I dunno if you've noticed, but new music is a big part of what we do. Not only do we spend day-in-day-out listening to it and posting the best stuff we hear on our social networks but, of course, we love to head to London's best venues to check them out in the flesh too. One of the new bands we saw recently, that completely blew us away, was Dublin's own Girl Band. Their rhythmic rock sound that just makes you want to dance has been in our head for months, and that is why they're gracing the cover of our new music issue. There are big things in store for these guys, of that we're sure. This month you'll notice we've got the full stage times listed for London's second ever Visions, a highlight of last year's festival calendar and with an even better line-up this year, we can't wait to all be there, relaxing on rooftops, running round venues and making sure you all know where and when to be. At £25 it's a steal.

TO THE WEDDING

This appeared out of nowhere about a month ago from the Londonbased songwriter. I’ve listened to it every day since and it still floors me. The vocal is just perfect in getting across the emotions that come with the disintegration of a relationship. Lyrically it’s raw and intense. Musically, it’s dark, spacious and the production is absolutely perfect. Fans of London Grammar and Banks will adore it. We certainly do.

The work of multi-instrumentalist Lauren Grubb and the first glimpse of the new album - this is just beautiful, simple songwriting. Part Chris Isaak, part Warpaint, it builds and builds over five minutes of downbeat melancholy. I love the way the guitar parts weave in and out of one another. There must have been the temptation to throw so much more at this, sonically, but the understated nature of it somehow makes it even grander.

IS LOVE ENOUGH?

RIVERS

RIVERS

ALICIA CATLING

I’m a total sucker for three-chord, horizon-spanning Americana and Florida’s Rivers have served up an ace. It’s got one of the best and most effective intros I’ve heard all year and is, in general, just huge amounts of fun. A must for any future road trips.

This is woozy, summery psych-pop from one of our favourite discoveries of the year so far. She’s sixteen, writes and co-produces everything and is just scarily talented. Her brand new EP is great and Plants is the perfect starting point.

BLISTERING SUMMER

TENTERHOOK CHEMICALS

Tenterhook is nineteen-year-old Londoner Archie Faulks and his two songs to date showcase something really special. We interviewed him for our Unsigned Band of the Month feature recently and, trust us, he’s got big plans. Chemicals is arena-ready, emotive pop-rock. We’ll hear much more from him.

NEW SOUNDS ---------DEERS BY GEMMA SAMWAYS

Juggling day jobs and debt; suffering homesickness and self-doubt; racking up more time in travel taverns than Alan Partridge and Lenny Henry combined: let’s just say that being in a band doesn’t come without its drawbacks. But – and it’s a big but – if you’re of a free-spirited disposition, there are few occupations more fun. Judging by the promo accompanying Bamboo – depicting Ana Garcia Perrotte and Carlotta Cosials cavorting around the sun-drenched streets of Madrid – there’s no band more suited to the profession than Deers. Hell, their enthusiasm is so infectious, it makes you want to jack-in the nine-to-five and join in. Released in June via Lucky Number Music, their double A-sided debut, Demo, was reportedly the product of one Sangria-fuelled recording session. As its title implies, both songs are what you might term “rough and ready”, but it’s precisely

that lo-fi finish that accounts for a large part of their charm. Take Bamboo, for example: with its sloppy guitars, loose-limbed grooves and lethargic vocals, it’s the messier, more mischievous cousin of The Strange Boys’ bratty Be Brave. On the flip side is the equally ramshackle – albeit slightly more psychedelic – Trippy Gum, which sounds something like The Velvets jamming with The Shangri Las. It’ll be interesting to see what the addition of a permanent rhythm section does for Deers’ sound and, subsequently, their success. Whatever the four-piece’s future, you know they’ll be relishing every second of the ride. LISTEN TO: BAMBOO ONLINE: @deersband // facebook.com/deers LIVE: Corsica Studios, September 2nd 11

TA L E S F R O M T H E C I T Y. . . London is an exciting place for us to visit and perform. It has the energy and diversity that we are used to in New York, but with a much deeper history. The architecture and traditions are grand and romantic - but the city is also so modern and fashion forward. We love contrast and London certainly delivers. Our first time in London was so special for many reasons. We had released our record in the states and were anxiously awaiting the UK arrival. The album artwork was centred around a bold piece by Belgian pop artist Evelyn Axell and, just as magic happens, her Ice-Cream piece was showing at the Barbican. We did our normal press and radio duties and then rushed over, in full getups, to see the piece in person. It was a powerful moment seeing her piece right amidst the Warhol paintings. If Axell was alive today, we know she would have been proud. Thus far that same energy from our first trip to the UK has carried over into our audiences and we are very excited to see how that translates into the festival circuit this summer!

