OFFICIAL VISITORS GUIDE - 2019–20 Fall | Winter

SCENE IN HOUSTON In its youthfulness, diversity and explosive growth, Houston looks like the American city of the future – GQ

BIG, BRASH AND BOLD, Houston

means business. It’s the home of the world’s energy industry, the nation’s second busiest port and the world’s largest medical complex – the Texas Medical Center. The city is always growing, changing and evolving – and now it’s more than just business. Today’s Houston is the most diverse city in the country, attracting the best and brightest from around the world with its friendly, open nature and can-do spirit. Just ask Conde Nast Traveler, who says, "There are cities that claim to be melting pots, but they can't compare to Houston." The city’s mix of peoples and traditions has created a serious destination

6

for the arts and a blockbuster food scene. As Goop put it in their 2018 Houston guide, “As for the food, we’ll put it this way: Houston managed to bring home 12 James Beard nominations. And that was just last year.” This guide will give you the inside scoop on where the locals go. You’ve arrived at a great time of year. Fall and winter’s mild temperatures are perfect for al fresco dining, exploring the city’s walkable neighborhoods, biking the local bayous and trails – even watching movies outdoors at Uptown’s Rooftop Cinema Club or downtown’s Discovery Green Park. If you don’t see too many people outside while you’re downtown, there’s a reason for that: they’re underground. A six-mile-long tunnel system, replete with restaurants and retail, links 95 full city blocks 20 feet below the streets.

Anchoring the Museum District is the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston’s sprawling campus (make sure to take a selfie with Houston’s own “Bean” – Anish Kapoor’s “Cloud Column”), as well as the Contemporary Arts Museum of Houston and The Menil Collection, an international jewel that recently expanded with the opening of its Drawing Institute, the fifth building in its serene, park-like campus.

Hermann Park is also home to the Houston Zoo, Miller Outdoor Theater and the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Adventure awaits. As Red Tricycle said in November 2018, “Houston is one of the most diverse cities in the United States. As a result, a family vacation to this famous Texas town is an extraordinary cultural experience.” Get out and start your Houston adventure now – and go where the locals go.

CITY FILE Houston, Texas is weirder than you think and boasts a surprisingly diverse and eclectic art scene. – Raw Travel TV

FALL AND WINTER are great times to explore Houston’s homespun oddities, funky festivals, public art and one-of-a-kind attractions. Live like a local and head off the beaten path for an authentic look at Houston. The Art Car Museum It’s unlike anything you can imagine. The Art Car Museum is the only place you’ll find the antennae-and-wing-cloaked Roachster or a Honda motorcycle that’s been transformed into a shiny red rolling stiletto heel. Beer Can House In 1968, John Milkovisch began covering his house in “aluminum siding” made from 50,000 flattened beer cans. John and his wife, Mary, have since passed away, but the 8

landmark remains open as an exhibition for future generations. Operated by The Orange Show, the Beer Can House remains an odd bungalow oasis in a sea of new townhomes that spring up daily in this neighborhood close to Memorial Park. The Big Bubble If you find yourself on the Preston Street Bridge downtown, you’ll see a button that, when pressed, produces magical results – a huge bubble bursting through the surface of the otherwise calm bayou below. Locals call it the Big Bubble – and it’s unmarked, so keep your eyes peeled. This is really good for kids and can keep them entertained for a while. Buffalo Bayou Kayak Tours Paddle through the heart of the city on a two-person kayak adventure. Spot blue herons, loggerhead turtles, and an occasional alligator sunning along bayou banks during the urban excursion.

bike ride or walk – over to check out colorful works of art along Harrisburg, Canal and Navigation. Selfie opportunities abound. The Heritage Society Explore a historic village in the shadow of downtown Houston’s skyline. The city’s only outdoor, interactive historic museum and park is located on 10 acres of rolling green parkland in the heart of the city. Founded in 1954, the area boasts structures dating from 1823 to 1905, plus a museum building with fascinating historical exhibits. James Turrell Skyspace When the sun goes down, the art comes to life at artist James Turrell’s Twilight Epiphany Skyspace, located on the Rice University campus. A gift to the university in 2012, the interactive structure’s unique, thoughtful use of light and space alters the viewer’s perception of the sky.

