ROCK N’ BOWL

Mady’s Angels will be

holding it’s 5th annual Mady’s Rock N’ Bowl on December 11th, 2016 from 5:00 to 9:00 pm at Skylanes Bowling Center. The funds raised from this event, along with donations from Skylanes and the Farda Family Foundation, will be used to purchase gift cards for local families in need. Last year, Mady’s Angels donated $5000. New toys are also welcomed as donations. The Maybabies and the SC Project will be performing and Santa and Mrs. Claus will make a visit. Along with lane fees, there is a $5 door charge. Prizes will be awarded every half hour to bowlers. Mady’s Angels merchandise will also be on sale.

10 Local Flair | December/January 2016

In 2010, Mady’s Angels was formed to “pay it forward,” in memory of Madyson Law, after her untimely passing. Mady’s Angels holds four events a year to raise funds which help families in the community. On April 17th, they will hold Mady’s Character Brunch at the Reformed Church of Bushkill. May 7th is their golf tournament at Country Club of the Poconos, and August 6th is Mady’s Snow Day at Barley Creek Park in Tannersville. Since it’s inception, Mady’s Angels donated more than $150,000 and has directly helped 154 families, and 51 organizations and causes that Mady believed in.

Mady’s Angels supports families with grief support and bereavement services. Families who have experienced fires, financial hardships and are in need of medical assistance are also recipients of donations. Research, animal welfare, and student scholarships are also on the organizations’ charitable giving list. Mady’s Kitchen was formed at St. John’s Catholic Church, and the free community dinner feeds roughly 150 people a month. For more information, visit MadysAngels.org

Nestled in the quiet village butters, and creamy cocoa are of Thornhurst, and off a beaten path, the Briar Patch at Thornhurst Nurseries is more than just your average Christmas tree farm. This warm and rustic gift store is full of holiday spirit. Owner, Kathy Rector, says she knew she had to make the shop “different and unique - a destination worth the trip,” when she first opened in September 1996. Twenty years later, the Briar Patch, which was “born from the love of Christmas spirit and dedicated to the child in all of us,” has customers year after year. A hand- carved, Old World Santa greets visitors at the door as they walk into the store and instantly feel the Christmas spirit. Filled with primitive and Christmas folk art, pottery, ornaments galore, quilted blankets, framed holiday prints, fragrant balsam pillows and cuddly stuffed animals - there is truly something inside for everyone. Delectable features including bread mixes, fruit

also offered. “Customers keep coming back for our, private label soy/beeswax candles,” says Rector, we can’t keep them in stock!” The fun continues outdoors to the 15-acre tree farm. Seven varieties of trees including White, Norwegian, Colorado and Blue Spruce Trees are grown on the premises. In addition to trees, the farm offers all-natural, handmade Princess Pine and Incense Cedar garlands. Wreaths made of Blue Spruce and Fir greens, with touches of cedar and Oregonia, decorated with bows are also available. To keep visitors warm while they search for the perfect tree, homemade apple cider is served in the barn.

The Briar Patch is located on 278 Pine Grove Road, Thornhurst, PA. They are open daily November 25 through December 24 from 12p.m.5p.m. and 10a.m.- 5p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

The Briar Patch at Thornhurst Nurseries hopes visitors feel at home and leave feeling joyful. Rector says, “the compliments from customers make it worthwhile”.

