Lincoln Golf Club is regarded by many as one of the finest courses in the county of Lincolnshire. We pride ourselves in presenting a challenging Championship standard course that can be enjoyed by golfers of any ability all year round.

Located just outside the village of Torksey and only a short distance away from the historic centre of Lincoln, it’s no surprise that the well-respected course has all the character you would expect from a venue in the area. At 6,348 yards, our innovative design of parkland and inland links provides golfers with a unique experience that many return to year-on-year.

The club’s championship standard course has since been the venue for the English Seniors County Championship, Lincolnshire Open Championship, the Lincolnshire Amateur Championship, and the Lincolnshire Junior Championship, as well as many other county and regional fixtures. We are also proud to have hosted the England Golf Reid Trophy in 2022.

HISTORY

Thebeginning of golf in Lincolnshire dates from the early 1890s. This was when the ‘Great Golf Revival’ as it was known, swept south over the Scottish border and resulted in the formation of scores of new clubs in England and in the Colonies. Lincolnshire is a county of contrasts with wold and dale, fen, marsh, moor and seashore all lying within its extensive borders. The 25 or so clubs formed over the last century have found homes in very varied surroundings.

Naturally, the earliest established clubs sought the friendly shelter of parks and commons, but the sand dunes of the coast were soon amalgamated with indifferent ground to become fine courses. The first club to be formed in Lincolnshire was the Belton Park Club at Grantham in 1890. In the same year, Burghley Park at Stamford was established, and a few months later in February 1891, Lincoln Golf Club was founded. Other clubs were also established in the county during the last years of the century, and by the early years of the next,

Lincoln Golf Club had become the most influential in Lincolnshire. The game of golf was already being played in Lincoln before the formal setting up of clubs.

A course on South Park was in use, and there was golf on a primitive course of a few holes off Nettleham Road near to the cathedral area of the city. Several of Lincoln’s leading citizens were not at all satisfied with the existing golfing facilities and they decided to take positive action. They called an inaugural meeting on Thursday 12th February 1891 at the offices

6 | www.lincolngc.co.uk

of Lincoln solicitors, Messrs. Danby. The leading organisers at that meeting included Leslie Melville, N Waldo Sibthorp, Robert Swan, Revd. W Usher and A Shuttleworth. They unanimously agreed to form a Lincoln Golf Club with an entrance fee of one guinea and an annual subscription also of one guinea. Those present were told that, following informal discussions with the Carholme race course committee, it was clear that an area of land adjacent to the race course could be leased for use as a golf course. Alfred Shuttleworth was elected

president and Leslie Melville chairman of meetings with W. B. Danby as temporary secretary. The secretary was asked to write immediately to Mr. William Park Junior of Mussleborough requesting him to lay out the links at West Common in Lincoln.

William Park a professional champion golfer, must have worked extremely quickly as by seventh March 1891, the Lincolnshire Chronicle newspaper reported that a golf club had been formed for the city and neighbourhood and was formally opened on Thursday afternoon last. The links were

on the West Common and consisted of nine holes. Mr. Park reported to the committee that the ground will be second-to-none in England. Some 40 members joined the club. Negotiations were concluded with the Carholme Committee, and a rental of £100 per annum was agreed for the lease of the land adjacent to the grandstand.

So, the few golf enthusiasts in Lincoln achieved a course remarkably speedily and were able to show off their creation to their friends in nearby counties.

HISTORY

Hollinwell and Buxton High Peak courses were already established and Lindrick was at the planning stage. The remainder of 1891 was largely a learning process for all concerned. No one in Lincoln had run a golf course before. Golf course management and development were new skills to be acquired by trial and error, and staff changes were frequent.

A club room was in use in the grandstand and by the end of the first year, the nine holes were becoming established. The first annual general meeting of the club

was held in Bank Street Lincoln on fourth February 1892. 14 members were present and the treasurer was pleased to be able to report a balance in hand of £34. It was agreed that a constitution and club rules should be drawn up but unfortunately no copies of these early documents have been found. The Royal & Ancient rules governed play, but unusual conditions made the introduction of local rules essential. There was much “offensive matter” on the common from the grazing animals and the Carholme Road was a part of the course

with its horse drawn traffic frequently interfering with play. Race meetings and agricultural shows sometimes meant that holes had to be realigned, and the very fact that the public had access to the area often made play most frustrating.

These were merely difficulties to overcome and, indeed, helped to bind the club together and give it corporate strength.