A handful of words stand out when talking to Harry Burgess, the protagonist and frontman of rising Leeds quartet Adult Jazz. His use of words like ‘care’, ‘thought’ and ‘inclusiveness’ contradict - at least on the face of it - a debut album that is crafted in a way that challenges as much as it yearns to be adored. Of course, any premise of being challenging isn’t in Burgess’ world view. Put to him that Adult Jazz’s music thrives on its own intelligence and a reply comes that belies his young years. “It’s a funny term that [intelligent music]. It suggests there’s an extra thing involved, whereas I think it should be entailed in writing music that there’s a level of thought and care. We don’t want our music to smack of academia. I enjoy the conceptual side of it but it shouldn’t require that to illuminate it. I’m happy to be taken without that as well. Some music I really admire is a little bit nerdy and in that world, but I think one of the worst things someone can do is point the pretentiousness card at a band. The whole thing is a pretence, to make music. It’s an act of pretending. And so often when people use that they just mean it’s taking itself seriously, but all good stuff should.” Certainly there’s no fear in the seriousness of what Burgess talks about. Adult Jazz, in all of its elements, is a form Burgess and his bandmates Tom Howe, Steven Wells and Tim Slater - have been developing for longer than you may think for such a seemingly new band. Based and grown in Leeds, their work has been formed over a four-year period that saw the scrapping and fruition of a massive amount of ideas. “I’ve always been like “I can’t wait for people to hear it” but we were quite strict on when it was ready. Lots of people said two years ago “Why don’t you just release it? All the songs are written”. But it’s important that us, as individuals in the band, all align when we’re enjoying it. It takes longer than you think for four people to all match up and decide “Hey, we’re all really into this now.” We wanted to make sure we could finish it with that stamp of enjoyment.” That stamp of enjoyment is plain to see in Gist Is. Singles such as the sprawling, haunting Spook

and kinetic Idiot Mantra display a band indulging in a thrilling adventurousness not heard in a British act since the underground heyday of the underappreciated Youthmovies or The Edmund Fitzgerald. Of course, such is the excitement around the band and the album’s release that successes from grander names have already been mentioned - and rightfully so. But Adult Jazz’s is music that demands a credibility of itself. “I think credibility is more important than commercial success,” he says emphatically. “We’ve been discussing radio edits and things like that recently and

grappling with those ideas. But the most powerful credibility is when people have been able to synthesise a friendliness, an inclusiveness and a real craftsmanship. That’s the best kind of credibility. You can be a noise or drone artist but it isn’t the most inclusive music, so I think there’s a limit to how many people can call you credible. When people are celebrated like Björk is, it’s because she’s written such carefully crafted music that is unsettling and lovely and soft and delightful all at the same time.”

There’s an ambitiousness to Burgess that is as charming as it is intimidating. Delving into his work further, asking him about his own personality and struggles within the record’s meaning, it’s clear that Gist Is is a culmination of thoughts and processes he himself is reflecting on as challenging. Yet it deals with concepts with an affable vaguery. “There are a lot of times in the songs where I’ll sing something inarticulate and we’ll try to find words that fit it, but it would never work. There’s a lot of singing

“W e d on’t want our mu s ic to sm ack of acad em ia”

phonetics - there’s a bit in Am Gone where I sing a very childish, playground phonetic blah blah blah style so a lot of it is this idea of how losing that form and transcription can enhance meaning. The conceptual reflection of that is religious and ideological truths and morality - how maybe we should look at cultivating that twinge, that internal twinge, the gist of whether something’s good or whether something’s helpful or healthy, instead of looking at every single possible permutation of what’s right. You can’t write down every possibility on earth so we need to cultivate an intuitive understanding of those things. The titles relate to the themes of what’s going on through all of it, so if that’s a “concept

album”, then I guess it is that. But they’re more like personal, individual stories that share a common theme about trying to determine transcribed meaning versus intuition. That’s the idea of the gist. It’s based in a pretty emotional sense.” He speaks emotionally, for sure. But Burgess’ confidence shines through decisively. For Adult Jazz, in all of its conceptual, musical and existential permutations, is a journey that is far from complete. It’s one that will be a thrilling, moving and thoughtful one to follow.

