Histo

ry

n w o T e On eam One T The first match to be played by a team representing Haywards Heath was in March 1888, which provided the impetus for the formation of ‘Haywards Heath Juniors’. After a brief change of name to ‘Excelsior’ in 1894, the club adopted the name ‘Haywards Heath FC’ in 1895.

Without a home ground, the club led a somewhat nomadic existence in its early days, playing most of its games away until 1895 when it was offered the use of the field in South Road which was later to become Victoria Park and the club’s home venue until 1952. Haywards Heath FC lifted its first silverware in 1900 when it won the Sussex Junior Cup and played in the Mid-Sussex League of which it was a founding member. 1901-1906 saw the club finish as runners up in the senior division in four of its first

five seasons, as Division two winners in 1911-12 after relegation in 1908. In 191920 Haywards Heath were Mid-Sussex League champions without losing a game. They won the title again in 192223 and went on to retain it for the next two seasons, losing only one match in each season. In 1926, the club transferred to the Brighton, Hove & District League and, after winning the league title at the very first attempt, joined the Sussex County League the following year. The first five seasons in the County League (1926-

8

Histo

ry

1932) saw the club finish in the top four but they were sadly to finish bottom of the league in the 1932-33 season. In 1941-42, the club were winners of the Sussex Senior Cup and, after the war, were the league’s Eastern Division winners of 1945-46. A single division league was re-introduced the following year which the club won in both 194950 and again in 1950-51. In 1952 the club finally moved from Victoria Park to the newly finished

Hanbury Stadium which enabled it to join the Metropolitan League which included the reserve sides of professional clubs such as West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Arsenal. After a promising first season finishing in fifth place, the club struggled against the professional opposition and, finishing bottom in 1960-61, elected to re-join the Sussex County League. The Division One title was won in 196970 and the League Cup in 1972-73. The club was also runners-up in 1974-75 but were relegated at the end of the 1979-80 season. The Division Two Cup

was won in 1983-84 and, as runnersup in 1985-86, the club again gained promotion back into the senior division. In 1988, our centennial year, the present name of Haywards Heath Town Football Club was adopted to reflect the ‘town’ status of Haywards Heath itself. Two successive relegations in 1992 and 1993 saw the club drop into the third division where they won the Division Three Cup in 2000-01. The following year as Division Three runners-up, HHTFC were promoted back to Division Two but were again relegated after only one season. Heath won the Division Three

9 Cup in 2008-09 and after finishing as runners-up in 2012-13 gained promotion back into Division Two. On the rebranding of the Sussex County League to the Southern Combination Football League in 2015, the second division was renamed Division One and the title was won in that first season, earning Haywards Heath Town FC promotion to the Premier Division. The club finished top of the Premier Division the following season (2016-17) and were due to be promoted to the Isthmian League. Unfortunately, promotion was denied following a nine-point deduction, due to an inadvertent off-field administrative error, which saw the championship awarded elsewhere. The club however, responded in style by winning the

Premier Division again in the 201718 season, this time adding the Peter Bentley League Challenge Cup. Heath enjoyed a successful 2018-19 debut in the Isthmian League, finishing in a very respectable fifth position which qualified them for the playoffs at the first attempt. They were eliminated by Horsham, who went on to win promotion to the Premier Division. The squad also reached the final of the Sussex RUR Cup and the semi-finals of the Sussex County Senior Cup. Our Senior Cup run included a famous away win at Crawley Town.

Following two seasons curtailed by Covid, Haywards Heath Town FC returned with a bang In the 20212022 season. The team reached the quarter finals of the Isthmian League Cup, beating Ashford, Ramsgate and Worthing on the way, before being defeated by eventual winners Horsham. The team achieved its highest finish in it’s history, finishing 4th in the Isthmian South-East division. However, they were to be beaten by Herne Bay on penalties in the semi final of the playoffs, who went on to win promotion to the Premier Division.

We passionately provide grassroots football for our community and have strong links with the senior team. We are a chartered standard club, the coaching team are FA qualified, and our great facilities include a 3g training pitch.