HISTORY

On 27th May 1891 it was agreed “that each Thursday afternoon between the hours of 2 and 7pm be considered the ‘Club Day’ and that members be requested to make a special effort to put in an appearance on the links sometime during the course of the afternoon.” On page 34 of the first minutes book it is recorded “Resolved that the uniform of the club be a red coat with Lincoln Green collar and brass buttons engraved with the Arms of the City and the words LINCOLN GOLF CLUB 1891.” It is interesting to

note that red jackets are still worn by past Presidents of the Lincolnshire Golf Union at their annual dinner at Woodhall. Club facilities were naturally limited during those early days. However, a member Mr. C Brook arranged the rental of a room in the grandstand for 2/6d. per week and six lockers were eventually provided. The club was very much a masculine enterprise during the first three years apart from a Mrs. Bean who looked after the club room in the grandstand. Then, following a committee meeting held on 28th June 1894, a minute reads “that the Ladies Golf

Club be at liberty to engage him (Ayton— on the greens staff) for two mornings each week on payment of 2/6d. per morning.” This suggests that there was a Ladies Golf Club in existence somewhere other than on the Carholme.

Two more references are made to the ladies’ golf club and links regarding the hire of Lincoln Golf Club staff early in 1895. The first step towards a closer liaison with the lady golfers occurs in a letter from Lt. Col. FinchNoyes which was read at a committee meeting on 5th February

10 | www.lincolngc.co.uk

1895. He proposed that “a member should be allowed to invite a lady member of the Ladies Golf Club to play with him on the gentleman’s golf course except on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons, or at other times as the committee should think fit.” The committee decided that they had no power to deal with such a proposition involving such an important alteration to the constitution of the club without first having consulted all the members.

In April that year, Mr. R. Swan as president of the ladies’ club, was asked to consult with

the ladies to see if they had any desire to become members of the club. This resulted in a special general meeting, attended by 13 members, at which it was agreed that “Ladies should be admitted whether from the town, county or ladies’ golf club, at a special subscription rate and subject to certain conditions regarding playing times.” So, the club’s four-year life as a bastion of male only membership came to an end. Members were still dissatisfied with the club’s facilities, there being just the one room available in the grandstand.

In March 1896 the Captain, Revd. W N Usher, reported to committee that negotiations were in hand with Mr. Smith, a grocer, who owned a field at the south east corner of the West Common. This was considered to be the best site for a golf pavilion. After protracted negotiations, two cottages were built for leasing to the club. One of these was adapted so as to provide proper facilities for a clubhouse, and the first formal meeting took place there on 6th February 1897 when the AGM was held.

HISTORY

The erection of the clubhouse and cottage for staff satisfied the immediate needs of the club. However, the accommodation was rented, and the course was on common land, open to all. The enthusiasm and aspirations of the club’s ‘founding fathers’ were such that they would not tolerate these arrangements for long. They were also most concerned regarding the greatly increased number of smallpox cases in the Lincoln area.

A new isolation camp was to be established on the West Common near to the

course, and this news alarmed members considerably.

At a meeting held on 16th February 1899, the question of a private course was discussed. A sub-committee consisting of the captain, W. T. Warrener, W J Cannon, C Pym and the secretary H H Dunn was formed to examine the possibility of acquiring land in the Boultham area of the city, and also to discuss with South Park Golf Club their ideas on finding suitable land near Lincoln for a private course.

COURSE TOUR

Hole 1 | 366 yards | Par 4

Sponsored by: Mundy’s

The first hole at Lincoln Golf Club, commonly known as Torksey, requires a straight opening drive to escape the bunkering down the left and right side of the fairway. A good tee shot will leave a short approach to the two-tiered green which slopes from back-to-front. Walking away with a four is a great start to the round.

Hole 2 | 395 yards | Par 4

Sponsored by: Audi VW

From the tee, a left-to-right shot shape is needed to open up the hogs-back green for the approach and avoid the bunkering down the left side of the hole. Club selection can prove difficult due to the prevailing wind. Leaving the ball below the hole is key to setting up a birdie opportunity.

Hole 3 | 512 yards | Par 5

Sponsored by: Small Beer Ltd

This 510-yard par five, although not the longest, can prove a challenge for any golfer. Diagonally placed bunkers from the tee creates a decision on club selection for the longer hitter. The more strategic player will have to find the fairway to be able to attack the flag with their approach. A good early opportunity in the round.

COURSE TOUR

Hole

4 | 358 yards | Par 4

Sponsored by: Caig & Laura Buckingham

- Racehorse Bloodstock Owners

Although an average length par four, the fourth hole has out-of-bounds all down the left and three well-placed bunkers, one on the left and two on the right to catch wayward tee shots. The green slopes quite noticeable from front-to-back and there are four greenside bunkers awaiting any wayward approach shots.

