I'm not sure if all magazine editors feel an affinity with the act that was on the cover of their first ever magazine, but I'd be lying if I said I haven't been watching Wolf Alice's incredible progress over the last two years with a distinct feeling of pride. The last time we met marked the moment I realised that London in Stereo, the print edition, was really and truly going to become an actual thing, and I can't imagine I'll ever forget that. Now, they're releasing their debut album and it's everything we'd hoped it would be, and more. I can't think of a band that can produce so many different tracks influenced by so many TORRES
different sounds and still always remain so recognisably themselves. Not only do Wolf Alice have their album heading our way in June, but they also seem to be playing a mass of festivals this year too, so we figured it only made sense to put them on the cover of our festivals special. BETABLOCK3r IN MY HEAD LA-based producer duo BETABLOCK3R specialises in indie electronic and nu disco. Managed by Martin Kierszenbaum (founder of Cherrytree Records) and Jody Klein, they’ve been busy remixing the label’s eclectic roster of artists from Ellie Goulding to RAC, with the biggest break so far being their remix of Sir Sly’s Gold placed in Cadillac’s National Summer 2014 commercial. Melancholy hangs heavy on 23-year-old Kaya Wilkins. “Oh, gravity, damn gravity, he keeps floating away from me,” she rues, in the opening bars of her debut-proper, and with just that one sentence she’s fired a dart directly through your heart. Born in New Jersey, Wilkins went on to spend her formative years living on the outer edges of Oslo, where she reportedly learned guitar by playing Satyricon covers with her brother. Five years ago she relocated to New York, working as model while quietly amassing songs. It wasn’t until last autumn, however, that the first fruits of her labours appeared on SoundCloud. Featuring four original compositions plus a beautiful, bluesy cover of Curtis Mayfield’s Keep On Pushing - the OKAY-KAYA Vol. 1 mixtape heralded the arrival of a compelling new voice.
The violin-embellished My Heart excepted, songs were kept strikingly stripped-back, predominantly characterised by unhurried, fingerpicked guitar, and the intoxicating intimacy of Wilkins’ sensuous, echo-laden tones. Now signed to Bronx-based label Hot Charity - and working with XL’s in-house producer Rodaidh McDonald - Wilkins is making a stride into the spotlight. As per her previous work, Damn, Gravity arrives liberally soaked in sorrow. Deep guitar runs mingle with minimal percussion, casting long shadows across the spacious arrangement, and lending a crepuscular beauty to a tale of a protracted break-up. I feel very strongly about parking. It’s built up over the years. I couldn’t tell you for sure when I first started noticing my passion for good parking but, at a guess, it would have been the Bristol NCP circa 2002. The one-way system was terrifying and I panicked. Granted, I had to walk a further five miles to reach my intended destination but at least I knew my car was parked. However it’s London that has really influenced my outlook on all this. Gigging there over the years has highlighted the virtues of a decent park. Sadly, given the crowded nature of London’s roads, most of my experiences have been negative. Parking up on those devilish double yellows whilst loading in, moving the car to some dodgy private car park whilst you sound check, then moving it again before you play because the owners of the car park want to bugger off at 8pm. Not what the parking tourist wants. Not at all. But! I do have a wonderful story to tell re: a most wonderful London parking experience; Rachel and I were doing a gig in Camden and naturally I was nervous.
The parking connoisseurs amongst you will know to avoid it like the plague especially on the weekend. However, Lady Luck had plans for me and my Peugeot 106 (Zest) that day. A friend of a friend came down to the gig early, blessed with the power of local knowledge. I shan’t tell you the details as I wouldn’t want this to go viral and for the whole world to know but suffice to say, there is a residential area round the back of the venue we were playing and on a Sunday...and it makes me shake with joy just to write it...there was FREE, UNRESTRICTED parking! I raced round and found a beautiful spot, easy walking distance from the venue. What a rush! Sadly the gig was awful. It’s been almost three years since METZ set loose their snarling monster of a debut album on Sub Pop Records, and so the announcement of II sent excited shockwaves of delirium reverberating through the music world. The reaction to lead track Acetate in February demonstrated just how much fans have been frothing at the mouth in anticipation of the band’s return…except they weren’t ever really away.

