P

lant spring flowering bulbs such as daffodils, crocus, muscari and scilla but not tulips. Continue with dead heading and weeding so that you extend the flowering season and keep soil nutrients and moisture for your plants and not the weeds. If you have any large clumps of perennials or alpines then now is a good time to split and divide. Most plants can be separated into many smaller pieces which can all be replanted or given away. Discard the very old centre portion as this will not make a good new plant. Plant out new spring bedding such as wallflowers, primula and bellis. Bring inside any tender perennials such as fuchsia or geraniums before the first frosts. If you have somewhere frost free they can be kept over winter or if not then take cuttings. After the first frost lift cannas and dahlias or if you live in a sheltered spot you can try to leave them in the ground but cover them with straw or bracken.

lawn or to repair bald patches in an existing one. If the edge of a lawn has broken down then cut out a patch round it of about one foot square and turn the turf round so that the broken edge is now next to the lawn and the good edge is facing out. The bare patch can then be sprinkled with fine soil or compost and then seeded. It is a good time to scarify (rake out all the thatch and debris with a long tined rake) and aerate (make holes all over the lawn with a fork and brush in compost). It is hard work but well worth doing as the lawn looks much better and it prevents problems such as moss and water logging. After scarifying and aerating put on an autumn feed that is high in potassium. Don’t use a summer feed as you will get soft growth which will be prone to disease. Finally top dress the lawn with loam or sand working it in with a still brush or the back of a rake. If this all sounds like too much hard work you can buy scarifiers and aeraters to make life easier.

Remove any diseased fruits to stop the spread of disease. At the end of the month, wrap grease band around the trunks of fruit trees to prevent the wingless female moths from climbing up to lay their eggs. Continue to sow over wintering seeds such as spinach, turnip, lettuce and onions. Any outdoor tomatoes should be picked before frosts and brought indoors to ripen. Leave them on the vine and place the whole truss in a greenhouse or on a windowsill. Lift onions and shallots but do not bend over at the neck as they wont store as well. If the weather is not wet leave them to dry on the soil otherwise bring them into a dry shed. Lift all root vegetables and store in a cool, dark and dry place. Leave parsnips in the ground as they are better tasting after being frosted.

Wildlife Clean out bird baths and keep them topped up with water. As the breeding season for birds is not quite over it is still not safe to put out peanuts and other large bird food but continue with small bird food. If you have the room, put a pile of twigs or logs in a quiet corner of the garden as these will become home to lots of wildlife. To make it an attractive area plant around the logs with primroses, ferns etc. Do not cut back any plants with seed heads, such as sunflowers, as they provide a useful source of food for birds. Make or buy a hedgehog hibernation box and leave it under a pile of dead leaves at the back of garden where it will be undisturbed. If making it yourself add a tunnel to the entrance hole to stop predators from entering the nest.

GREAT VALUE AND DYNAMIC TECHNOLOGY AS THE NEW FORD KA+ IS LAUNCHED

I

t’s hard to believe that the Ford Ka has been around since 1996. The original was a great little car with a refreshing new look for its day and was influential in creating the ‘City Car’ concept. Ford eventually revised the Ka a couple of years ago but it proved to be less popular than the original and has now led to Ford revising it once again but this time with much more than just a facelift. A complete revision has taken place both inside and out and Ford have created a five door version that fits into the same class as the bigger and more expensive Fiesta. Externally, it looks great - and very different - with a new mesh grille with chrome surrounds, standard fog lamps, daylight running lamps and restyled front and rear bumpers. Rain sensing windscreen wipers and automatic headlamps also come as standard. Under the bonnet, a three-cylinder 1.2 petrol engine replaces the old four cylinder version, while Ford have also introduced a 1.5 litre diesel into the line-up. Ford

claim that the petrol engine offers 10per cent more torque and a four per cent fuel efficiency improvement. In addition, KA+ also has an integrated exhaust manifold that optimises the exhaust system warm-up for reduced emissions. Top of the range will be the Active crossover variant that has rugged good looks, more space inside and a 23mm increase in ride height. Active models feature SUV-inspired styling, raised ride height and additional body side mouldings and exclusively come with unique 15-inch alloy wheels and Canyon Ridge bronze metallic exterior paint colour. It differs from standard models with Active - embossed scuff plates and a leather steering wheel incorporating cruise control switches and featuring Sienna Hazel stitching. “Last year Ford sold more than 200,000 SUVs in Europe for the first time, and demand for SUV and crossover models has never been higher,” said Roelant de Waard, vice president, Marketing, Sales and Service. “Our new Ford KA+ Active model will this

