WELCOME Thank you for taking the time to read our 150th-anniversary brochure. Founded in 1872, we are proud to be celebrating this monumental landmark this year and will be commemorating this achievement in style with events across the club throughout the summer. We have had highs and lows, but one thing is for certain, we have never been in a better position in all areas across the club than we are now. For many years, cricket was perceived as not only a male-dominated sport but also a game for those of a more privileged background and upbringing. Luckily, the world has changed for the better and we consider ourselves fortunate to be a club that welcomes diversity in our ranks. We are blessed with players of all genders, ages, ethnic backgrounds and abilities, all wearing our badge of myrtle green and loving playing cricket for BHCC. In fact, we now have over 300 players actively playing sport in the centre of our town, which includes over 100 women and girls. Incredible!

Cricket is thriving at Burgess Hill Cricket Club, and we are rightly proud of what we have achieved.

Cricket is thriving at Burgess Hill Cricket Club, and we are rightly proud of what we have achieved. We have two simple aims every season; firstly, to ensure everyone enjoys their cricket and secondly, as a club, we strive to get better every year. So, we won’t stop here, we have big plans to continue to improve our club and keep providing a safe, welcoming, fun and inclusive place to play sport as well as cementing our place at the heart of our local community. To all our sponsors who keep us moving forward, thank you. You keep making us better. To all those who have played for or supported us, either now or in the past, thank you for being an integral part of our journey. Finally, to all those no longer with us, thank you to every single one of you for everything you did at the time in our history that you were affiliated with Burgess Hill Cricket Club. It is much appreciated by all. We’d also like to say a huge thank you to Ludis for their help on this publication and to all those who have advertised in it.

HISTORY Formed in 1872, Burgess Hill Cricket Club played their first recorded match at St Johns Park. While information on the club’s early years remains scarce, we know that by 1881 they were playing their games at Mr Broad’s meadow, opposite the station. Interest in local sport was on the rise and at the suggestion of club members, along with members of the St John’s Institute during a meeting at the end of the summer of 1882, Burgess Hill Football Club was formed and for many years players from the cricket club would also represent the town on the local football fields. By 1883, the club had returned to St Johns and although light on playing numbers, the name of BHCC became synonymous with the local park. In 1892, former Australian Test Captain, W.L. Murdoch, now a resident of the town, made a solitary appearance for the club in a game at St John’s College. Two years later, the club would hold its first-ever ‘cricket week’ at the behest of captain, George Hammond, an event

that would be enjoyed by players and spectators for years to come. That same year would also see the first women’s cricket club fixture take place in the park between a Miss Giraud’s XI and Miss Good’s XI. The 1902 season would see two batsmen register the only doublehundreds for the club. J.W. Callow scored 208 v the Goldsmith’s Institute

the step up to the Sussex County side. Vallance Jupp would also go on to play for Northants and make eight Test appearances for England. Reginald Hollingdale would also represent Sussex having played for BHCC during his younger days before leaving the county to take up a coaching post in Scotland. Kent fast bowler, Pat Morfee also played for Burgess Hill, taking no fewer than six 5-wicket hauls (including

In 1950, Sid Ball, became the first Burgess Hill cricketer to complete 1,000 runs in a season. in July, while a month later, A.J. Crowder totalled an impressive 221* in a score of 315/5 against the 23rd Brigade Royal Field Artillery XI. The 1909 season saw, for the first time, a Burgess Hill cricketer make

7 for 2) during his one-and-a-half seasons with the club. Not forgetting, of course, when talking of international and county cricketers, that Caroline Atkins also represented Sussex and then England in Test, One-Day and T20 Cricket.

A particular low point for the club was the loss of many club records, including old scorebooks in a pavilion fire during the spring of 1992, which led to the building being demolished. Fortunately, we are now looking forward to a bright future with plans for a new pavilion detailed within these pages. In 1912, the club amalgamated with the Burgess Hill Working Men’s club following a decline in playing numbers. Nine years later, the club would play its first ‘competitive’ fixtures in the new Mid-Sussex cricket league alongside six other local clubs. In their first league fixture, the 2nd XI triumphed over local rivals St Andrews by 34 runs, bowling the Leylands Road club out for 29 with T. Godsmark and J. Leaney both taking 5 for 14. In the 1929 season, C Bartlett performed the rare feat of taking all 10 wickets in an opposition innings against Balcombe in May - nine of his victims were bowled as he finished with figures of 10 for 19. The feat was repeated by H Gaston eight years later who claimed

10 for 11, which was reported at the AGM in 1938. By the start of the war in 1939, the council had finally acquiesced to the club request for a pavilion in the park, a process that had been ongoing since before the turn of the century! At the end of the 1950 season, Sid Ball, having played for the club since 1919, became the first Burgess Hill cricketer to complete 1,000 runs in a season, winning the club batting trophy for the eighth time. Two seasons later, the club took on the preparation and maintenance of the square in St Johns Park, which has been kept in excellent condition since.