Parked up at a motorway services somewhere between Brighton and Cambridge, Wolf Alice cheerfully describe themselves as “fucked”. Yesterday, they laid waste to the Concorde II, tonight they’ll close their UK tour at The Junction, and then they’ve a fortnight of press engagements and live rehearsals to wade through before the next string of U.S. dates begin. This perpetual merry-go-round of gigs and promotion has been the norm ever since their first London In Stereo cover, back in 2013. As frontwoman Ellie Rowsell admits, stopping the ride in order to record their debut proved logistically problematic. “We had waited for a long time, trying to find a gap in our schedule, and in our producer’s. Sessions got pushed back a few times, which was hard. But, you know, we had big ideas for this album, and sometimes you just have to wait for the right circumstances to materialise.” All the same, Ellie is keen to dispel any assumptions that My Love Is Cool could have appeared too much sooner. “You know, we’ve not been together that long,” she sighs. “People always say that we have, but that’s just internet years. It feels like you put out your first song and then people expect your album six months later; actually, we just weren’t ready.” Lead guitarist Joff Oddie agrees. “We were really lucky getting afforded this much time, because we’re so much more confident in performance and in the studio now. I think if we’d made the record even seven months earlier, we wouldn’t have been as proud of the album as we are of this one.” My Love Is Cool was finally laid down in the six weeks running up to Christmas last year, with Mike Crossey - the man behind Arctic Monkeys’ early records – at the mixing desk, as opposed to Creature Songs producer Catherine Marks. “We were lacking in experience in how to make a big guitar sound,” Ellie explains. “It just felt like Mike could point us in the right direction.” Gargantuan lead single Giant Peach is proof that they were right to follow their gut. Already a firm live-highlight, on record it’s another beast entirely, snowballing towards a brutal climax of blood-curdling screams, and a riff so filthy you feel like showering afterwards. Taken as a trailer for the album, you might assume that the quartet have quit the genre-hopping that’s characterised their career thus far, and settled on grunge-pop as their modus operandi. You’d be wrong to. While there’s no shortage of wild dynamics, careering rhythms and fuzz-drenched guitars, for every Giant Peach or You’re A Germ you’ll find a twinkling ballad like Soapy Water, which is driven by shimmering electronics, or Your Loves Whore, which could almost be a sequel to Smashing Pumpkins classic Hummer. Considering the record’s diversity, what do they feel their first full-length statement says about them? “I think [the album] just showcases how much we love pop music, as well as heavy music,” Joff replies, before Ellie interjects, “I think it’s a classic debut album, in that it’s all our favourite songs, recorded to the best of our abilities. We’ll leave people to make their own statements about it.” Certainly, listeners
will be surprised, not only by the variety on display, but by tracks like Swallowtail, which finds drummer Joel Amey providing lead vocals. “It was a song I wrote at home,” Joel explains, “It actually began life really fast – like the ending of the song – but when we were on tour in May, Ellie started playing the same chords really slowly, and it just worked. It’s ended up as a bit of a three-parter, starting off as an acoustic poem, and ending in clattering drums, huge, wall of sound guitars, and Theo [Ellis’] sub-bass.” Another track that benefited from this collaborative approach was The Wonderwhy. “That was probably the one [track] that we worked most on in the studio,” Joel remembers. “Ellie had recorded a demo of it a long time ago, and even from that we could hear how we wanted the finished version – it was such an orchestral, epic piece of writing. I think we always knew it would close the album, and Joff really chipped away at getting it to where it is today, sonically.” The band are right to be proud; it’s the stand-out track, and arguably their finest composition to date. Imbued with a delicately-textured, slow-burning beauty, its haunting verses gradually give way to a soaring, almost euphoric, vocal refrain that belies Ellie’s lyrics, which are anchored by existential angst. In combination with Crossey’s production, it’s these dark thematic threads that help lend the record consistency. While Ellie acknowledges that some lyrical motifs do exist, she insists they were purely accidental. “It took someone to point it out, for me to even realise it,” she laughs, “Certain words and phrases keep popping up, definitely, and there’s a lot of religious references, like god, heaven and the devil.” For all its primal imagery and sawn-off riffs, My Love Is Cool is also, at its heart, a deeply romantic record. Ellie attributes this to The Virgin Suicides being a major inspiration, alongside Patti Smith’s memoir and a biography of Andy Warhol’s muse Edie Sedgwick. “We were interested in what makes someone special; those alien people that just have this star quality.”