Downtown Skyline and Wortham Theater Center

Cockrell Butterfly Center Part of the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Cockrell Butterfly Center is, as its name implies, a glass-enclosed live butterfly habitat and three-story rainforest conservatory built around a 50-foot waterfall. Stop to admire these delicate, beautiful creatures from around the world as they alight on lush vegetation and lucky visitors. Gerald D. Hines Water Wall Take a respite from Galleria shopping at the adjacent, majestic, 64-foot water wall (selfie, anyone?) designed by architects Philip Johnson and John Burgee. Every three hours and two minutes, 78,500 gallons of recycled water pour down the structure’s black obsidian walls. Nice day? Have a picnic in the surrounding three-acre park. East End Street Art More than 25 colorful, eye-popping murals can be found in every nook and cranny of the East End. To discover world renowned artists and local talent telling the East End story and its rich history, do not miss taking a drive – or

Miller Outdoor Theatre On mild evenings, it’s hard to top a professional (and free) show at Miller Outdoor Theatre, located in Hermann Park. Celebrating its 96th year, the amphitheater with both covered and hillside seating is the perfect place to catch classical music, ballet and theater performances from your blanket – with your picnic basket, of course. National Museum of Funeral History Celebrating its 27th year in 2019, the museum proudly holds the title of the nation’s largest display of historic funeral service memorabilia and artifacts. Peek inside a 1920s hearse made from six types of wood. See a brightly colored “fantasy coffin” and an array of funeral paraphernalia. The Orange Show A national folk-art landmark in the East End, The Orange Show took about 25 years for mailman and owner Jeff McKissack to create this orange-themed maze-like monument. Made using concrete, brick, steel and anything else he could find, the 3,000sf folk-art space includes a stage, gift shop, museum, balconies and several upper decks. Don’t miss the adjacent Smither Park, a funky, fun-filled green space with an amphitheater, meditation garden and pavilion. Lots of Instagrammable moments here. is celebrating 25 years of empowering neighbors and artists. With 39 structures set on five city blocks, Project Row Houses offers a place for local artists to learn and work – and in some cases, live. Saint Arnold Brewing Company Visit Texas’s oldest craft brewery in its historic Fifth Ward space near Downtown. Guests can explore the facility, sample brews and host private events. Stay awhile and enjoy the recently opened beer garden and restaurant, an expansive covered outdoor site overlooking the Downtown skyline. Mural-covered indoor “chapels” with tables and seating feature paintings by local artists. Don’t miss the covered garage that hosts their art cars. San Jacinto Battleground Historical Complex The battleground marks the spot where Texas won its independence from Mexico. The park houses the towering obelisk San Jacinto Monument (the tallest masonry column in the world), plus a museum. Take the elevator ride to the top of the monument for a panoramic view of Houston and the Bay Area. Waugh Drive Bat Colony Did you know there is a gigantic natural bat habitat in the heart of the city? Just under the Waugh Drive bridge between Allen Parkway and Memorial Drive, millions of bats make their home. At sunset, they take off from under bridge in one huge group and fly south. For the best view, stake your place on the observation deck located on the corner of Waugh Drive and Allen Parkway. West Alabama Ice House Business professionals and bikers alike love the charm of this 80-year-old Houston tradition. The West Alabama Ice House is well known for its laid-back style, Shiner Bockand-onion-soaked hot dogs and cheap beer. Don’t miss a barbacoa taco from Tacos Tierra Caliente. Bring your canine companion.

Get Neighborly In Houston, neighborhood pride is strong. The city is home to diverse and distinct areas that offer their own unique charms and are definitely worth exploring. Here are four to get you started: HOUSTON HEIGHTS. Named one of the nation's friendliest neighborhoods by National Geographic, this area just northwest of Downtown includes Victorian mansions, Craftsman bungalows and new townhomes alike. The Heights has its own “main street” – 19th Street – with stores, restaurants, coffee shops and the Heights Theater for musical performances. The best way to see it all is on foot or bike. Make sure to explore Heights Boulevard with its ever-changing public art installations.

