Is Your Conservatory TOO HOT TOO COLD In The Summer?

Why invest in a New Home Conservatory Roof? We are approximately 75% cheaper (better priced) than replacing your existing roof. HOW? 1. We insulate and improve the energy eďŹƒciency of your conservatory ceiling from the inside of your conservatory. 2. We do not replace your existing conservatory roof. Our Solution: We use an interior lightweight guaranteed insulated system that will keep your conservatory COOL in the Summer and WARM in

In The Winter?

the Winter. This guaranteed installation is carried out in 1 day with the minimum of disruption to you. We only insulate the interior conservatory ceiling and transform your conservatory into a living space that can be used by you to enjoy 365 days a year - even when the sun is shining for hours or heavy snow is on the ground. There is no change to the external appearance of your conservatory roof. How many times during the winter period have you wasted energy and money by allowing

the heat from a radiator or electric fan to escape through the conservatory roof? Why are you wasting expensive heating? WE HAVE THE SOLUTION Compare our price to a new conservatory roof - taking up to 3/4 days to complete with all the household disruption and noise that occurs. In The Garden

J

uly is the month where a little bit of everything in the plant world is either on its way out (yellowy straggly leaves from spring bulbs and Violas), in full flower looking at its peak (Roses, Lavender & Honeysuckle), or on its way in (Dahlias, Chrysanthemums, maturing fruits). To keep on top of the garden tasks and have time to relax and enjoy your special spot of paradise try and do the following:-

In The Garden Regularly deadhead roses, summer bedding plants and hanging basket plants. This will keep them looking at their best and promote more flowers. Tie in and support any plants that are leaning over towards the sun or weighed down by rainwater. These can include sedums, sunflowers, dahlias, rambling and climbing roses. Watering too much as well as watering too little can be just as damaging so ensure your plants are getting the right amount. If you have homemade compost that is ready to use, mulch plants after watering to hold in moisture. This also acts as a weed suppressor. Make your own quick organic nettle plant tonic to give plants a dose of nitrogen which promotes healthy leafy growth.

Chop nettles, place in bucket with pebbles to keep nettles from floating, fill with water, leave for 3/4 weeks and use diluted one part concentrate to ten parts water. The mixture gets a bit smelly so don’t put it too near the house! Chop the leaves of nettles and put them onto the compost heap to give it a nitrogen rich boost. Hoe around vegetable plants to keep weeds down before they become bigger than the plant and take all the nutrients.

The Lawn New lawns need to be watered if the weather is dry as they need to establish in the first year. Older lawns will benefit from a summer feed to keep them looking at their best. A general all round feed is best but if you have to treat for moss or weed then use a combined feed and killer. Unfortunately weedkiller kills wildflowers too so if you want daisies in your lawn, think again! Add small amounts of lawn clippings to the compost heap and use to mulch around plants in very dry weather to help with moisture loss.

The Greenhouse Tomatoes, cucumbers, melons and aubergines all need to be fed with a high

PAGE 14 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers

See Page 30 for our Index of Advertisers potash solution at weekly/fortnightly intervals and the soil kept moist but not sodden at all times. Temperatures rocket in the greenhouse during July so many gardeners use a white shading paint on the glass that gets the most sun and this is easily wiped off in the autumn. Damping down is needed in the greenhouse on most hot days to keep humidity levels up. When you have finished watering the plants walk backwards towards the door and douse down the floor with the hose or watering can. Remove side shoots of tomato plants above leaf axils to encourage taller stronger plant growth. Cuttings of hydrangeas, cotoneasters, fuchsias and pelargoniums can be taken in July as the warmer weather will encourage vigorous root growth and give new plants a good head start before winter.

Wildlife Ponds need to kept topped up with water as it evaporates in the hot weather. Rainwater is preferable but tap water can be hosed in little and often as necessary. This will maintain the pond’s eco balance. Blanket weed and dead foliage i.e. fallen leaves and decaying lily leaves, need to be removed before they sink to the bottom of the pond. Look out for Lepidopteras! No, not dinosaurs... Butterflies and moths that are fluttering about in abundance this month. Butterflies are particularly attracted to the nectar rich flowers on Buddleias, Echinacea, Marjoram, Thyme and French Marigolds. Put a shallow bowl of water out in the border for birds and hedgehogs and keep it topped up. If you have a bird bath keep the water clean and clear to help prevent diseases like Bird Pox spreading amongst the bird population. This applies to bird feeders too. Rinsing them with a weak solution of household bleach at regular intervals is a good idea.

FORD LAUNCH THEIR BRAND NEW FIESTA - GREAT NEWS FOR ENTHUSIASTS!

