Willkommen! Yes, we are extremely proud of our German heritage. As the grandson of German immigrants, I treasure the rich history of the Texas Hill Country. I know you will find this place special, too. Boerne is home to the one and only Hill Country Mile, and you can’t miss it! Take a stroll along historic Main Street to experience the great boutique shopping, casual and fine dining, and our new public art display, “Art al Fresco”, an outdoor or “fresh air” exhibit of public art located throughout our historic downtown and along Boerne’s Trail system. There is always something going on whether it is a free concert at Main Plaza or a parade, festival or one of many family-friendly events that change throughout the seasons. You can get just about anywhere in the heart of Boerne using our great trail and sidewalk systems, so wear comfy shoes and start exploring! For a unique back-to-nature experience, be sure to visit the award-winning Cibolo Nature Center nestled along Cibolo Creek. If you happen to be here on the second weekend of the month, you can visit the Boerne Market Days vendors at Main Plaza. Then, on Saturday evening, don’t miss 2nd Saturday Art & Wine and visit the Hill Country Mile art galleries. Boerne also has fantastic outdoor recreation and attractions including hiking, biking, motorcycling, kayaking, caving, museums, wineries, golf courses and sporting facilities, and our surrounding hills provide a breathtaking backdrop. We are so glad that you are here, and we know you will have a great time. You might even decide to make Boerne your new home.

BOERNE Hill Country Mile Nestled at the edge of the Texas Hill Country, Boerne is a small Germanheritage town that has retained much of its Old World Charm despite its close proximity to San Antonio. German immigrants first settled this land along the Cibolo Creek over 150 years ago, and its European beginnings are still evident in the old stone buildings with narrow windows, steep gables, outside stairways and gardens. Today, more than 140 historic structures remain and many along Boerne’s famous Hill Country Mile have been lovingly restored and repurposed as restaurants, bakeries, antique malls, home décor stores, clothing boutiques, specialty stores and art galleries. In addition to our renowned shopping, Boerne is filled with a variety of dining options that range from casual to finedining, and the past few years have seen

some excellent brew pubs, wine bars, microbreweries and sophisticated taverns enter the scene. We are also home to a great variety of lodging options that range from quaint B&B’s to family-friendly chains to upscale brands and unique, historic properties. We boast some excellent outdoor wedding venues, and a world-class resort, Tapatio Springs Hill Country Resort, featuring a breathtaking 18-hole golf course and all the amenities that you would desire in a fine luxury lodging venue including an on-site spa, PureSol Spa, that offers Texas’ only therapeutic salt cave. Great outdoor attractions including the nationally recognized Cibolo Nature Center, and two area caves—Cave Without a Name and Cascade Caverns, whose spectacular formations have earned them both national designations as National Natural Landmarks. For those who are interested in the history of the area, Boerne Walking Tours is set to take guests on a 90-minute journey down historic Main Street with tales of legends, lore, ghostly haunts, and architectural history. Tours will be offered on select dates throughout the holiday season, with the regular schedule debuting in early 2017.

Many spas offer similar services, with slight variations in décor, services offered, and localized treatment options. And then there’s Puresól Spa—the only spa in Texas with an authentic, therapeutic salt cave where guests enter through the cave’s door, relax on a spa lounger while surrounded by soothing music, and emerge not only more relaxed and tension-free, but healthier.

His daughter would be influenced to continue her father’s quest for wellness. After moving to the United States more than two decades ago, Beata began her career as an aesthetician in Florida and opened her first spa in the city of Boca Raton before calling Boerne home.

Puresól Salt Cave has its roots in Poland, home to the Wieliczka Salt Mine, where 1 million international visitors annually seek treatment in the mine’s rehabilitation rooms for treatment of respiratory, cardiovascular and stress-related illnesses. The climate is rich in negative ions, minerals and micro-elementary particles that are naturally absorbed into the lungs as you breathe in the ion-drenched air. Puresol Spa’s owner, Beata Huzarska, grew up as the daughter of the leading professor at the prestigious AGH University of Mining and Metallurgy in Poland. In addition, Beata’s father was an expert consultant in the field of mine designing and development. He began to notice that workers in the nearby salt mines did not suffer from the same ailments over time as those who worked in the coal mines, and he would begin to take an intense

The dream of an American-based salt cave was realized with the 2013 opening of Puresól Spa, whose salt cave was constructed using more than 20 tons of salt harvested directly from the Wieliczka Salt Mine. Located on the grounds of luxurious Tapatio Springs Hill Country Resort, Puresol is also a full service spa for both men and women that offers specialized massage, body treatments, anti-aging facials, Microdermabrasion, waxing and custom packages. Puresól Spa also offers its own imported line of eco-certified, organic skin care products whose pure ingredients are sourced from Europe. HISTORY Hill Country Mile Boerne was settled in 1849 by a group of German immigrants who brought with them their own language, customs and music, much of which is still alive over 150 years later. The settlers first called their town Tusculum. In 1852, Gustav Theissen and John James laid out the town’s site and changed the name to “Boerne” in honor of Karl Ludwig Borne, a German author and publicist who inspired many young Germans to leave their homeland and travel to the new world. Ironically, Mr. Borne never visited the town that was named after him. Today, a statue of him graces the entrance to the Boerne Visitor Center.

a hotel and polo club and has now been gorgeously restored to The Legendary Texas Polo Club at Phillip Manor Square and Captain Turquand’s Saloon. In fact, legend has it that the first polo match in the United States was played just outside of Boerne.