1

MONTROSE. The long-time home of Houston’s LGBTQ and artist communities, Montrose features grand century-old mansions, new high-rise apartments, duplexes and modest brick bungalows, as well as some of the city’s finest restaurants and cultural attractions. Adjacent to the Museum District, Montrose is home to The Menil Collection and the University of St. Thomas. Find your center while meditating at The Rothko Chapel or play a life-sized game of chess at the The Black Labrador.

2

ASIATOWN on the city’s Southwest side should be one of your prime food destinations. On Bellaire Boulevard, start your day at 85º Café, featuring Asian-inspired pastries, breads and coffee. For lunch or dinner, the choices are endless. Local chefs and regular civilians swear by the spicy crawfish at Crawfish & Noodles. Himalaya Restaurant, known for its Indian and Pakistani cuisine, just might serve the best fried chicken in Houston (it was featured on “Parts Unknown” on CNN.)

3

EAST DOWNTOWN (EaDo) has rapidly transformed itself into a fun place to eat, drink, hang out and live. Cheer on Major League Soccer at BBVA Compass Stadium, take in a concert at Warehouse Live, enjoy some craft brews at 8th Wonder Brewery and make sure to check out the street art lining buildings around every turn. In development: East Village, a large-scale industrial redevelopment project that will offer restaurants, bars, a distillery and creative office space.

ARTS & CULTURE IT’S NO TEXAS BOAST: Houston is serious about the arts. The city features one of the nation’s largest museum districts and serves as one of the few American cities with resident professional companies in ballet, opera, symphony and theater. The 17-block downtown theater district is home to Houston Grand Opera, Alley Theatre, Houston Symphony and Houston Ballet, all of whom consistently present Grammy, Tony, and Emmy award-winning performances. Other area arts organizations include Society For The Performing Arts, Da Camera, The Catastrophic Theatre Company and Theatre Under The Stars, the nation’s largest nonprofit producer of musical theater. Minutes away in Midtown, check out the calendar lineup at MATCH. The state-of-the-art visual and performing arts venue opened in 2015, playing host to more than 50 area arts groups including Main Street Theater and River Oaks Chamber Orchestra. Nearby is the famed Ensemble Theater, presenting African American artistic expression since 1976.

Silos at Sawyer Yards

Southwest of Downtown, in the pedestrianfriendly Museum District, more than 6.6 million annual visitors explore the 19 cultural institutions that make up the tree-lined neighborhood. The district’s anchor and the nation’s sixthlargest art museum – Museum of Fine Arts, Houston – continues to undergo a tremendous campus expansion, with new exhibition, conservation and education spaces, and a master plan that knits together a century’s worth of signature architectural structures. The nearby Contemporary Arts Museum Houston celebrates post-modern artwork inside its distinctive stainless-steel space, while the educational exhibits at Houston Museum of Natural Science unfold within a four-level complex. Do not miss the museum’s Wortham IMAX Theater or the Cockrell Butterfly Center. WHERE TO STAY YOU’VE ARRIVED at the right time! Houston has experienced a recent hotel boom and our new lodgings are sure to impress even the most seasoned traveler. Over by the Galleria luxury shopping district just west of downtown, you’ll find the spectacular, AAA Five Diamond Post Oak Hotel at Uptown, an elaborate showplace where the accommodations, services and amenities are first class. Think Mastro’s Steakhouse, a pool with fountains and fireplaces, an adjacent Rolls Royce showroom and direct helicopter pad access. Farther out west on the way to the Energy Corridor is the Hotel ZaZa Memorial City, the newest anchor in the vast Memorial City mixeduse development brimming with shopping and dining options. The hotel features original artwork, lavish décor, outrageously themed suite, fine dining and a thriving “Beach Club” pool scene. If you’re staying Downtown, you’ll want to check out – and check into – two new jewels,

Lancaster Hotel

C. Baldwin and the Cambria Hotel. Formerly the Doubletree Downtown, C. Baldwin is named for a Houston pioneer, Charlotte Baldwin Allen, who used her inheritance to finance the City of Houston. The centrally located hotel has a signature restaurant, a luxury nail salon, and a downtown outpost of much-loved gift and fashion emporium Sloan/Hall. Housed in a renovated Art Deco skyscraper near Minute Maid Park, the Cambria Hotel features classic Texas charm. This is a great choice for travelers who want to be near the George R. Brown Convention Center. For those who love history and great art from prominent regional artists including James Surls, Terrell James and Mark Flood, nothing beats The Lancaster, recently renovated from top to bottom – and just steps from Jones Hall, The Alley Theatre and the Wortham Theater Center. Its new restaurant, Cultivated F+B, is the perfect pre-show or post-show dinner spot. Be sure to order a martini to accompany their famous crab cakes.

