WELCOME November is really being good to us, huh? What with Rockfeedback, and their incredible Illuminations shows, and ATP bringing a bit of their End of an Era festival to our doorstep, taking over Netil House, there’s essentially no excuse not to get into gear and start warming up for the Christmas party season.

What would you get if you mixed Wolf Alice with Caitlin Rose? The answer is Honeyblood, an exciting garage-pop duo who hail from bonny Scotland. Stina Tweeddale and Shona McViccar recently signed with Fat Cat Records, and their excellent debut single ‘Bud’ is slated for a November release date. This is an absolute belter of a track, that’s easily one of the most infectious rock tunes of 2013. It’s driven by some upbeat guitar work and Tweeddale’s gorgeous vocals.
Mutual Benefit is the moniker of Boston native Jordan Lee and his new single, ‘Advanced Falconry’, is one of the prettiest songs I’ve stumbled upon in recent memory. Taken from his recently released full-length, ‘Love’s Crushing Diamond’, ‘Advanced Falconry’ is a simply beautiful folk song with pretty string arrangements and warm harmonies. Everything on this track, from the violin - drenched in melancholy - to Lee’s gently plucked banjo is just perfect.

Having slept on his debut single ‘Drive (Part 1)’, there was no way I was going to make the same mistake and pass up the opportunity to share a track this good. ‘Eden’ mixes seductive lyrics with dark instrumentals and some very smooth beats. It reminds me a little of Jai Paul, which is never ever a bad thing.
BLOOD CULTURES INDIAN SUMMER
‘Indian Summer’ is the debut release by elusive New Jersey producer Blood Cultures. A simple, yet really effective track, that’s built around an array of low-key instrumentals and his own hazy vocals. I’m expecting to hear a lot more from him in the coming months.

IT’S ONLY LOVE Having already shared ‘Jeremiah (The Denier)’ and ‘Afraid Of The Dark’, Ejecta the electro-pop project of Joel Ford and Leanne Macomber - now give us another simply beautiful single. A smouldering and seductive pop track, drenched in just about everything there is to love about 80s style synth-pop.

Where grunge sensibilities collide in a compact space with raw, DIY punk aesthetics you’ll find Philadelphia by way of Birmingham quartet Swearin’. Where Allison Crutchfield's bittersweet vocals linger amongst perfect downbeat melodies and Kyle Gilbride's distinctly 90s alt-rock drawl penetrates walls of scrappy, frenzied noise you’ll find their brilliant second album 'Surfing Strange'. A sprawling yet somehow razor sharp 30 minutes of fuzzy guitars, crashing rhythms and breathy threadbare confessionals 'Surfing Strange' is as charming as it is exhilarating, and certainly more focused than its self-titled predecessor. These words also go some way to describing Allison herself: She's witty, relaxed and, as she talks to me mid backstage snacking in Berlin, you can hear the smile behind her confident voice. Of the core melodic shift in the new material Allison explains that “The first record we put out had a lot of time restrictions and tight deadlines. This time we had nothing but time to work everything out as we went. We were ready to make something new” which certainly transpires in the fully formed, controlled chaos of numbers like 'Dust In The Gold Sack', the classic indie perfection of 'Watered Down' and slow moving pop currents of tracks like 'Loretta's Flowers'.
“The last record was also more representative of the fact that there were three songwriters. It wasn't nearly as collaborative. I had some songs, Kyle had some songs and Keith [Spencer, their bassist] had a couple of songs and they were all completely finished. Then with this record it was more like we had some bare-bones ideas that we really collaborated on.” Working together in close-knit quarters with friendships still forming, the resulting effort finds itself in more immersive
“WE WERE READY TO MAKE SOMETHING NEW” territory, exploring the depths of the four-piece’s differences whilst weaving a thread of consistency throughout. “It's a lot heavier, a lot more mid-tempo and I also think it's a lot more representative of the music we listen to, even though the four of us have completely different tastes.” Exploring America when she was younger in bands like P.S Eliot, and the Ackleys before that, has clearly had an impact on Allison's tastes “Going to Brooklyn and New York City was really big for me because obviously it's a legendary punk city - I'm very excited about London for the same reason.”
I later ask what the conflicting tastes are from the others before Allison admits that they are all centred around punk and rock n roll. I love that there are enough nuances within the genre closest to their hearts to warrant disagreements over what to play in the car on tour but it's because they end up having to “talk about everything” that Swearin' sound the way they do. We wouldn't want them any other way.