There are more than 140 other historical buildings around town, and recently some of Boerne’s treasured jewels have been painstakingly restored to their architectural pasts including the Joseph Dienger Building (1890), which today serves as the home of the Dienger Trading Co. and Phillip Manor Square (1866), which began as a private residence and later became the home of the early Boerne Shooting Club, as well as 10 | VisitBoerne.org

Additionally, the Carstanjen-Hall Mansion (1876), which was a private home as well as a variety of restaurants over the years, was recently purchased and completely restored back to its original glory. And be sure to kick off the holiday season Thanksgiving weekend at Dickens on Main, when the Hill Country Mile is transformed into a winter wonderland! CIBOLO CREEK BREWING CO. Cibolo Creek Brewing Co. is a great new addition to Boerne’s brew pub scene, and it is a favorite gathering place for locals, as well as visitors! Housed in a renovated historic cottage on Boerne’s Main Street, Cibolo Creek Brewing Co. offers casual front porch seating that evokes a “beer garden” atmosphere, but with a much cooler vibe. A sophisticated pub menu features farm-to-market selections that include popular cheese and meat boards, as well as made-inhouse pickles that perfectly pair with one of the best burgers in town! While the food is getting great attention, the real focus here is the selection of 6 different house beers that are brewed on site. There is also a rotating selection of “guest beers”, as well as wine and cider. Community-length tables inside allow larger groups to gather and watch their favorite teams on the big

screen, and smaller, more intimate tables offer a great date night! The family owned and operated brew pub radiates a happy atmosphere with attentive servers, and the no-tipping policy is a welcome surprise. Visitors often spend memorable evenings mingling with the local crowd after a long day of shopping along Boerne’s Hill Country Mile.

APACHE RIFLEWORKS Apache Rifleworks was started by a Vietnam Veteran and his son, a former Firefighter/EMT and Tactical Medic. Named “Apache” as an honor to the devoted, fearless nature of the Apache Indians, the “warrior nature” of their namesake is a value that is shared by the men and women who make up the Apache employee family who all share a common passion for guns. Extreme customer service is what sets this company apart from the standard gun range, and they can’t wait to share their passion and knowledge with you, too! In addition to a full range of rifles, pistols, shotguns, and “custom tools for quality warriors”, they feature a 25-yard, rifle-rated indoor shooting range, custom gun shop and training facility. They also build custom bolt-action rifles suited to the needs of their customers, as well as customizing of AR platform rifles from the

most reliable and durable parts on the market. This gorgeous, ultra-clean facility goes above and beyond to make sure that every single guest who walks through their front door has a safe, fun experience. You can rent a firearm from them, or bring your own and they equip shooters with eye and hearing protection. From Boerne, take IH10W to the Waring Exit (527) and stay on the access road.

One of the unique features is the dam located at the east end of the park. Deeded to the City of Boerne in July 1912, the dam was originally known as the old Dietert Mill Dam. VETERANS PLAZA (801 S. BOERNE TRAILS

Boerne has three diverse trail systems that are popular with locals and visitors. Each of the trail systems has their own unique character, and all offer outstanding opportunities to get close to nature. Amenities vary by trail. The trails have a curfew from 10pm-6am daily. CIBOLO TRAIL (100 N. Main St. (north trailhead), 106 City Park Rd. (south trailhead)) 1.75-miles linear park The Cibolo Trail extends from Ye Kendall Inn trailhead to City Park trailhead at the entrance to the Municipal Pool. The trail follows Boerne’s signature waterway, the Cibolo Creek, and at several points enables users to move in and out of Boerne’s historic downtown and the famed Hill Country Mile. At the confluence of Cibolo and Currey Creeks, a 150-foot pedestrian bridge nestled among the trees offers a birds’eye view of a refreshing waterfall and crystal clear flowing stream. CURREY CREEK TRAIL (1017 Adler St.) 0.5-mile linear park The Currey Creek trailhead located at the Parks & Recreation Offices (1017 Adler Rd) winds 0.5 miles southward to Blanco Rd. This trail connects the Northside Neighborhood Park to several neighborhoods, apartments, and businesses. OLD NO. 9 TRAIL (358 Esser Rd.) 1.4-miles linear park This trail was designed using elements that honor the days of train travel. The motif of the San Antonio & Aransas Pass (SA&AP) railroad has been fused into the Old No. 9 Trail amenities, utilizing some of the more distinctive design elements including the depot shade pavilion at Blanco Rd. which was designed to replicate the outline of the smaller depots of the SA&AP.

COMMUNITY Cibolo Nature Center

Boerne isn’t just a great place to visit-it is also a great place to live & raise a family, or to retire. But don’t just take our word for it: Family Circle Magazine named Boerne as one of the “Ten Best Towns for Families” in their August 2014 edition. Reasons that were cited for our selection include the affordable housing options, the strong sense of community,

and the exemplary school system. Many residents choose to live here even if they work in nearby San Antonio. You will have the small-town camaraderie and clean, open air & congestion-free streets, yet still live close to one of the largest cities in Texas. Come visit us-- & then come back and stay.
