WELCOME PERFUME GENIUS

You might have noticed things have changed round here, right from the cover to, well, somewhere near the back. We've been busy this month getting together ideas, arguing and putting together a bit of a shiny new-look London in Stereo for you guys. Which for us, is highly exciting, so we hope you like it just as much, if not more, than before. You might also notice the supremely talented Perfume Genius on the cover too, as we talk to him about his

stunning new album and the journey to create it. We've been in love with first single Queen since the second we heard it. The lists of releases and gigs for September have been pretty overwhelming, with a frankly insane amount of incredible music on our doorstep, so we've cut through it all and found the very best bits we could. So go ahead and enjoy, and embrace the coming of my favourite season, autumn.

ON THE STEREO WITH RAURY

CIGARETTE SONG When God’s Whisper by Florida-based teenager Raury hit our ears a couple of months ago, we were blown away. It was so fresh, so dynamic and quickly became one of the tracks of 2014. His follow-up, Cigarette Song has a smoother, laid-back feel but is equally as good. He’ll be opening for Outkast at #ATLast Festival and will feature on a track on the new SBTRKT record. Raury is definitely one to watch. Tom Cotton

LIA ICES

HIGHER

Lia Ices plays The Vortex September 11th LiS 06

Signed to the wonderful Jagjaguwar label and working with Clams Casino, Connecticut songwriter Lia Ices might well have crafted one of the biggest singles of the year with Higher. What begins as a fusion of catchy slacker-pop and retro soul, suddenly breaks out into an explosion of riffs and synths as the chorus takes hold. This is timeless stuff, seemingly inspired by elements of Scandinavian electropop, Far Eastern folk shanties and early Passion Pit. Charlie Ashcroft

SHURA

SHURA

JUST ONCE London’s Shura really has perfected the art of making break-ups and hook-ups sound like flawless pop music. Her latest track, Just Once, owes as much to Phil Collins as it does to Sky Ferreira in terms of production, but avoids clichés to make it all sound fresh. Tom Cotton

YURS RACE

This duo from the capital sound like they’re channelling the pop grandeur of a much larger beast. Bright, shimmery and laced with the kind of harmonies that could have travelled back in time to the 60s, Race is a confident debut which should see their star rise quickly. Charlie Ashcroft

GENGAHR

YURS

FILL MY GUMS WITH BLOOD London band Gengahr have just signed to Transgressive Records and we have to say it’s a perfect fit. They’ve spent the summer impressing live audiences at festivals and supporting label mates Alvvays last month. For fans of Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Alt-J, Gengahr are the real deal. IBEYI

If someone described their music to you as “contemporary spiritual”, what would you expect to hear? The more optimistic amongst you might guess gospel, realists perhaps something panpipe-related, and pessimists? Probably some godawful, P.O.D.-style Christian metal. Whatever you were bracing yourself for, it would definitely sound nothing like Ibeyi. The twin daughters of legendary percussionist and Buena Vista Social Club-collaborator Anga Díaz, Naomi and Lisa-Kainde moved from Cuba to Paris at the age of two, and grew up absorbing traditional Yorùbá folk music alongside influences from the worlds of hip hop, jazz, R&B and electronica. It’s precisely this unusual – if not unique – synthesis of styles that makes their debut EP so compelling. Part-love song, part-prayer, brooding lead track Oya takes its name from the deity – or Orisha – revered as the warrior spirit of

the wind, and finds the 19-year-olds yearning for a lost love and invoking spiritual intervention in both English and Yorùbá. Produced by XL Recordings boss Richard Russell, it’s arresting in its minimalism, juxtaposing the haunting purity of their voices against metallic organ drones, disembodied harmonies and the portentous thwack of Naomi’s cajón playing. It’s followed by the hypnotic, hip hop/gospel hybrid River, its snaking groove dedicated to the Orisha Oshun. Simultaneously otherworldly and deeply human, Ibeyi’s compositions are as soulful as they are innovative. See? Suddenly that “contemporary spiritual” tag makes perfect sense. TALES FROM THE CITY

