Is Your Conservatory TOO HOT TOO COLD In The Summer?

Why invest in a New Home Conservatory Roof? We are approximately 75% cheaper (better priced) than replacing your existing roof. HOW? 1. We insulate and improve the energy efficiency of your conservatory ceiling from the inside of your conservatory. 2. We do not replace your existing conservatory roof. Our Solution: We use an interior lightweight guaranteed insulated system that will keep your conservatory COOL in the Summer and WARM in

In The Winter?

the Winter. This guaranteed installation is carried out in 1 day with the minimum of disruption to you. We only insulate the interior conservatory ceiling and transform your conservatory into a living space that can be used by you to enjoy 365 days a year - even when the sun is shining for hours or heavy snow is on the ground. There is no change to the external appearance of your conservatory roof. How many times during the winter period have you wasted energy and money by allowing the heat from a radiator or

electric fan to escape through the conservatory roof? Why are you wasting expensive heating? WE HAVE THE SOLUTION Compare our price to a new conservatory roof - taking up to 3/4 days to complete with all the household disruption and noise that occurs. Your garden is affected by all the work being carried out. For further information, telephone 07979 867550 or 01642 386009.

ut established hedges in June to tidy them if they are growing fast. A final cut can be done in early autumn before the weather turns colder. Clip Box hedges and shapes. Scoop out Blanket weed from ponds to keep the water clear. Make sure that canes used to stake plants are topped with eye protectors. Use old plastic plant pots if you have any lying around. Patio and Container Gardening Stake Lilies and Gladiolus growing in pots. They may be damaged by strong winds as they run up to flower. Feed your summer containers each week with a liquid or a concentrate that can be added to your watering can. Keep an eye on hanging baskets and check them for water twice a day. Watch for slug and snail damage and use your preferred method of control. Try cutting an orange in half and leaving outside. Slugs are attracted to oranges making it easier to find the pests, scoop them up and get rid of them! Bulbs and Perennials Lift congested clumps of Daffodils and

dry off the bulbs ready to be replanted in autumn. Lift and ‘heel in’ Tulips if they are in the way of any plans for your summer borders. Once they have finished dying back, they can be replanted in November. Chop back spring flowering Clematis including C. montana and C. macropetala to tidy them. Some of the old, flowered wood can be removed completely if the plants are very congested. Stake tall growing Dahlias as they start to grow away. Trees and Shrubs Remove as many dead heads from Rhododendrons as possible before they set seed by snapping them off. Prune any long new growths on evergreen shrubs such as Choysia, Viburnum tinus and Arbutus to shape them. Prune Rock Roses (Helianthemum) hard after flowering to keep them bushy and make them live longer. Feed Roses with a granular fertilizer such as Top Rose and water in well. Remove spent flower heads regularly on those that repeat flower. Sowing and Planting Tie Sweet Peas to their supports to

Plant out stock purchased from your local garden centre as soon as you can and make sure that newly planted stock does not go short of water. Sow Wallflowers in a nursery bed if you have not already done so. Plant out tender (half hardy) perennials including Osteospermum and Pelargoniums (Geraniums) now that threat of frost is past. Lawns Cut your lawn at least once a week if the grass is growing strongly, on a low blade setting. Spot treat any weeds with a ready to use lawn weed killer. Apply a granular or liquid feed to green up your grass if it is needed. Lightly cut newly sown lawns when the grass reaches a height of 5 to 7cm (2 to 3 inches). The Vegetable Garden Tap the blooms on Tomato plants to help pollination. Plant out Sweet Corn in a block rather than a row for better pollination. Plant out Runner and French beans sown last month once they are large enough. Plant out Courgettes and other squashes into well-manured ground. Transplant Leeks to their final position once they have reached 25cm high. Water all crops well, twice a week if the ground is very dry. Wildlife Provide a wooden ramp so that frogs and toads can escape from sunken areas in the garden such as decking. Leave an area of long grass in a quiet corner if you have space. Many Butterflies will lay their eggs on this and it will provide cover for young frogs, toads and newts. Begin to collect pieces of rotting wood or old logs and place them in a shady corner as a habitat for insects and other creatures. As well as a breeding place this will also act as a larder for birds.