THINK ABOUT HOUSTON RESTAURANTS and what comes to mind? Tex-Mex, barbecue and steaks for sure. But dig a little deeper and you’ll find exciting cuisines of all nationalities all over town – Korean barbeque, Vietnamese crawfish, pho, ramen, interior Mexican, Greek, and even English pub food.

all over town. A few recommendations: the “sizzling fajitas” slathered in butter and garlic at El Real in Montrose; the table-top parilla mixed grill at El Tiempo featuring beef and chicken fajitas, as well as shrimp and quail (add bacon); and local chain Lupe Tortilla, with its limemarinated and tenderized skirt steak recipe.

Ambitious new restaurants are taking their place alongside time-honored local favorites. The award-winning Killen’s Barbecue has opened its first location inside the Loop, on Heights Boulevard. In Rice Village, you’ll find Mendocino Farms, with locally sourced/seasonal cuisine. Close by in Southampton is the trendy Tropicales, with Latin-influenced food, cocktails and coffee. Try to grab one of the outdoor tables.

Tour of Asia

A second location of Postino, the wine and small-bites establishment, has opened in Montrose. Also new in Montrose: Tex-Mex joint Cadente, from the team that owns the nearby Pit Room (look for the line out the door). Enjoy the luxurious and refined surroundings, and exquisitely crafted contemporary Spanish cuisine, at BCN Taste + Tradition, housed in a Montrose mansion. Or explore its gorgeous brand-new sister restaurant, MAD, at River Oaks District, with Instagrammable Spanish/Texas cuisine and delicious cocktails. It’s currently the most talked-about eatery and bar in town.

Tex Mex Capital

Back to the aforementioned Tex-Mex: local legend holds that fajitas were invented at the famed Original Ninfa’s on Navigation and they’re just as delicious today. Now a Tex-Mex staple, you can get great chicken or beef fajitas

22

Phoenicia Specialty Foods

Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Thai… yes! Chinatown in Southwest Houston along Bellaire features Crawfish and Noodles – ground zero for H-town’s famous Viet Cajun crawfish. While you’re in the neighborhood, try Confucius Seafood Restaurant, serving traditional Cantonese food since 2002. Try the Peking duck with steamed buns, and be sure to ask about the two-whole-lobster special. Get your ramen fix at Izakaya or Jinya Ramen Bar in Midtown, Ramen Tatsu-ya in Montrose or Soma Sushi on Washington Ave. And speaking of sushi, local favorite Uptown Sushi recently reopened in Uptown Park, with an interesting Japanesefusion menu, plus bountiful sake and nigiri.

Hit the Heights

The Heights’ once-sleepy restaurant scene is on fire. Near Shepherd and 19th, you’ll find Superica (Tex-Mex) and La Lucha (fried chicken and seafood), as well as Ka Sushi with its Asianfusion cuisine. On Washington Ave., you’ll find the hopping steakhouse B&B Butchers & Restaurant, and its casual cousin B.B Lemon across the street. For seafood, set your course for 1751 Sea and Bar, a newish place on Heights Boulevard with a full raw bar (and full cocktail bar – with more than 100 different gins).

