Social Supernova cover story 32 “It’s so much more about being relatable and real, engaging with your community and showing vulnerability now. It’s definitely done a 180 since I started, [but] in the best way possible.” —Rocky Barnes

Rocky Barnes Talks All Things Social Media, Her Clothing Line and Life With Two Boys WRITTEN BY: TAYLOR GORSKI PHOTOGRAPHED BY: MATT COOPER Rocky Barnes Model,EntrepreneurInfluencer, @rocky_barnes 33

“It’s become more and more of a beast, to say the least.” —Rocky Barnes 34

Prior to the world of social media, fashion, creativity and modeling all played big roles in Barnes’ life. “I got scouted right after college,” Barnes recalls. “I was hustling, then working four jobs—two restaurant jobs, marketing part-time (which is what I went to college for) and then modeling part-time as well, driving back and forth from San Diego to LA.”

P 35

And evolved, it has. The Instagram app, which might be unrecognizable from when it first launched, has become much more than users posting a pretty photo. “It’s become more and more of a beast, to say the least. At first, it was like one photo here or there. Now people want multiple photos, videos and stories,” Barnes says. Barnes has worked with a variety of incredible brands over the years like Revolve, American Express, Veuve Clicquot and Express.

Aside from being strikingly beautiful, her effortless style—California cool meets eclectic boho—mixed with the dreamiest of locations, high-quality images and all-around authenticity is all part of the secret sauce that keeps her followers coming back for more.

Once Instagram arrived 12 years ago, the career of the “influencer” was born shortly after. And if you were creative, smart and consistent enough back in those early days of social media, it might have changed the course of your entire life. For Rocky Barnes, who started blogging and posting on Instagram about 10 years ago, just that happened. With an impressive 2.9 million followers on Instagram and now a growing 2.8 million likes on TikTok, Rocky Barnes is undoubtedly known as one of the original social media influencers.

“It’s so much more about being relatable and real, engaging with your community and showing vulnerability now. It’s definitely done a 180 since I started, [but] in the best way possible. I think it’s really evolved with who I am as a person,” explains Barnes. Curating the most perfect image is not as important on social media as it once was. Followers and fans are searching for that vulnerability and genuineness, and Barnes explains how refreshing that is, especially since becoming a mom. “Now that I’m a mom—not just a mom but a mom of two, which let me tell you is a complete game changer from one—we’re still just figuring it all out at the moment,” she laughs. “I know moms are always trying to be perfect and hold everything together for their families, but being able to have an opportunity to connect with other moms and share our grievances is nice. It’s nice that social media has allowed that to be a safe place among other things.”

Barnes found her modeling niche within the swimsuit/lifestyle fitness world. She explains that while the modeling world is so different today, when she started 15 years ago, the modeling agencies wanted “all of the girls to be tall, thin and lightskinned—white, essentially.” “I was shorter, curvier (for modeling, per se), and I’m half Filipino, so I was always tan. I always liked different photos than the agencies did, so I started using Instagram as my personal portfolio,” Barnes explains. While the photos the agencies would choose were over-exposed and airbrushed, Barnes gravitated towards the more original and natural images of herself. “Modeling is creative for every other person on the team, except for the model,” Barnes says. This frustration led her to leverage her Instagram account as both a modeling portfolio and a creative outlet. Already traveling around the world for photoshoots wearing clothes she loved, Barnes began to snap images of her outfits in tropical locations and post them. “It kind of just turned into what it is today; it’s evolved over the past 10 years, but it’s what kind of gave me my initial start,” she humbly admits.

» “In New York, the fun spots are Lola Taverna and American Bar—they have the best chicken peanut salad. For sushi, we always go to Domodomo and Shuko for a special occasion. And there’s obviously great Italian food in New York,” she notes.

» Barnes has a black belt in taekwondo, “I have studied martial arts since I was nine, so that’s kind of like my secret weapon.”

“Our n ew favorite restaurant in LA is Horses. It’s down the street from our house. It’s amazing, I would highly recommend it. It has a great scene too; it’s a fun spot to check out!” Barnes says.