The philosophy that we are embedding at the club is all about helping people to maximise their potential. This is about using the power of sport to develop skills that will help develop better people, as well as better footballers, by creating an environment that allows them to thrive.

Nick Levett is our Director of Football at Haywards Heath Town FC and responsible for organising the football side of things at the club. This role supports the coaches to be the best they can, from U7 through to the First team, and connecting the whole pathway.

We are focused on allowing young people to have autonomy of their learning, feel belonging to the club and their team and develop competence as they improve.

11

Pathway of player and personal progression: Our club is built on the foundations of developing players with a view to long term progression into the senior team at Haywards Heath Town FC. We are also about developing skills and behaviours for life beyond football. That’s really important to us. Focus on development alongside being competitive: The long-term aim is to develop better players and better people, using football as the vehicle to create memories that will last a lifetime. We will not waiver from that commitment for the sake of winning

a football match and believe in our principles. However, we also believe that football is a competitive game played between two teams and striving to win will always be part of how we approach sport. We care about enjoyment and learning: It is essential that we create an environment for all people within the club that they enjoy and in which they also learn. For players, this doesn’t mean that everything is rosy; we know that learning can be hard, people make mistakes and games can be won and lost.

Priority through younger age groups is individual development before the team: Football is a team game played by individuals and our long-term focus is about developing better players for our senior team. We will develop players that understand different roles across the team and have a robust, technical base to skilfully apply to the different demands placed on them within the game. All players will learn to play in different positions!

The player is the syllabus: We will have a programme to help everyone (our player curriculum) and how that is applied will recognise that different players will need different parts at different times. The skill of our coaches will be to develop this through a programme of coaching that focuses on their individual needs. There will be a focus on the development of their psychological skills to ensure we develop ‘thinking’ players that have a solid and broad skill set also.

How did you get involved with the youth setup? My eldest son joined Haywards Heath Town Youth FC in 2018. The club at this time consisted of three teams. The following year my younger son wanted to move clubs so we decided to get involved and create a team for his age group along with one other age group.

What does the future hold for the youth setup? For season 22/23 we will have 12 youth teams from U8 through to U18, along with us looking to setting up some girls only opportunities. Most of our coaches are parents, but, as we grow we are attracting independent coaches - all of whom volunteer.

What we have achieved as a club in such a short period of time makes me proud, we are getting stronger links with the community, and providing and producing an excellent level of football. What do you enjoy the most about being involved with the youth setup? We have a close relationship with the senior team and encourage our players and families to support the team on match days, as they support us with players and management coming along to some of the youth matches and awards. The senior club goal keeper coach does sessions each week with our U11’s and above.

We all work together and support local events together as a whole club, all through volunteers, parents and youth players. You will often see us at events such as Spring Festival & Town Day just to name a couple.

there as much as possible to increase our matchday attendances. How did you get involved with Haywards Heath Town FC? Myself, my wife Marion and our dog Mira moved to Haywards Heath in June 2021, and having followed football all my life I was keen to find a local team to support. I came along to Hanbury Park in August for the visit of Burgess Hill and was immediately hooked. The club is really well run, there’s a great spirit amongst the supporters and with such a thriving youth system, the club also gives back to the local community. I’ve worked in sales myself running events for 15+ years, and so when I saw the club were looking for a commercial manager, I thought that was a way I could help! What do you enjoy most about volunteering at Haywards Heath Town FC? teers n Giving back to the local community. u l o Our V I’ve met some fantastic people through helping out at the football club, and it gives me a lot of local pride seeing so many of the youth team wearing the Blue and White of Haywards Heath on matchdays. The teams also love kick abouts with the players post game, and often wait in the bar to get their autographs too. It’s really great and Can you tell us a bit about something you don’t tend to get higher your role at the club? As the Commercial Director of the up the football pyramid. club, I’m looking to raise the profile of “The Blues” throughout the town and We have a number of charity partners surrounding areas. This will mainly be we work with too, and we’ve really through partnerships with community enjoyed supporting local events with groups, sponsorships with local penalty shootout competitions such as businesses and getting our name out the Town Day and Spring Festival.