her avant-garde R&B, the Cheltenham-born talent nurtured a growing number of fans by adopting a provocative approach to lyrics and imagery: brash, sexuality appears amid both subtle and blatant intensity. Almost exactly a year on, LP1 is set for its (wonderfully suitable) Young Turks release, and the trend-setting label have delivered on the hype-promise. Although the record does not push the boundaries with quite the same panache as what has come before, the ten tracks still encompass everything that makes FKA twigs so exciting. Sparse, dark, broken-up FKA TWIGS production allows space for twigs’ seductive and somehow scarily innocent, FX-laden soprano: LP1 eerie opener Preface and the beautiful Closer Young Turks // August 11th feel almost choral in their vocal delivery; stand-out album closer Kicks is a typically sultry FKA twigs - real name Tahliah Barnett - is an enigma, but an outing complete with particularly out-there manipulation, while the scatty techno-esque enigma with a difference; Numbers adds another dimension to where so many buzzy, proceedings. SPOON // THEY WANT MY SOUL

ANTI // August 4th The title track for Spoon’s first album in four years was inspired by a bully who used to beat up Britt Daniel in school. That guy needs to be thanked. Wait, that sounds wrong. But if he inspired They Want My Soul at least positives came from it. For this is Spoon at the peak of their powers. It’s the first time the band has worked with outside producers and it seems to have brought a freshness to the tracks. You get the irresistible garage rock stomps and breezy summer numbers but there’s also added electro, like on the gleaming closer New York Kiss. And Britt and the bully? Well, he later became a big Spoon fan. Of course he did. Danny Wright

CYMBALS EAT GUITARS LOSE

Tough Love // August 25th ‘Slow-burning’ is as recurrently used with a tone of dismissal as it is a synonym of praise. It's also the most commonly-uttered description of Cymbals Eat Guitars' music, for better and worse. At once visceral and immediate, yet shrouded in layers of clouding distortion, a chief criticism of the New York band's first two albums, however great, was a slight sense of indistinguishability and repetition. Now, LOSE offers a perfect opportunity for both growth and experimentation, which the band step up to with marked urgency. Opening track Jackson sees the group at their most triumphant and emphatic, while XR and Child Bride show sides not previously witnessed. This isn't just ‘Album of the Year’ material, but a rare sort of epic-sized record that comes along and seems to echo your entire being. Luke Morgan Britton

ROYAL BLOOD ROYAL BLOOD

Warner Bros // August 24th Two years ago Royal Blood didn’t exist. Now, there’s little you can do to stop them, as the hyped-up duo from Brighton continue to woo festival-goers with their riff-heavy rock pulsations. The pummelling bass line to Out of the Black launches into radio played familiar territory, before jolting into feisty forerunner Come On Over. Yet the dynamic twosome have some surprises for us yet, with You Can Be So Cruel twisting splendidly into a Queens Of The Stone Age-style burst of bone tingling power. And there’s plenty more where that came from, with Loose Change and Ten Tonne Skeleton snaking into even dirtier and denser rhythmic sections. Royal Blood’s self-titled debut is a slick and explosive creation, plus a sure-fire contender for album of the year. Amy Gravelle

SUMMER CAMP // BEYOND CLUELESS Moshi Moshi // August 4th

With their sophomore LP only released at the tail end of last year, it's a pleasant surprise to have Elizabeth and Jeremy back so quickly. Their treat for us is the soundtrack to the teen-movie documentary Beyond Clueless, which premiered at SXSW earlier this year. The album is, unsurprisingly, a mainly instrumental piece, with the occasional snippet of dialogue inserted, and for the most part is incredibly un-Summer Camp. There's still their familiar brand of pop present in the form of House Party, Losing It and Beyond Clueless, but the duo also adapt to their soundtrack duty with enviable ease. Long live Summer Camp. Jack McKenna

