Sack cheating Bishop Furious husband demands former Arundel Bishop is defrocked

Susanna Reid

news@chichesterherald.co.uk

A CHEATED on husband yesterday demanded that a bishop should be defrocked over claims of inappropriate relationships. City banker Simon Hodgkinson, whose wife Olivia has been linked with Bishop Kieran Conry, called on Catholic leaders to act. Demanding that the former Bishop of Arundel be barred from the priesthood, Mr Hodgkinson is compiling a formal complaint over claims about Bishop Conry’s intimate friendships with women in recent years.

Mr Hodgkinson will submit his complaint to the Papal Nuncio, the Pope’s representative in the UK, along with Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the head of the Catholic church in England and Wales, and the Vicar General, one of the church’s most powerful figures. The complaint will state that 63-year-old Bishop Conry broke his vows of celibacy and flouted the church’s central teaching on adultery and the sanctity of marriage and family life. It will also claim that the Bishop took advantage of his position of authority with women who had turned to him for spiritual The Bishop of Arundel with Olivia Hodgkinson Dozens of electrical items seized from suspected burglars

Furious husband demands former Arundel Bishop is defrocked

comfort and advice after marital problems. Bishop Conry resigned last month as details of his close friendships with women began to emerge. He

admitted

to

having

an

affair with a woman six years ago,

but

denied

any

physical

relationship with mother of two Mrs Hodgkinson. Mr Hodgkinson’s advisors claim that Bishop Conry has been intimately involved with four women since 2001. The 44-year-old businessman is being helped by Graham Baldwin, of the charity Catalyst – which helps

individuals whose family life has been affected by religious or cult groups. Mr

Baldwin

said:

“Bishop

Conry has not only broken his vows of celibacy, which are central to the Catholic priesthood. More importantly he has, by his own

admission on at least one occasion, committed adultery with a married woman, which in the eyes of the church is a mortal sin. “As a result his behaviour raises fundamental questions about his position as a priest and his ability to look after his flock.” He said the cleric needs to be defrocked and removed from the priesthood. Mrs Hodgkinson, 43, is a teacher at a school where the bishop was a frequent visitor. Mr Hodgkinson said of the former bishop: “His behaviour has been appalling. To think that this is a person who people turn to for marriage advice is unbelievable. It makes him a hypocrite.” He said the Bishop and his wife exchanged hundreds of texts a day over a period of several months following a trip to Lourdes last year. The pair allegedly also exchanged dozens of letters where they discussed their feelings for each other. Mr Baldwin added: “This is not the kind of behaviour one would expect from a church figure in a position of authority whose duty would be to encourage a couple

whose marriage is going through a difficult period to reconcile with each other. “The Bishop was a man who knew the marriage was in trouble and, instead of trying to help, he began writing love letters to this woman. It is an abuse of his position and a betrayal of his friendship with both her and her husband, who he christened into the church four years ago.” Bishop Conry, whose diocese covers Sussex and Surrey, quit last month admitting he had been “unfaithful” to his promises as a Catholic priest. He said his actions “were not illegal and did not involve minors”. He apologised to those “hurt by my actions and then to all of those inside and outside the diocese who will be shocked, hurt and saddened”. He said his resignation would take immediate effect, and he would now take time to consider his future. The statement did not specify in what way he had been “unfaithful” to his promises. His statement ended: “I am sorry for the shame that I have brought on the diocese and the Church and I ask for your prayers and forgiveness.”

Man arrested following shooting in Barnham A 33-YEAR-OLD MAN who was arrested for a firearms offence following a shooting in Barnham on Tuesday (14 October) has been released on bail until 11 November. The man who was detained for possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life and assault after a 54-year-old man who is known to him suffered a minor injury to his chin after being shot in Gospond Road at about 7.30am. He went to St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester, for treatment. Officers have carried out searches in the area and have recovered a paint ball pistol linked to the incident. No one else is being sought in connection with the shooting but police would like to speak to anyone who may have been in the area during the early hours of Tuesday (14 October).

Well known in the area for providing a high level of care, Westhampnett House is set on 3.5 acres of West Sussex's finest parkland, on the outskirts of the historic city of Chichester.

Legendary TV and radio personality HOME COOKING I was asked by a friend what I cook when it’s my turn, I replied recipes with minimal washing up. If a recipe requires a grater, a whisk, a colander and a garlic press I just turn the page. EBOLA CRISIS I worry that our small children are not getting enough good information about the danger from Ebola at the moment. People aged 5-10 have a poor grasp of how far away other places are. They think Africa is two stops on the bus. TV COOKING You never see Jamie and his pals washing their hands before they cook. Or doing the washing up. CLASS I want to thank the down-and-out man with the face of a goat (in a good way), fag on and someone else’s training shoes, who approached a Chichester Pelican crossing as I was driving towards it. He looked around, saw there was plenty of time to cross, and didn’t robotically hit the button. I wish people who would think themselves ahead of him in life, could think of others like he did. STUPID THINGS TV CHEFS SAY “If you don’t have any pancetta you could always use bacon”. Of course

WONDERS OF THE AGE Being preposterously young at heart (well, aren’t you?) I take the internet for granted, but on Wednesday I Googled the name of a man I worked with for a children’s sports charity 40 years ago in New York, and was astonished by the technology. In seven seconds there he was chatting on You Tube, now seventy years old but instantly recognisable by what he is on the inside, which remains untouched by time.

