WHO ARE BECKS? THE HISTORY OF BECKENHAM TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB eckenham Town Football Club is one of the older non-league clubs still in existence having first been affiliated to the Kent County Football Association as early as 1887. The club’s long history can be divided into four distinct iterations: 1887-1914, 1923-1938 and 1947-1969 before the modern side that continues to play to this day, was formed in 1971 from top local amateur club Stanhope Rovers FC. Records show the club playing in the London League 1923-1935 and also 1951-1961 and the Aetolian League between 1961 and 1964, before joining the Greater London League 1964-1969. After regaining senior status they joined the London Spartan League in 1975 and in 1982 moved to the Kent League which was then renamed the SCEFL in 2013. In 2021 they were moved laterally into the Combined Counties Football League and were crowned Premier Division South champions in 2021/22. In addition to their current participation in both the FA Cup and FA Trophy, the club competed in the FA Amateur Cup between 1926 and 1967 and the FA Vase between 1979 and 2021.

B

EARLY BEGINNINGS 1887-1914 Having registered with the Kent FA, the club’s first season was 1888/89. The original club was very different to the later incarnations with its

players comprising of ex-public schoolboys, University graduates and wealthy professionals. In contrast, later clubs would be made up of amateurs from all walks of life. In 1888, home games were played at the Rectory Field just south of Beckenham Junction station opposite St George’s Church - near the present day Rectory Road just behind Marks & Spencer. Their first ever competitive game was on October 6th 1888 against West Kent. The following week, Beckenham beat Crusaders 2-1 at home with goals from George Southey. The highlight of that first season was a run to the Kent County Cup semifinal. After negotiating Lewisham 5-0 (in a First Round Replay following a 2-2 draw), they knocked out Plaistow FC before winning 5-0 at Erith in the Third Round. The run came to an end with a 5-2 semi-final defeat to Gravesend on February 23rd 1889. Beckenham had enjoyed a 7-0 victory over Old Brightonians on November 3rd 1888, but their biggest win of the season came against St Thomas’ Hospital who they beat by eleven goals in January 1889. Their biggest defeat came on February 6th 1889 when St Bartholomew’s Hospital won 6-0 at the Rectory Field. Beckenham also lost 5-0 on December 12th 1888 against two-time FA Cup winners Old Etonians. It appears the original club went into abeyance just before World War One. Left: A 1905 picture of Rectory Field looking towards the Crystal Palace from St George’s Church

THE HISTORY OF BECKENHAM TOWN FC BETWEEN THE WARS 1923-38 Teams called Beckenham Rovers, Beckenham United, Beckenham Swallows, Beckenham Swifts, Clock House, Ferndale and Glendale had all existed in the local area since the first club had formed back in 1887. Clock House continued until 1923 when it disbanded and re-formed to become the second incarnation of Beckenham Town FC. Playing mainly at the Nestanglo ground on Balmoral Avenue, the club joined Division One of the London League for the 1923/24 season and improved steadily from 13th to 5th over the course of the next four years. In 1927/28 they scored 97 goals and won 17 whilst losing just two of their 24 league matches to become Division One champions. In a London League handbook from the 1930s, the club are listed as ‘1927/28 Fulham Cup winners’. However, having earned promotion to the Premier Division, they finishing second-from-bottom in their first season before ending the 1929/30 campaign in last place and being relegated back to Division One. The following season they were second behind Park Royal earning an immediate return to the Premier Division. Despite finishing bottom in 1931/32 they remained in the top division, but after ending 1932/33 in last place again, they were relegated back to Division One. A third placed finish in 1933/34 wasn’t enough to gain promotion and after