Motoring

DIESEL DRIVERS TARGETED AGAIN IN NEW MOT RULES

V

W employees are still being charged in the US over the company’s diesel emissions fraud and there is no doubt that the sensational announcement that VW had been cheating the system with a device that hid the truth from both the authorities and the purchaser has created an increasingly poor opinion of not only their diesel engines but diesel engines as a whole. That has proved to be a major problem, particularly in the North East, where the resulting downturn in diesel sales (down by a third in March over last year’s figures) has already led to the announcement of imminent job losses at Nissan in Washington. Diesel car drivers have already been hit with surcharges on road tax, company car tax and even parking, and now, as the government pushes to improve air quality, they face the prospect of being charged to drive in city centres, including London, Birmingham, Derby and Southampton. Councils are also making plans to charge owners of the most polluting vehicles when

they drive in congested areas. In some regions, this is likely to include most diesel cars that are more than twoand-a-half years old, along with vans, buses and lorries. It’s no wonder that drivers are deserting the fuel. New diesel car sales in March were 37% down on the previous year, with 91,000 fewer cars registered. Despite the extra taxes and charges, which will cost some drivers more than £50 extra each week, however, there is still a lot of sense buying new diesel - particularly as prices are increasingly competitive. Newer cars will not be affected by these charges, so you can avoid many upcoming charges with a newer diesel that meets the latest emission standard, known as Euro 6. Every new car sold since September 2015 has had to comply with this. And now there’s more bad news for diesel enthusiasts with the change in MOT rules that took effect in May, because under the new rules diesel cars are set to be hit hardest. Defects will be categorised in three different ways and testers will grade them

PAGE 18 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers

See Page 30 for our Index of Advertisers as dangerous, major or minor. Those with just a minor fault may still be passed, while it will be illegal for a motorist to drive away with a dangerous defect. Minor faults will be flagged on the MOT certificate with other advisory notices. Diesel particulate filters (DPF) will now also be checked, and you’ll be failed if you’ve had it removed or tampered with. The smoke test limit will also be slashed. Other changes to the MOT test include the addition of a check for reverse lights, while brake discs will be inspected to see if they are “significantly or obviously worn”. Some new items will also be tested during the MOT which include tyres obviously under inflated, contaminated brake fluid, fluid leaks that pose an environmental risk and defective brake pad warning lights or if brake pads / discs are missing. While the government claims these new rules are a way of making roads safer it’s easy to see them as yet another way to

extract as much money as possible from the motoring public. RAC spokesman Simon Williams explained: “The new system creates the potential for confusion as testers will have to make a judgement as to whether faults are ‘dangerous’, ‘major’ or ‘minor’. “This will surely be open to interpretation which may lead to greater inconsistency from one test centre to another.” That’s all we need!

urries and Indian snacks are easy to make at home once you have invested in the spices, which, once bought, will last you a while. The most common spices used are cumin, coriander, turmeric, chilli, garam masala – these can be bought in Indian grocery stores in Middlesbrough for around £1 each. Fresh ginger, garlic and coriander are also common – you can buy these in the same place, chop the fresh green coriander and store in your freezer for future recipes. Ginger, garlic, coriander and cumin are all good for your digestion and contain vitamins and minerals. Ingredients: 2 inch piece of fresh ginger, 4 garlic cloves, 1 onion, fresh or dried chilli to taste, 200g cooked potatoes (preferably new potatoes), 1 teaspoon coriander, 1 teaspoon cumin, ½ teaspoon turmeric, ½ teaspoon salt, 250g spinach, ½ teaspoon garam masala. THE ROYAL WEDDING... DID IT MAKE YOU THINK?

THE wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on Saturday, May 19th in Windsor Castle’s St. George’s Chapel was a truly joyous event and didn’t they just look fantastic. Yet despite the couple’s obvious happiness there were still people I know who - on the day displayed a cynicism about the institution of both the Royalty and marriage itself that I simply couldn’t come to terms with. We did, however, discuss the subject at length and it speaks volumes for the kind of people I associate with that the following little marital anecdotes were the result of that conversation. No offence intended for the happily married but I still find most of them quite funny. A woman was having a conversation with a friend she hadn’t seen for a long time. “Yes,” she said, “It was me who made my husband a millionaire.”“And what was he before you married him?” asked the friend. The woman replied, “A multi-millionaire!” A husband was arguing with his wife about her relatives. “No,” he said, “I don’t hate your relatives. In fact, I like your mother-in-law much better than I like mine!” You know the honeymoon is pretty much over when you start going out with the boys on Friday nights and you find out your wife is doing the same! Two guys were comparing notes and one said to the other “I have never had an affair. Can you say the same?” His friend said “Yes, but not with such a straight face” A couple were invited to some old friends’ home for dinner. The old chap was surprised to hear his friend precede every request or statement to his wife with endearing terms, calling her Honey, My Love, Darling, Sweetheart, etc. He was very impressed since the couple had been married almost 70 years. While the wives were off in the kitchen he said to his friend “I think it’s wonderful that after all these years of marriage, you still call your wife those pet names.” His friend hung his head and said “Well, to tell you the truth I forgot her name about ten years ago.” At my granddaughter’s wedding, the DJ polled the guests to see who had been married the longest. It turned out to be my husband and