LEGACY None of us alive now need to become tyrants or assassins to achieve immortality. Everything we do is going to be on servers forever. Historians in 3014 won’t have to get out of bed to know exactly what life was like 1000 years ago. Dozens of electrical items seized from suspected burglars HAVE YOU been a victim of burglary in Chichester or the nearby communities? Officers have recovered 67 items of property that they believe is stolen after carrying out raids on homes in London and Littlehampton. Residents who have been targeted by thieves are now being asked to visit property.sussex.police.uk to see if they can identify any of the stolen items as belonging to them. A photo album has also been created on the Chichester Police Facebook page. Among the items to be claimed are chainsaws, lawnmowers, generators, electrical tools, iPods, sat navs and car radios. It is suspected that the property was stolen mainly from the

Petworth, Lurgashall, Northchapel and Plaistow areas during a series of burglaries in August and September. Sergeant Chris White: “We have searched our database of reported thefts and contacted as many people as we can but we have still have lots of items to give back. “We are keen to reunite people with all of their property and are asking for the local community to look at the images and make contact if they think they could be theirs.” A 38-year-old man from Littlehampton and a 22-yearold man from London have been arrested and questioned on suspicion of burglary. The 38-yearold has been released on bail until 24 November and the 22-year-old has been released on bail until 4

November. If you believe any of the items are yours, email daniel.c.sibun@ sussex.pnn.police.uk or call 101 to make an appointment to look at the recovered property. If you have any information about burglaries, call 101 or email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk. For crime prevention advice visit www. sussex.police.uk. Residents can also being encouraged to register their items on the world’s largest property database so that if they are stolen, they can be reunited with the owners - and so the offenders can be prosecuted. You can register your property in just a few minutes by visiting www. immobilise.com.

POLICE are appealing for witnesses after jewellery was stolen in a burglary in Chichester. Late on Sunday 7 September or early on 8 September a home in Grosvenor Road was broken into and distinctive pieces of jewellery were taken. Among the items was an extremely rare one-inch gold dagger-shaped Cartier brooch with

a ruby, diamond and sapphire inset and a Cartier box. Other items taken included rings, pendants and earrings. The break-in is currently being linked to a burglary at a shed in Grosvenor Road between Friday 5 September and Monday 8 September during which power tools were stolen. Sussex Police launched

Operation Magpie to tackle burglary across the county. A 33-year-old man has been arrested and questioned but released on bail until 12 November. Detective Constable Jon Stadius said: “I would like to speak to anyone who was in the area around Grosvenor Road over the weekend from Friday 5 September and who saw or heard anything suspicious.

Chichester man critically ill after drug-taking AN 18-YEAR-OLD man is critically ill in hospital after he was found ‘delirious’ in the street in Wick on Saturday (October 4). The man, from Chichester, but staying in Wick, was taken home where relatives became concerned by his condition and he was taken into Worthing Hospital later that day. Tests have shown that there is evidence of use of Class B drugs, but it has not been established that this is definitely a contributory factor to his illness. He remains in a medically-induced coma in a critical condition. Police were alerted on Monday (October 6) and have launched an

enquiry to trace his movements and who he may have associated with in the time leading up to when he was found. Detective Sergeant Colin O’Hare said: “We believe that this young man may have taken amphetamine and possibly the drug GBL - worryingly and euphemistically known as ‘coma in a bottle’. “GBL (gammabutyrolactone) and GHB (gammahydroxybutrate) are closely related, dangerous drugs with similar sedative and anaesthetic effects. GBL is converted to GHB shortly after entering the body. Both produce a feeling of euphoria and can reduce inhibitions and cause sleepiness. “However, both can kill and are particularly dangerous when used with alcohol and other depressant or sedative substances.” You can find out more about the substances at www.talktofrank.com/ drug/ghb. Sussex Police seeking hate crime ambassadors

LIFE IS A CHALLENGE for most of us in one way or another, but to add to those challenges by being persistently targeted because of a personal characteristic, whether it is your race, religion, sexual orientation, disability or gender identity, or something else, is harmful to individuals and can be corrosive to communities. This is hate crime and Sussex Police is looking for individuals who can support those who may become victims.

To unpick some of the myths around hate crime, Sussex Police is launching an initiative that will see Hate Crime Ambassadors in the communities of Sussex. They will be given information about what hate crime is, how it can be reported and what happens when it is. What is a Hate Crime Ambassador and who can get involved? We’re looking for people who are interested in raising awareness of what hate crime is and encouraging victims to report to police or partner

agencies across Sussex. You will need to attend a two hour coaching session, and you will have the opportunity to refresh and enhance your knowledge and understanding at twice yearly seminars. Sussex Police Hate Crime Sergeant, Peter Allan said: “We know that a lack of understanding about what hate crime is and at what level you can report it to the police are two of the biggest challenges. I hope these coaching sessions will be a springboard for discussions about hate crime, in the pub, at work, at the gym, at the many clubs and activities people take part in on a regular basis and… well, anywhere really. “If you are interested in learning more about becoming a Hate Crime Ambassador please contact me on 07867 501150 or e-mail peter. allan@sussex.pnn.police.uk. “I aim to start the coaching sessions as soon as possible and in an area of Sussex which is convenient to you.”

Health and wellbeing of children and young people is focus of meeting THE HEALTH AND WELLBEING of children and young people in West Sussex was the focus for the meeting of the West Sussex Health and Wellbeing Board. The Board met yesterday (Thursday 16 Oct) at County Hall in Chichester. The Board was to assess how well health and social care are working together for the benefit of young people, and will look at where improvements could be made. Issues under review include the mental and physical health of children and young people, making sure families receive the support they need, making sure children are safe and secure and that they are ready for school and school leavers are ready for work. The Board also listened firsthand from a parent caring for a child with special educational needs as well as evidence from Healthwatch West Sussex, the independent consumer champion for health and social care. Board Chairman Christine Field said: “It is essential that children

and young people – and their families – are able to live healthy and fulfilled lives. We need to help them make the right choices in life, and have access to the right services and support to do this. If there is more that we can do then we want to identify those areas and ensure they are addressed.” The Health and Wellbeing Board is made up of councillors, GPs, health and social care officials and representatives of patients and the public. Its role is to lead and advise on work to improve the health and wellbeing of the population of West Sussex through the development of improved and integrated health and social care services. To find out more and to see the agenda, visit the Health and Wellbeing Board web pages on the West Sussex County Council website atwww.westsussex.gov.uk