finishing bottom of Division One in 1934/35 the club left the league. By this stage the club had reached the semi-final of the Kent Amateur Cup on two further occasions and in that 1934/35 season had also reached the final of the Kent Benevolent Shield. They continued playing in the Kent County Amateur League’s Western Section Premier Division for three seasons between 1935/36 and 1937/38, but with the Second World War looming the club then ceased playing again in the summer of 1938. POST-WAR YEARS 1946-69 After the Second World War, Eric Huggins helped reform the club after coming out of The Royal Navy. A schoolteacher at Balgowan, the Old Balgowans Football Club had begun playing informal games in 1946. That club was wound up at a meeting in the Spring of 1947 and reformed as Beckenham FC. “The financial resources of the Old Balgowans will be used in an endeavour to obtain a private ground for the new club, and outside financial support is hoped for.” On Tuesday 29th April 1947, a first general meeting of the new club was held at the Harvey Memorial Hall (Liberal Club) on Fairfield Road with ‘players of senior amateur standard’ invited to attend. Team Secretary Mr AS Burwood announced that the club would enter sides in both the Kent Amateur League and the Southern

Olympian League. Mr AP Brereton, elected first Chairman declared that they would aim for a team in the Isthmian League with a private ground and a grandstand. The club had already approached the Council, but no private ground had been made available so instead a ground had been secured at Eden Park ‘with baths, a tea room and sufficient facilities to introduce good teams to the town’ in the coming season. He stressed the fact that a winning team must be produced, “a team worthy of the name Beckenham.” The Rt Hon Harold Macmillan - who would later go on to become Prime Minister was elected President, with Mr FW Hazelton also elected as Vice-President. The club’s officers were Mr R Pavey (Hon Secretary) Mr AS Burwood (Team Secretary) Mr WC Barnes (Match Secretary) Mr R Price (Treasurer) and Messrs D Tebbett, J Hughes, WJ Robinson, J Gear and EW Huggins. They competed in the Kent Amateur League’s Western Section for four seasons before rejoining the London League. They were placed in the Premier Division for the 1951/52 season and throughout the 1950’s the team was a feeder club for Crystal Palace. The club spent 10 seasons in the London League, achieving a highest finish of 4th in 1953/54. They also reached the 1955 London League Challenge Cup Final but lost 3-1 to favourites Cray Wanderers at Bromley’s Hayes

Lane. Beckenham’s side that day included veteran goalkeeper Tom Cornthwaite who had appeared in Bromley’s 1949 FA Amateur Cup winning side at Wembley - Les Rawle, another ex-Bromley man and Becks goalscorer Sid Talboy. In 1961 Beckenham joined the Aetolian League and competed there for three seasons. In 1964 that league merged with the London League to become the Greater London League. Beckenham were placed in Section B and finished fifth in the league’s inaugural season to earn a spot in the Premier Division for 1965/66. However, after finishing last but one, they were quickly relegated back to Division One. At some point in the 1960s the club had reverted back to the full name ‘Beckenham Town’ but on the pitch 4th, 6th and 4th placed Division One finishes between 1966/67 and 1968/69 followed. Towards the end of the decade, former player Harry Bealey - having held various positions with the club after his playing days had ended - found himself running things almost single-handedly. The rest of the committee had either stood down, retired, moved away or passed. Unable to continue on his own, he reluctantly approached Bromley FC to suggest a merger and signed the club’s name and possessions over to the neighbours down the road in BR2 whilst joining their committee. Beckenham Town FC had folded.

THE HISTORY OF BECKENHAM TOWN FC THE MODERN ERA… On June 24th 1971 a meeting took place at the SSCS (South Suburban Co-operative Society) Sports Ground on Balmoral Avenue in Beckenham - the present day location of Eden Park School. The notes from that evening record: ‘The business of Stanhope Rovers FC were now terminated and the motion adopted that Stanhope Rovers FC now become Beckenham Town FC. The Secretary advised the meeting that sanction had been obtained from the following: London FA, Kent County FA, Bromley Town FC, Bromley Council’ Having sprung up in 1959 - the brainchild of teenage footballers and friends Howard Smith and Geoff Ward in association with Pat Quinn (the Head Games Warden at Stanhope Grove) local junior team Stanhope Rovers had enjoyed considerable success as amateurs playing firstly in the Beckenham League and then the South East London Amateur League. An offer for the two clubs to amalgamate in 1965 had been declined, but negotiations years later between Rovers Secretary Barry Starmer and his counterpart at neighbouring Bromley, Charlie King, led to an unconditional agreement that Stanhope would assume the name Beckenham Town from 1971/72, whilst simultaneously claiming the red and white colours synonymous with that club down the years.