“I think it’s a classic debut album...” - Ellie Rowsell Ironically, the answer lies a lot closer to home than they might think: Wolf Alice possess that exact same intangible magnetism, as anyone who witnessed their recent, sell-out show at Shepherd’s Bush Empire will attest. Beginning with a turbo-charged Fluffy, and concluding in a confetti cannon-powered rendition of Moaning Lisa Smile, the gig served as yet another reminder of why they’re now rightly regarded as one of Britain’s best live bands. For Wolf Alice themselves, the prestige of the event was intimidating. “It was probably the most scared I’ve ever been in my life,” remembers Joff. “It’s one of our favourite venues in the UK,” Joel continues, “So that gig was kind-of a crowning moment. We didn’t want to muck it up.” The fact they reached that landmark prior to the release of their debut is only testament to those two years of hard graft. Looking back at that first, streamer-strewn London In Stereo cover shoot – which took place prior to the release of their debut single, Fluffy – what are their abiding memories? “It was fun! We went to a little
house in East London and had a party without any drinks,” laughs Joff. “It’s where I find out you didn’t like big bangs, Joff,” Joel retorts. “He was scared of the party poppers.” Back then, Ellie stated that her goal was for Wolf Alice to be acknowledged “as credible musicians and songwriters.” Despite enjoying widespread acclaim since, her focus hasn’t changed. “I don’t think that ever stops because, you never know, you might lose your credibility. We just need to keep doing this, but bigger and better.” “[That cover] feels like a very long time ago,” she reflects. “Personally, I feel I’m much more comfortable at being myself now. I don’t hold anything back on stage any more, and I don’t push anything that doesn’t feel natural. I think we’ve all learned to follow our instincts, because, that way, if you believe in what you do, you won’t have any regrets.” My Love Is Cool is released June 22nd via Dirty Hit Records. RECORD OF THE MONTH JOANNA GRUESOME PEANUT BUTTER
Over the last few years, there’s been a shift at Camp Indie-Pop. ‘Twee’ has, rightly, become a four letter word, prompted in part by bands like Joanna Gruesome shifting the gears up a few notches. We still want those charming chorus and hooks; it’s just we want them with a bit more... kick. With Peanut Butter, the Welsh band’s second full length, JoGru prove again that it’s entirely possible to marry indie-pop melodics with something more noisy, more gripping, more twisted. Something that will bite you back (before apologising and making a lovely cup of tea). For those who missed 2013’s Weird Sister, feel free to take this as your introduction (but make a note to pick that up too, yeah). Because if you’re looking for someone to dial up Tallulah Gosh to Tallulah Mosh, and smash the amp nanoseconds before they hit full-blown MBV, this is for you. Fortuna POP! And if you’re not: we can’t be friends, sorry. May 11th Take Jamie (Luvver), for example. If you lifted the vocals Stand Out Tracks: from the rest of the track, like those internet smugsters do Psykick Espionage when they’re trying to show you that Britney can’t sing Hey! I Wanna Be Yr Best Friend (grrr), you could be listening to a delicate Allo Darlin’ Crayon number. Splice it all back together, and you’ve got classic Jamie (Luvver) C86 vocals flirting with the Ramones (with a bit of @JOANNAGRUESOME J Mascis knocking one out for good measure). More Sub Pop than Sarah Records. And that’s the genius of Peanut Live: Scala, September 22nd Butter; it sounds like nothing you’ve heard before whilst End Of The Road Festival simultaneously sounding familiar. JoGru make sure you’re damn well paying attention from the off, with ear piercing opener Last Year. That’s way before we get anywhere near album standout Psykick Espionage, when Alanna McArdle gets her proper punk on; all Poly Styrene circa Oh Bondage Up Yours! with added sweet chorus. And in the middle of all this is the frankly brilliant Crayon, which juxtaposes Pavement with the Pixies and a bit of the Moldy Peaches to boot. “What the hell am I supposed to do?” Alanna and Owen sing - is “more of this, please...” the wrong answer? Because the only flaw here is that, clocking in at under 25 minutes, this record is a bit too short. But there’s a simple solution: shove it on repeat. Take off that cardigan. Just remember to apologise to your neighbours in the morning. Because this (peanut) butter is going to melt your speakers. Simone Scott Warren