Sainsbury’s help kids get active LOCAL SCHOOLS AND GROUPS in Chichester including St Anthony’s School and Boxgrove Primary School are celebrating after receiving this year’s Active Kids equipment. In total 81 schools, groups and clubs local to Sainsbury’s Chichester are registered to the scheme, which has helped to donate 4,218,961 vouchers worth of equipment across West Sussex since the scheme began in 2005. Active Kids Ambassador, Ellie Simmonds, said: “The new equipment will really help kids in West Sussex lead healthier and more active lifestyles. Being able to inspire kids to cook healthy meals is extremely important.” The March CE Primary School was the top collecting organisation local to Chichester this year, collecting 20,884 vouchers. The school has been registered to the Active Kids scheme since it started. Peter Edgington from March CE Primary said: “Customers at Sainsbury’s Chichester have been really supportive this year and

it’s great to be the top collecting organisation in our area. The scheme has helped us teach the benefits of a healthier more active lifestyle to hundreds of children over the last few years and we’re really looking forward to getting active with this year’s equipment. With the government’s renewed emphasis on school sport provision, the Active Kids vouchers really helped us to deliver in these times of squeezed school budgets.” Sainsbury’s Chichester customers collected vouchers instore between January 29 and 20 May, earning one voucher for every £10 spent in supermarkets and £5 in convenience stores. This September, practical cookery became compulsory for children up to Year 9 in the new national curriculum, published by the Department for Education. To support these key changes, over 100 new cookery and nutrition toolkits were added to the range of sports and cooking equipment. Teacher resource toolkits, developed in

National Student Survey a fantastic result for Chichester College

collaboration with the British Nutritional Foundation and the Department of Education, will equip school children with the materials, ingredients and knowledge to learn the skills to lead healthier lives. Nearly 53,000 schools, clubs and groups now signed up to benefit from their membership to Sainsbury’s Active Kids. This year alone, the scheme has delivered over £14 million worth of equipment and experiences to schools, clubs and organisations. Meanwhile, £150 million worth of equipment and experiences has been donated to schools, groups and clubs across the UK since it launched in 2005.

NATIONAL STUDENT SURVEY results have just been released showing a large increase in student satisfaction levels for all Higher Education courses. The survey, which gathers students’ opinions about the quality of their courses, is undertaken every year by the Higher Education Funding Council for England. It takes into consideration a number of key questions such as, “Are staff enthusiastic about what they are teaching?” and “Has the course helped me to present myself with confidence?” amongst many others. This year, for overall satisfaction levels across all Higher Education courses, Chichester College has achieved 91%. Not only is this a massive 21% increase on this time last year but it also places the College above every other educational establishment in Sussex, including all Universities within the wider area. This is a huge vote of confidence in Chichester College’s Higher Education provision by its students and the result of the hard work that

has been put in from by our dedicated and passionate HE staff. Gerry Griffith, Quality Manager for Higher Education at the College said of the results:“The survey is a very positive endorsement of the experience of studying with Chichester College from the students. The results reflect the changes that we have made in the teaching and management of our university level courses. It is good to note that student satisfaction is high in nearly all of the areas of concern picked up by the QAA Higher Education Review. “We are now working hard to improve the two aspects where student satisfaction was lower, while ensuring that overall satisfaction continues to rise. Higher Education is a significant investment for the student; we want to ensure that our students get the best experience and are prepared properly for the workplace even though Chichester College fees are modest in comparison to other colleges and universities.”

Vows, shoes and the end of summer Earlier this month there was shock and sadness for those affected by the resignation of the Bishop of Arundel, following his admission that he had broken his vows of celibacy as a priest. Clearly, some of those at the heart of this all-too human affair have been hurt. In a situation involving adults, if one is in a position of responsibility, perhaps pastoral or caring, and seeks to move the relationship onto a romantic footing, if it’s unwanted, as anyone who’s been in such a situation knows only too well, it can be deeply shocking. But what if it’s consensual? And involving a Catholic priest? It’s not the first time this has happened and it won’t be the last. With all the upheaval we are seeing in public life, perhaps it is time to take a long, searching look at our institutions. Can we realistically expect and insist that a man—or woman— leading a secular community from within it to stay celibate all their lives, even if that is their intention when taking the vow? It seems to me that going against human nature can risk many unforeseen problems and

pressures, hurts and falsehoods, including and not least, to oneself. What women wear The received wisdom is that women size up other women and men are looking at all of us. Does this, then, justify the endless inane descriptions of female attire we all have to suffer on a daily basis? From the Queen to a politician to a politician’s wife, what colour shoes makes the news, as does the length of their skirt and the depth of their décolleté. Boring! Why should we care? The fact that it’s always been that way is no excuse. What did the Hampshire Chronicle describe as doomed demoted Queen Marie-Antoinette was taken to the guillotine? Her white dress. Or if not what we’re wearing,

then what’s inside it. A male friend, a fellow journalist, told me that all men undress women immediately with their eyes and see what’s underneath. He said the world is made up of two types of men – those who admit they do this and those who don’t. At our Sussex opera venue, Glyndebourne, diva Tara Erraught was described after performing in Richard Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier, earlier this year, as “dumpy of stature” and “stocky.” Note I am not saying ‘moustachioed’ or ‘brunette’ Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier. How did Tara fight back? By doing a modelling shoot in Vogue and talking about her bustsize. Do I blame her? Not really. Who would turn down getting paid big bucks for donning swanky frocks? But I’d much rather have seen her giving her critics the finger over a big bowl of crumble and custard. Blond divorcé The ex was bitten by a snake on the Isle of Wight. This island

Garden of Eden has them too, and, in this case, he was nipped by a pregnant adder. Things deteriorated when the poor man suffered an anaphylactic shock and had to be helicoptered to the mainland. The story made The Sun, with the victim recast as a “blond divorcé”. Alright, not just women get labelled. But, at least, it didn’t say what he was wearing.

Flour power Everyone’s been talking about baking, though it’s beginning to cool. I admit the phenomenon of GBBO (Great British Bake Off) has passed me by like the whole of Wimbledon when I’m not in the mood. Writer Marion Keyes says it’s the solution for her depression. We are told baking is the answer to all our problems. So Mr Osborne, if you can’t fix the deficit – go kneed some dough for a batch of moist, golden Financier biscuits. Others are talking up baking’s virtues as being about nurture and celebration. I can see that what we

And finally

word – is to get back to basics. Like walking barefoot in dew on grass. Or is that just me? The trouble is, I have bought flour and crystalized ginger and other ingredients with the best will in the world and it is still sitting there. The road to Greggs is paved with good intentions.