Beckenham Town began playing in the South East London Amateur League’s Premier Division gaining Intermediate status with election to the London-Metropolitan League in 1973. Having by now also changed their home ground to Stanhope Grove, they finished runners-up in the Reserve / Intermediate Division in 1974/75 to regain Senior status that summer. In 1975 they were placed in Division Two of the new London Spartan League (following the offseason merger of the LondonMetropolitan League and the Spartan League). After improving from 11th to 5th in their first two seasons the club were promoted to the Premier Division after finishing runners-up behind Fisher

Athletic in 1977/78. They would play there for the next four seasons, achieving their highest position of 6th during that first 1978/79 campaign. A talented Becks side also reached back-to-back London Spartan League Cup Finals. In 1977/78 Brent, Bracknell Town and holders BROB Barnet were knocked out before The Reds stunned London Spartan League Premier Division champions Cray Wanderers 3-2 at Hayes Lane in the semi-final. However, a drawn 3-3 Final against Welling United was settled with ‘The Wings’ winning a dramatic penalty shootout 5-4. Becks reached the Final again in 1979, only to lose 2-0 to underdogs Farnham Town at Fisher Athletic’s Mitcham ground.

THE HISTORY OF BECKENHAM TOWN FC BREAKING NEW GROUND In July 1980 Becks moved from Stanhope Grove to Eden Park Avenue after obtaining a 25 year lease from the London Borough of Bromley. On August 16th 1980, Whyteleafe were the first visitors in what would be Becks’ penultimate season in the London Spartan League. However, in November that year manager Dave Fitzgerald - the man who had guided the club back to Senior status resigned having been with the club for six years. Skipper Kenny Baker took over as player boss and led The Reds to the FA Vase Fourth Round before a 2-0 exit at Basildon United. However, having only narrowly avoided relegation Baker stepped down at the end of the season. Under former Beckenham player and ex-Policrom (previously Muirheads) manager Willie Proud they finished 8th in 1981/82 and more significantly reached the Kent FA Senior Trophy Final for the first time. They took the lead before being defeated 3-1 by a very powerful Fisher Athletic side at Bromley’s Hayes Lane ground. KENT LEAGUE CALLING In 1982 the club successfully applied to join the Kent League and commenced playing in its Division One in 1982/83. But after two seasons in charge, Proud was replaced as boss by John Collins in the summer of 1983. In two seasons,

he led Becks to 8th and 4th placed finishes as well as the 1985 Kent League Cup Final only to suffer a heartbreaking 3-2 extra-time defeat to Greenwich Borough at Sittingbourne’s Bull Ground. Player manager Mark Goldberg took over for a zany 1985/86 campaign before the reins were passed to former player Bob Chilvers. Having only just narrowly avoided relegation from the Kent League, the club were dramatically saved in 1987. Given 14 days by Bromley Council to pay their outstanding rent demand of £5,000, local businessman Les Chandler provided a lifeline of just over £4,000. INTO THE NINETIES Gerry Shepherd and Micky Wakefield came and went before the coaching partnership of Tony Clifford and Owen Jones just avoided relegation in 1990/91. During that season, long serving Secretary Howard Smith - the teenager who along with schoolfriend Geoff Ward had setup Stanhope Rovers in 1959 - stood down. With Chilvers as his coach, Kevin Sugre took over as boss in 1991 and Town reached another Kent League Cup Final in 1993 - a run which included a memorable 2-0 EPA semi-final triumph over a very good Deal Town side. But a side including Ricky Bennett and Lee Fabian lost 1-0 to Ramsgate at Whitstable’s Belmont ground as major honours continued to elude them.