YOU NO FIT TOUCH AM Wah Wah 45s // May 4th Hackney born and Nigeria raised, Dele Sosimi has enjoyed an esteemed career as an Afrobeat pioneer playing keyboards for both Fela and Femi Kuti. On third solo album You No Fit Touch Am he displays a more moderate temper than his forebears, cutting the psychedelic prog influences from Fela’s approach (with the exception of the excellent title track) and keeping everything neatly under ten minutes. The result is an album both clinical in execution and brimming with vitality. Like his previous outings, there are various homages to James Brown scattered throughout, cocooned inside funk guitar riffs. There are political sentiments too – the anti-militia Na My Turn for instance, but final track Sanctuary espouses the strongest message of all: music is our sanctuary. Tim Hakki
UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA MULTI-LOVE Jagjaguwar // May 26th The superb third album from Unknown Mortal Orchestra is a humble thing, but one rich in lateral thought, wisdom and playfulness. Though it’s the slickest music bandleader Ruban Nielson has put his name to thus far, you‘re still advised to mind yourself – edges are everywhere, and while the song structures and ways with melody will likely be recognisable, they’re built from peculiar sounds you’ll find less familiar. Influences are easy to spot, but they’re the right ones; Like Acid Rain could be Beck producing Janet Jackson, and Ur Life One Night is the song Prince has been trying to find for twenty years. If you want contemporaries, you could cite Toro Y Moi or Kindness, but Nielson is better, and improving all the time. Thomas Hannan
BLANCK MASS DUMB FLESH
Sacred Bones Records // May 11th For some of us card-carrying Fuck Buttons fans, Benjamin John Power’s 2012 debut as Blanck Mass felt a little underwhelming. Accomplished as those subtly-frazzled, ambient soundscapes were, we missed both the percussive thrust and the brute aggression of his work with Andy Hung. This follow-up hints that Power himself might have felt the same. Themed around the frailty - and subsequent decay - of the human body, Dumb Flesh is an intensely physical, frequently merciless, listening experience. There’s the gloopy, pitch-shifted Loam, the ominous, minimal techno of No Lite, the industrial static of Detritus. Best of all is Dead Format, which blazes by in a scorched haze of violently-distorted vocal loops, skull-crushing beats and caustic drones. If, this time round, Power seems determined to overwhelm, we’re willing victims. Gemma Samways LiS 29

THIS IS OUR NOWHERE Egg Records // May 4th Never shy of amplifying their provincial roots, Lancastrian duo The Lovely Eggs continue their predilection for accented, disorderly and melodic pop music. They’ve retained the best of their craft here, with the likes of Do It To Me and The Investment exposing Holly’s detached but emphatic vocal and guitar clamour, with David’s similarly wonderful commotion on drums. Rarely a quiet moment in sight, it’s typically noisy and unashamedly primitive. This Is Our Nowhere is to be appreciated as a collection of lyrically absurd, short and snappy punk songs; ironic opener Ordinary People Unite – an ode to averageness – is testament to their unfailing chaos. Anything but ordinary, The Lovely Eggs remain a credit to the DIY underground - but should be playing on world stages. Hayley Scott

Play It Again Sam // May 11th Responsible for one of the best pop albums in recent memory, it has taken eight long years for the former Moloko singer to grace the world
with a new full length. Hairless Toys is a minimalist affair in comparison to the glossy disco of Overpowered. The killer hooks and punchy production have been kidnapped by an internal logic which slowly reveals itself, turning like a Rubik's cube from downbeat techno (Exploitation and House of Glass) to funky bass à la Grace Jones' Nightclubbing (Uninvited Guest and Evil Eyes). Murphy's menacing vocals are the pivot point keeping it all together, and she still sounds like she could chew you up and spit you out - cigarette in hand, standing under a palm tree - no problem. Welcome back Róisín, we've missed you. Woodrow Whyte