It’s goodbye summer and hello central heating. Cue the cute ad of an ape with a sad face gazing across wintry rooftops to Nat King Cole’s ‘When I fall in love’. Clever ad, but it doesn’t make me like the energy companies any better. And as the thermometer plummets, this short Autumn feels like the rule of Edward VII after Queen Victoria’s long reign. Soon, too soon, it will be winter. First, let’s try and squeeze in hot soup with roast spuds on the brazier and long walks in russet leaves.

More Scared of You Photo of the week than You Are of Them

I’m gonna churn out some nifty advice now because I’m such a giver. There are some people who love to bring others down; everyone goes through a phase of being a victim of this, and after a while it just gets so boring. It’s OK to just feel a bit low about it, because being ignored/ laughed at/ridiculed is never fun, but there are some things you can do to ease the pain. I myself have a Special Routine for days when I’ve had enough. I know how much you’d love to know all about it so here goes: I listen to F**k You by Lily Allen. The good thing about this song is that it doesn’t make me full of rage, it just changes any sad feelings that I may be having into feisty vibes. But if it makes you mad then I would try something else – you also need space to dance and something to sing into as this is an extremely important part of the healing process. (If like me you sing a lot, much to the delight of everyone around you, it’s cool to have this song because if someone’s being a douche you can just sing it merrily near them and spread the cheer). Wear something that reminds you that there are people who heart you. I have jewellery and stuff that’s perfect for this cause (a personal favourite is my pair of hoop earrings which apparently cost cray amounts

Mia Edwards and were bought for me by friends). It’s just a reminder for the times when you’re feeling quite hated, that this isn’t the case. Best til last - say to yourself the words ‘they’re more scared of me than I am of them’. I can pretty much guarantee you that this is true; why else would people make the effort to try to undermine you, unless they’re threatened by you? They might not even know that they’re intimidated by you, so it’s best to sort of let them have their strop. You will probably find that they treat you better if you maintain this attitude anyways, because for some strange reason people seem to suddenly be interested in you when you don’t care. So use my rules wisely because I think you’ll agree that they are golden. And if somebody is being a meanie to you, remember not to be too much of a meanie back, as this just perpetuates the Circle of Mean. Mia has spoken, have a nice day.

group of teenagers in Southern Africa. International Day of the Girl – which was on 11 October – is an

annual day of recognition of girls’ human rights, and a celebration of the crucial role girls play in the success of every community. The knowledge exchange saw 10-14 year olds from Buckland’s Charles Dickens Youth Centre write letters to girls of a similar age in a community in Swaziland. The girls shared details of their lives, dreams and challenges, and will receive letters from the Swazi girls in return. The project was started by The Seed, Africa, an organisation founded by 27-year-old Georgina-Kate Adams – who grew up in Emsworth. Georgina-Kate chose the firstever Day of the Girl, in 2012, to launch The Seed crowdfunding project, which in the following weeks raised £7,300 to send a bright Swazi girl to boarding school. It is the participants of The Seed Girls Group – founded on Day of the Girl last year – who are taking part in the Swaziland side of the exchange. The group

brings together girls from a particularly challenged Swazi community to work together to achieve their dreams. Georgina-Kate said: “I truly believe that as a global family, we are more the same than we are different.

Bracklesham, Birdham and Eastergate latest to go high-speed THE £20M WEST SUSSEX BETTER CONNECTED INITIATIVE is gathering pace, transforming broadband services across the county, with more than 15,000 homes and businesses now able to benefit from the investment in this vital network infrastructure The joint project between West Sussex County Council, BT and the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK programme, aims to extend broadband coverage to those areas which fall outside the private sector’s commercial fibre broadband plans. So far, over 80 new green fibre broadband cabinets have been installed in nearly 30 communities across West Sussex, giving thousands of people access to better faster fibre broadband services. Nik Tobutt, a smallholder and local food producer near Kirdford, is delighted with his faster broadband service: “I’ve noticed a significant improvement in both the speed and reliability of our broadband service allowing me to stream media and data files from the house to my workshop, so I can listen to music while I’m working. My wife is also pleased because she often works from home and now has a service

she can rely on. This new, faster broadband really supports our lifestyle.” Lionel Barnard, Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services at West Sussex County Council said: “It’s good to know that our investment in this new broadband infrastructure is already benefiting many homes and businesses in West Sussex and making a real difference to people’s lives in rural areas. We want to ensure that our rural communities thrive and that everyone has access to better broadband across the county. “That’s why I’m very pleased that we have passed this 15,000 milestone and that the project is on schedule to meet its aim of delivering faster broadband (24 megabits per second and above) to 90% of the county, and a minimum service of 2 Mbps to all homes and businesses by spring 2016.” Better Connected high-speed broadband is now available in the following exchange areas: Ashington, Billingshurst, Birdham, Bosham, Bracklesham Bay, Burgess Hill, Chichester, Crawley, Fittleworth, Graffham, Haywards Heath, Kirdford, Petworth, Pulborough, Selsey, Sidlesham,