THE HISTORY OF BECKENHAM TOWN FC THE NEW MILLENNIUM In 2003 Beckenham Town FC were awarded £100,000 by the Football Foundation for ground improvements. That enabled Eden Park Avenue to become enclosed, hard standing to be added around the perimeter and for the award-winning pitch along with improved drainage to be laid in 2004. The first official fixture at the new-look venue was a Kent League match against Ramsgate on August 28th 2004, but the highlight of Kevin Sugre’s final season as manager was a 2-1 Kent Senior Trophy semi-final triumph over VCD Athletic. However, the Final ended in a 1-0 defeat to Thamesmead Town at The Belmont in Whitstable. Gavin Rose and Junior Kadi took over as joint bosses for the 2005/06 season and a revamped squad scored 96 goals but ultimately fell just short, finishing runners-up, two points behind champions Maidstone. Becks were eligible for promotion to Step 4 but missed out due to ground grading issues. THE HUNTLEY ERA – SUCCESS AT LAST The Jason Huntley era began in Autumn 2006 with a 1-0 win over Maidstone United to lift the Kent Challenge Shield. In his second year at the helm, Becks reached the Kent Senior Trophy Final only to lose again - this time 2-0 to Thamesmead Town at Park View Road, Welling. In 2013 the

Kent League was renamed the Southern Counties East Football League (SCEFL) and the subsequent 2013/14 campaign was to prove one of the best in club history. Becks finally won the Kent Senior Trophy with a 4-0 triumph over Ashford United at Tonbridge. 22 days later they beat Corinthian 2-0 to lift the SCEFL League Cup and in August, they secured the 2014 Roy Vinter Shield with a 3-0 victory over the previous season’s league champions Whyteleafe. Almost relegated in 2016/17 - only avoiding the drop to Step 6 by a single point on the final day - they finished 4th in 2017/18 thanks in part to the goals of the division’s leading scorer Richie Atkins. They then finished 5th in 2018/19 and reached a fifth Kent Senior Trophy Final, but lost 1-0 after extra-time to Chatham Town in front 1128 at Maidstone. Becks were league leaders when the next season ended prematurely in March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic before a short lived 2020/21 campaign was also declared null and void. In the summer of 2021, FA restructuring moved The Reds to the Combined Counties Premier Division South and a team skippered by Danny Waldren clinched a first league title in 94 years by beating Camberley Town 3-0 at home on the last day of the season. Being crowned champions earned Becks a promotion to the Isthmian League Division One South East (Step 4) for the 2022/23 season.

BECKENHAM TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB SQUAD PEN PICTURES Non-league football can be transcient, but the unity and togetherness within the current Becks squad was a huge factor in the club claiming a first league title in 94 years. There’ll no doubt be new faces wearing the red shirt during the 2022/23 season, but here we introduce a few of ‘The Boys of ‘22’…

before winning the Ryman South title with Cray Wanderers in 2018/19. First appeared as a dual-registration player but has made the LB role his own since joining in 2019. Loves to get forward.

NICK. BLUE

Former U18 England Schoolboy International who joined from AFC Croydon Athletic in 2019. Old fashioned CB. Not the tallest, not the quickest, but a clever player who loves the art of defending, hates conceding goals and relishes a big tackle.