S

ince its launch in 2008 the Ford Fiesta has been one of the most familiar cars on the road, bringing quality and style to the small car market and attracting owners who have shown true loyalty to this excellent Super-mini. The modern trend for smaller cars - thanks in the main to the tax and economy benefits they bring - has certainly helped Ford to move the enormous numbers of the Fiesta that they have but they certainly aren’t the only reasons. The Fiesta has always offered many advantages in the areas of reliability and style and there are many drivers in this country who would never dream of deserting Ford for anything else. So, after ten years of exceptional popularity there are many challenges in upgrading something so popular, especially in light of the many alternatives now on the market. That’s probably why Ford have opted for streamlining and subtle changes rather than a major overhaul, even though they are claiming that the car is an ‘all new’ version. But with the aforementioned competition new benefits have had to be introduced. Despite that, the new version is still very similarly styled, yet some great work has been done to soften the overall exterior, getting rid

of the bonnet bulge of the previous model and increasing the size to create a much better balanced - yet still familiar - look. Beneath that, the car has become stronger and more rigid with the inclusion of 35% more boron steel, stiffer mounting points for the front sub-frame and increased laser welding on the body. The chassis has also been overhauled and now includes a lighter yet stiffer anti-roll bar in the front section and tougher, double bonded suspension bushes and a larger twist beam at the back. The increase of 30mm on the front track and 10mm at the rear has also enabled Ford to claim a ten per cent better cornering grip. Engine-wise, the line-up includes a turbocharged 1.0-litre Eco-boost petrol engine complete with a new six speed manual gearbox and a 1.5-litre TDCi diesel engine with the same gearbox and capable of tax-saving CO2 emissions as low as 82g/km. Topping the range from 2018 will be a 1.5-litre Eco boost unit using turbo charging, high pressure fuel injection and twin independent variable cam timing. Internally, the previous problems of a complicated dashboard and quite small infotainment screen have been replaced with a new 8.0in touch screen which gives

PAGE 18 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers

See Page 30 for our Index of Advertisers much more effective control over operations. And with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto connectivity, a DAB tuner and standard Bluetooth all requirements are well covered. Trim materials have also been upgraded to make the interior even more classy and certainly more modern than its predecessor. Standard equipment on entry-style levels include 15” steel wheels, electrically adjusted and heated door mirrors, lane guidance system, auto headlights and electric front windows. Inside there’s air conditioning, a trip computer, height adjustable driver’s seat and a Smartphone dock. Upgrading to the Zetec also gets you 15” alloy wheels, LED day running lights, a Quickclear windscreen, chrome highlights and leather trimmed hand brake and steering wheel. You’ll also get Ford’s Sync 3 infotainment system with a 6.5in touch screen display, USB connectivity and Smartphone integration. The mid-range Titanium gets you 16in alloys, LED rear lights, electric folding door mirrors, keyless ignition, auto wipers, cruise control,

Established for over 25 years, Wilson Plumbing and Heating are a team of highly trained and experienced professionals. We pride ourselves on excellent customer service and competitive pricing. We can offer boiler finance packages, if required, with terms ranging from 3 to 10 years and parts and labour guarantees of up to 10 years.

velour floor mats and climate control, as well as an 8.0in infotainment display and sat nav. Upgrade to Titanium X and you’ll receive electric rear windows, keyless entry, partial leather upholstery, heated front seats and steering wheel, a rear view camera and a 360-degree Bang & Olufsen Play audio system. Topping the range is the Fiesta Vignale which adds chrome 17in alloy wheels, a unique body kit, rear parking sensors and camera, a panoramic sunroof, and lots of Vignale badges throughout the interior and on the exterior. With prices ranging from the intro version at £12,715 to the top of the range Vignale at £21,225 there is a wide selection of budgets to be satisfied, but this is far from a re-styled version of an original and offers enough new features to maintain Ford’s presence at the favourable end of the small car market. Perhaps they may consider upgrading again in another ten years but in the meantime this car does nothing to reduce their well earned reputation for style, value and reliability. All great news for Fiesta enthusiasts!

VEGAN BANANA BREAD

W

ith many people going vegan for a variety of reasons such as health, the environment and animal welfare, it’s sometimes difficult to find nice dessert or cake recipes which don’t use milk or eggs. This banana bread is quick and easy to make and uses sunflower oil instead of marg or butter, and either soya or almond milk instead of cows milk, plus it’s really nice! Ingredients: 200g plain flour, 100g wholemeal flour (or 50g wholemeal flour and 50g fine cornmeal), 2 teaspoons baking powder, ½ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda, 100g light brown sugar, 150ml soya or almond milk,

Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients and pour in the banana mixture. Chop half the walnuts and add. Transfer to the loaf tin and press the remaining walnuts into the top. Cook for 50 minutes (or until a knife inserted into the loaf comes out clean). Leave to cool for a while then remove from the tin.