ELECTRIC WÜRMS MUSIK, DIE SCHWER ZU TWERK

JJ V

Secretly Canadian // August 18th In a year of comparatively jolly releases from Scandinavian contemporaries like CEO and Highasakite, cult-fave Swedish duo jj have returned with the dour flipside. While the plaintive, expletive-laden Hold Me has a beautiful bleakness to it, more representative of their third album is centrepiece Full, which just sounds like one big sigh of resignation (“Oh god, I’m so alone”, Elin Kastlander even exhales). On the whole it’s an immersive but pretty damn trying listen, one that seems less interested in offering solutions for the downtrodden than it is in dragging them down with it. With V, jj have made an album for the broken-hearted, but not the faint of heart. Thomas Hannan

Bella Union // August 18th Providing a welcome escape from all the palaver surrounding The Flaming Lips, we find Wayne Coyne and Steven Drozd (plus four members of Linear Downfall) disguised as Electric Würms and further indulging their pursuit of the acid-casualty free-jazz/prog experimentalism seen on the disappointingly flaccid The Terrors. Whilst that record prompted more yawns than screams, Musik, Die Schwer Zu Twerk is a heap more immersive and rewarding; and whilst it might not replace The Soft Bulletin in your heart, it’s thrilling to hear the freaks sounding more fearless again. It’s blindingly obvious that Drozd is having an absolute ball here, and the disarmingly (almost) lovely Heart Of The Sunrise sees Coyne at his hypnotic, entrancing best. Hopefully proving as cathartic for the pair as it sounds, this frisky outlet for their inner-prog demons might even just allow The Flaming Lips to get back to those giant sad pop explosions that made us love them so much. Dave Rowlinson

TY SEGALL MANIPULATOR

Drag City // August 25th For somebody who spits out records with relentless, consummate ease, Ty Segall could be forgiven for aimlessly churning out a dud every so often, yet Manipulator continues his frenzied upward trajectory with a little more focus. His thirst for unruly guitar solos remains intact: recent single Feel, and Susie Thumb writhe with angst. However, his recent endeavours alongside Fuzz, coupled with acoustic dabbling, have him doffing his cap in the direction of familiar touchstones like Black Sabbath and The Who, as well as owing gentler moments to The Kinks. While another album has inevitably been recorded in the time that you have taken to read this, this is Segall’s most exhilarating offering in some time. Lee Wakefield

TRANS AM VOLUME X

Thrill Jockey // August 11th Ouch. There are so many good grooves and ideas crammed into the Washington DC band’s return to form that it’s almost painful. Their dizzying mix of raw krautrock, technical metal and pulsing electronica has never sounded better, with every facet of their impressive soundworld represented. But with so much going on, it forces the songs into some one-dimensional corners. Why, when Phil Manley is absolutely shredding his guitar a la Metallica’s Kirk Hammett did they cut short the blazing Backlash? Or why, just as Failure gets its throbbing bassline nestled into the back of your skull, does it fade out? The problem here is that at a criminally-short 38 minutes the songs need more time to explore their potential. Geoff Cowart

J MASCIS TIED TO A STAR

Subpop // August 25th When Dinosaur Jr. returned in 2007 with Beyond, their first record in ten years and the first with the original line-up since the 1988 classic Bug, it was the beginning of a renaissance for the band and its frontman J Mascis. With another two Dinosaur Jr. LPs and his 2011 debut solo album Several Shades of Why released since the reunion, Mascis is undoubtedly in the finest form since his early twenties. Tied to a Star is a direct successor to Several Shades of Why; (mostly) acoustic rock focused around Mascis’ unmistakeable vocals and delicate guitar lines. Another gem of an album, further proving why J Mascis is one of his generation’s greatest. Johan Alm