↓ 37

While the virality of TikTok has spread more rapidly than Instagram, Barnes was still hesitant to join the platform at all. “I didn’t want to just jump in with anything, having already established myself on Instagram. I wanted to do what felt right for me, and not just start off dancing or doing whatever everyone else was doing,” she explains. Barnes found her sweet spot on TikTok by posting “get ready with me” videos. She now coordinates her TikTok videos with her Instagram images, admitting she’s had a lot of fun on the new platform. “I think social media is constantly evolving, and I think in order to stay with it, you have to always be willing to evolve with it,” she notes. Apart from what you see on social media, Barnes lives her life off the screen with her family—two boys Jones and Charlie and husband Matt. Not only husband and wife, but she and Matt are also business partners; Barnes notes it was a learning experience to merge the two roles. “Learning how to deal with each other on a professional level and also still be loving and come together as husband and wife has definitely been a struggle—it’s not easy to find that rhythm, but when you do and it’s clicking and you’re having a good day, it’s like the best thing ever,” she says.

The family spends their time bi-coastal between Los Angeles and New York. Barnes is a California girl at heart, born and raised in Los Angeles, while Matt is originally from New York. “Our home base is LA, but we keep Matt’s apartment/bachelor pad in New York, so we try to get out there as much as possible,” Barnes says. The duo recently renovated their stunning Los Angeles home, which Barnes notes is one of her biggest accomplishments to date. While the family will certainly be enjoying their home, they also look forward to traveling the world as a family of four. Adding successful entrepreneur to her list of accomplishments, Barnes launched her own clothing line in the middle of the pandemic. The Bright Side is Barnes’ passion project that she’s dreamed of having since she was a young girl.

Undeniably a trendsetter, Barnes has utilized her platform to evolve both in and out of the social media landscape. With a loyal following and fiery passion for creating, Barnes continues to set trends and embrace her many roles as mom, wife, model, designer and social supernova.

W 38

While keeping up with constant content on Instagram, a whole other social media platform emerged that viewers quickly turned towards in 2020: TikTok.

“I know moms are always trying to be perfect and hold everything together for their families, but being able to have an opportunity to connect with other moms and share our grievances is nice.”

Looking at what they have built together, however, the two wouldn’t want it any other way. “We work from home, we work together, we have two kids together now, we have our moments but it’s allowed us to have such an amazing life together— to be able to travel together and create our own schedule,” she says.

—Rocky Barnes

“Growing up, whenever they asked what I wanted to be, it was always a designer,” Barnes gushes. She notes that it’s been a humbling learning experience, having so much more respect for what brands have all gone through, especially with the supply chain issues from these last couple of years. “We’re trying not to rush into things and have everything we want on our time schedule. So, it’s slow-moving but I really love it, and it’s nice to have something outside of the social media space,” Barnes says. With the ever-changing, fast-paced social media world, it’s clear that Barnes continues to grow and progress each step of the way while remaining authentically herself, which certainly solidifies a space for her in the industry. But with her almost decade-old blog and growing clothing line, Barnes has her eyes set on even bigger goals and dreams. “I’ve always said growing up I wanted to be a combination of Rachel Zoe and Martha Stewart—like really taking a fashion brand and the lifestyle space and having a full lifestyle brand would be so fun.”

“I think social media is constantly evolving, and I think in order to stay with it, you have to always be willing to evolve with it.”

He may have amassed a number of nicknames—“the Robin Hood of modern times” and “the Forrest Gump of ecology” to name a couple—but Rob Greenfield sees himself as part of the change he wishes to see in the world.

To accomplish this, Greenfield set his sights on living in a way that’s beneficial to the planet and those around him, and to do that, he would need to radically transform his lifestyle. Over a period of two years, Greenfield set a goal of making at least one positive change a week. “If I made one positive change a week for two years, that’d be over 100 positive changes,” he explains. “I was able to radically and rapidly transform my life.”

Like most transformational stories, Greenfield’s begins with realization. In 2011, he was living what most would consider a typical, consumerist lifestyle. “I was very focused on material possessions and financial wealth,” Greenfield shares. “I actually had a goal of being a millionaire by the time I was 30.” This goal shifted, however, once he began reading books and watching documentaries on the importance of sustainability. “I started to realize that almost everything that I thought was doing good was causing destruction,” Greenfield says. “I realized I was a hypocrite—my actions were not in alignment with my beliefs.”