NICK BLUE

Veteran GK who rejoined in 2021 having previously been with the club between 2009-13. Impressive shot stopper with excellent distribution. A Step 4 league champion in 2013/14 with VCD Athletic and then again in 2018/19 whilst with Cray Wanderers. HARVEY BRAND

HARVEY BRAND

Athletic RB in his second stint with the club after starting 2021/22 at Step 3 with Cray Wanderers. Came through the youth system at Welling United. Deceptively quick, he is a tenacious DF known for his work-rate, commitment and goal threat. ARCHIE JOHNSON

ARCHIE JOHNSON

Sidcup based left footer who played under coach Jim Dean in the same Welling United academy side as Brand. Played around 50 times for ‘The Wings’

ROBERT CARTER

ROB CARTER

MUDIAGA WANOGHO

MUDIAGA WANOGHO

Calm and uncompromising central defender who joined from neighbours Fisher in 2019. Strong and quick, ‘Mudi’ is resolute in the tackle - winning most of the 50-50s he’s involved in. An immovable force of nature at the heart of the Becks backline.

DANNY WALDREN

DANNY WALDREN

Experienced former Bromley, Dulwich Hamlet, Welling United and Billericay Town fan favourite who arrived at Eden Park Avenue in the summer of 2021. The skipper came through the youth system at Millwall and and whilst the legs no longer allow him to be the box-to-box player of his heyday, he patrols centre midfield leading by example, dictating the tempo and offering a goal threat both on the ground and in the air. Can also operate in central defence.

NICK CURRAN

NICK CURRAN One of the surprise packages of 2021/22, having returned to the club. Ended the campaign with 44 appearances and 4 goals. Neat and tidy midfielder who breaks up opposition play and smartly links defence and attack. Leadership and experience. FREDDIE NYHIUS

CALLUM HENRY

CALLUM HENRY

Cheltenham born 6’3” CB who came through the youth system at Forest Green Rovers. Liverpool University graduate has been an increasingly assured performer in Becks’ defence since joining in 2020 after his job brought him south to London.

FREDDIE NYHUS

Still in his teens, ‘Fred’ came through the youth ranks at SCEFL side Glebe - breaking into their first XI aged just 17. A pacy, attacking midfielder who can also operate on the wing. Scored on his Becks debut in October 2021 and finished an incredible breakout season with 33 appearances and 8 goals.

GRASSROOTS FOOTBALL IN THE COMMUNITY BECKENHAM TOWN JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB eckenham Town Junior Football Club was established in 1991 and has grown to 27 teams, spanning twelve age groups between the ages of 7 and 18. Each year the club scales up adding a new group at the Under-7 level, with other age groups progressing through until the eldest age group of Under-18. The current youth complement is in excess of 350 boys and girls with a staff of 30, adding around 25-30 new children and another three staff members each year. Running a club of this scale requires a large amount of material resources, in terms of equipment from footballs and training cones to playing kits and of course, also the costly booking of pitches for both training and matches. The club has grown considerably over the past four years and has a strategic vision and a desire to grow in quality as it evolves further. This is being achieved with the continued support of our staff and the generous contributions made by companies and individuals who want to give something back to the local community and help build a legacy for the sport in the Beckenham and West Wickham area.

he club has FA Charter Standard status, is affiliated with the London FA, and fields teams in the Tandridge, Surrey and Kent Youth Leagues. In the past three years we have seen incredible progress with our girls football, having now expanded to fielding six very successful girls teams. Much like the Senior setup, Beckenham Town Junior FC is mainly staffed by dedicated volunteers. Our longstanding coaches have been trained and accredited by the FA, enabling us to provide professional and well managed organisation for the development of youth football in our local community. Many ex-players have gone on to coach and manage our younger teams, several also officiating at Sunday matches as referees. At Beckenham Town Junior FC our focus is creating a fun environment for our youngsters to develop both as individuals and as young sports men and women. Given the size of the club, there is scope to include players of many different abilities and ambitions. The link with Beckenham Town FC starts early with the younger teams having been able to play Sunday matches on Eden Park Avenue’s training pitch. We are constantly looking to improve on all fronts, and will welcome volunteers who wish to be involved in the ongoing success of the Junior setup.