Over the years many well-known names from the town have played for and captained the club and our teams have enjoyed varying degrees of success. The 1st XI gained promotion in 1991 and 1999, followed by elevation to Division 2 of the Sussex Cricket League in 2018, where we are currently playing at the highest level that we’ve ever achieved. 2021 saw promotion and league title wins for our 2nd and 3rd XI under the captaincy of Phil Marshall and Charlie Punter respectively. With an incredible 150 years of history behind us, we look forward to finding out what lies in store for Burgess Hill CC in the future.

Women and Girls Cricket In 2015, our newly-formed U11 Girls team played competitive cricket for the first time. After winning their inaugural game, a mixed season followed. By the following season, we had progressed enough to enter teams into both the U11 and U13 leagues with much success. The U11s shared the league title and the U13s went one better, winning their league and playing in the county final for the first time. In 2017, we were able to put teams out across all age groups, including a Women’s team for the first time. The U13s were again successful, putting in many impressive performances on their way to the title. With success at youth level giving the younger players experience and the confidence to develop their game, it was in 2019 that we enjoyed arguably our most successful season with our Women’s and Girl’s teams. Our U13s secured the league title for their age group once again, while the U16s finished as runners up. However, it was

12 | www.burgesshillcc.co.uk

our Women’s team that led the way, winning the 35 Over League in their first season in the competition, twice defeating reigning champions, Henfield. Following a disrupted 2020, our U15s finished the 2021 campaign as runners up in their league, losing out on net run rate in the final standings. However, individual honours were well earned as both Cerys Pegley and

Molly Hepburn topped the divisional run-scoring and wicket-taking leaderboards. The U15s also won their festival tournament overcoming Lewes

Priory in the final. The girls ended the season representing the county in the regional finals. The Women’s team enjoyed a mixed summer, with Katie Read registering her maiden hundred against local rivals, St Andrews and Issy Cooper claiming her first five-wicket haul in a win over St James. Of course, we are no strangers to successful Women’s players at the

club. In June 2001, former BHCC star, Caroline Atkins, made her Test match debut for England against Australia and went on to play nine Tests, 58

One-Day Internationals and 19 T20 Internationals, winning both the Women’s World Cup and the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2009. We are incredibly proud of our players in our Women and Girls section and are always thrilled to see our female cricketers represent the club in all formats of the game. Currently, we have around 15 girls who have played Adult League cricket for our Saturday teams and we are always keen to offer our players the opportunities to partake in all forms of the game. Players such as Women’s captain, Charley Hepburn, Emily Goss, Izzy Deamer and Ellie Clark bring a wealth of experience to the teams while many of our younger players have represented the county in age group cricket. It promises to be another exciting summer at BHCC. We offer cricket for girls from the age of 5 upwards all the way to adults. For more information about playing or supporting Women and Girls cricket at BHCC please get in touch: burgesshillcc@gmail.com

We are incredibly proud of our players in our Women and Girls section.

BHCC Youth Academy Burgess Hill Cricket Club is a Focus Club and is registered under the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) Clubmark Accreditation Scheme. This means we have demonstrated that we are fully equipped to look after and develop youngsters and promote cricket to children throughout our community. We are very proud of our youth academy with large numbers of colts making their way into the adult league teams over the last 50 years. Girls cricket has been covered in the Women and Girls section in this brochure and in addition to this, we also run boys cricket teams from under 8, all the way up to U18. We have had numerous youth players representing the county via the Sussex pathway and we continue to work hard to improve the coaching that we offer. Every year we add more and more qualified coaches to further enhance our academy. We also offer cricket for boys and girls, from age 5 to around 7 years old, via the All Stars Cricket initiative. Training for

this is Friday night from May to August at 4.30pm in St John’s Park.

