The early years of the century saw the birth of the Old Boys (now Barrow Town). This team also played down “Mill Lane” and comprised mainly of boys from the village grammar school, their record though did not compare with the Stars. immediately prior to the First World War another barrow team, the trinity were gaining prominence. also members of the loughborough and district league division one, they rivalled the stars as the top team from the village. Other members of the league at that time were Quorn Havelock, Quorn Emanuel, and no less than four teams from Sileby (Imps, Excelsior, Amateurs and Vics). A referee’s match fee in 1913 was 2/6d (12 ½p) and football boots 6/- per pair (30p).

the population of the village at that time would have numbered around 1000, compared with around 7000 today. The team, known as the Barrow Rising Stars were based at The Railway Inn (now the Soar Bridge), and played their football near the MembersMill.of the Loughborough and District League, they were obviously formidable opposition as their record shows they were winners of Division 1 in 1901/2 and 1902/3 and also Division 2 champions in 1911/12. Cup success included the Bass Charity Cup, Rolleston Cup, and the County Cup. In one particular season four trophies came their way. football in Barrow-upon-Soar has its origins in the late 19th century.

In 1968/69 The Old Boys finished runners-up in Division 2 and were promoted to what was then

The Trinity’s glories could not last and 1930 saw the emergence of ‘The Gunners’ and ‘Barrow Athletic’, The Old Boys reappearing in 1932. The Old Boys were members of the Leics. Mutual League and for a while were based at Cotes Road, before moving to North Street and joining the Loughborough Alliance.

The success of 68/69 was emulated by the team of 92/93 managed by two more local favourites Arthur Chadburn and Colin Sykes. This team gained promotion to the Premier Division as champions. The 1994/95 season was a landmark in Barrow’s history with a number of records being broken. Highest ever placings for the 1st and 2nd teams. Ian Hunter’s haul of 61 league and cup goals. 119 goals scored, with an 18-game unbeaten run-in, culminating in being pipped to the Premiership title by one point. The team again consisted of the nucleus of the promotion winning side, under the same successful management team.

Division 1. Managed by much respected local man Billy Williamson, they were also winners of The Loughborough Charity Cup and The Sileby Cup, (later renamed The Billy Williamson trophy in his honour). Soon after Barrow moved to their current headquarters at Riverside Park under the new title of Barrow Town.

after the second world war, the old boys reformed in 1947 to be continued Trinity FC had an illustrious spell from 1918 onwards and during an 18-year period picked up a league championship, the league cup, and the Rolleston Cup.

After the Second World War, The Old Boys reformed in 1947 and following a public meeting at The Working Men’s Club, entered the Leicestershire Senior League with immediate impact. They reached the semi-fi nal of The Senior Cup but were beaten by Whitwick Colliery. The competition also included Leicester City Reserves.

The club grew in stature and remained in the Premier Division until 2008, finishing as runners-up in 1994–95, 2002–03, 2005–06 and 2007–08 and winning the League Cup in 2002–03 and the Loughborough Charity Cup again in 1996–97, 1998–99, 2000–01 and 2006–07. In 2008 they became founder members of the East Midlands Counties League, where they remained until the disbandment of the league at the end of the 2020/21 season. In 2011 -12 they reached the third qualifying round of the FA Cup and in 2012–13 they finished as league runners-up.

The village of Barrow has had a thriving junior football set up for over 25 years. At the end of the 2017/18 season the Barrow Town and Barrow Juniors committees merged in order to form one club. 2019/20 season saw the ‘Riversiders’ under new management for the first time in five years. Former manager Liam East moved on to United Counties League side St Andrews, taking his management and a large entourage of first team and reserve team players - leaving new manager Kris Nurse to rebuild from scratch. After one year at the helm Kris and his team moved on. The loss of the management team combined with the Covid crisis left the club with significant challenges both on and off the field of play. Wade Ball and Jordan Holmes were appointed first team player/managers. Wade and Jordan steadied the ship and we looked forward to the 2021/22 season with renewed confidence and optimism. Season 2021/22 also saw Barrow Town joining the United Counties First Division following the disbandment of the East Midlands Counties League. continued the village of barrow has had a thriving junior football set uP for over 25 years.

the 2021/22 season saw Jordan Holmes and Wade ball step into the barrow town managerial hot seat as player/managers. they joined the club following two disjointed seasons due to the covid pandemic and the previous management team having had to stand down due to work commitments. as Jordan states “it’s the first time we have stepped over from players to now managing the team, so it’s been very much a learn on the job situation for the both of us”.

13 1st team our 1st team currently Play in the united counties league division one.

“In our first season I think we have mixed feelings about it. Our view is that with the players we have we would have liked to have got in the play off’s, that was our aim at the start of the season. But when you look at it realistically for any team being put together and players having not played together with managers that are still learning the trade you could argue that finishing 8th is an excellent achievement.”

team1st

Jordan and Wade had to set about recruiting an entirely new squad for the season, a tough challenge but one that they thoroughly enjoyed. The club committee are extremely pleased with the enthusiasm and commitment shown by Jordan, Wade and their backroom staff. The team finished the season in 8th place in the league (out of 23 teams); an excellent achievement considering the on-field situation that Jordan and Wade inherited. Ever competitive Jordan is looking for more.

