmas are celebrated from December 25 through January 5. The following explains the traditional meaning of each of the 12 days of Christmas:1,2 Day 1: Day 2: Day 3: Day 4:
Christmas Day, the celebration of the birth of Christ. The feast of St. Stephen, who was the first Christian martyr. The feast of St. John the Apostle, a friend and disciple of Jesus. The feast of the Holy Innocents, a remembrance of when King Herod ordered all baby boys to be killed in his attempt to find and kill Jesus when He was a baby. Day 5: Remembrance of St. Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury in the 12th century who was assassinated in his cathedral. Day 6: Remembrance of St. Egwin of Worcester, the protector of orphans and the widowed, who died on December 30, 717.3 Day 7: New Year's Eve, celebration of Pope Sylvester I, one of the first popes. Day 8: Celebration of Mary, the Mother of Jesus. Day 9: The feasts of St. Basil the Great and St. Gregory Nazianzen, two monks who were friends and studied together. Day 10: The feast of the Holy Name of Jesus. Day 11: Remembrance of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first American saint. Day 12: Remembrance of St. John Neumann, a 19th century bishop.