C AT E L E B O N TA L E S F R O M T H E C I T Y. . . On my first ever voyage into the big smoke I had somehow managed to convince my poor mother that I was buckled in to the car good and tight, except I wasn’t. I remember this feeling like a great feat until I sliced my head open on the medieval chair mechanics of our Ford Fiesta when I ended up in the foot well after a braking incident. I was three years old and clearly an asshole. My favourite underwater themed dress was now covered in blood and both my sister and mother were a bit freaked out. We were barely ten minutes into the four-and-a-half-hour drive to London. A quick stop off at my grandmother’s house in Cwmduad to clean up and we were on our way again. I don’t remember much else of the journey, not because I was concussed, I don’t think, but because I was only three and the M4 is not a laugh at the best of times. We were travelling to stay with my dad’s sister, Aunty Sue, who had been in London all my life. We pulled up on a cobbled street adjacent to a long rectangular building that was divided into neat little boxes. Coming from a place where the outside spilled inside and vice versa, this was pretty alien to me but I adored the containment of her nest. It was the cosiest place I’d ever been in my life and was meticulously brimming with her favourite things – mostly books as I recall, and a cosy lamp that cast a warm yellow glow on us and all her prize possessions. And even now when I think of London that image still appears to me first - a small cobbled street lined with yellow-lit snug boxes with my starfish dress drying outside on the red brick balcony. It has become something of a broken-record observation, but the volume of unerringly cool female-fronted music being exported by Scandinavia is quite mind-boggling: From the chart dominating attitude of Icona Pop to NONONO’s earworm of the year, the region has an unavoidable penchant for producing wonderfully infectious pop. Perhaps no one is guiltier of this unerring cool than Denmark’s Karen Marie Ørsted, aka MØ. Producing big, punchy tracks that embrace her plethora of influences, she is undoubtedly a front-runner of the aforementioned scene. But what is the secret to this Nordic success? "I talked to a friend of mine the other day about it and we were like, maybe it’s just the melancholy and the nature and the isolation?" She calmly tells me, moments after wowing a London ad agency with a no-holding-back performance in their coffee bar; "I dunno. I’ve thought a lot about it – I haven’t got an answer yet!" "I came from a small suburb to another very small town so it was, yeah, it was kind of isolated but when I look back I had a very nice childhood. It was kind of nice to wander around in the suburbs dreaming about stuff." However it was a very British institution we have to thank for jump-starting her life in music:
“I started when I was seven when I got my first record, which was Spice Girls and I was like, that's what I want to do. I'm not from a musical family, none of them are musicians, so I knew I had to work hard for this! I just started writing song after song back then; it just very quickly became my big passion and has been ever since.”
"When I started in 2009 it was this crunk rap, very attitudey thing, I was swearing a lot!" Listening to MØ, the Spice Girls' manufactured tones may seem a million miles away, but their 'Girl Power' attitude simmers beneath everything she does, with tracks like 'Waste Of Time' and 'Maiden' highlighting a major theme in her work: "When I started in 2009 it was this crunk rap, very attitudey thing, I was swearing a lot! That’s why I came up with the name MØ because in Danish that means a virgin so it was ironic. But I chose to stay with the name because now it's this whole thing about being a virgin to life, and young and naïve and restless and bored with youth." Throw in her musical idols - Sonic Youth (there's that word again), Yeah Yeah Yeahs (also a Karen O) and Santigold alongside a "fascination" with punk, crunk rap and grunge, and the recipe starts to come together. "I started to dig into what I really wanted to write about - being more personal. Slowly this developed and then my manager hooked me up with Ronni [Vindahl]. He plays guitar in the band and is an amazing producer, the main producer on the record.