me. The DJ asked us, “What advice would you give to the newly-married couple? ”Well, I said, “the three most important words in a marriage are, ‘You’re probably right.’” The DJ then looked at my husband and asked ‘and what do you think? My husband looked him straight in the eye and said, “She’s probably right.” A man was speaking to God. “God, why did you make women so beautiful?” he asked. God said: “I did that so you would love and marry them”. Then the man asked: “Well, God; why did you make them such good cooks?” God said: “I also did that so you would love and marry them”. The man then asked: “But God, why did you make women so stupid?” God replied “I did that so they would love and marry you!” The newlywed wife said to her husband when he returned from work, “I have great news for you. Pretty soon, we’re going to be three in this house instead of two.” Her husband ran to her with a smile on his face and delight in his eyes. He was glowing with happiness and kissed and hugged his wife.”“Oh,” she said, “you’ve made me so happy. I didn’t think you’d be so glad that my mother was moving in with us tomorrow.” Harry was about to get married and was very excited about the forthcoming event. He was on his way out of the office when his boss came over with an outstretched hand. ‘Congratulations, Harry,’ he said, ‘I just wanted to tell you that I’ve been married for twenty two years and I know that you’ll always remember today with the happiest of memories and as one of the happiest day of your life.’‘But Sir,’ said Harry, ‘I’m not getting married until tomorrow.’‘Yes,’ said his boss, ‘I know.’ My two old aunts always came up to me at family weddings and would poke me in the ribs saying ‘it’ll be you next’ and cackling with laughter. I devised the perfect way to stop them. I started doing it back to them at funerals. The first time I ever set eyes on my wife I was awestruck by her looks - to me she was ‘drop dead gorgeous.’ I said to her ‘you’re gorgeous.’ She said ‘drop dead!’

Football

IT WAS CLOSE, BUT NOWHERE NEAR CLOSE ENOUGH!

W

ell, we managed the play-offs, but that’s about as much as you could say on the subject. Statistics show we only lost by a single goal over the two Villa matches, but let’s be honest, there was rarely any danger of us reaching Wembley on those two performances. Realistically, the most relevant statistic was the fact that even though we were chasing a 1-0 deficit in the second leg we didn’t manage a single shot on target in the entire ninety minutes. The closest was Downing’s free kick at the end but by then most of us had accepted that we had been saved a very long and probably a very unrewarding trip to Wembley. The real truth is that we simply weren’t good enough and it’s fairly plain to see that Tony Pulis has a considerable amount of work to do over the next three months. The biggest difficulty, of course, is that having failed to go up he firstly has to decide who he wants to keep, who he can keep and who he feels has proved over the last few months that they are not really up to the job of getting ‘Boro back to the Premiership. I think we all have our own ideas on those aspects of this particular conundrum, but

since he has already stressed he doesn’t want to spend much of Steve Gibson’s money he’s going to have to work a few miracles. It’s fairly certain that a bid of thirty million or so for Adama Traore would see him move on, and while he’s been tremendous to watch since Pulis arrived it would certainly free up a bit of cash for the manager to stamp his own personality on the team. Unfortunately he isn’t particularly famous for having much of that commodity and it’s fairly safe to assume he would be just as interested in keeping the defence tight as he would trying to make us more exciting, more adventurous and consequently more attack minded. I’m certainly not going to jump on the ‘long ball merchant’ bandwagon because what he did with Traore was nothing short of sensational, but it’s difficult to see how we can become more adventurous without finding a couple of truly progressive midfielders who are able to create the openings we need to improve on the pretty poor ‘goals for’ column of the past two seasons. It’s fair to say, however, that despite relatively poor performances in the two

play-off games Mo Besic has nevertheless proved he has the ability to fill one of those positions but there is no guarantee he will still be with us anyway. I’ve said many times that given a choice of being in London or Middlesbrough, most players would opt for the former. Had we been able to persuade Aleksandar Mitrovic to come to us instead of Fulham, for instance, things might have been so different! The biggest problem we have is that most of our competitors are probably looking for exactly the same thing as us so competition will continue to be fierce and the right type of player increasingly rare. At the moment the silence from the Riverside is pretty deafening so we can only hope that plans are underway and prospective targets being kept secret. Fortunately, it’s all Tony’s problem and we can only wish him all the best in his efforts to solve it! Have a good Summer.