Storrington, West Chiltington and Wisborough Green; with Eastergate the next community to benefit this month. Digital Economy Minister Ed Vaizey commented: “I’m delighted to hear that more than 15,000 additional homes and businesses in West Sussex can now access superfast broadband speeds as a result of the work that we have done. The rollout of superfast broadband across the UK is providing a tremendous boost to local economies and I congratulate the West Sussex Better Connected project on their achievements to date.” As the roll out of the new fibre network continues, exchange areas which are next scheduled to go ‘live’ with upgraded services from the beginning of the new year include: Ardingly, Balcombe, Bolney, Bury, Eastergate, Faygate, Handcross, Horsham, Pound Hill, Sharpthorne, Scaynes Hill, Slinfold Sutton and Warninglid. Bill Murphy, managing director of next generation networks for BT said: “This is great news for West Sussex and the joint partnership. High-speed broadband will help local businesses grow, attracting

inward investment and boosting the local economy. Fibre broadband is also an integral part of everyday life, as people interact more frequently with the internet and get access to education, social media and entertainment at the click of a button.” The Better Connected project is being carried out in eight overlapping phases with survey work and network preparation completed for the first two phases of the project, and continuing in phases three and four. Surveys for phase five are beginning this month and will continue until March 2015. The purpose of the surveys is to establish what broadband services can be provided within a given exchange area. Engineers are also revisiting some areas to assess solutions for premises that need alternative fibre technologies. These include: Bosham, Billingshurst, Bolney, Burgess Hill, Faygate, Findon, Horsham, Lower Beeding, Partridge Green, Petworth, Pound Hill , Rusper and Warninglid. The Better Connected fibre network will extend the reach of faster broadband to more than 44,000 homes and businesses in

West Sussex. The multi-million pound partnership is jointly funded by West Sussex County Council, which is investing £6.26m and BT which is contributing £7.6m, with £6.26m coming from the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) funds. Further details about which cabinets are now accepting orders and where surveys are taking place can be found on the West Sussex Better Connected website: http:// www.westsussex-betterconnected. org.uk/checkavailablity To-date, the West Sussex Better Connected project has made faster, better broadband available to the following West Sussex communities: Aldingbourne, Ashington, Billingshurst, Birdham, Burgess Hill, Chichester, Crawley, Cuckfold, Eastergate, East Ashling, East Wittering, Fishbourne, Fittleworth, Funtington, Graffham, Haywards Heath, Kirdford, Lavant, Petworth, Pulborough, Selsey, Sidlesham, Storrington, Washington, West Chiltington, Westhampnett, West Wittering, Wisborough Green.

National News News in Brief • MORE CHILD sexual exploitation scandals like the one that happened in Rotherham will be uncovered in the coming months, a police chief has said. Norfolk Chief Constable Simon Bailey told the Guardian that child sex crimes had «for too long been hidden». He also said teachers and doctors should do more to spot signs of abuse.

• A HELICOPTER CRASH in Russia in which two British men were killed was “quite extraordinary”, a coroner has said. Mark Robertson and Rupert Beaumont, both 69 and from Hook, Hampshire, were on a fishing trip south of Murmansk last year when it happened. The men’s inquest heard they had been dropped off by a helicopter which then toppled over. Its rotors caused them “catastrophic head injuries”. • A DEAF GIRL from Pakistan kept as a slave for nine years by a millionaire couple from Salford is to receive £100,000 in compensation. Ilyas and Tallat Ashar were jailed last October after the girl was found in their cellar in 2009. The victim was repeatedly raped and forced to work as a servant at the family’s properties as a child. Manchester Crown Court ruled the couple must also repay £42,000 of benefits falsely claimed in her name. The Ashars must also pay £321,000 towards the cost of their trials. • POLICE STAFF in England and Wales are to be balloted over industrial action in protest at a 1% pay rise offer, unions have said. The staff include community support officers and fingerprint experts - but not police officers, who are not allowed to strike.

commissioned by the Department of Health (DoH) described what it termed as “preventable adverse events” rather than mistakes, as costing the NHS “a significant amount of money”.

• EYE OPERATIONS at a Somerset hospital which led to complaints from some patients, continued despite staff raising concerns with managers. Cataract operations carried out at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton in May left some with blurred vision. The procedures on 62 people were carried out in a mobile unit provided by Vanguard Healthcare. • A PREGNANT WOMAN who was attacked and robbed at a bus stop in Salford, has lost her unborn baby. Three youths robbed the woman, taking her handbag, as she waited at a bus stop on Cromwell Road shortly before 06:00 BST on Saturday. It is understood the 43-year-old woman was about six weeks pregnant. A youth of 17 is due before magistrates later. He is due to appear Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court charged with robbery.

recently-published

It estimates the cost of such mistakes to be between £1bn and £2.5bn a year. Last year the NHS spent £1.3bn on payouts after being sued by patients over care errors. Four areas of poor patient safety highlighted by the DoH include falls and trips, bed ulcers, urinary infections caused by poorly fitted catheters, and deep vein thrombosis, which together cost an estimated £200m a year in extra care. BASIC mistakes in hospitals in England cost the NHS up to £2.5bn a year, Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt is to say. And the NHS could afford to hire more nurses if the errors were cut out, Mr Hunt will claim during a speech in Birmingham on Thursday. Cost is incurred through problems like medication errors, avoidable infections after surgery, and litigation.

But a spokesman for the Royal College of Nursing said mistakes were the result of understaffed wards. In his speech Mr Hunt will describe these kind of mistakes as “expensive and wasteful” at a time when hospital trusts are trying to save money. He will say: “I want every director of every hospital trust to understand the impact this harm is having not

Daventry dog death: Molly-Mae Wotherspoon’s family ‘paid ultimate price’ THE FAMILY of a six-monthold girl killed by a dog in Northamptonshire “paid the ultimate price” for having a banned breed, a coroner said. Molly-Mae Wotherspoon was attacked at her mother Claire Riley’s home in Daventry, by an American pit bull on 3 October. She died in hospital. Opening her inquest in Northampton, coroner Anne Pember said the girl died of blood loss from head wounds. She said the public should be aware the breed of dog is “very dangerous”. The inquest was adjourned until 11 February. Northamptonshire Police previously said the girl’s

grandmother, who was caring for Molly-Mae at the home in Morning Star Road, was injured while trying to protect her. The dog, which is prohibited under the 1991 Dangerous Dogs Act, has been destroyed. Ms Pember said: “The family owned an American pit bull. The public should be aware that this is classified under the Dangerous Dogs Act for the reason it’s very dangerous. “The family paid the ultimate price for owning such a dog.”

just on their patients, but also on their finances. “And I want every nurse in the country to understand that if we work together to make the NHS the safest healthcare organisation in the world, we could potentially release resources for additional nurses, additional training, and additional time to care... “More resources should be invested in improving patient care

Mr Hunt’s words will mark the start of a poster campaign warning staff about the financial problems basic errors cause. The health secretary is due to argue that it would be wrong to set targets or “issue a new ministerial decree” in an effort to cut out such problems - instead he favours a “cultural change” to make hospitals safer.