“i think we have a great bunch of lads and the atmosphere this season has been really good, we are hoping we can keep the majority and add a few more for next season to make us stronger. We feel that we are three or four signings away from a promotion push.” Jordan goes on to say. “Wade and myself both love the club and although we are a small club we really want to try and achieve something here. We are always trying to get more fans to come and support the team and we would love for there to be some good young talent coming through the youth teams and Ourreserves.backroom staff have been great all season with Kamani, Millsy and Steve our coaches. Brining in Mick Holmes as assistant manager has certainly helped me and Wade.” “mick played professionally for Wolves, hopefully the lads can learn from him and take on board his experience. We have also brought in davide, our media man who has helped the club with the marketing and social media accounts, he has been a great help to us. We hope to finish this season strong and we are looking forward to what next season brings. up the barrow”

17 reserves a credible achievement for their 1st season.

this season saw what would have been barrow town’s under 17/18-year-olds forming the core of the reserve team. The stated aim of the club is to try and ensure that there is a pathway for our junior players into adult football. Ideally with Barrow’s best local talent going on to play for the adult first team. A reserve team with a solid group of former junior players is an essential part of this long-term plan. The younger players have been joined by some ‘older heads’ to provide the right blend of youth and experience. The plan is starting to show dividends with a couple of the reserve team players occasionally turning out for the first team.

The reserves currently play in the Everards Brewery Leicestershire Senior League Division One (two levels below the first team). This season has been a ‘learning experience’ as former junior players have come to terms with playing adult foot-ball. the team have equipped themselves well winning 11 out 28 games. barrow reserves finished 11th out of 16 teams. a credible achievement for their first season.

The 2013/14 season the road and car park was resurfaced with an overspill car park added just before the main entrance to the ground. A new perimeter fence around the pitch was also constructed to meet perimeter fencing standards for the continued participation in the FA Cup and to meet the requirements for football to be played higher up the national pyramid.

The 2008-09 season saw one of the old covered paddock areas replaced with a 50-seater stand and covered terraced area (with disabled access). This demonstrates the forward thinking of the committee, as we look to progress up the footballing pyramid.

in the early spring/summer of 2021 the sound of creaking joints, pulled muscles and heavy breathing could be heard from riverside park as barrow town’s newly formed walking football team held their first training session. Led by former BTFC committee member Steve Chamberlain, a group of over 50-year-olds dusted off their football boots and took to the playing field. For some, it was the first competitive football that they had played for over a decade. Training was great fun. 20 players were eventually registered, and a number of new friendships were formed. The team went on to compete in a walking football league, with matches hosted at Basford FC. The league boasted a couple of Nottingham Forest veterans teams fielding a number of ex-professional players. barrow finished ninth out of 11 in the league, boasting three competitive victories.

Barrow Town FC is one of the few clubs in the county to be a single club. This came about with the merging of Barrow Town Juniors FC and Barrow Town FC. Although the two clubs have worked together over many years; it was only in June 2018 that both clubs became one. It was recognised in early 2018 that it was impossible for the football clubs to survive financially and volunteer wise without a road map for the future. In joining together, the future is now secure.

The junior section has come a long way since the 1990s when the village boasted two Junior clubs, Barrow Juniors playing at the Riverside ground and Barrow Rangers playing at Humphrey Perkins School. In the early 2000s it was concluded that for a village the size of Barrow it was folly to be running two clubs with all the resources that required.

Joining together has brought in ’new blood’ resulting in costs and manpower savings and opened new avenues for income and funding streams.

b

A meeting was called and a vote by all the members of both clubs voted unanimously to merge and to be henceforth to be Barrow Town Youth FC. With the formation of the new club, we were able to secure funding from the Football Foundation to improve the clubhouse and facilities.

It takes a lot of money to keep a club like Barrow Town afloat. We need to provide kits for all age groups, pay rent, rates heating and lighting bills. Purchase equipment and fertiliser to keep the pitches in good playing order and pay the officials who referee and run the line at senior team matches. Whilst junior registration fees, gate receipts and bar takings go some way to help with our running costs the support received from club sponsors is vital and very much appreciated. A number of individuals and local and national companies have provided kit sponsorship, player sponsorship, taken adverts out in the first team match day programme or paid for an advert hoarding around the ground. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our existing sponsors for their continued support. We are also in the process of revamping and re-launching our online presence. It is our intention that all of our on-line platforms will make reference to our sponsors. This should mean that all existing and future sponsors will get wider exposure and reach more potential customers as we grow our online presence.

Locally Mind are in the process of setting up new services within our region and we have been able to provide them with meeting space and the opportunity to hold awareness events at the club.

as part of that outreach the club got in touch with the mental health charity mind to see if we could do anything to help raise awareness of mental health issues.

Local Mind Engagement and Development Lead Rachel Nott said; “Whilst Mind have a significant presence nationally, we are only just beginning to develop services and support across the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland region. We are delighted to be working so closely with Barrow Town FC who are helping us to reach out to the local community and raise awareness of mental health, reducing the associated and stigma and moving closer to achieving our national objective of ensuring that everyone experiencing a mental health problem gets support and respect.”

The club have also held a number of matches and fund raising events in support of local good causes”. charityone of the stated aims of barrow town football club is to Place itself at the ‘heart of the local community’.