There is a new salon in

Stroudsburg, but don’t call with the expectation of booking a cut or color at The Keratin Lounge PA. The luxury salon achieves its’ philosophy of; “healthy hair first, style second,” through their one and only service—keratin treatments. Founder, Nadine Ramos, started on her path to entrepreneurship more than ten years ago, when she discovered the then little known substance— keratin. Ramos challenged herself to create a salon-ready product using the ingredient, which would comply with US beauty regulations. Once she had the formula, The Brazilian Keratin Straightening Company was born with one goal in mind; to have salons all over the world using her product and to help women everywhere experience fabulous hair. Ramos started the business as a mobile beauty service featuring her original Brazilian Straightening Treatment. The overwhelming success of the product provided Ramos the financial resources to open the company’s flagship salon, Keratin Lounge NYC, located in New York’s Midtown Manhattan. Fast forward a decade; over 50,000 salons now carry the LASIO® Keratin Treatments and Ramos sits comfortably at the helm of the growing business, in her

new headquarters in Downtown Stroudsburg. When I asked, why Stroudsburg? Ramos replied, “I love it here! I see great potential in Stroudsburg and the response to the salon has been better than we could have imagined. I knew the area was ready for luxury services.” Adding Mother to her job title two years ago, Ramos and her husband knew they wanted their son, Oliver, to have a yard growing up. She explained, “we started driving west, we looked in New Jersey and then we just kept going! We were amazed by how much more we could get for our money in Stroudsburg.” Ramos still has to travel into NYC occasionally, but the bulk of her business is conducted from their new offices at 9 South 7th Street. With over 25 employees and expansion into Miami, Chicago and LA in her sights, Ramos is an inspirational force to be reckoned with. She shared, “the biggest challenges I faced when starting were not having business experience or financial backing. I really found help through the SBA’s which enabled me expand manufacturing. There is help out there— you just have to ask for it.” Like a lot of women, Ramos says it is difficult to balance work and motherhood, but she loves the serenity Stroudsburg offers at the end of a long day.

What can you expect at the Keratin Lounge?

Lasio means “silky smooth” in Spanish, so expect your hair to feel luxurious after the treatment. Keratin is a natural ingredient found in our hair and nails. The environment, along with chemicals and metals in water, strip the keratin proteins from the hair. Lasio products replace them safely and naturally. The entire product line is water-based and effectively brings dry, damaged and unmanageable hair back to health. Expect your appointment to last 1 ½ - 2 hours while you are pampered in the modern and upscale salon. Expect the treatment to last about 4 months. You will leave with tips and tricks to help your hair stay healthy using ingredients you can find in your home. The treatments can be started as young as 13 years and should continue through your 70’s and it is suggested for all hair types.

Give Poverty the Boot Thru the Arts

Pocono Alliance held its 4th Annual Give Poverty the Boot Thru the Arts Event in September at Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort. Participants enjoyed an evening of art demonstrations, live music, amazing artwork and every ticket holder went home with a piece of art at the end of the evening. The event raised more than $7,000 for the Bridges Out of Poverty Program which is a transformative program that engages, educates and empowers people in poverty to develop their own plans to move from their current situation to a more stable future for themselves and their families.

MARKETreport

by BOB KELLY KELLY REALTY GROUP KELLER WILLIAMS REAL ESTATE

I write this issue’s Monroe County Housing Market Report while flying to Orlando for the 2016 National Association of Realtors Conference. It is our annual conference and is attended by 30,000 Realtors. It is a challenge to dedicate five days away from the office but, I attend every year as education is the key to keeping up with industry trends, technology and changes. As I review the housing numbers for the first ten months of 2016, it is important to note our residential housing market in Monroe County is moving in a positive direction. The move can be attributed to economic development. Medical continues to boom in the area as the new St. Luke’s Medical Center in Bartonsville opened in October, with a new medical building currently under construction in front of the hospital. Additionally, the new Pocono Medical Center building on route 447 is nearing completion. On the retail side, the Smithfield Village shopping center breaks ground in April of 2017 and the Lidl grocery chain (which is one of the largest in Europe and making their way into the US), has picked Stroudsburg to build a new store on Route 611 close to the Stroud Mall. In tourism, phase II of Kalahari Water Park is set to open in the Spring adding another 450 hotel rooms and making it the largest indoor water park in the U.S. The resort development is obviously