Ebola crisis: British army medics travel to West Africa BRITISH army medics are on their way to West Africa to help in the fight against the deadly Ebola virus. A total of 91 medics from 22 Field Hospital in Aldershot will run a field hospital in Sierra Leone, providing medical support to healthcare workers. Lieutenant Colonel Alison McCourt said doctors, nurses and infectious disease consultants would run the unit “specifically for healthcare workers”. Ebola has killed more than 4,500 people, nearly all in West Africa. Lt Col McCourt said: “We need to provide sufficient reassurance to healthcare workers that will

encourage them to come and help defeat this disease.” Army personnel, who will be based at Kerrytown, around 30 miles from Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, received nine days of intensive training in treating those affected with the disease. Those travelling on Thursday are usually based at Normandy Barracks in Aldershot and will join 40 UK soldiers already in Sierra Leone. The treatment unit will contain 12 beds and run alongside a facility which will eventually be run by Save the Children.

Small Businesses Get Energy Savvy Kylee Charles Director of PR Consultancy Mindseye Management

As winter draws closer, the debate about when to put the heating on can became a hot (excuse the pun) topic. Electricity usage increases and bills become higher. Businesses up and down the country will be seeing their energy bills rise, as the days become colder and shorter, which is especially concerning for small businesses, for which budgets are already tight. For local businesses feeling the strain, a West Sussex County Council grant scheme funding energy efficiency projects, offers more than just a helping hand. Keen to help local businesses improve

Chichester Herald provides businesses with an unrivalled, targeted and costeffective advertising solution across the City with a newspaper readership of 83,000. The newspaper is available for selfselected pick-up across the city of Chichester and surrounding areas in a wide variety of locations every Friday. We also deliver thousands of newspapers to homes across the area every week. As well as this, over 1000 businesses

their profitability and reduce their carbon footprint, grants of up to £2,000 are accessible for small businesses to invest into projects that will see a quantifiable reduction in energy consumption and emissions. Qualifying projects include upgrading lighting, fitting insulation or installing thermostatic radiator valves. This is a great opportunity for businesses in West Sussex to not only save themselves money but also to do something good for the environment. Modern day businesses have to be increasingly aware of their impact on energy and must seek to keep their carbon footprint low. There are things that we can all be doing at work to achieve this too. Switching off lights in unused rooms and turning off your computer monitor when leaving the office at the end of the day all helps! I know this is simple, but across a whole office, it can make a real difference. CHICHESTER BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT (BID) is delighted to announce this year’s Christmas fireworks sponsor as A-Plan Insurance, based in Little London. The Christmas Lights Switch on event takes place on Thursday 27thNovember 2014 from late afternoon and the lights will be switched on at 7.30pm. Each year, Chichester BID invites a company to sponsor the fireworks display over the cathedral at the Christmas lights switch on event in the City centre. Discussions with VAN HIRE A-Plan began in January this year and as a relatively new company to the City centre, the opportunity seemed fitting to celebrate their first year in the City. A-Plan in Chichester’s branch manager Dominic Glen, comments: “A-Plan is delighted to have been presented with this opportunity. It really underlines our commitment

to play an important part in the local community, supporting local businesses and residents with a very friendly, professional service right on their doorstep. What better way for us to celebrate our first year’s high street presence in Chichester than to sponsor the Christmas fireworks?” Kim Long, Events and Projects Coordinator for Chichester BID said: “This is exactly the kind of opportunity we hope businesses recognise and take advantage of. It’s a chance to get the A-Plan name in front of shoppers, residents and visitors to Chichester and honestly, without their support, we wouldn’t be able to offer everyone fireworks! It’s a fabulous Christmas present to the City!” As part of their sponsorship, A-Plan has also provided a prize for the free prize-draw open to shoppers this Christmas. Full details are available on the Christmas Festivities

leaflets, which can be picked up in shop and food outlets around the city. The Light Switch on event marks the opening of the Christmas Festivities this year and the evening’s entertainment will include the Community Choir with a traditional sing-along, street entertainment and the famous fireworks display following the light switch on. Shops and eateries will be open late for shoppers to make a start on their Christmas present lists and satisfy their hunger. Thursday late night shopping for Christmas Late night shopping will take place on the three Thursdays leading up to Christmas on 4th, 11th and 18th December, when people can enjoy music, buskers and street entertainment as they shop. The Christmas market opens this year on Saturday 6th December, running for one week until Sunday 14th December along East and North Streets, with the popular live Nativity scene located outside Marks & Spencer. Father Christmas’ grotto will be located at New Park Cinema over the weekends leading up to Christmas – and on Thursdays he will be located at The Novium museum in Tower Street, starting from Thursday 27th November. More details about the events planned leading up to Christmas in Chichester can be found at www. chichesterbid.co.uk

The Great Covers Bake Off COVERS TIMBER AND BUILDERS MERCHANTS with a depot on the Quarry Lane Estate, Chichester, are getting into the Mary Berry spirit of things in aid of charity. Staff at the Chichester depot will be taking part in their berry own Bake Off competition to raise much-needed funds for local hospice charity St. Wilfrid’s Hospice, who provide specialist end of life care services to local people, not just in Chichester but the surrounding areas too, from Emsworth to Arundel. Their care is provided free of charge to their patients and loved ones. It will cost them just under £6.7m to provide their services this year, with only 12% of funding coming from the NHS. The team at Covers will be entering their sublime baked goods

into a competition before they go on sale, on Monday 20th October, in-store at Covers Home Ideas. What’s more, the competition will be judged by St. Wilfrid’s patron and actor, Christopher Timothy, who is best known for playing James Herriot in All Creatures Great and Small. The judging and announcement of the winner will take place at 10.00am. Christopher will choose the five tastiest looking cakes, and will sample these five to pick a winner – the staff are ready for a cake-fight! The public are invited to attend the Great Covers Bake Off, watch the judging and then treat themselves to some delicious cakes, to raise money for this worthy cause.