PAGE 18 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers

See Page 30 for our Index of Advertisers year make the crossover affordable to even greater numbers of customers, with aspirational styling and sophisticated technologies that customers would expect to see in much more expensive cars. Ford has sold more than 61,000 KA+ since we first introduced the model in late 2016, and now we’re offering customers even more choice with our first KA+ diesel engine for greater fuel-efficiency and cruising ability, and all-new petrol powertrains that are more responsive in town, all meeting the latest stringent emissions standards.” In addition to the Active crossover, KA + is also available in Studio and Zetec specifications. Internally, the Ka+ has increased proportions, raised ride-height and chassis tuning, all of which should increase space inside the cabin. Ford SYNC 3 communications and entertainment system are included as standard with a tablet-inspired 6.5-inch colour touch screen compatible with Apple CarPlay

and Android Auto. Other standard tech includes power front windows and door mirrors, remote central locking, Hill Start Assist, Speed Limiter, and Ford Easy Fuel. A number of additional safety features have been included which includes six airbags, Electronic Stability Control and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System. The new KA+ and KA+ Active will be priced from £10,795 in the U.K. giving Ford Ka fans a great deal for not a lot of money.

Healthy Eating VEGETARIAN BAKED POTATO

P

otatoes are one of the best sources of starch, vitamins, minerals and dietary fibre. 100g provides 70 calories. They have hardly any fat (just 0.1g per 100g) and no cholesterol; they are also high in fibre so good for conditions such as constipation (you must eat the skin as well). The usual fillings for baked potatoes are butter, cheese, tuna mayonnaise etc which increase the fat content and make them less healthy. This recipe contains peppers, onions, garlic and tomatoes, which are all low in fat and full of nutrients. Olive oil is used instead of then. When they are soft, turn the heat up butter or margarine as it contains vitamins a bit and cook till slightly browned. BACK TO SCHOOL...

I

t's come round again .... early September when parents thank the Lord that teaching is to resume and pupils are forced to 'wend their weary way back to school.' The Summer holidays have a great deal going for them but let's all be honest - six weeks is probably a bit too much for some and not enough for others (you don't need a degree to work out which is which but we reckon both pupils and teachers are on the same side). Anyway, here are some nice stories that epitomise the fun side of school. A head teacher is making his rounds of the school when he hears a terrible commotion coming from one of the classrooms. He rushes in and spots one young chap who's taller than the others and seems to be making the most noise. He seizes the lad, drags him to the hall, and tells him to wait there until he is excused. Returning to the classroom, the head teacher restores order and lectures the class for half an hour about the importance of good behaviour. 'Now,' he says, 'are there any questions?' One girl stands up timidly. 'Yes sir,' she asks, 'may we have our teacher back?' The teacher was examining the essays her pupils had submitted on 'our family pet.' 'Tommy,' she said,' have you copied your sister's essay on the family's pet dog?' 'No miss,' said Tommy. 'Then can you tell me why it's exactly the same, word for word?' 'Of course, miss,' said Tommy. 'It's the same dog!' The summer holiday was over and young Jack returned to school. Only two days later his teacher phoned his mother to tell her that Jack was misbehaving. 'Wait a minute,' the mother said, 'that's a bit unfair. I've just had Jack with me for six weeks, he was an absolute monster, and I never called you once.' Nathan came home from his first day at school and his mother asked, 'Well, Nathan, and what did you learn today? 'Not enough' he replied. I have to go back tomorrow.' A first grade teacher handed out a colouring page to the children and on it was a picture