MERCHANDISE AFTER THE END

4AD // August 25th As the latest long-toiling band to be taken under 4AD’s wing, Carson Cox and co must be secretly hoping for some of that Future Islands magic to rub off on them. Even if not, After The End certainly feels ambitious, finding the Floridians taking on two more members, hiring Depeche Mode’s mixing engineer, and recasting themselves as “a pop band” pedalling “a twisted reality”. Gone is the ferocity of roughshod recordings like Roser Park, and in its place is hook-heavy alt-rock, that ranges from the gambolling, guitar-led Little Killer to the stately, piano-driven title track. They’ve got the tunes, they’ve got the louche croon, now all they need is a spot on Letterman... Gemma Samways

GIRL BAND words: danny wright photography: sebastian nevols

“We’ve had so many odd comparisons thrown at us – we’ve had post-goth, then guitar techno and even pop-punk,” says Alan Duggan, guitarist in the defiantly incomparable Girl Band, the most exciting group these ears have heard in a long time...

He’s not wrong. The Dublin four piece (no, there are no girls in the band, before you ask) have received a bewildering and eclectic number of comparisons in their relatively short existence: Pavement, The Jesus Lizard, Nirvana, McClusky and LCD Soundsystem to name just a few. “Sometimes we get comparisons and we’re like ‘We’re definitely not like that’. It’s easier to know what you don’t sound like I think,” bassist Dan Fox notes. If the comparisons are a source of frustration for the band, this journalistic grasping can be explained by the fact that Girl Band genuinely create a sound that is near impossible to describe. I will bravely try though: it’s a brutal and brilliant cocktail of loops and grinding guitars over krautrock rhythms that shift through textures and tempos. It’s visceral stuff. And it’s the shapeshifting synthesis of styles that makes them so mesmerising. They are neither rock nor electronic but a wonderful melding of the two. “There’s a lot of things that go into it; it’s never just this influence or that influence,” says Alan. “And a lot of the new songs are more groove oriented. We’ve tried to expand the sound.” Just take the single Lawman, released at the start of this year, a distorted, kinetic behemoth that seethes and builds with a twitching energy before exploding into life. It also marked the start of what’s been a great year for the band. They’ve since released the 25-second single The Cha Cha Cha, played exhilarating shows around the world and, in September, release new single De Bom Bom. “It’s going great. We’ve had a really good run at it this year. We’ve played in a lot of new places and it’s been a lot of fun. Before we were working away and things were progressing but it’s definitely picked up this year,” admits Alan. They released the France 98 EP last year and an album is now in the works but the band are in no rush: “We’re working away on it. It will come eventually,” says Dan. “We’re happy with the pace we’re doing things at. We want to do the best that we can: there’s no harm in taking your time over it,” agrees Alan. One of the highlights of the year so far was playing to a large crowd at Primavera in Barcelona. Though it nearly never happened. “We had to do what was supposed to be a three day drive in one day. We drove sixteen hours straight and we thought there wouldn’t be anybody there to watch us. We thought we’d be playing to about fourteen people so it was a nice surprise,” says Alan. Has playing these bigger live shows and seeing what works for those crowds informed the newer stuff they’ve written? “Not really,” says Alan. “When we first started writing and recording we always tried to write in a way that we could always replicate live. Although playing more live shows has definitely made us more aware of what you can actually physically do on stage.” That certainly makes sense. Live they are a force of nature. When we caught the

“It’s easier to know what you don’t sound like, I think” band at their Shacklewell Arms show a few months ago, Alan spent most of the gig crouched over his pedal board, fashioning an array of bracing noises from the amps.

the songs themselves. “We’ve all got our ideas on how we want it to sound and everyone has their opinion so we all get to have a say.”

How do they fuse all these sounds and influences together - from 25-second hardcore tracks to seven minute long seething soundscapes? “It all just kind of happens on the spot most of the time. It can just come from a noise sometimes and then we all come together and make it into something,” explains Dan. “We’re all into lots of the same thing but our influences come from all over the place.”

They seem a band very much in control of their destiny, with a clear idea of what to do next. And they’re not afraid to throw in the odd curveball. I ask if releasing a 25-second single - each housed in a wooden box built by drummer Adam Faulkner and each hand stamped and numbered - was a way to mess with people’s expectations. “It wasn’t a statement or anything – we did it for Record Store Day and we all just really like the song,” explains Alan.