Rob Greenfield

Waste Not, Want Not H

“What I strive to do is live in a way where my daily actions no longer cause destruction, are no longer part of inequitable and unjust systems and actually improve the world around me.”

The radical transformation didn’t stop there. In order to promote and garner more attention to his cause of environmental health and equity, Greenfield began taking on truly incredible projects. Some of these projects include living off the grid in a tiny house, wearing trash from products he used for 30 days and only eating food that he grew or foraged for a year—and he has plans to keep going and spread the good word.

“What I want to do in my daily existence is to be a radical reminder that there’s another way that’s possible,” Greenfield explains. “It’s not about sacrificing; it’s about releasing what doesn’t serve us and making space for what does.”

After reacquainting herself with her body, it was time to explore her mind and spirit.

Yoga may have been the beginning of her journey, but Mostofi has since branched out into other forms of holistic fitness, including breathwork, sound baths and a unique take on personal training that combines different practices and techniques and focuses on strength and mobility.

Growing up as a competitive dancer, Nikki Mostofi is no stranger to the hard work it takes to sync a body with movement, but after high school, she was looking for a new way to connect with herself. That’s when she found yoga—her first step towards a holistic lifestyle and a fulfilling career.

“My goal is to make sure that my mental body, my energetic body and my physical body are all taken care of evenly and one isn’t highlighted over the other. They’re all intimately connected,” Mostofi says. This is a sentiment she shares with her students and clients as much as with herself. “My goal is to hold space for all of it, for myself, for living a holistic, wellrounded and balanced life.”

Just Breathe » “Essentially, the inhale brings energy into the body and the exhale calms the body,” Mostofi shares. “A simple breathwork technique is a four-count inhale and six-count exhale all through the nose and repeating it until your heart rate starts to slow down.”

“Curiosity led me to breathwork.

“It was everything I didn’t know I needed. I was still able to use my body, but the perspective was different; the approach was different,” Mostofi explains. “Instead of using my skill set for competition, I was using it as a way to get curious, feel my body and strengthen my intuition without having an end goal.”

I was expecting nothing—I had no idea what it offered, what the point was—I just wanted to try it,” Mostofi shares. Within the first 15 minutes of a 45-minute class, Mostofi had a deep, systemic response that led her to shake and burst into tears. From that moment she understood how essential breathwork practice was to her sense of emotional balance. “It’s one thing to know, but it’s another thing to feel,” she explains.

Morning Glory » Mostofi recommends starting the day with some cat-cow stretches, twists and figure fours on your back. “These help release any stagnation from the body and release any tension from our sleeping positions,” she explains.

Ali Riley first discovered her passion for soccer at age four.

Close to Home » Riley never had the chance to play in SoCal and had been waiting for a team to come back here after the Los Angeles Sol folded in 2010. The most meaningful part of playing in LA is that she’s close to her mom and dad (who was her first soccer coach). Unrivaled Support » For Riley, there’s nothing like playing at the Banc of California Stadium. “It’s hard to compare the game experience at the Banc to anything else if I’m really honest…having the support not dwindle at all, that kind of atmosphere is unparalleled in this league.” » “I really try to focus on what I can control. If you’re prepared and doing everything you can when times are hard, you’ll be ready when the tides turn. That’s what’s helped me stay mentally healthy, especially as an athlete, [where] your career can change overnight,” says Riley.

—Ali Riley

As an only child, soccer was an important social outlet growing up. “For the first probably four years, I tried to schedule playdates at soccer,” says Riley. “I tried so many different sports, but the team aspect is really what drew me in.”

As team captain of Angel City FC of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), she’s even more motivated to enact change in her hometown and loves being surrounded by teammates, founders and staff that also want to drive social impact and connect meaningfully with communities. “This is a team that has a brand, vision and a goal that is so important and goes beyond soccer…” remarks Riley. “We have so much representation [at Angel City], which can inspire so many young girls not necessarily to play soccer, but to follow their dreams [since] that’s what we are all doing.”