When we hooked up it all just made sense - he understands my sound. That was just the perfect match and all this happened!" With a debut full-length delayed until early next year, for now we will have to make do with her Chess Club released 'Bikini Daze' EP, a teaser that includes the brass heavy, Diplo featuring, 'XXX 88', as well as an insight into MØ's creative process: "I really like the contrast; I like the very, you know, "Grrr!" but then I also like being emotional and deep; the totally aggressive and the totally vulnerable. I like to play with these balances. On the EP the last track 'Freedom' is a cappella almost, and that's also kind of to show the fans how me and Ronni work: I make the a cappella versions first on almost all my songs and then Ronni gets all the vocal parts and producers them together." Speaking to Ørsted, more contrast emerges; although youth remains an intrinsic part of her artistic make-up, she is endearingly level-headed about her relatively new-found internet hype: "I don’t want to just be like oh yeah it’s amazing, because I know the business is very tough so you always have to improve and be even better. I try not to think about it too much but of course it is very exciting!" "When you are on the road and when you are at home it is kind of like two lives," she enthusiastically tells me as we move on to live touring. "But then again, no, because you are always in the same kind of 'bang, bang, bang' routine. I really like it – I really love travelling, that’s the best thing." Merge // October 28th ‘Who the f*$k is Arcade Fire?’ asked the internet after their Grammy win. But, despite the meme-LOLs it generated, it now seems a pertinent question. Because if ‘The Suburbs’ was all Springsteen-esque dreams of escape, ‘Reflektor’, with its arty sonic shifts, sees
them become LCD-Talking Heads. Sprawling over 75 minutes (it really does not need to be that long) it’s a double album with two distinct halves – the first reverb heavy and groove based, the second darker and more plaintive. The reason for this new sound has (obviously) been cited as James Murphy, at the helm on all but two songs. And the dancefloor vibes that opener ‘Reflektor’ hinted at are lived out on the dubby Haitian rhythms of ‘Flashbulb Eyes’ and ‘Here Comes the Night Time’ which sound like the band playing on a cruise ship at the end of the world. It’s only when they try straight up rock on ‘Normal Person’ and ‘You Already Know’ where the album sags. The second disc is more like the night after the night before. ‘Awful Sound’ swells to a dramatic finish, ‘After Life’ builds beautifully on a nocturnal New Order synth line and it all ends with the warm electronic wash of ‘Supersymmetry’. Though Butler’s clunky lyrics can get in the way and not every experiment works, it’s refreshing that a band in their position is willing to take these risks. There are some wrong turns but, ultimately, the conviction with which they do it means ‘Reflektor’ wins the night. Danny Wright
MUSEUM OF BELLAS ARTES PIECES
Best Fit // November 12th Aiming to avoid footnote status in Stockholm's musical annals ‘Pieces’, the long-overdue debut album from Museum of Bellas Artes, is as muscular an opening gambit as any. And it doesn't take Joanna Herskovits, Leonard Thman and Alice Luther long to get going. ‘Twine's’ pan-pipe intro gives way to a throbbing bass riff, snatched from Metronomy's ebullient third LP, while penultimate track ‘Relapse’ splashes around in pooling keys and Luther's searching, sweetened moans. The dial is set very much to pop, but we're treated to some splendidly yawning indie hooks on ‘Swan Boats’. Elsewhere Balearic synths and disco beats kick on, propelling ‘Pieces’ well away from also-ran artifact, to genuine collectors item. Dan Carson 22
LORDE PURE HEROINE
Virgin // October 28th The key to successful pop music has always been as much about presentation as content: that ever-delicate marriage of bankable music and a persona that the record buying public can really invest in. Sixteen-year-old New Zealander Lorde hits the ball out of the park on both fronts with this deliberate, thoughtful debut album and her instinctive reticence. It is to her immense credit that 'Pure Heroine' retains the minimal, synth-driven backdrop of early single 'Royals' throughout, lending emphasis to her whipsmart turn of phrase. It's splendidly ominous and proof enough there's more to her than the hipster-friendly Lana Del Rey. Tom Edwards
JENSEN SPORTAG STEALTH OF DAYS
Cascine // November 12th One of Nashville’s more unlikely exports, Jensen Sportag proved their might with a handful of Hype Machine-ready remixes. Their first release of original tracks plays out like a collection of R&B slow jams given the house treatment, while crucially avoiding the clichÊs that seem so rampant in the current crop of electronic music. In eschewing big peaks and repetitive beats for smart arrangements and guitar licks so funky they make Nile Rodgers look about as cool as George McFly circa 1955, the pair have carved out a sort of accidental concept album - songs for post-Skins youth in all their late night, drug-taking, love-making glory. Erased Tapes // November 18th An acclaimed figure in the neo-classical world, Nils Frahm is as renowned for his live performances as he is for his intricately-arranged recorded work. The kind of performer that brings entire auditoriums to a collective hush with his sparse experimentalism. 'Spaces', then, tries to merge the recorded piece with live recital. "The attention and appreciation of my audience feeds back into my playing, a true and equal give and take between performer and listener" he says of the live setting, with the same true of this album, or as the Frahm calls it: "a collage of field recordings". Studio re-mastering adds a vividness akin to being present at the event while live idiosyncrasies evoke much more than a studio recording ever could. Frahm may have just conquered the previously redundant medium of the live album. Luke Morgan Britton

