In the flower garden Prune your Wisteria now, cutting back summer side-shoots to 2 or 3 buds. Towards the end of the month prune summer-flowering Clematis before active growth Cut back shrubs such as Cornus and Salix cultivars (grown for their colourful winter stems) down to their bases. Cut back the old foliage from ornamental grasses before growth begins - clip them to within a few centimetres of the ground. Prune overwintered fuchsias back to one or two buds on each shoot. Prune Winter Flowering Jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum) after flowering to encourage new growth for next year’s blooms. Cut back the previous years growth to 5cm from the old wood. Prune winter flowering shrubs such as Mahonia and Viburnum x bodnantense after their colourful display has finished. Trim winter-flowering heathers as the flowers disappear, to prevent the plants becoming leggy. Remove any faded flowers from your winter pansies to stop them setting seed. This will encourage a flush of new flowers when
the weather warms up. Lift and divide snowdrops still ‘in the green’ if you want to move them or create more plants. If you need to move deciduous trees or shrubs, now is the time to do it provided the soil is not frozen or waterlogged. Plant Lilies and Allium bulbs. Plant bare root roses in a sunny position for spectacular summer colour. Plant fragrant winter flowering shrubs to add interest to borders. Try Daphne, Viburnum x bodnantense, Witch Hazel (Hamamelis x intermedia) and Wintersweet (Chimonanthus praecox). Hardwood cuttings taken last year may need planting or potting on now. Pot on rooted cuttings of tender perennial plants taken last summer. Look out for Hellebore leaf spot (rounded brown spots on the leaves) and remove any leaves that are affected.
In the vegetable garden Force rhubarb plants for an early crop. Plant new rhubarb crowns now. Mulch perennial vegetables such as Asparagus and Artichokes with well rotted manure or garden compost.

Start sowing vegetable seeds such as leeks, onions and celeriac under cover now. Prepare vegetable seed beds by removing all weeds and forking in plenty of compost. Cover prepared soil with sheets of black plastic to keep it drier and warmer in preparation for spring planting. If you garden on heavy clay soil but want to make an early start in the garden, build raised beds before the growing season gets under way. The soil will warm up faster and raised beds drain quickly too.

In the fruit garden Cut autumn-fruiting raspberry canes to the ground to stimulate new canes, which will fruit in the autumn. Cut the tips of summerfruiting raspberry canes that have grown beyond the top of their supports; cut just above a bud. Continue to plant raspberry canes for the coming summer. Prune apple trees and pear trees whilst they’re still dormant. Leave plum trees, cherry trees and apricots until the summer as pruning these fruit trees now will make them susceptible to Silver Leaf disease. Prune blackcurrant bushes, gooseberries and redcurrants to maintain a productive framework. Currant bushes can also still be planted between now and the spring. Protect the blossoms of apricots, peaches and nectarines. These stone fruit trees can also be planted now. Mulch fruit trees with well rotted manure or garden compost taking care not to mound mulch up around the trunk.

THE SKODA KAROQ - A WELL-BUILT SUV WELL WORTH CONSIDERING...
W
e have featured a number of Skoda models in the past, always recognising that while the company was the butt of numerous jokes during its formative years, its subsequent takeover by VW has given it much more respect and has indeed made it a range well worth considering. Its latest offering is the Karoq - a small and well built SUV that is seen as a direct replacement for the company’s popular Yeti model though offering larger dimensions. Built using the same MBQ platform as some of VW’s other SUVs, the car offers loads of interior space and a very generous boot. A high level seating position gives a great view of the road and with a compact design it allows easy negotiation even around the most cramped inner city conditions. And while the distinctive strong styling of the Yeti has been replaced, the Karoq is a really good looking car with sharper angles and the currently popular cat-like headlights. Internally, the cabin has a strong, attractive design with loads of in-built quality. The soft-touch, rubberised dashboard is
particularly good but there’s a real feeling of solidity thanks to the use of premium quality materials. An excellent example of that is in the upgraded Canton infotainment system with a sizeable high-resolution display complete with DAB radio, Bluetooth connectivity, Smartphone integration and a 12 speaker audio system. There are also some really useful little additions as well, including useful gadgets like the sealed rubbish bin in the driver’s door pocket, the rear-facing tablet holders that can be fitted to the front headrests and height adjustable front seats. There are three trims to choose from – SE, SE L and Edition. The SE entry-level models are equipped with 17in alloy wheels, black roof rails, autonomous emergency braking, automatic wipers and lights, front fog lights, rear parking sensors and cruise control as standard as well as dual-zone climate control and the aforementioned infotainment system. Healthy Eating TRY A MEAT-FREE MONDAY... HERBY MUSHROOMS AND GREENS
I
n this New Year, how about trying a Meat-free Monday. You can change many of your usual recipes by exchanging the meat for meatsubstitute or veg. For example, if making spaghetti bolognaise, use Quorn mince instead and just add a teaspoon or two of marmite to give it taste then add to your pasta sauce! If you want to get more adventurous you could try making lentil meatballs. This easy recipe is packed full of healthy veg and cooked using olive oil:
Herby Mushrooms and Greens (serves 2) Ingredients: 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1 onion finely chopped 4 garlic cloves, finely diced 10g sun-dried tomatoes in oil, roughly chopped Leaves from 4 sprigs thyme or ½ tsp dried salt & pepper 50-100g mushrooms thinly sliced 100g frozen peas 100g sugar snap peas (or chopped broccoli) 50g spinach (or cabbage) finely chopped 50ml veg stock or 1tsp veg stock powder/stock cube in 50g water.
Method: Heat the oil over a medium heat, add the onions, garlic, sun-dried tomatoes, thyme and salt & pepper – fry for a few minutes. Add the mushrooms and fry till soft. Add peas, sugar snap peas or broccoli and cabbage (if using spinach put this in later). Add the stock, put lid on and cook till everything is done. Serve with bread, or add rice or beans to it to make a filling meal. Can take leftovers to work for lunch with salad.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A MONTH MAKES!

ecause of the deadline problems associated with the festive season, my January ‘Boro piece had to be written while Garry Monk was still in charge. Fast forward to this month’s observations and it’s amazing how much different the whole Middlesbrough FC spectrum now looks. The superb all round league display in the 3-0 win at QPR followed another excellent performance against Fulham, and though that culminated in a 1-0 defeat - it was the biggest travesty of justice I’ve seen for a long time. Both games suggest that new incumbent Tony Pulis has indeed made a huge difference in a very short space of time. Consistently good displays from the likes of George Friend, Adama Traore and the back four as a whole – including his decision to switch Ryan Shotton to left back - confirm
Pulis’ ability to create the kind of organisation that’s vitally important as the basis from which everything good about the team emanates. And to add to that impressive on-field influence he has also been brilliant off it. The difference between his press conferences and those of both Karanka and Monk is like chalk and cheese. Honesty is something you don’t see very often in the modern game but he does answer questions honestly, tells the truth about his intentions (‘I won’t be spending any more of Steve Gibson’s money’) and his assessment of players reveals his true feelings that allow everybody the impression they know what’s going on. It’s a remarkable turnaround in just a few weeks and I genuinely believe we have a much better chance of getting back to the Premiership than we had just that short month ago. His recent assertion that he won’t be tinkering with the way the academy is

The future for the ‘Boro certainly looks much, much better.