FOR A CHANCE TO WIN 2 TICKETS, ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTION: Q. Luke Evans plays the part of which character in the Hobbit movies?

Dracula Untold (15) Running time: 92 minutes Director: Gary Shore Starring: Luke Evans, Dominic Cooper, Sarah Gadon, Charles Dance

The bloodsucker’s sinister origins are revealed in this action-packed reworking of the vampire myth.

Back in an alternate 15th century, Transylvanian prince Vlad Tepes (Luke Evans) makes a momentous decision. His land has been invaded by the armies of Mehmed the Second (Dominic Cooper) - leader of the Ottoman Empire and his own stepbrother. To protect his wife Mirena (Sarah Gadon) and prevent his son being taken as a child soldier, Vlad scales the forbidding Broken Tooth Mountain to forge a deal with a demon known as an

Sky Diary October 2014 By Peter Littlejohns

Jupiter is easy to find on the 18th as it will be close to the Moon in the predawn sky. Saturn will be occulted by the Moon on the 25th at 17:00 BST so care must be taken if using binoculars etc. as the Sun will be close by in the evening twilight. Uranus and Neptune are both well placed in the S in Pisces and Aquarius but will need binoculars or telescope to resolve them. The peak of the Orionid meteor shower is on the 21/22nd night which should produce around 30 shooting stars an hour, diverging from low in the E and best viewed after midnight. In 2004 an Ariane 5 rocket was launched from French Guiana carrying a probe (Rosetta) and a lander (Philea) for a 10 year journey around the Earth, on to Mars, then to two Asteroids, finally catching up with Comet 67P/ChuryumovGerasimenko. Rosetta will track the comet, move closer, select a site and, sometime in November, land Philea on its surface to analyse its makeup. It is an odd, battered shape about 4x3.5km in size travelling at 55,000 kph and radio signals take a nail biting 22 minutes to reach the probe. Rosetta will carry on tracking the comet with a multitude

of instruments observing the sublimation of the dust and gases which will develop into the tail as it approaches, then flies around the Sun next August. Watch the press for some stunning photos.

ekimmu (Charles Dance). Granted supernatural powers to defeat his enemies, Vlad is also cursed to mutate into a monster! Filmed on location in Northern Ireland, first-time director Gary Shore’s imaginative epic takes its cue from the gruesome legend of Vlad the Impaler. This also inspired original ‘Dracula’ author Bram Stoker. ‘Hobbit’ actor Luke Evans delivers a star-making performance in the lead role.

Selsey set for fireworks

THIS YEAR will be the 36th Selsey Fireworks. This year the date will be Saturday 18 October and the location is the Bunn Leisure White Horse playing field off of Warner Lane, Selsey. They are now in the final stages of preparation for this year’s event. The theme is ‘Musicals’ so the fireworks by Selstar Fireworks of Selsey will be fired in co-ordination with music from the most popular stage musicals. If you have not experienced this event before you will not appreciate how dramatic this is for those on site because of the amazing sound system used. Colours will also feature vividly. Selsey Fireworks always attracts huge numbers because it is the first major fireworks event of the season and has built up a reputation as a very safe, well run, quality family event. It has managed car parking close by and there are many more attractions on site including a massive fun fair, a huge bonfire, live music from Sticky Rhythm’s back by request from last year, a professional PA system and announcer and a spectacular sound

system. The gates and fun fair open at 5.30pm, live music from 6.30, bonfire 7.45 and fireworks will go between 8 and 8.30. The fun fair

Only McDonald’s would advertise that its food rots

MCDONALD’S wants the world to know that yes, its food can rot. In its latest attempt to woo health-conscious customers to the Golden Arches, the company has embarked on a campaign to debunk common perceptions about the quality and nutritional value of its food. At the top of the list was the long-standing idea that McDonald’s meals don’t decompose. The fast-food giant even hired Grant Imahara, the former host of the TV show “MythBusters,” to star in videos touting, for example, the quality of the beef used to make burger patties. McDonald’s has struggled to defend its cheap, fattening fare since the 2004 release of the Oscar-nominated “Super Size Me.” A scene from the

documentary, which tracks star Morgan Spurlock as he eats nothing but McDonald’s food for 30 days, showed how McDonald’s

french fries did not decay when kept in a glass container for eight weeks. Compounding the bad press

was a blog by a Utah man named David Whipple, who claimed to have photographs of a burger that remained unchanged since it was purchased in 1999. On a section of the site launched to support the new PR push, McDonald’s refuted the idea that its food doesn’t rot. The company said that tests that show their food never decaying were performed in places where there wasn’t enough water in the air to grow the mold and bacteria needed to decompose the food.

“You

might

have

no decomposition in our food,” the company said. “Most likely, this is because the food has dehydrated before any visible deterioration could occur.” McDonald’s

did

for comment. This isn’t the first time the company has tried to fight back against the idea that its food doesn’t break down. In 2012, McDonald’s hired a doctor from the University of Guelph in Ontario to explain in a post on its Canadian website that the chain’s “hamburgers, french fries and chicken are like all foods, and do rot if kept under certain conditions.”

Do not underestimate herbal teas!

Hibiscus flowers are not only beautiful, but they are also very good for our health. Drinking hibiscus tea may help reduce high blood pressure, and some of the healthy substances contained in the tea work as antioxidants. If you haven’t heard of it you will be glad to know hibiscus is easy to find in our health shops here in the UK as a herbal tea blend. Hibiscus Sabdariffa Several species of hibiscus are traditionally used for medicinal purposes, but Hibiscus sabdariffa

Denise Kelly Naturopathic Nutritional Therapist is the variety used to make hibiscus tea as it has the most scientific research available. The flowers are harvested, dried and can be steeped as tea. Hibiscus sabdariffa is safe to drink as a tea, but speak to your Nutritionist, herbalist or Doctor first if you want to use it therapeutically. Hibiscus tea contains natural compounds called anthocyanins, which are the same type of antioxidants found in blueberries. Antioxidants help prevent cellular damage when you’re exposed to things like smoke, pollution and rancid

oils. They can also reduce blood pressure and improve cholesterol readings.