Columbia // October 14th You may have been forgiven for thinking that Cults' main ambition in life was to use their songs to sell cider. Alas it is not. Instead, they create delicious slices of humble pop pie. Their sophomore effort lives up its name in 'Static'. Brian and Madeline have pushed their surf pop influences towards the background and instead adopted a more raucous noise than their debut. They're still instantly recognisable as Cults, but they've experimented with far more instruments and effects pedals than before. Record number two is less Beach Boys, more Beach House. It's still fantastic. Damn that's tasty pie. Jack McKenna
Domino // November 18th Having reversed the fortunes of Solange et al, Dev Hynes is ready to repeat the trick on his own career. ‘Cupid Deluxe’ contains all his calling cards – slap bass, funk guitar, hazy synths, tropical rhythms, Hall & Oates-style sax – and it’s superbly produced. Trouble is, Hynes has neither the voice nor the charisma to pull it off alone. Foreseeing this issue, he’s drafted in heaps of super-hip guests, including David Longstreth, Clams Casino and Samantha Urbani (who appears on the eye-wateringly contrived Mansun-cover, ‘Always Let U Down’). The overall effect is of Alexa Chung’s Instagram feed mid-beach break: full of beautiful people and exotic flourishes, but ultimately smug and soulless. Gemma Samways
MEANEST MAN CONTEST EVERYTHING WORTH MENTIONING
Gold Robot // October 29th It may have been a decade since Meanest Man Contest last released an album, but such is the breadth of inspiration and range of styles on 'Everything Worth Mentioning' there's not a cobweb in sight here. Okay, yep, sometimes the flow (that was embarrassing to type) veers too close to that of Chipmunk-suited irritants, The Bloodhound Gang, but get past that and you'll find a fizzingly inventive record. Taking cues from 80s soul-boys, all manner of hands-in-the-air hip hop and even classic MoWax, this record is, essentially, a blast from start to finish. And if you want a catchy lie stuck in your head for a week, try out "Let's get one thing perfectly clear, I didn't come here to smoke and drink beer" from 'Partially Smart'. Dave Rowlinson
CUT COPY FREE YOUR MIND
Modular - November 4th It’s no surprise ‘Free Your Mind’ sounds like the name of a hippy manifesto. The band have said that this record was inspired by Britain’s Second Summer of Love in 1988 and from the Day-Glo artwork on, this album couldn’t be more late 80s if it had a tie dye t-shirt on and took a bucketful of LSD. The title track sounds like a sunset at Ibiza and Let Me Show You even borrows heavily from Screamadelica. But the band are always smart enough to make sure they follow their own blissed-out, technicolor identity. It makes for a head-onistic experience. Danny Wright

Lost Toy // November 18th Though opening with an admittedly weaker, juxtaposing two tracks, Buzzard Lope’s debut album ‘Phyrrhic Victories’ has a delicate beauty as you delve deeper. Taking you aback with lively third track 'Blue Arsed Fly' that touches upon a subtle pop sensibility, it continues with a slower, morose tone, causing easy comparisons to be made with early Tom Waits. Channeling this dragged feet sadness, they’re backed by dense and unrelenting strings whilst making full use of front man Roger Illingworth’s impressive vocal range. Each track swells and falls with emotion, a unique mix of precision and meandering, each of its numerous elements and layers falling together to create a dark, formidable record. Jess Partridge
LOS CAMPESINOS! NO BLUES
Wichita // October 28th There's much to be said for a new direction but there's also an old adage about upsetting the apple cart that must be remembered. And you know what? We like Los Campesinos! apples a lot. That glossy outer-layer, wholly-satisfying crunch and the soft, sweet flesh that lies within. So while 'No Blues' isn't the curve-ball many expected, it still stands tall as the point at which the heavy-hearted sway of 'Hello Sadness' meets the youthful bounce of their earlier records. Latest single 'Avocado, Baby' could be the best thing they've ever done - a high-school romp of infectious hooks and cheerleader chants. That track’s pure pop heart runs through the rest of the record too, and on tracks such as 'Let It Spill' and the sweeping grandeur of 'Selling Rope', they've simply never sounded more vital. THE ROYAL GEORGE Finding a Soho pub you want to spend any time in is always a troublesome task, so to stumble across The Royal George, hidden behind the rubble and rabble of Crossrail construction, is a real blessing. We walk in to hear Veronica Falls playing over the speakers and find burgers named after much-missed Soho landmarks like The Astoria. At just five minutes walk from Madame Jojo’s and two minutes from The Borderline, this is our new guaranteed pre-gig Soho pub. THE STAR AT NIGHT