by A Winged Victory For The Sullen I arrived in London for the first time in my early twenties, with just a few pounds, a pea coat that wouldn’t keep me quite warm enough, and an excitement to see the city where most music from my youth was built. Of course, the trip resulted in blurry nights, a side effect of too many pints, speakeasies in the back of kebab shops with a Frenchman on a Gretsch guitar banging out some rockabilly classics, witnessing some street fights and wandering back through the cold streets to my friend’s flat to realise I had no keys... Years later I returned to play my first show in London with my band Devics. We were used to some rough shows in the States but this set a new standard, the promoter handing just a few drinktickets, a bag of crisps for dinner

and a crowd immune to having their attention kept it seemed. The night was summed up with a “proper” dinner, something double-fried as such, and what barely resembled a hotel filled with smells of damp fungus. Then the Millennium happens, apocalypse is averted, and somehow London gets better…or is it just the food that got better? A Winged Victory For The Sullen plays our first show in an old wooden dance hall. We can hear the sound of the folks dancing below, but above it’s the quietest crowd we have ever had. Things are looking up and the travel lodge never felt better. Dustin O’Halloran A Winged Victory For The Sullen release Atomos October 6th Via Erased Tapes. They play The Barbican October 19th and 20th.

It’s fitting, really. Days away from supporting Blink 182 when we speak, the influence of late 90s America on Gnarwolves permeates throughout; and yet beneath the pop punk riffs and acerbic lyrics lies an angst unique to small town England. “Instrumentally our music is quite American, but you should be influenced by your surroundings. We’ve always taken on that English vibe too because it seems really fucking odd to just pretend to be American while singing songs. Because there weren’t any American or even many UK groups coming down to Cornwall, we grew up playing with a lot of local hardcore bands. For the exact reason that no-one would ever visit we had this amazing micro scene.” In the sub-100 capacity, low ceilinged bars of Truro and Penzance, the kids found their calling. Early tours saw them meeting bands who they’d coax down to the region, building both the culture of their hometowns and the musicians within. “It made us not scared to travel, to literally just get out of Cornwall is a pain in the ass. We felt so much more confident as people as well when we found this scene, going up to random people and talking to them. In a tight room, drinking a beer on your bloody chest cause you can't move your arms, you make friends with the person next to you.”

Although now signed to BSM, the DIY ethics of Gnarwolves die hard, their tours and day to day admin are handled mostly alone. Since flying the nest to Brighton, the days of Penzance Studio Bar have given way to the main stage at Reading and Leeds and, as their ascent continues, would the band want a major label taking care of their business? “You mean someone wiping my ass and shit like that? I don’t think we’re playing the kind of music that world even acknowledges anymore. We don’t want to be a Kerrang! band. It’s this kind of microcelebrity thing which makes me feel a bit sick, these singers who are more famous for talking about their underpants in Front magazine than their actual songs. I think our music comes across as honest. There’s nothing honest about major labels.” Starting out only to gig, their debut album is entirely incidental but gave Gnarwolves an opportunity to truly experiment. “When you're recording a song you hear it 600 times in a row so it takes a little bit of the thrill away the first time you hear it finished. And then a week later, when you revisit it, that's when you get the ‘Oh fucking hell, Lewis has done such a good job of that, I can't believe it’ moment. It isn't until you listen back to it you’re so glad you did that. Actually sculpting the songs is fucking cool.”