WHAT POLITICS USED TO BE LIKE! Great Churchillian Quotes That Stand The Test Of Time HIS enormous influence on the way British people were able to survive the second world war can’t be underestimated yet despite that, Winston Churchill’s political career was not always straightforward. One still can’t help thinking, however, that if he were still here to handle the Brexit negotiations they would be going considerably better that they are at present. We recently discovered some of his great quotations and thoroughly enjoyed them. We hope you do too!

A good speech should be like a woman’s skirt; long enough to cover the subject but short enough to create interest.

Diplomacy is the art of telling people to go to hell in such a way that they ask for directions. You will never reach your destination if you stop and throw stones at every dog that barks. Fear is a reaction. Courage is a decision. A nation that forgets its past has no future. The positive thinker sees the invisible, feels the intangible and achieves the impossible. If you’re not a liberal at twenty you have no heart. If you’re not a conservative at forty you have no brain. Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery. There is nothing government can give you that they haven’t taken from you in the first place. The best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter. Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.

One man with convictions will overwhelm a hundred men who have only opinions.

A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty. If Britain must choose between Europe and the open sea, she must always choose the open sea.

The main vice of capitalism is the uneven distribution of prosperity. The main vice of socialism is the even distribution of misery. However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results. You don’t make the poor richer by making the rich poorer. A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on. Life can either be accepted or changed. If it is not accepted it must be changed. If it cannot be changed , then it must be accepted. We contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket trying to life himself by the handle. In the course of my life I have often had to eat my words, and I must confess I have always found it a wholesome diet.

Football

‘LET’S NOT FORGET OUR HISTORY’ When Victorian minister William Gladstone visited Middlesbrough in 1862, he found a town at the heart of the industrial revolution and made the now famous statement ‘This is a remarkable place, the youngest of England’s enterprise. It’s an infant,’ he said, ‘but if so, it’s an infant Hercules.’ Fourteen years later Middlesbrough football club was formed and to the people of Teesside it became an institution that embodied the spirit and character of that ‘infant Herculean’ prediction. Fast forward 150 years and those words of Gladstone were the catalyst for ‘Infant Hercules,’ a fantastic song written and performed by Teesside based Joseph Hammill (pictured above) and his wonderful family group Cattle and Cane. I’ve seen them many times and that song is always one of the highlights of their performances. And when two years ago the FA held their annual Academy conference at Middlesbrough’s wonderful Hurworth training facility and magnificent Rockcliffe Hall Hotel, Cattle and Cane performed the song live to open the conference in the most appropriate Teesside manner. But now, perhaps the greatest accolade so far is that the words of this wonderful song will be immortalised by being printed inside the collar of the new ‘Boro home shirt created by Hummel for the 2018/19 season. Joseph is naturally delighted and considers the idea a real privilege and one of his proudest moments in music. “That definitely wasn’t

something I thought would happen when writing it! I like songs that make you want to push your chest out with pride and I hope ‘Boro fans feel that with the song. There’s something about the area that you can’t quite identify in words. I guess spirit would be the closest I can get.’ Joseph is now taking that spirit even further by embarking on a solo career alongside his work with sister Helen and brother in Cattle and Cane. For anyone not already familiar with the words of the song here they are in full.... Built on the banks of the Tees, this Infant Hercules. Born from grime, born from graft, the world won’t forget Infant Hercules. Men built from steel, women just as strong, ICI at Wilton, Head Wrightson, and Dorman Long. The legacy that we have left, is there to see from east to west Built on the banks of the Tees. Infant Hercules, he made the town we know today, smoke and fire, and shipyards and the steelworks paved the way. The sky was grey, the air was thick, with chemicals that stick, in the throat and the lungs. The warm orange glow from our industry at night, is home to me, the most comforting of sights From Eston hills I’m looking down, I look with fondness on my town where I was born, I was raised.

Solution

A small town with bigger hearts and voices to be heard, betrayed by the powers who swore to protect and serve. We were made from industry, they’ll not forget our history where I was born, I was raised. We can meet the future, we can write a new page, leave us our identity, stop changing our name. Smoggie til the day I die, I love that haze across the sky where I was born, I was raised. Infant Hercules he must go marching once again, Infant Hercules he must go marching once again, In a different way than was before, let’s pick this town from off the floor, Where I was born, I was raised. They’re great words that can surely provide the necessary impetus for a promotion push. Incidentally, a brand new solo recording by Joseph was released on Friday June 15 ahead of an EP and Joseph’s debut solo headline show this September. It is already featuring in the country charts.