League Cricket League cricket provides competitive cricket at all levels for our playing members, and BHCC are proud to field four Saturday league sides in the 1st Central Sussex Cricket League. The current SCL was formed in 2019 with the integration of the East Sussex Cricket League, the Mid Sussex Cricket League, the West Sussex Invitation Cricket League and the Sussex Premier Cricket League. With this integration, the SCL is now the largest cricket league in the world. In 2018 our 1st XI won SPCL Division 3 and in 2022 continue to play in Division 2, which is the highest level we have ever played. New captain Kevin Ramsay takes over, after the sterling efforts of Joe Maskell for the last few years. Our 2nd XI now also start 2022 at their highest level in their history, Division 5C, having won Division 6C in 2021 under the captaincy of Phil Marshall. The 3rd XI also had an excellent 2021, winning Division 10C led by Charlie Punter. Our

4th XI will start 2022 in Division 12C under new captain Joe Hartley. All four teams very much look forward to the 2022 league season as we remain ambitious to keep playing the best standard we can across the club. Youth Pathway While we regularly enjoy sharing tales of days gone by and reminiscing over games that we’ve played in, we also pride ourselves at Burgess Hill on the progress that our younger players make as they progress through the adult teams. A large percentage of our league players have come through the BHCC youth academy. The 1st XI is currently well represented with Lewis Mamoany and Jack Smart having made the step up to the top level in recent seasons, while Toby Munt was an integral part of the championship-winning 2nd XI last year, ably supported by the likes of Owen Larder and Tristan Hepburn, who both played important roles in the 2nd and 3rd teams over the course of the summer. Freddie Fortune, Billy Fuller, Conor Ward and Ryan Goss have all regularly put in positive performances in competitive adult cricket and will be keen to work their way through the sides as they develop their skills and gain more experience. In the younger age groups, players such as George Cranfield, James Plimmer, Hayden Wickwar and Charlie

Ward are all regular standout performers. And there are more coming through! The women’s squad is also packed with talented young players, led by Charley Hepburn, with Izzy Deamer, Adeline Preston, Ellie Clark, Cerys Pegley, Alice Noakes, Millie Gwynn, Paige Gwynn, Izzy Handley and Grace Phillips all bringing county age group experience to the team. The likes of Katie and Amy

Read, along with Mia Pordage, have come through our ranks to establish themselves as valuable players in all formats of the game. With the support of our dedicated team of coaches and the desire and drive to continue to improve as a club, we look forward to sharing the individual sporting journeys of all of our young players as they seek to follow in the footsteps of those who have gone before them at St John’s Park.

Ladies Softball Cricket The BHCC Ladies softball team was launched in April 2021. The initiative was to encourage women from the local community to come and play cricket in a fun environment where all were welcome irrespective of ability. The development of the squad started with a social media post to see if there were any local ladies, with some or no experience wanting to give the sport a go. The response was simply overwhelming. Over 30 ladies attended the first training session. From that moment, softball cricket at BHCC went from strength to strength. We had 1st and 2nd XI players coming along to help coach the ladies and the standard of the players rocketed up as the ladies showed incredible determination and dedication. In just a few short months some players had gone from never picking up a bat before to playing in matches and festivals with the number of members playing softball increasing to over 45, an incredible achievement. The squad looked to challenge themselves further and play league matches against

other teams within Sussex. As skills continued to improve, we deservedly made it to Finals Day at Brighton Aldridge Cricket Academy in September 2021. Showing the expertise and passion they had nurtured throughout the season in training, we secured an outstanding win in the semi-final before triumphing again in the final, the first-ever Softball Ladies League Champions!

The Sussex Cricket Foundation organised ladies only softball festivals which were held around the county. Members of the squad attended these festivals as it was a fabulous opportunity to meet new people, gain experience and play cricket in a secure, non-judgemental environment. Thank you to Sussex for starting these up.

Ladies Softball Cricket We also hosted our very own softball festival in July 2021. This event was open to the ladies who had been attending club training sessions but also anyone else in the local area who was interested in coming along and trying their hand at cricket. We saw a huge response with over 60 ladies across eight teams who participated throughout the afternoon in a fun and relaxed tournament. Our wonderful sponsors at Ridgeview helped get the day underway with a glass of sparkling wine for all adults, which was certainly enjoyed and appreciated by our participants! It was a magnificent sight, to see St Johns Park in the heart of our community, packed with female cricketers of all ages, many of whom had not played before last year. We are delighted times have changed dramatically over the past 15 years with regard to women’s participation in sport. BHCC are passionate about leading the way with women’s cricket and we will continue to grow, and evolve this section

of our club. If you would like to come along to a training session in a supportive and relaxed environment, please get in touch. No experience necessary, just an ability to have fun and make friends at the same time. We want to see more women playing cricket this year at BHCC than ever before! A quote to finish on which sums up one member’s experience of softball cricket at BHCC...