ALI LEADERSHIPANDOFIMPORTANCECLUB,FOOTBALLANGELDEFENDERCAPTAINTEAMRILEY,ANDOFCITYONTHEIMPACT

Riley is motivated to discuss topics important to her, such as female empowerment, her experiences during the pandemic as an Asian American woman and addressing gender equity in sports. “I’m seeing the impact I can make using my platform, and that has been built through soccer. I still love game day…but I also realize I can do a lot more than [play],” describes Riley. “I really want to continue to use my voice to make positive change, share stories and hopefully open people’s eyes to new perspectives [and] encourage more equality and kindness.”

Team, community and family have been significant parts of the LA native’s career. Since going pro in 2010, Riley’s journey has led her to play for football clubs across the world and also represent New Zealand in World Cup and Olympic matches. While her love for the game has never changed, Riley has seen the importance of using her voice and the influence she has on and off the pitch.

The trio founded Super Evil Genius Corporation, a marketing and branding agency, in 2018 and has been redefining the industry ever since with intentional and inspiring content.

In just four years, the founders have gone from pitching themselves to anyone who would listen to being sought after by renowned artists and companies, including Flume, Black Book Records and Wynn Nightlife. With media consumption at an all-time high, the trio seeks to have a positive impact on their audience. “We want to elicit a positive reaction from the content we produce. You should feel happy; you should feel calm; you should feel ecstatic,” Reis, the head of accounts and content, explains. Most of all, they hope to be everchanging. “We keep learning not only as a company but as individuals, and that is reflected in the way the agency has grown and what we’re able to do,” Jaso notes. “It’s on us to continue to evolve.”

As someone who didn't grow up going to restaurants as a child, this was a pivotal moment for the East LA native who was figuring out his next career move. “I never knew that food could taste like that,” says Martin. “That experience really opened my eyes and made me feel like I too can be creative and enjoy what I do.”

Chef Phillip Martin experienced his most memorable meal when he was 21 years old. During a visit to The Bazaar in Beverly Hills, he gained his first exposure to fine dining through a plate of delicious paella.

Not only did The Bazaar help Martin discover his culinary passion, but he also met his wife a few years later when they both worked at this restaurant. “It took me a couple of years to finally get a job [at The Bazaar], and when I did, it changed my life. I got to learn [from who] I was looking up to on a pedestal, and meeting my wife there was the cherry on top.”

A performer, Martin found parallels between the high-energy world of the kitchen and the rush of adrenaline that he felt when playing music on stage. He gravitated towards the culinary field and honed his skills at Paris cooking school, Le Cordon Bleu, and restaurants in New York and Southern California. In particular, he gained pivotal experiences by cooking at LACMA and the Walt Disney Concert Hall—places replete with creativity that Martin resonates with. “Being in those types of venues where art and music flow really inspires me,” says DuringMartin.thepandemic, Martin worked as a private chef before becoming Executive Chef of TRIO this past April. “It was very gratifying to cook in people’s houses and hear how much they enjoyed [the meal]… that really helped me when I eventually returned to restaurants,” says Martin.

In the Kitchen

For Martin, nothing’s better than enjoying fresh, handmade pasta with a simple sauce.

Moo’s Craft Barbecue blends traditional Texas techniques with CaliMexi flavors, resulting in mouthwatering barbecue that is innovative yet nostalgic. Though Moo’s still participates in regular pop-ups, their permanent location in Lincoln Heights is the perfect place to grab a pint and some pulled pork. While you can’t go wrong with any of the meats, definitely save room for dessert and order the banana pudding. Also, Moo’s Craft Barbecue has been known to sell out, so do your best to get there early and beat the dinner rush.

Everything at Slab is slow-cooked, resulting in melt-in-your-mouth meats that’ll have you drooling. From spare ribs to smoked chicken, everything is finger-licking good (literally). When it comes to sides, the creamy mac and cheese takes the cake, but the collard greens cure even the most savory of cravings. Though it is listed under dessert, order the cornbread with honey butter with your meal and let your taste buds soar with this sweet and savory combo.