of a frog holding an umbrella. When the class handed them in, one little boy had coloured the frog bright purple. The teacher scolded him, and said, “How often have you seen a purple frog?” The little boy answered, “The same number of times I've seen a frog holding an umbrella.” Jane was talking to Mrs Darby, her teacher, about whales. Mrs Darby said it was physically impossible for a whale to swallow a human because even though it was a very large mammal its throat was very small. Jane replied that the Bible states quite clearly that Jonah was swallowed by a whale so it must be true. Irritated, Mrs Darby reiterated that a whale could not swallow a human; it was physically impossible. Finally, Jane murmured, 'When I get to heaven I will ask Jonah, myself.' Mrs Darby continued, 'What if Jonah went to hell?' 'In that case,' Jane replied, 'you can ask him.' Teacher: Ricky, what is the past participle of the verb to ring? Ricky: What do you think it is, sir? Teacher: I don't think, Ricky, I KNOW! Ricky: That's all right 'cos I don't think I know either, sir. Little Johnny put his hand up in class and said 'Please Miss, would you punish me for something I didn't do?' 'Of course not, Johnny,' said the teacher, 'why do you ask?' 'Please Miss, because I didn't do my homework!' Teacher: You missed school yesterday, didn't you? Student: Not very much. The teacher said ' I wish you’d pay a little attention, David,' to which David replied ' I'm paying as little as I can, Sir.' While supervising in the playground Miss Barker saw one of her pupils making faces at the others in the playground. She stepped up to gently reprove the child. Smiling sweetly, she said, 'Tommy, when I was a child, I was told if that I made ugly faces, my face would freeze and I would stay like that.' Tommy looked up, smiled and replied, 'Well, Miss Barker, you can't say you weren't warned.'

Football

SO MUCH POTENTIAL TO BUILD ON

T

he catalyst is either that dreadful first half against Millwall on the first day of the season or the subsequently negative remarks from Tony Pulis after the transfer window closed, but there’s a widely held belief among many ‘Boro fans that the bubble that’s seen us take an excellent ten points from twelve (at the time of writing) will burst any time soon. To be fair, most of us expected it to happen against Bristol City as our recent history against them hasn’t been great, but ‘Boro’s display was as strong in that game as in any away performance we’ve seen for a long time. So do we really need loads more players as Pulis suggests or have we actually got a decent enough squad to maintain the great start we’ve already seen? Certainly the next two games (West Brom (h) and Leeds (a)) will give us a good indication, but by the end of those two games the loan window will also have closed and if we haven’t attracted anyone else then that’s it. We’ve already had the snub from Yannick Bolasie who preferred the West Midlands to the North East, but - in contrast - Mo Besic has returned and we already know what we’re going to get from him. Lots of work at both ends of the pitch, plenty of forward movement, but sadly - unless his single goal in his ‘Boro career to date is not an accurate

indication of his scoring prowess - not many goals! Looking at the midfield he’s about to join, though, he’s not as important as he was when he arrived last season. Our midfield looks good with ex Shildon boy Lewis Wing showing exceptional ability, though it would be too much to expect the youngster to be able to maintain that form throughout the season. In that case an extra wide man would certainly be of benefit. Having scored eight goals in four matches, however, the strike force is performing well and we still haven’t been able to call on either Jordan Hugill or Rudy Gestede. Martin Braithwaite, on the other hand, is looking like a real goal scorer. Let’s just hope we can hang on to him. Ironically, our great start to the season could well have a lot to do with the loss of both Adama Traore and Ben Gibson because apart from that rusty first half against Millwall the combination of Dael Fry and Aden Flint has looked extremely strong with three clean sheets in a row. In the background, of course, we still have Daniel Ayala to call on once fit. Perhaps the biggest gain, though, is that we are a lot more balanced going forward now the midfield isn’t constantly having to look for Traore to work miracles. The result is much better forward movement and many more scoring opportunities. I’m personally pleased to also see Stewart Downing back

Solution

to his best, which is possibly another benefit we’ve gained from Traore’s departure. It’s definitely been an encouraging start including that great performance from the kids against Notts County - and it would be good to see a repeat against Rochdale. It was great to see them so enthusiastic about being involved in the penalty shoot-out, a great sign of the confidence that’s being instilled into them. So once again we can admire both the legacy of Dave Parnaby - and indeed the new regime under Craig Liddle - that the academy is still creating huge potential for the club. I must admit that the great start to the season could be a wonderful sign of the things to come, but the West Brom and Leeds results will be a great indication. By the time you read this you will have the advantage over me of knowing how they went. I obviously don’t while I’m writing this, but I can tell you I am hugely optimistic! Come on the ‘Boro!