High Blood Pressure Hypertension is a risk factor for heart disease, so ideally you should want to keep your blood pressure at a normal healthy level. A research study published in 2013 in “The Journal of Nutrition” concluded that daily use of hibiscus tea helps treat hypertension, or high blood pressure. Subjects with mild hypertension who drank three servings of hibiscus tea every day saw a decrease in blood pressure without the need for further medication. Cholesterol Cholesterol is a waxy substance that your body needs to make hormones, but having too much cholesterol is associated with heart disease. It’s possible that some of the compounds in hibiscus tea helps to reduce cholesterol. The same study in 2013 found that

Stress and anxiety relief CAN YOU imagine your life without stress? Any kind of stress leaves its mark on your mind and body. Even positive events such as a wedding or the birth of a child bring with them some stress and anxiety. Acupuncture is a proven and effective treatment for stress relief

and is becoming increasingly popular. Through unblocking channels with needles, the Qi in the body is able to flow freely in order to restore harmonious balance in the body. So you will find reprieve from physical symptoms, such as tense muscles, muscular pains

Where does the Hibiscus flower come from? The hibiscus is thought to have originated in South China. It has been cultivated in China, Japan and the Pacific Islands and there are two species thought to be native to Hawaii. This includes the Hibiscus arnottianus and Hibiscus waimeae, and there are approximately 300 related species of hibiscus in the world. The hibiscus is a small evergreen shrub tree where the bark of the tree is light grey. The leaves are ovate and have long stalks. The flower colours are very attractive and may be white, red or yellow. The ovoid fruits may have up to 20 seeds. These colourful flowers are used in dyes, food and medicine. hibiscus tea extracts reduced cholesterol levels in subjects with metabolic syndrome, which is the combination of obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high blood sugar.

So,

with

benefits and the lowering of your blood pressure and cholesterol, this is one tea that everyone should be sipping daily!

and high blood pressure which will allow you to feel refreshed and energised. More importantly, regular acupuncture treatments can help strengthen your body and improve the body’s immunity, so you’re able to deal with the day-to-day stresses of life more effectively.

Alternatively, acupressure/ Chinese massage can be applied to people who have a fear of needles. However, acupressure (massage) is often applied to clients after acupuncture in order to enhance the effectiveness of the treatment. In fact, in some cases, acupuncture being used to treat one condition can actually help detect another, more severe illness that has not been previously identified. In such cases, acupuncture aids in early diagnosis and treatment. Remember, acupuncture/ acupressure is just one method of relieving stress. It’s also important to learn positive and productive ways to cope with stress on a daily

basis, thereby combining them to help you enjoy a happier and healthier life. Dr Feng Wang is an associate of the ATCM and has been practising his profession for over 20 years. He has been volunteering at CancerWise in Chichester, which has helped to improve the health of many people. He also has his own clinic in Chichester city centre. Ever felt sick of dating humans? This man has had sex with over 700 cars HAVE YOU HAD ENOUGH OF DATING HUMANS? Why not make your next partner a Volkswagen Polo, or perhaps a Renault Clio? Edwards Smith, 63, this week told Philip Schofield and Amanda Holden on ITV’s ‘This Morning’ that his first sexual experience was with a Volkswagen Beetle, and that he has had sex with over 700 cars.

The 63-year-old said his first experience of loving a car was when he was “tempted to step outside” one evening in 1965, and have sex with his neighbour’s car. “I began an interest in the beauty of cars when I was turning just 15 years of age,” he said, noting the “gentle caresses” he gave to the VW Beetle, and saying: “It woke

something up inside me.” Smith identifies as a mecaphile, meaning he is attracted to machines, and as well as cars, has had a relationship with a helicopter and planes. Describing the practice of making love to a car on a night out, he said it was “pretty risky business”.

Philip and Amanda’s reaction on ITV’s ‘This Morning’ as Edwards Smith kisses his car

“It has to do with the body itself. I’m not really attracted to any sort of, may I say, penetration. “It is hugging and holding the shape of the car close to me and actually talking to it a little bit. And then of course, the rest is just physical satisfaction – masturbation is, I guess, the word.” Smith said he had been with the love of his life, a VW Beetle, since 1982, and despite a relationship with a Ford Ranger called Ginger, he said Vanilla did not resent him. He makes love to his cars on private property now.

CAR AND VAN HIRE IN CHICHESTER

“I don’t like to pretend to the point where I forms sociological or mental difficulties, I don’t let it get that heavy… but when I hold them in my arms I do feel an energy that comes from each one of them. “It kind of depends what mood I’m in. Lately, at my age, the libidinal energies have kind of calmed. “But it is amazing that beyond that there’s a deep, very deep love – I wouldn’t want anything to separate us.”

again dominate as they entered the next round of the competition after a long journey to Eastbourne. An even opening period saw both ‘keepers have their palms stung, but neither was forced to make a save of note. United’s number 9 had a glorious chance to give United the lead as half time approached, but he was unable to generate enough power to test Ender in the city goal. With less than three minutes played in the second half, it was Chichester who took the lead. A wonderful delivery from the right hand side was directed home at the back post by the unlikely head of Morgan Forry. A free kick from the touchline fell loose at the back post and Morgan Forry was the first to react as he looped a header over a stranded Tanner. Wade Eason came inches away from an equaliser as his glancing header went agonisingly wide

following a Wes Tate free kick, after Ender came and did not claim. Lewis Edwards hit the bar for the visitors from a 25 yard free kick as Chichester got men behind the ball and stifled any attempted attack from the United side. A change of formation saw United go with a more attacking setup, but with men pushing forward, Chichester got their second of the evening as a counter attack was finished off by Tom Groom, flashing an effort across Tanner. Pete Featherstone saw a curling 20yd effort tipped over in the final minute as it proved not to be United’s night as Chichester progressed to face Littlehampton Town in the Quarter Final.
