Note from the Editor This month’s issue of Treasures includes the Julia Comstock Field Paper Doll. Julia (1856-1936) was the wife of wellknown newspaper columnist and poet, Eugene Field, whose father was one of the attorneys for Dred Scott.1 Atypical of housewives in the 1800s, Julia took care of all of the family finances, in addition to raising five children. After her husband’s sudden death in 1895, Julia never remarried and made a living for herself and her children by copyrighting many of Eugene’s works. She was also a woman of society, most notably being a juror at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis. Julia’s legacy continues today at the Field House Museum in St. Louis, which is the birthplace of her husband Eugene.2