Finn Hall

Another recent development is the growing number of food halls – with diverse global cuisines and cocktails that reflect the city’s population. Most can be found downtown. The underground Conservatory, the city’s first food hall, showcases delicacies from a rotating list of local purveyors – and offers a beer garden with 60 different drafts. Finn Hall at The Jones on Main Street has two bars, plus coffee, and food from Vietnam, Korea, the Mediterranean and the USA. Bravery Chef Hall at Aris Market Square centers around five restaurants, with concepts from Krisp Bird & Batter, Black Hill Ranch and Andes Café, among others. Lyric Market boasts 24 global food tenants and a speakeasy inside the Lyric Centre Parking Garage, plus outside street-level seating. Finally, there’s the brand-new Understory, featuring concepts from East Hampton Sandwich Company, Boomtown Coffee and Mama Ninfa’s Tacos y Tortas, plus a cocktail lounge. Outside of downtown, there’s Railway Heights Market on Washington Avenue, with local produce, meats and seafood, a container farm and beer garden. It also hosts a farmers market every Saturday and Sunday. And opening in October in Rice Village, Politan Row will be a mid-century gem with a mix of local food and beverage talent. NIGHTLIFE HOUSTON COMES ALIVE AT NIGHT with centrally set concert venues, laid back lounges and linger-worthy bars, so no matter what scene you’re seeking, you’re sure to find it here.

Downtown and Midtown

Houston’s central business district is booming with bars, clubs and lounges. Market Square is Ground Zero for fun. Drink in the history at La Carafe, the city’s oldest (and maybe haunted) bar. Nearby you’ll find the old-school Warren’s Inn, where cheap and strong drinks draw both hipsters and hardcore juicers. Get your tropical tiki fix (order the Painkiller) at Kanaloa, and enjoy their Korean-fusion snacks. In Midtown, claim a hammock at Axelrad, or be the star of the show at Spotlight Karaoke or Glitter Karaoke, both on Milam Street.

Montrose

Traditionally home to “alternative” nightlife and the city’s LGBTQ club scene, Montrose is where you’ll find longtime LGBTQ watering hole JR’s Bar and Grill, plus Rudyard’s live music venue, classic dive bar Lola’s, and Present Company, reportedly the city’s most Instagrammable new cocktail venue. A second location of wine bar Postino just opened across the street from JR’s. For craft cocktails, head to Anvil Bar and Refuge. Feel like hanging out on a patio with a

32

neighborhood cast of characters? Then Poison Girl is for you.

River Oaks and West University

In between these two affluent neighborhoods, you’ll find On the Kirb, a sports bar and gastropub with healthy food. Social types and pretty people pop their corks at A’Bouzy, the buzzy champagne bar with reasonable wine prices. Over in West University, sing the blues at The Big Easy or enjoy a whopper of a Long Island Iced Tea at the legendary Marquis 2.

The Heights

One of Houston’s most historic neighborhoods has quickly evolved into a top nightlife destination. Better Luck Tomorrow’s great drinks are matched by the bar’s outstanding food. Brush up on your bingo skills at SPJST Lodge 88, or enjoy 18-ounce Shiner and Lone Star beers at Alice’s Tall Texan Drive Inn, a true holein-the-wall. The Ready Room is a cool speakeasy bar on White Oak. There’s no sign, but it’s right next door to Ritual.

Uptown/Galleria

This corporate neighborhood knows how to party. Start off with a cocktail at the hopping social hotspot, Bisou, at River Oaks District. Or cross the street and head upstairs at Le Colonial

for the nightly people watching party. Latenight dining and drinks are always on the menu at 51fifteen Cuisine and Cocktails at Saks Fifth Avenue at The Galleria. Or go fullon dive at The West End, a dog-friendly beer joint with a fun happy hour.

Still, a visit to Huntsville wouldn’t be the same without taking time to appreciate the great outdoors. Carve out time to spend the day (or night) at Huntsville State Park. Located six miles southwest of the city, the park is open year-round, allowing visitors camping, kayaking and swimming, as well as hiking and biking opportunities.

Tucked between Houston and Dallas, Huntsville makes an ideal escape for nature, culture and history buffs, nestled among the tall pines of the Sam Houston National Forest. Founded in 1835, Huntsville remains a popular destination for visitors looking to celebrate the past. Start the trip with a visit to the Sam Houston Statue—the most photographed statue in the state. Incidentally, it’s also a great place to pick up maps, tour information and brochures, since it’s home to the city’s visitor center. From there, venture to the Sam Houston Memorial Museum, which honors the legacy of General Sam Houston. Located on 15 acres of Houston’s original homestead, guests can tour several buildings and enjoy a picnic lunch in the