Paul Stone Director Commercial

e n o t S l Pau cial Commeerctor Dir

What has been your favourite moment supporting “The Blues” so far? Non-League day in March 2022. We went all out with promotion for the game and managed to get over 100 new faces through the gate. The biggest challenge so far has been making the town aware of who we are and where we play. We hope that this brochure helps open some people’s eyes that we’re not a County football team anymore! What’s next for Haywards Heath Town FC? We already attract attendances big enough to compete in the division above (Isthmian Premier). We have a huge catchment area here with a growing population and so our goal

is to continue increasing attendances and our profile, whilst also bringing on board more youth teams and hopefully a ladies team over time. We also know that there are improvements and upgrades we can make at Hanbury Park to improve the matchday experience. I’m always looking to speak with local businesses looking to grow their profile, so please do get in touch if you would like to grow your business and support your local team!

Tell us a bit about your role at Haywards Heath Town FC My role in the club was originally helping out before match day with restocking the bar, getting the food hut ready for the game the next day. I now help wherever I’m needed on matchdays, which is mainly with the raffle, but could be anything! And how do your family help? My family have full on roles during match days which they enjoy and relish in. My husband volunteers as a steward, my daughter helps out selling matchday tickets, and we all clear up rubbish left after home games.

What has been your favourite moment supporting Haywards Heath Town FC? My favourite moment so far of supporting the blues was seeing us getting into the playoffs. We came back from 3-1 down in stoppage time to draw 3-3 with Herne Bay! What do you like to do in your spare time? Apart from enjoying watching the blues I also like to watch my children play. I’m also a keen runner and really into my fitness, recently completing a 50km ultra marathon for Forward Facing UK. I’m also a huge advocate for women’s football, and regularly attend games when not at the Heath!

For as long as I can remember I have always loved going to football (Fulham being my team), back in the 90’s, my father used to take me and my brother to see a family friend who played and managed many non-league clubs. It

was here that I found a massive love for lower league football. They weren’t untouchable, they were normal lads in the day but football players on the weekend. As a young lad I was so impressed by this. Do you think many Premier League players could do a week’s ‘normal’ work then play on a Saturday? I moved to Haywards Heath from Pimlico (Westminster) before the pandemic. I said to my good lady, I’m sure there is a non-league club around here, lo and behold Hanbury Park was a 15 minute

walk from us. The first weekend I could I was down there, it was a pre-season game Vs Lewes and my lord what an end to end game it was (it was like watching tennis) the game ended 4-2 to us. I was gripped, and walked out the ground thinking I can’t wait to come back. Roll on two years, I go to home and away games. Nothing makes me more happy then following the Bluebells, the players are exactly like they were in the 90’s normal lads with talent, all very approachable and they join us in the bar after the game.

We have started to build a fan base, with your help we can continue to build, and being part of your local team, be proud of your local area. I’m super proud following Haywards Heath town, they are local and need the local community more than ever. If you are reading this, thinking about coming down, you will be very much welcome (you can find us fans next to our huge flag) I suggest coming down and be part of this amazing club, you won’t regret it.

The work Steve (Chairman), Jane (Youth) and other volunteers do is truly unbelievable, they give their all to this club and the community, week in week out. I also founded a men’s mental health charity “Walk And Talk MMH” some eight years ago, using football as the tool to open up the conversation regarding men’s mental health. Did you know suicide is the biggest killer of men under 45? We are trying to help as many men as possible. We have covered over 15,000 miles walking in 8 years, saved lives, helped one another during the pandemic and we have become a family.

Hanbury Stadium is a 20 minute walk from Haywards Heath Station (1.3 miles) and there are adequate parking spaces in the surrounding roads for supporters traveling by car, though we ask for you to please be considerate of our neighbours when parking.