Hole 5 | 278 yards | Par 4

Sponsored by: APSS

At 284 yards, the fifth presents the perfect risk and reward hole. The longer player can be tempted to drive the green but must be careful of the out-of-bounds on the left. An approach into the green for the more strategic player can prove difficult due to the false front. Four is often a good score.

Hole 6 | 144 yards | Par 3

Sponsored by: Secure Valeting Services

The first of the par threes at Lincoln Golf Club is the 145-yard sixth hole. Club selection is vital in finding the centre of the green with a run-off short and bunkering surrounding the surface. The undulating green means many golfers are happy to leave only having had two putts.

16 | www.lincolngc.co.uk

Hole 7 | 320 yards | Par 4

Sponsored by: T C Harrisons

A straight tee shot is required due to the natural left-to-right terrain of the hole. Golfers are often faced with the ball below their feet on the approach. Missing the fairway, however, will require the golfer to negotiate the narrow entrance with bunkering on both the left and right side of the green.

Hole 8 | 436 yards | Par 4

Sponsored by: SIS Global

A long uphill par four that doglegs to the left, requires the golfer to hit the perfect tee shot to give themselves a good angle into the green. The blind approach as well as the two bunkers short of the green, make it easy to see why this hole is stroke index 1, a tough par four.

Hole 9 | 435 yards | Par 4

Sponsored by: LGC Ladies Section

Arguably one of the best par fours on the course. With trees and bunkering lining both sides of the fairway, a pinpoint drive is required to leave the golfer with an angled approach shot.

COURSE TOUR

Hole 10 | 410 yards | Par 4

Sponsored by: Fytche-Taylor Planning

A testing start to the back nine that sees the course move into an inland links feel. The semi-blind tee shot often hides the bunker to the right of the fairway as well as the small stream to the left of the fairway. The downhill approach can cause clubbing issues for golfers. A four is always a great start to the back nine.

Hole 11 | 399 yards | Par 4

Sponsored by: Wright Vigar

A slightly uphill par four with a naturally undulating fairway and raised green make this one of the most aesthetically pleasing holes on the course. Missing the green can leave a difficult up and down for par with a run off short and strategic bunkering surrounding the surface.

Hole 12 | 144 yards | Par 3

Sponsored by: LGC Seniors Section

At 144 yards, the shortest hole on the course shouldn’t be taken for granted. The narrow entrance and change in elevation can make this a difficult tee shot for the player. Club selection is vital to leave the hole with a par.

www.lincolngc.co.uk | 19
20 | www.lincolngc.co.uk

COURSE TOUR

Hole 13 | 447 yards | Par 4

Sponsored by: Sun Hat Villa’s and Resorts

A superb par four awaits the golfer on the tee. A dog-leg right, the 13th hole is one of the more demanding tee shots on the course. A well-struck drive will often run to the lower section of the hard-running links fairway. Golfers should take care with their approach due to the prevailing right-to-left cross wind and funnelled entrance. A par can feel like a birdie on this hole.

Hole 14 | 322 yards | Par 4

Sponsored by: Wilkin Chapman LLP

The 14th is a hole that every golfer needs the opportunity to play. The player must decide whether to attempt to drive the green or leave an approach from the undulating fairway. Regardless of the choice, avoid being long at all costs as the road awaits any loose shots.

Hole 15 | 513 yards | Par 5

Sponsored by: Sunrise Windows Ltd

With a pond to the right and out of bounds to the left, accuracy is paramount from the tee on this one. A good drive will leave the longer hitting golfer with the opportunity to reach the green in two. A precise pproach is required for any front hole location with the false front waiting for any under-clubbed shots. One of the final birdie opportunities on the back nine.

www.lincolngc.co.uk | 21

COURSE TOUR

Hole 16 | 362 yards | Par 4

Sponsored by: Newton Fallowell

A dog-leg left to right awaits the golfer on the inward stretch. The player needs to favour the left side of the fairway to open up the green for the second shot. Club selection is key with a run-off short of the green and water behind. A ball finishing in the middle of the green is a fantastic shot on this hole.

Hole 17 | 188 yards | Par 3

Sponsored by: Duncan & Toplis

The ‘signature hole’ at Lincoln Golf Club that is often remembered by many a golfer. The slightly elevated green and water short present the golfer with a decision to make from the tee. At 188 yards, a well-struck approach is required to find the putting surface.

Hole 18 | 381 yards | Par 4

Sponsored by: Streets Accountants

The 18th hole requires the golfer to aim towards the left-hand side of the fairway to open the approach to the green. A shot of this shape can often cut the corner and leave a shorter approach. A great chance to set up a final birdie opportunity.