driving the entertainment industry in Monroe County as many wineries have opened in the past year and are experiencing tremendous success. Two new retail wine bars will be open around the time of this publication on Main Street in Stroudsburg, as well as a Cider Bar in Stroudsburg’s Courthouse Square. On analyzing the housing numbers, in Monroe County I see tempered, but all positive signs. After eight straight years of declining numbers, Monroe County’s housing market is back on the rise. The economic developments noted above combined with record low interest rates are driving home sales well into the fall and winter, a time which activity typically slows. Foreclosure sales are dropping for the first time in years and there are currently 26% less homes on the market for sale than a year ago. Providing this low inventory continues, it will drive home prices up even further, as a product of supply and demand. During 2016, Monroe County became a hot place to purchase a home again as 2,700 homes were sold which is an increase of 12.9% over 2015. Total dollar volume for the period is up $47MM or 15.8% compared to 2015. Currently, the average home sale price for the county has risen 2.5% versus the same period last year and now sits at $127,364 up from $124,214, in 2015. Finally, the average days on market for the first ten months as

50 Local Flair | December/January 2016

compared to last year decreased. In this year’s period it took 113 days to sell a home versus 118 last year, a decrease of 4.8%. However slight these changes, they are all good signs for our market. As we continue to move forward signs are pointing to a continued recovery in Monroe County. Our economic climate and declining foreclosure inventory will continue to help fuel this. Of course, there are a couple of wildcards out there. We will have to wait and see what the presidential election will have in store for the housing market and of most importance, where interest rates move in 2017. In the end, we are doing our part in the county and have to wait and see what impact national economics play in our recovery for 2017. Happy Holidays to all and I’m looking forward to providing more good news in the new year!

A: Stroudsburg Q: What type of business do you own? A: I own a record store called The Main Street Jukebox. I sell new and used records, turntables, CDs, DVDs, books as well as toys and collectibles. Q: Favorite LOCAL restaurant? A: There are so many great places to eat here in the Poconos but, I have to say my favorite is the Morning Cure. They have one location in Delaware Water Gap and a brand new spot on Main Street in Stroudsburg. They have awesome food and atmosphere, and are really great people. Q: Favorite LOCAL band? A: Another tough question. I have so many friends that are amazing musicians and who play in great bands. A stand out right now, is a local metal band called King Dead. They just released their debut record which I sell at the shop. They’re good friends and talented musicians. Q: If you have never been to (BLANK) you need to get there. Why? A: Main Street Stroudsburg. Main Street has so many things to offer. We have so may cool shops, restaurants, coffee houses, and bars as well as a top notch theater where national touring bands play. We also have a fantastic art culture and just great people in general. Main Streets across America deserve a spot in our future. It is the life blood of community. It is something we need to hold high and preserve for generations to come. Q: Where do you like to explore? A: Travel and exploration are some of my passions besides music I love to research and find album cover and movie locations as well as pop culture and historical spots. I am part of a group called the Delta Bravo Urban Exploration Team which is dedicated to finding all the stuff I just mentioned.

“We highly recommend Bob Kelly if you are looking to sell or purchase a home. We hired Bob to sell our home mid-January 2016 after being on the market with another Realtor for 9 months. To our amazement, he sold our home in 6 weeks! Bob is professional, honest and a very hard worker. His marketing techniques just blew us away. So listen everyone – if you are looking to sell or looking to buy a home, call the ‘Best’ in the area. His name is ‘Bob Kelly.’ He has made our dream come true and he can make yours too.” -Former Client “I have worked with many realtors in many regions, and Bob is among the very best and the most impressive that I know when he listed and sold our house recently. He provided valuable advice on renovations & upgrades that buyers would be looking for. Bob has a low key and relaxed manner, but do not let that fool you. He is probably one of the hardest working realtors out there. Finally, Bob is very detailed oriented, always very patient, and (without saying) very knowledgeable. You will be in good hands when you hire Bob.” -Former Client