The payoff is spectacular, twisting angry noise into beautiful melody, anthemic but uncontrived. Most important, though, is the nod to the culturally barren landscapes from which they grew, a voice for every lost teen or twenty-something thrusting their face into a pillow, unsure whether to cry or to scream. These are songs of pain, fury and yet, ultimately, hope. Catharsis this powerful saves lives. Not that you’d know it from speaking to them, of course, for at their core

Gnarwolves are just slacker skaters, self-professed “fucking idiots” here to have a good time. They get up, drive their van, play some songs, drink some beer, crash on a sofa and then do it all over again. Not for money or fame but because it’s all they know. Punk’s not dead, man. Punk’s not dead. Gnarwolves release their self-titled debut album September 15th via Big Scary Monsters To read the full interview, visit londoninstereo.com

RECORD OF THE MONTH KAREN 0

CRUSH SONGS You can blame Blood On The Tracks for Crush Songs. Curse Fleetwood Mac while you're at it, and don't let Adele escape your righteous bile. It's about time the world realised that romantic toil is no guarantee of creative genius. Karen O's debut solo record was penned almost eight years ago, when infatuation “became a habit that was hard to kick.” Like any schmuck who's been through a break-up, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ frontwoman would rather not recall that time as an abyss of self-pity and junk food. Instead, her adversity is supposed to be a source of enduring inspiration. A reminder that even in your darkest hour, it’s still possible to forge something lasting. That’s a tough ask for a four-track recorder and an acoustic guitar. Especially, when the songs you write on them are raw and unsure of themselves - rarely stretching over the two minute mark and completely at odds with the force of nature you once were. Lead single Rapt sets the template for an intensely intimate listen, declaring “love’s a fucking bitch” before ending on a whimper. Its counterpoint is Body, which climaxes in screaming sonic dissonance. If you come to Crush Songs in search of another Maps then you’ll end up disappointed. This is the sound of Karen O scraping herself up from rock bottom and, occasionally, its fractured torment will floor you. Day Go By lilts across your heartstrings, recalling a time when nothing feels like normal and you seem to breathe in long, hollow sighs. In spite of this, our narrator is calm and in control. She wants to preserve the trauma in pin-sharp tones, and remember who reduced her from rockstar to rubble. Trouble is, that myth was better off intact. Rob Leedham

THE JUAN MACLEAN IN A DREAM

DFA // September 15th There aren’t many more reliable signs of a guaranteed good listen than the DFA Records stamp. And, with The Juan Maclean’s third long player, John MacLean and former LCD Soundsystem member Nancy Whang don’t let the side down. Sure, In A Dream doesn't break far from their previous template of house, techno and disco but their off-kilter dance music shimmers and sashays in just the right places. The album has been described as "The Nancy Show" and her voice dominates (the liquid loveliness of The Sun Will Never Set On Our Love being a highlight), yet it’s the John-fronted Love Stops Here that stands out, coming across as a sequel to LCD’s Someone Great, a kind of euphoric yet dejected, lovelorn non-dance dancefloor filler. Danny Wright

ELECTRIC WIZARD TIME TO DIE

Spinefarm Records // September 29th Over the past decade, Electric Wizard have grown to command a reverence from doom metal fans to match their unfading infatuation with the occult. Time to Die, their eighth album in 20 years, is yet another malignant, festering wound of a record upon which their legend will no doubt continue to build. Not ones to fuck around with unnecessary embelishments, the template rightly remains a blood-curdling, downtuned and relentless grind of Sabbath-induced dirge. What's not to like? Cuts such as I Am Nothing and SadioWitch are, reassuringly, just as menacing as anything you'll hear this year. Cryogenically frozen in time their primordial muse may be, but Electric Wizard know what they do well and no one quite matches their dedication to the macabre. Tom Edwards

KING TUFF

BLACK MOON SPELL Sub Pop // September 22nd Vermont garage rocker Kyle Thomas has been recording as King Tuff since the mid-‘00s but Black Moon Spell is only his third full-length, and his second for Seattle indie giants Sub Pop. Thomas’ main strength is his sense of melody and how he’s seemingly able to come up with an earworm without even trying. Taking his cues from seventies rock ‘n’ roll, garage rock and power pop Thomas stays close to his heroes, delivering fourteen songs packed full of sex, classic rock references, parties, teenage rebellion, weirdness and downright stupidity. It’s not revolutionary but that’s not the point – and Black Moon Spell is one hell of a ride. Johan Alm

