Note from the Editor
The origin of Black History month began 1926 when Dr. Carter G. Woodson, a graduate of Harvard University, founded Negro History Week. Dr. Woodson felt that African Americans were ignored and not properly respected in history. He chose Negro History Week to be observed in the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. In 1976, Negro History Week evolved into Black History Month.
Dr. Woodson also established the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History in 1915, and the Journal of Negro History in 1916. He also wrote several books, one of which was, "The Miseducation of the Negro," published in 1933.1 In honor of Black History, this month’s featured paper doll is the Shirley Chisholm (November 30, 1924 – January 1, 2005) Paper Doll. Chisholm was a trailblazer: she was the first woman to run for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination, she was the first black candidate for a major party's nomination for President of the United States, and she was the first black woman elected to the United States Congress.2 Chisholm’s public service career included volunteering for the League of Women Voters and sponsoring the introduction of the Search for Education, Elevation and Knowledge (SEEK) Program, which offers disadvantaged students the opportunity to enter college by providing academic and financial support to students meeting specific income and academic criteria.3,4 As part of the United States Congress, Chisholm worked on many projects to help improve the lives of fellow citizens.