Domino // May 18th Six albums in, either means you've cracked your musical subset or you’re milking the cash cow for all it’s worth. Hot Chip are probably somewhere in between the two. Opening track Huarache Lights feels experimentally fresh, with pulsating beats and funky dance floor DJ flicks, providing the kind of escapism you’d expect from the band. Love Is The Future and Cry For You also add rhythmic layers of laid back cool disco injections. But the trouble is, after the three-track opener, you get the feeling that Hot Chip are pretty much doing the same thing they've always done. Yeh, Why Make Sense? is kind of catchy and succeeds in production quality, but if you were hoping for something a little more innovative, then you’ll be pretty disappointed. Amy Gravelle
HOLLY HERNDON PLATFORM 4AD // May 18th
Quite where Herndon’s voice begins or ends is almost impossible to discern. She has the bewitching power to be simultaneously everywhere and nowhere as she tweaks, distorts and screws her vocals into oblivion. And through her singing, the thirtysomething laptop geek of San Francisco paints a mighty dark portrait. She toils away to construct each tune’s gargantuan canvas, as her alien-like warble collides with her collage of club-hardened beats and technologically advanced sonic bric-a-brac. The opener, Interference, displays Herndon’s skill in riding a minimal and propulsive beat – a nod to her Berlin years, no doubt – which is deliriously playful in its use of scrapes and glitches as it seeks to harness its own degraded interference. Herndon says the album tackles “systematic inequality”, “surveillance states” and even “neofeudalism” – but bizarrely these topics are almost impossible to spot within the ten songs. Luckily, her compositions are more successful with their jerky climaxes and endlessly overwrought flourishes, in a manner that is pure Björk even if they lack the same melodic power. Elsewhere, Herndon channels fellow American electronic pioneer Laurie Anderson on tunes such as the chant-heavy Unequal, the reverb-laden Morning Sun and the oddball spoken word segment of Locker Leak. Yes, Herndon is over thinking her craft – and the album clearly short circuits before its finale. But Platform is still a beguiling attempt to fuse woman and machine through a disorienting computerised quagmire that is disarmingly frank, weird and oddly compelling. Geoff Cowart
SURFER BLOOD 1000 PALMS Fierce Panda // May 11th
It’s fair to say things haven’t gone swimmingly for Surfer Blood since their swaggering debut five years ago. Amidst the cock-sure grumble of Floating Vibes and the towering, bite-your-head-off riff in Swim, anything seemed possible. Now, after a difficult stint with Warner and with a pretty mixed follow-up album by the wayside, Surfer Blood return with 1000 Palms, a sort of jaded reverie with Astro Coast a fast receding memory. With a more DIY approach adopted the band try to recapture that exuberance of when they started out. Opener Grand Inquisitor certainly recalls their first ever single, though with a nod to the anxieties of age as JP Pitts sings “time waits for no-one”, while I Can’t Explain has a heart tugging prom-night melodrama to it. However, where they once jumped in feet-first, they now tentatively tread, dropping those killer hooks and re-imagined surf solos for more ambling and pensive musical excursions. In many ways that makes it less formulaic than past records, but while guitars meander through more complex song structures they have a tendency to get lost and drift too close to the muzak side of the spectrum. At least by the doe-eyed Into Catacombs the vocals display purpose and perseverance: “I was swimming against the years but now moving forward feels better”. Unfortunately, with their debut still very much the benchmark, they have some catching up to do. Henry Wilkinson LiS 33