FLOWERS // DO WHAT YOU WANT TO, IT'S WHAT YOU SHOULD DO Fortuna Pop! // September 8th The Flowers Band from Gloucester are in their 46th year. Oh no, that’s the wrong one. This Flowers isn’t an ancient brass band, but a trio of indiepop perfection. The fourteen tracks on their debut album are like brief catchy morsels planted into a youthful time capsule, frantic and feverish in energy and sentiment. They flirt with fuzzpop shimmer on first single Joanna, explicitly reveal the pain of love on Drag Me Down, start soothingly stripped-back on opener Young, and wear the influence of producer Bernard Butler most evidently in the teasingly sensuous I Love You. Comprising the best of bedroom creation with inventive melodies and intense performance, this is a sweet, wholesome and very Fortuna record. Francesca Baker

HAYLEY BONAR

SBTRKT

Memphis Industries // September 29th

Young Turks // September 22nd

Can you experience FOMO retrospectively? If so, by the close of Kill The Fun there’ll be loads of British music lovers pissed off. Dubbed her “UK debut”, Last War is the first of Haley Bonar’s five albums to ever receive a UK release, meaning that only US citizens and Discogs devotees will recognise the name. For the rest of us, this collection provides the ideal introduction to the Minnesota-based musician. Demonstrating the vulnerable beauty of her voice and the breadth of her songwriting talent, her range here extends from the breathless, shoegaze-punk of Woke Up In My Future to the acoustic alt-country of Justin Vernon-collaboration Eat For Free. Three tracks in, you'll already be itching to delve deeper into her back catalogue. Gemma Samways

In 2011 Aaron Jerome released his debut record as SBTRKT; a well-connected, tribal-masked enigma blending sci-fi inspired dubstep and RnB-infused ballads. Three years later, the mask remains but this follow-up record is sonically more mysterious: the unmistakably cooling tones of Sampha feature heavily, pouring out above stripped-back production in the stand-out title track. Elsewhere scarily young newcomer Raury brings his relentless flow to the brilliantly seductive Higher, while Jessie Ware and Denai Moore appear in two of the LP’s more accessible moments. There is arcade game colour from the glitching Latern and the Koreless featuring Osea. Undoubtedly harder work than its predecessor but stick with it and you’ll get brilliantly lost in SBTRKT's wonderful world. George O’Brien

LAST WAR

LiS 20

WONDER WHERE WE LAND

BLONDE REDHEAD BARRAGÁN

Kobalt // September 1st The Italian/Japanese, New York City-based band has gone all slack. Nine albums in and the trio hammers out the most ramshackle, loose, gritty and shambolic effort of their 21-year career. And it’s great. Almost. The tight-rope-walking band excels in the exotic art of druggy rock and sparkling pop, thriving on a diet of lush majesty. But here, the stripped-back informality – meticulously executed, of course – proves merely charming and fails to convince. The biggest shake-up is Kazu Makino and Amedeo Pace sharing vocal duties more equally, uniting to croon Dripping’s creepy chorus of: “Saw you creep the sunlight / Saw you creep the moonlight,” while twin brother Simone cranks the mind-melting Euro disco-funk beat as calm as you like. Geoff Cowart

DEATH FROM ABOVE 1979 THE PHYSICAL WORLD

Last Gang / Fiction / Caroline International // September 9th A lot’s happened the last ten years, however Death From Above 1979 seemingly weren’t paying much attention. There’s no major sonic evolution here from the frenetic dance punk of 2004’s I’m A Woman, You’re A Machine, to date their only other album. Luckily, that formula has enough life in it to make their reunion a cause for raised roofs, not eyebrows. The duo arrive all guns blazing with Cheap Talk and barely pause to reload once during these thirty-five exhilarating minutes, with the excellent Government Trash and huge groove of Crystal Ball particularly dangerous highlights. While there’s no ‘thrill of the new’ here, the thrill of the old is enough. Thomas Hannan