And knowing how they want to sound means they also produce and engineer all

The Cha Cha Cha is, according to lead singer Dara Kiely, inspired by Sam Cooke's suave R&B classic Everybody Loves To Cha Cha Cha. It’s not the only lyrics of Dara’s which jump out at you. At the Shacklewell Arms show, as he constantly pulls at his striped t-shirt, you catch lyrics over the brutal blare. But you’re not sure if you’ve heard them correctly – “I look crap with my top off” comes at one point; he seems to scream “NUTELLA”. Dara laughs: “Myself and Dan were having a chat after a night out and we were eating Nutella and we saw there was a Nutella hotline and he was like ‘Nutella saved my life’ so I started singing ‘Nuuuteellla.’” There’s another line where he sings ‘I’m so surprised it feels just like my favourite player has gone and joined United’. “I’m a Liverpool fan and when Michael Owen signed for United I lost faith in my life for a while. I was 14 as well; it’s a bit late to have that much attachment to a player!”

It was a similar way that the band got their name. A story they’ve already had to tell a thousand times. After meeting "an annoying girl" in a bar one night who liked the Wombats, Dara and Alan suggested Girl Band as a name which she said was a ‘disgusting’ idea. Obviously they decided to keep it. As the interview finishes, I ask if they’d still call themselves Girl Band if they started again. The band laugh: they’ve admitted before they’re terrible at naming things. “I don’t know actually,” says Dan. “It’s a very good question.” There’s a pause. “I actually don’t know. I think things could have been a lot easier,” ponders Dara. He shouldn’t worry. Girl Band don’t need to change a thing: 2014 is shaping up to be their year. Girl Band play Raw Power Festival August 31st and Shapes October 16th. New single, De Bom Bom, is released via Any Other City, September 1st

JACK WHITE

Eventim Apollo // July 3rd My old man used to talk about Bowie. In ’73 or ’76 or whatever year it was. He’d talk about people crying and fainting; people with jaws on the floor. I’d listen, in great reverie; enraptured, but unable to understand completely. When Jack White comes whirling on to the stage, I have that moment: It’s a visceral, dizzying

set played with a refreshing sense of abandon; filled to near breaking point with a heady concoction of genres. Flitting from rootsy country to fuzz charged blues funk. In the hands of most artists, it could turn into a stodgy mess. But we’re dealing with a truly unique musician. Jack White is the only contemporary artist who could blend all of that together and turn it into the most thrilling rock’n’roll show in the world. Lee Moroney

BY PERFECT PUSSY’S MEREDITH GRAVES To an outsider, our story must seem more like a fairy tale, or at least a working script for a hokey indie film: Band of nobodies from the middle of nowhere record four songs, play three shows in six months, somehow becomes popular overnight thanks to the internet, wild ride ensues. To that end, we’ve been accused of being everything from sell-outs to poseurs to an Illuminati construct created by, who else, the music industry. I’ve found now that those outside of it have little concept of how the music industry, like any other industry, is stratified and heavily reliant on division of labor. Our weird little life was brought into existence by WRITERS - people who have dedicated their lives to music, who make a living sharing their genuine opinions, who actually get better reception when they say awful, negative things. In this instance, we were just a bunch of sensitive nerds making crazy music that was appreciated by other sensitive nerds. The fact that people liked us enough to take a chance on us is simply good luck. When it all started, people loved to bring us down by calling us a ‘hype band’ - which isn’t something to be ashamed of anyway - but now it’s been nearly a year, we’ve played hundreds of shows, and are about to travel to other continents, all on roughly 28 total minutes of recorded music. People still hate us like it’s their job, and the longer it goes on, the less threatening it’s become to me. After a while, you realize that ‘you’re not punk’ is code for ‘something you do has threatened my self-concept,’ or worse, ‘I find it troubling that a strange and noisy band fronted by a woman has achieved mainstream success and recognition.’ If a loud, violent band made up of all dudes had the same story as us, they would just be a shitty band, but because of the inclusion of a marginalized person, we’re not only shitty, but a gimmick. I look forward to a future where women aren’t so dramatically underrepresented in loud genres that it results in this sort of constant mistrust and belittling. Hate the music industry all you want, but if they made room for a person like me, that means people like me can come in and make room for many others, which should be our end-goal and focus as we fight for better representation in all forms of media.