Debut album Jem confirms Nick ‘Bernard’ Delap’s and Greta ‘Edith’ Caroll’s talent for rolling drum beats, inventive melodies and brooding vocals. From the atmospheric beginning of Wurds to the chiming tones of Poppy, the Manchester duo have crafted a record which twists with defiance and breathy beats. On China it’s as though they have been let loose in a studio armed only with the question “What does this do?,” so playful and varied is their exploration of the instruments. Rosemary is a soporific trippy tune, whilst Nick dabbles with some dazzle on the title track with its shimmering twilight sound. Embellished with delicate sonics, the tunes expand and morph into songs almost spectral and ethereal, drenched in power and experimentalism. The sound is startling and effect beguiling. UNDERSTANDING AND EVERYTHING ELSE Big Scary Monsters // May 4th 2014 was a year of fan campaigning for Woahnows, diligently filling every support slot that would take them to bring their sunny, acerbic punk to venues across the country. Thousands of punters can confirm that the band kill it live, and with the release of Understanding and Everything Else, their assured and infectious debut album, it’s clear they know how to put a record together, too. Expect hooks aplenty with a raw production serrating the edges of Neutral Haste and Machono, while the frenetic riffs of Livid / Rise and Breathing Games threaten derailment. The melodies are mainstream-baiting, the hooks relentlessly catchy, all without sacrificing the loose, chaotic and joyful tone at the heart of their earnest punk racket. Grant Bailey

Partisan Records // May 18th From Sprinter's opening moments Mackenzie Scott, aka Torres, grapples attention with a vice-like grip. Strange Hellos may not be her bag, as she puts it, but they welcome us to this brave and brilliant new record perfectly. The young Nashville-viaBrooklyn singer – "I am a tired woman / In January I will just be 23" she lays open in the stunning New Skin – is aligning herself with the likes of St. Vincent with hypnotic Cowboy Guilt and Sharon Van Etten thanks to album-highlight A Proper Polish Welcome; the latter displays poise and power in equal measure as it simmers with a gently nightmarish hue. There's an honesty to everything she does, as the record morphs through its wonderful title track into the pent-up, unnerving The Harshest Light and the beautifully melancholic The Exchange, which closes the album with a bucolic sigh of sadness and relief; you can hear a sense of exhaustion in her whimpered vocal. Aggressive, fist-clenching, serene, Torres has become a front-runner in her genre; what difficult second album? George O’Brien

Visions isn’t so much a festival as it is a day of general life-affirming brilliance. Picture the scene: it’s a hot Saturday in early August, you kick off the proceedings with your best friends and a couple of beers on London Fields before ambling over to your first venue of the afternoon, sticking around for an hour or so and then wandering on to the next. Repeat this several times over the course of the day and you’ve basically got the world’s best pub crawl on your hands with the added bonus of y’know, watching some of the best live bands around today. At just 30 quid a ticket, the value for money is frankly absurd. Given that 2014’s Visions was hands down one of the highlights of the summer, and with this year’s lineup on a different level entirely, you’d be pretty damn foolish to miss out. FIELD DAY Field Day is as firm a fixture in our calendars as Christmas Day - and we generally look forward to it more, too. Strolling down Regents Canal, and heading into Victoria Park, we’ve seen so many of our favourite bands grace the stages over the years, bathed in sunshine - and on the receiving end of the occasional deluge - just always having the best time. Metronomy’s celebratory headline set last summer was one of the live moments of the year, and we’re expecting similar amounts of magic this year, especially from previous cover star, Caribou. For the second year running the festival is expanded into a second day for double the amount of fun, and, hey, guess what? We have a stage ourselves on the Sunday, and could not be happier to be involved. It’s going to be another classic year. RAWPOWER Never has a festival been more aptly named than Raw Power. Promising music designed to wreck your mind and destroy your eardrums, Baba Yaga’s Hut have assembled a formidable line-up revolving around the killer experimental Finnish bands Circle and Pharaoh Overlord. While the Japanese tag team of wild Acid Mothers Temple guitarist Makoto Kawabata and electronic noise fiend KK Null should also turn heads. Throw in Hey Colossus and Hirvikolari, among others and you’ve got one hell of a party. Bushstock returns to Shepherd’s Bush this year, bringing the best in folk, indie and atmospheric sounds to the area. Hosted by our friends at Communion, the line-up is an array of wonderful upand-coming acts, with some stellar headliners thrown in for good measure. This year sees Michael