WEEZER

EVERYTHING WILL BE ALRIGHT IN THE END Island // October 6th Back with their ninth studio LP Everything Will Be Alright In The End, and first collection of new material in four years, Weezer will be expecting you to rock out to tongue-in-cheek reject music once more. Roping in producer Ric Ocasek, who worked on the band’s Blue and Green albums, was certainly a smart move. Jaunty chorus lines and distorted audio during Back To The Shack is a formulaic spurt for the mainstream. But heavy hitting two-minute guitar surges during Eulogy For A Rock Band and I’ve Had It Up To Here refine back down to inventive Weezer territory. And let’s face it; nothing can get worse than album Hurley, which reached No 49 and prompted fans to bribe the band to split up (ouch). So things can only really go up from here. photography: Phil Sharp words: Lee Wakefield The opening track of Too Bright, the third offering from Mike Hadreas’ Perfume Genius moniker, feels remarkably transitional, if only to subtly ease the shift between two contrasting records. While Put Ur Back N 2 It opted to soothe (and did so, somewhat heart wrenchingly), Too Bright is Hadreas sporting a bloodied nose, spluttering the stinging venom from his lips and seeking to intimidate, staring menacingly in your direction from the disparaging crevices of gloom. We are confronted by a Perfume Genius that refuses to mop up our tears, and this is precisely why I Decline, our first glimpse, drenched in icy piano keys and hushed vocals, feels so necessary. This will take some getting used to. To generously slather Too Bright with hackneyed phrases such as “radical departure” would be far too easy, however. As I begin to tease the notion, Hadreas chuckles, wearily admitting, “it works well from a marketing angle, but it’s still very much me.” And that’s why, you suspect, it continues to connect like a Perfume Genius record should; earnest couplets of desolation that ultimately mask the song’s delicate, euphoric core. “That’s just the root of everything I like. There is always an element of soul-baring and desperation, and I never wanted that to go. Everything has groove and soul and balladry whether it’s sped up or not, and that’s just where it starts for me.” If Hadreas’ initial forays remain otherwise untouched, I am curious to discover how snippets of the album’s most disconcerting highlights, the unforgiving claustrophobia of My Body and Grid’s ominous swagger, came to sinister fruition. You’ll find anger bubbling under the heavier rumbles of sonic experimentation, but for the most part, Too Bright is the sound of extraordinary defiance.

Perfume Genius

“I don’t really know what happened. I drank a lot more caffeine, I smoked a lot, I paced around and I had my finger out pointing. I was a lot more this phantom person while writing,” he recalls. “This time, I started with sounds more, instead of lyrics. I remembered that these songs are going to be played live, knowing that I was going into a studio and thinking about what I would want. Some of the newer songs, when we’d play them at shows, it was sort of...fun.” He laughs, sounding almost surprised. “Even though it’s a little more nerve-wracking being more performance-y, I felt like it was important for me to do. After I play the new songs and I go back to a quiet one, I’m too amped up. I freak myself out a little bit. I have to map out the set a bit more, so that each song is kind to the next one.” With a soft nudge in direction, has the sentiment of alienating fans interfered with his thought process? “I didn’t think about it until you started asking questions!” Hadreas protests. “I guess some people would think that it means that I’m dismissing everything I’ve ever done, and that’s not how it felt to me. The place I was coming from, emotionally, was a little different, because my previous records were about past experiences and it was like a therapy to try and process things and the gentleness of things that had happened to me that weren’t very gentle.” While a considerable chunk of our brief exchange is mired in apprehension and hesitant pauses, Hadreas is particularly aware of the