I was anxious about coming along to a training session, but I can honestly say that playing ladies softball cricket is the best thing I have ever done. I’ve gained a new skill, had a blast, and made lifelong friends along the way If this sounds like something you would like to do, please get in touch with Jo George or Sarah Plimmer via the club email: burgesshillcc@gmail.com

St John’s Park If you have seen St John’s Park in recent months you will have seen a massive improvement in the area of the park where we play cricket. Over £40,000 of club money has been spent improving this area of the park for all that use it. We hope you agree it looks great! In 2020 the club installed an irrigation system which included six pop-up sprinklers enabling us to water the cricket square and much of the outfield on demand, unprecedented on a park cricket pitch. Then in September 2021 stage two of the renovation commenced as we firstly introduced 20 tons of ongar loam to improve the playing surface on the main square. The square was then laser levelled, rolled, seeded and finally fertilised. Finally a huge renovation of 8,500 square metres of the outfield was completed as it was also levelled to take out as many of the undulations as possible and then rolled, seeded and fertilised.

Through the countless donations and amazing support of our members, plus very much appreciated contributions from MSDC and BHTC we’ve been able to do so much to improve our home. Thousands spend time in St John’s Park either playing sport, watching or having fun with their families so for a club like us to be able to make a difference really makes us proud.

We thank our brilliant ground team, led by Head Groundsman Ian Plummer and Phil Wickwar, for their incredible work each year. They make our ground what it is. Thanks guys. To contribute towards the work we do or to help us keep improving St John’s Park please get in touch with the club: burgesshillcc@gmail.com

St John’s Park Pavilion Plans As a club we work hard every year to get better and as you have seen much work has been done on our ground to improve the square and playing surface. The biggest project we are undertaking in the next few years will be our plans to improve and extend the St John’s Park pavilion. This is a Mid Sussex District Council building which is in urgent need of enlargement, modernisation and importantly given the size of our women and girls section, requires dedicated changing rooms for women and girls to use. We first started talking about upgrading the pavilion about a decade ago. In the last couple of years, we have seen work done to improve the changing rooms at the pavilion. These have made a huge difference. The ones previously were cramped and didn’t have hot water or umpire’s facilities. The upgrade has been brilliant and we thank MSDC for their investment. We put extra money in as a club to help make them top drawer

with new pods and signage to ensure these were the best they could be. This upgrade has always been stage one of the project to upgrade the main pavilion. The design of the pavilion was never really suitable for a cricket club’s requirement and given our growth in size, it definitely isn’t now. The social area is too small, and a strange layout that prevents significant use by hirers.

So, at the club’s expense we have had plans drawn up to completely redesign the building and make it fit for purpose by a local architect, Andy Swaisland at Hills Architectural Design Ltd. Thank you Andy. The plans reconfigure the building to not only be an excellent cricket pavilion but more importantly a fantastic community building which will ultimately become self-funding.

The biggest project we are undertaking in the next few years will be our plans to improve and extend the St John’s Park pavilion. The kitchen is also too small and therefore cannot support functions, and there is not enough storage space. Most importantly the disabled access is poor for a building of this size. There are plenty of other reasons we want to do something about it, but we’ll run out of room on the page!

There is a vastly improved ground level social area including an upgraded bar, increased floor space, a larger and improved kitchen facility, extra storage facilities for both BHCC and other tenants and modern toilet facilities including much improved disabled

provision. A new upstairs area has been created in our plans to provide a social space for BHCC and other community groups enabling them to freely co-exist. By utilising this central and enviable location the pavilion will generate income to offset and cover running costs. Two areas also ensures that the building can achieve maximum occupancy throughout the year. Upstairs will also incorporate a women and girls changing room providing a safe

and inclusive area for our women and girls to change and participate in cricket at St John’s. These changing facilities are essential for the club to continue to develop its offering to women and girls in the area. We hope these plans will become reality in the next couple of years and we can deliver something really positive for our town. This upgrade can only become reality in partnership with MSDC and we are in dialogue about them hopefully