Kiwanuka returning, and the wonderful Lucy Rose also taking pride of place on the line-up. For the first time ever Bushstock will host a huge outdoor stage too, making 2015 its biggest year yet, so snap up tickets now. SOUTHBANK CENTRE’S MELTDOWN 2015: CURATED BY DAVID BYRNE Okay, we don’t have all the line-up details yet, but there’s no doubt this is set to be an extraordinary occasion. How could an event with Talking Heads legend David Byrne choosing the line-up go wrong? Following in the footsteps of an beyond-impressive list of previous curators (Scott Walker, Jarvis Cocker, Patti Smith, Nick Cave and Laurie Anderson, to name just a few) Byrne says “I plan to invite performers I've seen – and I do get out – and others I've missed or have dreamed of seeing.” Sounds good to us. - OUR PICKS FROM THE UK END OF THE ROAD It seems a bunch of our favourite festivals are turning ten this year, End of the Road included, and it’s throwing one hell of a party to celebrate. Bringing together one of the strongest line-ups of the summer, we’re already dreaming about swaying along to Sufjan Stevens as he serenades us with the stunning tracks from his new album, not to mention jumping up and down to Metz and being blissed out to The War on Drugs. A festival full of twists, turns and surprises it combines art, music and late-night partying in the perfect way. Taking advantage of all the beautiful grounds of Larmer Tree Gardens has to offer, you’ll find games, secret shows and dancefloors in the woods, sprawling camping grounds and some of the best food and drink around to pick you up when you’re flagging. THE GREAT ESCAPE For ten years now The Great Escape has been proving itself the UK’s very finest city festival. The line-up is always nothing short of essential, the venues varied and numerous, and to make it all even better, you’re on the streets of the wonderful Brighton with everyone it feels like you’ve ever seen a band with. The sea air blasts away hangovers and livens you up each day for another whirlwind of musical discoveries (and Dolphin Derby on the pier), as you run around trying to catch as much as humanly possible. Last year Girl Band blew us away with an absolutely astonishing show, and we resolved to put them on the cover of the magazine, so we can’t wait to see who might do the same this year. Excitingly, we have a stage on Thursday night too, some come say hey to us at Patterns. BLISSFIELDS As far as you can get from your conventional British festival experience without delving into the unbearably pretentious, Blissfields is a weekend for the more discerning. The line-up eschews big-name headliners in favour of an array of established greats and exciting newcomers in a setting that’s welcoming and picturesque. It’s family-friendly, but don’t let that put you off if you’re kidless; the after-hours fun is some of the best you’ll find, plus there’s a ludicrously wonderful spa in which to soak away your hangover. ARCTANGENT ArcTanGent returns, bringing the best in math-, postand alt-rock to the West Country. 2014’s instalment was a triumph, with a line-up to please any fan of obtuse time signatures and intricate riffage. Oh the riffage. This year ArcTanGent is going to be heavy. The bone-splitting combo of Dillinger Escape Plan and Deafheaven will cap off Thursday and Friday nights, before 65 Days Of Static bring the party on Sunday. Then there’s the return of Fall Of Troy, Brontide and a whole raft more to get your mosh on to. VICTORIOUS Victorious festival has grown hugely over the last few years, and this year it represents one of the best value festivals around. There’s no compromise on the lineup though; mixing exciting new music with huge headliners that’d be worth the ticket price alone. Honeyblood and The Wytches get things going, but it’s the Saturday headliner that’s got us falling head over heels, with the mighty Flaming Lips taking to the stage. Brilliantly friendly and so close to the coast, what better way to spend your bank holiday weekend? POSITIVUS A combination of sunny beaches and misty forests make Salacgriva’s Positivus Festival a unique proposition. With a huge line-up, packed full of chart toppers and the biggest alternative acts, there’s a whole bunch of reasons to get to the Latvian coast this summer. Consider their emphasis on emerging talent, art and dance too, and you can understand how this became the largest and most significant music