burden that blights Too Bright: pressure. “Whether it’s actually there or not, I will make it up,” he grimly assures me. “It’s all I’ve got, my music, that’s it. I don’t really have anywhere else to go if this doesn’t work out. This is the dream that I’m obsessed with, that I think about constantly and worry about pretty much all the time. I feel a sense of duty about it, that I don’t have for anything else, so I don’t mind any of it. I’m successful if I lose myself. It’s a weird goal, I guess.” Confessing admiration for artists “that are not afraid to go 100% in one direction, no matter how dark it is” and “Elvis, classic dude musicians, I got off on affecting that style on a couple of occasions,” as I prepare to wrap up our captivating dialogue, a nagging sense of contradiction grips me. The record is driven by ferocity, a gruelling thirty five minutes that haunts you long after falling silent, yet it boasts the buoyant title of Too Bright? “There are things you could do to make yourself feel better or behaviours you could adopt and it’s me saying ‘no thanks’ to all of that. I think Too Bright is that voice of hope and giving me that option and saying, ‘no, I’m still pissed off and I’m just going to sit.’” For as long as Mike Hadreas continues to console us as Perfume Genius, we wouldn’t want it any other way.

a selection of new stuff we’re excited about: BURGERSHACK Helped in no small part by

the exploits of renowned burger detective, Burgerac, London In Stereo has long been fuelled by the capital’s best burgers. So news he was starting Burgershack - a pop-up at Marylebone pub The Royal Oak - was greeted with raucous high-fives all round. With The Butchery’s Nathan Mills supplying the patties (a special blend of cuts just for Burgershack) and Rob Flowers’ playful design skills adorning everything from the greaseproof paper to the sauce bottles, we’re expecting a unique, and super-tasty, experience. The cheeseburger promises to evoke childhood burger memories (think McD’s but really, really, good), whilst the pancetta-topped Burgershack burger just sounds incredible. Burgerac also spoke to us excitedly about how great the chicken burger is, and with sides including jalapeño chilli poppers you can be sure we’re going to be spending a lot of time there. Burgershack’s open now at The Royal Oak, W1H 1DP burgershack.co // @Burgershack_

5x15: Simon Armitage in conversation with Melvyn Bragg 5x15 are dedicated to bringing the most interesting of people together to create interesting and unique events. This month one of our most acclaimed and facinating poets, Simon Armitage, will be joined for a slightly different evening of discussion and readings by broadcaster and presenter Melvyn Bragg. Marking the publication of Armitage’s Paper Aeroplane: Selected Poems 1989-2014, it’s clear he’ll continue to cement his place in people’s hearts and minds, first formed with the release of his debut Zoom! in 1987. Nathan Sawaya: ART OF THE BRICK The Brainchild of New York based artist Nathan Sawaya, The Art of the Brick is heading to the UK for the first time. Created with literally millions of LEGO bricks, it’s the first exhibition of its kind to travel the world with such success. Ranging from replicas of iconic classical work to conceptual pieces, Sawaya aims to change the way we view LEGO and “elevate this simple plaything to a place it has never been before”. The bold brilliance of this huge exhibition, using such a familiar medium, will make it a joy to explore. Opening September 26th // Old Truman Brewery // £14.50 // artofthebrick.co.uk // @Artofthebrickuk

PROTEIN BLOCK PARTY Protein’s annual block party has proven to be a meticulously curated day of food, drink, art, music and more, making it one of the most enjoyable free events around, and with all the proceeds going to Amnesty International there’s no reason to hold back. It’ll be bigger than ever this year with food from our favourites Voodoo Ray’s, Rita’s, Lyle’s among others, and with their shiny new location of New Inn Yard they’ll be taking the whole street to make this party practically irresistible. They’ll be revealing plenty of surprises in the coming weeks so be sure to keep an eye out. September 27th // New Inn Yard, EC2A 3EY // Free prote.in/blockparty LiS 31