The Star at Night isn't just for gin lovers, it's for gin purists. Their elaborate menu boasts over 50 gins and (at our rough count) 20 cocktails. Genever Punch, Tom Collins, and French 75s claim their rightful place on its pages, though our favourites have to be the Champagne Gin Fizz and the Seventh Heaven special, with plum bitters. The “perfect” Gin & Tonic is also promised: We go for a Darnley's Spiced with Fever Tree tonic in a Bloom glass and have to say, it comes pretty close. If the list of combinations is too much, they offer a “Gin-decision” wheel which matches your gin brand spin with the drink type – long or short cocktail, or a classic G&T. SIMPLE THINGS FESTIVAL Bristol October 12th
Uninhibited by lashing rain, the vast expanse of M4 in the way and the frankly baffling lack of pork pies in the car picnic, we bravely leave behind the home comforts of London and head for Bristol, and its Simple Things festival. Doing that thing we’ve really come to appreciate festivals doing over the last few years, Simple Things is city-based, indoors, and spread over venues you can easily walk between. There’s no point in pretending everything runs slickly; late running times on certain stages make it impossible to guess when some acts might be on so it’s much easier to stay put in one place. But in that one place we see a dazzling array of music, covering diverse genres, in an atmosphere that never strays far from positive and focused on good times. 54
Fair Ohs are a bundle of saxamaphone boasting raucous kicks; castigating fans for bum-bag wearing and setting the tone exactly right. These New Puritans, all uplifting brass and sombre piano, play a show rammed with grandeur and sense of occasion. Forrests thrill us with a surprisingly party set, making a mockery of the foyer setting and getting everyone dancing. Which warms us up perfectly for the full-on, hell-yeah highs of Nicolas Jaar; an absolute highlight of the day which leaves Colston Hall completely enraptured. Things get quickly more rowdy and loud upstairs with Hookworms getting the fun started and No Age blowing us away with their special blend of anti-party party tunes. The wonderful Seams wraps things up; dragging one last dance from aching limbs that never really want to stop. Dave Rowlinson
ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER
NO AGE
As Oneohtrix Point Never, Daniel Lopatin makes music ricocheting between the euphoric and the terrifying. From the first chords of opener 'Still Life' we are gripped. The tension builds, engulfing us until we almost forget to breathe, and time and after time he releases and builds it once again. The visuals, tuned to every nuance of the music, dominate the performance, with even the most possibly mundane imagery proving disconcerting; seemingly transfixing the audience rather than engaging it. We leave in a blissful daze, exactly, I suspect, how he planned us to feel. Jess Partridge
There are times when the wall of noise No Age create is so brutally overwhelming you can’t decipher what song they’re playing. Then, suddenly, an irresistible earworm riff emerges from the cacophony. Tonight you only have to hear ‘C’Mon, Stimmung’ from new record ‘An Object’ to see the effect this has while oldies like ‘Fever Dreaming’ whir the crowd up into a frenzy. They even manage to segue the riff from ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ into ‘Glitter’. Not your average night from not your average band. Danny Wright

Guns don’t kill people; people with beards kill people… You can tell the angels in Heaven that you never saw evil so singularly personified as you did in the eyes of the man with the fashion beard who killed you… At this point the three people reading this who know who I am will be going, “Wait a second you throbbing hypocrite! You’ve got the world’s biggest beard! You hazardously dressed twat!” Not any more sucker. I took a razor to myself just a month ago and hacked away at the face furniture until my face was as smooth and as bare as the top of William Hague’s head. Only my face is slightly less evil. There was a time when I thought having a beard was awesome. Who has a beard I thought to myself? Victorian bridge builders. Gentlemen mountaineers. Astronauts when the mission goes wrong. Bass players in death metal bands. Men who bed down al fresco behind hedges on A road roundabouts. The mavericks, the free thinkers, the imbibers and those unencumbered by a domicile or money. I wore my beard, long, ragged and proud and bus drivers, feeling pity for me, let me travel for free. So what went wrong? Fashion, my quivering friend; that’s what went wrong. It has been unavoidable for about a year now to venture outside my flat without seeing some Captain shitbeard, looking like an Edwardian naval town rent boy on a skateboard, zipping between a farmer’s market and a poetry slam, with a Nicaraguan low-sodium mocchatino to go. Do you think I can afford to be mistaken for one of these gibbering fussy men? Not on your nelly. So call this a protest shave. My face stays clean until the idiots move on to some other ridiculous trend. Death to false beards. Praise the lord and pass the Gillette Mach Three. 57