festival in the Baltic States. PLISSKËN Plisskën might not be the first festival that springs to mind when doing that holiday planning, but one glance at the bill should change all that. With no heed paid to genre, and with meticulous attention paid to a line-up that veers from Tony Allen’s Afrobeat genius to Mudhoney’s legendary racket, you can almost feel the energy of the place surging at you. With an admirable stance on environmental issues too, this could easily become your go-to European festival. MEADOWS IN THE MOUNTAINS Idyllic is a pretty easy word to thrown about when writing up festival previews, but c’mon, Meadows In The Mountains just seems to be the epitome of it. Set high above the clouds, in the Bulgarian mountains, this festival has a wonderfully healthy approach to the environment (the bars don’t have disposable glasses), and entertainment (away from the music there’s a mountain zip line and downhill grass bob-sleighing!). Plus, old Russian buses and horse‘n’carts move you from the accommodation to the site. Idyllic, right? ATP ICELAND Just glancing at that image on the right is bringing up so many memories of the incredible time we had in Iceland last year. Set on an old American air base, you feel like you’re a million miles from anywhere and totally free to lose yourself in the incredible music that ATP habitually present us with. Shows take place in a huge aircraft hangar and a more intimate seated venue and with the sun barely setting all day long, you’ll feel like you can party for hours more than normal, and you almost certainly will. OFF Taking place in a truly beautiful location, a green oasis in the heart of industrial Silesia, OFF festival is described as a way of life by its organisers. Alongside exciting headliners, (this year’s include Ride, Patti Smith and Run The Jewels) and a truly imaginative line-up, they take care to showcase some of the best new acts from an increasingly strong Polish scene. Factor in some film, arts, performance and poetry, and it really is an excellent escape from reality for the weekend. SUMMER CAMP Why do you live in London? We both grew up on the outskirts of London but have now been proper Londoners for over ten years. We love its diversity, its romance, its grit. You can be in the traditional glamour and history of Bond Street, then one tube ride later you’re somewhere completely different. Like Mile End. We also love how much Londoners care about their city. We get so furious about changes - often because they’re crap changes like pubs being bulldozed with no planning permission to make room for flats - but sometimes the rage is because someone is opening a cereal cafe and that really pisses people off. We always talk about moving and living somewhere else because our work means we’re not tied to one particular place, but we just couldn’t leave this troubled but beautiful city. Where do you like to eat? Food is so good in London now! We feel like in London the old idea that England has bad food is combatted by a serious obsession with trying cuisine from different cultures and places. We’re killing it when it comes to burgers, so many great curry houses, even Mexican food is slowly taking over. And oh my god, the Italian restaurants are so great now. We love Bocca Di Lupo, we go there as much as our wallets allow. Jeremy is really into burritos so he goes to Daddy Donkey and Chilango. And Franco Manca is still great for pizza. Burgers - Patty & Bun, Meat Market and Honest are all excellent. We also love Patara and Rosa’s for Thai food.
What’s the perfect way to spend the day? We like to just walk and walk and then eat and then walk and then go to the cinema and then walk. The best cities are the ones you can walk around and London ticks that box. We go to the cinema loads, big fans of the BFI, the Picturehouse chain and the Prince Charles Cinema. When they showed Beyond Clueless (the film we soundtracked) at the Prince Charles we got to go to the projection room and it was like that scene in Inglorious Basterds, but without the Nazis. Favourite gig venue? We both love the Scala, to play and to watch bands in. We’ve been going there for years. We have history with that place. Does London influence the music you write? Of course, but not in a direct, "Here’s a song about the time we went to Chilangos" way. We have written all our music here, and we’ve been inspired by the things we’ve seen in the city.