VISIONS FESTIVAL Various Venues // August 2nd Of all the young festivals populating the summer circuit, few offer a more welcome return than Visions; a bill stacked with eclectic, exciting artists, impeccable organisation and an atmosphere conducive to rare feelings of, y’know, togetherness. Beyond the music there’s rare craft beers courtesy of Brooklyn Brewery, a record fair, comics, tattoos and, hell, even Andrew WK hosting arm-wrestling competitions on the panoramic rooftop of Netil House. But the music. The music; We bounce between the four venues, thrilling to the grungy cacophony of Cheetahs at The Laundry, dancing in sweaty abandon to the pop wonder of Yumi Zouma’s The Bray at Brewhouse, getting lost in the oddity sounds of Jaako Eino Kalvi at Oval Space and

BEACONS FESTIVAL Heslaker Farm // August 7th-10th You’ve probably never been to Skipton, but after this year’s Beacons I suggest you make plans to visit. Boasting a top-quality line-up (with help from Noisey and Resident Advisor) and set in the picturesque Yorkshire Dales, they deserve a medal for the ticket price. Friday saw Daphni expertly mixing afro-funk into militant electro, to 2-step garage then soca carnival riddims. Dusky, got the party started early on Saturday with grade-A techno

treasuring every rich moment of Eleanor Friedberger’s exquisite story-telling in the kitschy confines of the New Empowering Church. Earlier in the day we’d raised glasses with celebratory vigour at the news Joanna Gruesome were last minute additions to the bill, joining their touring partners Perfect Pussy who defy sound problems to deliver a performance of ferocious energy and mesmerising stage presence. Are Joanna Gruesome awesome? Well, good god, of course they are. It’s Andrew WK though who really owns the day. Approach this with enthusiasm and an open-mind and you can’t fail to have the absolute time of your life. Everyone’s dancing, everyone’s crowd-surfing, everyone’s on the stage, WK’s in the crowd, WK’s happy. Everyone’s happy. Like, really happy. Oh man. Only at Visions. Nate Rockwell

bombs. Erol Alkan intensified proceedings with trippy acid-house, while Special Request shifted a heaving crowd into top gear with a jungle-laced slot. The music may end at a modest 2am but there’s plenty to occupy those who can’t sleep, from a whisky-cabaret den to late-night classic Simpsons showings. Hurricane Bertha’s arrival on Sunday created the perfect backdrop for a day of no-bullshit bands, especially Sleaford Mods who drew a large and diverse crowd to their expletiveladen social commentary. When it comes to boutique festival programming, Beacons has now set the benchmark. Dan Smith

Re Est. 2014

by Benedict Edwards Festivals are a strange business. Over the past few years, we've been seeing less enormous, stalwart bands who can headline enormous events year after year. This will continue. The Metallicas and Iron Maidens of this world have to retire at some point, and they're not going to be replaced in today's throwaway music industry. However, the public demand for festivals isn't going anywhere. To many, this means the opportunity to start new events. Great, huh? Well, maybe. I love the idea of having lots of options to choose from when I'm planning my summer. However, I like being confident that I'm putting my money into a well planned and financially sound venture, as opposed to something put together on wishes and promises by people without the experience or qualifications needed to successfully organise such a behemoth task. We're seeing the latter happen every summer, these days. Almost invariably, this results in catastrophic failure, and thousands of pounds being pissed away. When this happens, who actually loses out? Generally not the festival organisers. Standard practice is to set up a limited liability company for the nominal fee of a pound, and run the year's event under that banner. That way, if it all goes under, the only bankruptcy involved is that of the “company, not the owners. No, the people who lose out most are traders (who pay thousands up front in pitch fees), press/advertisers (who as small creditors will be left until last in insolvency proceedings), and of course the punters themselves (who buy tickets, transport, accommodation, et cetera). This can't continue. Maybe local authorities need to start acting like old-school bank managers, flatly refusing permission for this type of event until they've seen fool-proof, air-tight plans. it seems like just a few more large failures would be enough to destroy the reputation of the UK festival scene entirely. And that would be a real loss. LiS 61