150th Anniversary Game v MCC

Sunday 3rd July Burgess Hill CC are very proud to host MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club) this year on the 3rd July as part of the club’s 150th Anniversary celebrations. MCC is the most prestigious cricket club in the world whose home is Lords Cricket Ground – the Home of Cricket. MCC was founded in 1787 and laid down a Code of Laws for cricket. It’s laws were adopted throughout the game and MCC remains the custodian of Laws relating to cricket around the world. MCC fields cricket teams from it’s playing members and candidates throughout the summer against opposition ranging from the Champion County to schools and clubs. It is a great privilege to host a fixture against the MCC. In true Burgess Hill CC style, things are being done a little differently

and we are very proud to host both a womens and a mens T20 fixture on the same day against MCC – unique this summer and perhaps the first combined fixture of its kind that MCC have been involved in – a traditional fixture in a contemporary style!

cricket. MCC will boast some first class cricketers and a T20 Blast winner.

The MCC teams will be drawn from members and candidates all of whom have played at least top level club

It should be a superb festival of cricket and a great advert for Burgess Hill Cricket Club and the town. We hope you can join us, it’s free to watch.

BHCC Schools Cricket Several years ago as part of the ‘Chance to Shine’ Community Cricket initiative Burgess Hill Cricket Club in association with Sussex CCC approached a number of local primary schools and offered to run breakfast or after school cricket clubs for children in years 2, 3 and 4, through January and February. The clubs were open to around 20 youngsters, both girls and boys. The clubs took place weekly lasting for up to 45 minutes and ran for 4 or more weeks depending upon availability of the school hall. The sessions were coordinated with the sports teaching lead in each of the schools involved, who compiled the list of attendees. The sessions run by the club’s ECB qualified coaches were structured to be fun and engaging whilst at the same time introducing newcomers to some of the basics of cricket. The timings of these club were designed, so that once the weekly practices finished, the youngsters could be invited to attend BHCC’s junior indoor winter training. Following this they then progress to outdoor cricket in St

John’s Park in the Spring and Summer. The schools who participated were Birchwood Grove, St Wilfrids RC, London Meed, and Manor Field. Plans were being formulated to also undertake some classes at Southway when Covid intervened. Unfortunately due to the pandemic the plans for last year and this have had to be placed on ice although it is hoped that all of the clubs can be resumed in 2023.

Following the success of the primary school clubs initiative the cricket club has since run coaching sessions at Burgess Hill Academy and Burgess Hill Girls senior schools and also for Burgess Hill Youth. We are looking to do more of these sessions in 2023 so if your school would be interested in us running sessions then please get in touch: burgesshillcc@gmail.com

Sussex Slam In 2020, Sussex Cricket introduced a new concept to clubs across the county in a bid to give dads, ex-cricketers or armchair hopefuls that never got around to playing the chance to play some friendly and relaxed cricket on a handful of evenings each year. It’s a brilliant concept that we’ve embraced fully at Burgess Hill. It’s not about the winning for us (luckily), it’s a chance to play in the sun (occasionally!) and enjoy a beer with friends and families afterwards. This year, Rob Gaunt (pictured centre with the pink ball in hand) will take over the captaincy reins and will be looking forward to playing against similarly minded opposition teams around Sussex. So if you’re keen to play for the first time, looking to pick up where you left off a few years ago or tempted to try to understand why cricket is the greatest sport in the world, drop us a line: burgesshillcc@gmail.com

BHCC Socials At BHCC we enjoy ourselves on the field playing the great game. However off the field we certainly know how to enjoy ourselves too with a huge social calendar that we fill through the year and especially through the summer. We hold a number of social events through the season such as race nights, quizzes, and themed parties. On the August bank holiday our President’s Day is a festival of cricket with members young and old from across the club playing cricket against each other. It really is one of our favourite days of the season. Another highlight is the annual match vs Burgess Hill Rugby Club as the men and women of BHCC take on our friends in black. They are another brilliant local sports club and you can find more information on them online at www.bhrfc.co.uk or by emailing them on secretary@bhrfc.co.uk Our fully licensed bar is well stocked and provides an income for the club

that helps us pay our bills and it’s always very competitively priced. As we move forward with our pavilion plans we’ll hopefully see a huge improvement in the bar facilities in St John’s Park for all to use. Please join us for a drink or two this summer!
