WELCOME TO THE STAGECOACH INN!
n 1861, W. B. Armstrong, one of the area’s first settlers, erected this building on the footprint of the old Tonkawa village and opened the “Shady Villa Hotel.” It is believed that the Stagecoach Inn is the oldest remaining structure in Salado. Many varied and distinguished persons found food and rest inside these walls: Sam Houston, General George Custer, Robert E. Lee, Jr., cattle barons Shanghai Pierce and Charles Goodnight, and outlaws Sam Bass and Jesse James. Learn more about the Stagecoach Inn’s long history in Salado. The Stagecoach Inn’s reputation has endured over the years and through generations of families who’ve celebrated many important occasions inside these historic walls. The restaurant’s menu has been updated to reflect modern dining habits and preferences, and its hotel rooms and grounds have been renovated with a mixture of mid-century Palm Springs and Texas ranch aesthetics; however, the core Stagecoach Inn experience remains as tribute to the rich history and authenticity of the Stagecoach Inn.

n 1825, Major Sterling C. Robertson acquired lands grants from Mexico north of the Stephen F. Austin colony and is credited with bringing 600 families to this area. Most of these families were Scots and formed the first large group of settlers in Central Texas. In 1960, Mrs. Sterling Robertson, as Secretary and Program Chairperson of the Central Texas Area Museum, created a program to recognize the diverse nationalities that settled this area. Because of the priority of their arrival, she believed the Scots should be accorded priority of representation.

To fulfill her vision, the Museum trustees, with the support of many interested Scots, planned the First Annual Gathering of All Scottish Clans. 40 clans answered the call and gathered in historic Salado on November 12, 1961. Tartan banners waved from 8-foot poles bearing the name of each clan and well over one thousand people attended. For 58 years, representatives of the Scottish Clans have gathered here on the second weekend in November to honor the history and traditions of Scotland…making the Salado Scottish Gathering the oldest Scottish festival in Texas. We invite you to come party with the Scots! The three-day event includes bagpipe bands, Scottish athletics, Highland dancing, Celtic music, Clans ‘n Bands Parade, Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan, pet parade, Texas Tattoo, shopping, food and fun. One of the event’s main features is the Clan Village, the largest gathering of Scottish Clan tents in Texas where Clan members share information about Scottish history and family genealogy.

A
ccording to legend, a young maiden made a bargain with a magical catfish for the love of a particular brave.
She married the young warrior, but for one year, at every full moon, she had to swim with the catfish as a mermaid. And, if any human saw her, she would remain a mermaid forever. Alas, on the night of the 12th full moon, a hook caught in her tail fins and she crawled onto the bank to remove it. Her husband spotted her, and the catfish triumphantly dragged her back into the water. She may swim forever beneath the waters of Salado Creek. The family friendly event started with a parade that begun at Pace Park. It was held in honor of the mermaid and at the same time to recognize local artists Jackie Mills, author, and Troy Kelley, sculptor. After the parade, people spread along the south bank of the Salado Creek to enjoy the festivities. There are mermaids in the creek, stilt walkers, giant bubbles, and jugglers. Also present are face painters, food trucks, arts & activities; and everyone had fun playing games, listening to live music and take part in mermaid-related photo ops. Ultimately, the goal of the Sirena Festival is to educate children about creek habitat and wildlife (conservation) and raise money for a local nonprofit.

Come & Explore VARIOUS ART IN THE OUTDOOR SCULPTURE GARDEN.

alado has long been known for its beautiful Salado Creek, unique shopping experience and outstanding art and artists. Â
The garden is the vision of the Public Arts League of Salado and Keep Salado Beautiful. It is situated in a lovely natural landscape connected by gentle walkways and seating all through the area making fine art accessible to everyone and where one can view the creativity of a diverse group of artists - varying ages, life experiences, male and female - living and working locally and regionally. This first exhibit will showcase many of the celebrated Salado artists. The artists that will have sculptures in this inaugural exhibit are Ronnie Wells of Salado and Bob Guelich of San Antonio, both who have found inspirations in the natural environment, especially wildlife. Well known Salado artists, Sandra and Lonnie Edwards; Sandra who is an inspired stone sculptor and Lonnie, an artist that works in bronze, copper, stainless steel and wrought iron. Also from Salado are Jill and Johnny Shipman, multi-

talented artists who have designed and collaborated on the entrance piece to the Sculpture Garden with Melissa Paxton, a glass artist. Other Salado sculptors are Troy Kelley who is renowned as the artist of Sirena, the mermaid in Salado Creek and has the piece Handicapped Mask in this exhibit, and Aaron Gist who does cast stone and steel work. Other artists are Bob Rynearson of Temple who carves in marble and limestone; Dan Pogue of Marble Falls who sculpts in clay and casts his work in bronze and Richard Mocco (1942-2010) whose steel work was shown nationwide. Images of stone, bronze and steel will fill the open space. The sculpture art is on loan during the exhibition for several months and will change from time to time. Most of the art is for sale. The garden was designed with the help of Texas Master Gardeners and Master Naturalists and will in the future become a certified Texas Wildscape. Pocket gardens of drought-tolerant native plants are incorporated amongst the trees and the wandering dry creek that meanders through the meadow. The pocket gardens were established to provide seasonal color and to attract wildlife. Salado can be proud of this new venture to integrate art into the daily lives of local residents and visitors to the community.