The portions are massive, making it a great place to go with a group. Once you make it to the front of the line (be prepared—there will be a line), order at the counter and snag a spot while you sip on a canned michelada or pint of Capistrano Brewing Co. beer. Between the rustic brick walls and the sports bar setup, Smoqued BBQ in Orange is one of the best places to watch your favorite teams while grubbing on some classic comfort food. The joint was started by two friends who wanted to bring locals together over great beer and food, and it has since become one of the most popular BBQ restaurants in the area. Start your meal off with Smoqued’s signature avocado fries and decadent smoked candied bacon. Hot Pot at Home

There is no denying that sauces and spices can make or break a meal. Thanks to Fly By Jing, you can take at-home meals to the next level with the vibrant and vivacious flavors of Chengdu.

“Fly By Jing was inspired by the flavors of my hometown,” says founder Jing Gao. “Though I grew up living everywhere, I was born in Chengdu, and in my 20s, I went to China and was able to form a new connection with myself through flavor and food.” Despite the fact that a job in tech is what brought Jing back to China, a passion for Chengdu’s 5,000-yearold culinary heritage is what inspired her to stay. “I quit my tech job and decided to stay in China to open a restaurant that was inspired by the ‘fly’ or hole-in-the-wall restaurants that are so popular in Chengdu,” explains Jing. Eventually, Jing made her move to Los Angeles, and in 2018, she started the brand Fly By Jing. The flavors and products are inspired by traditional Chengdu cuisine, but Jing put her own personal touch on each product, ensuring everything she makes is fully aligned with her own vision. “When starting your own business, it’s really important to know your ‘why’...There’s no denying that it is a tough journey, but as long as you remember why you started, you will be able to stick it out and keep going,” she says.

“Though I grew up living everywhere, I was born in Chengdu, and in my 20s, I went to China and was able to form a new connection with myself through flavor and food.”

Though Fly By Jing is best known for its beloved Sichuan chili crisps, the brand has since expanded to include several other must-have pantry items. “Some of my ‘can’t live without’ items include the chili crisps (of course), the King Zhong sauce, which is sweet and spicy sauce, and our frozen dumplings.”

All Aboard » The Boat People Cruise started with couple Brooke and Elijah sharing a love for the sea. They decided to purchase their own sailboat and quickly became known as “The Boat People.” Since then, they’ve turned their passion into a business, offering on-the-water picnic cruises to those who love the ocean as much as they do.

Nothing beats golden hour in California.SouthernThere’s something so magical about this period of daytime just before sunset that makes us fall in love all over again with where we live. And if you ask any local, they’d tell you the best spot to savor golden hour is on a boat. So we hopped aboard The Boat People Cruise, a charming sailboat that roams Newport Harbor, for a pre-sunset picnic cruise. With an ice-cold bucket of Corona Hard Seltzers and a sea breeze, we couldn’t think of a better way to spend a fall evening.

Each flavor has its own timeless look and was specifically made to be visually appealing. “We wanted to create a drink that not only tasted delicious, but that you don’t want to set down when you’re about to take a photo,” says Shiva. “The can enhances the aesthetic of the photo.”

You’ll taste the sweetness of cantaloupe at its peak during summer in the Melon Margarita flavor, while the Orange Blossom Martini has a fragrant, delicate citrus influence. And last but not least, the Cucumber Lime Mojito is a sophisticated, refreshing take on the classic mojito, delivering a palatepleasing finish. The design process of making Cleobella products is a close-knit, collaborative process with artisans from around the world, including India and Bali. “We draw all of the prints from an artisan, then the drawing is placed onto teakwood and hand-carved by a couple of families who have been doing this generationally,” says O’Brien. Using a heritage block printing technique and then printing with a water-based dye, Cleobella’s clothing is wearable art—each item perfectly imperfect and oneof-a-kind to celebrate each individual’s uniqueness. Everything from the lining to the handmade nature of the product is signature to this brand and uses the slowest form of fashion.

“I love that Cleobella gets to be a part of women’s journeys in a small way and allows them to feel confident,” describes O’Brien when referring to her customers. The passion for not only the brand but for the lifestyle of empowering women and supporting artisans comes from an internal light. “I try to always come from a heart-centered place; leading from the heart will always guide you to the right place. Whenever I have an opportunity, I connect with my heart space, and Cleobella really is a heart-lead company.”

I’d recommend starting Botox early on to preserve that natural glow.”
