Seasonal Humour

W

e know it’s the nicest and happiest time of the year, but Christmas and New Year also throw up some humorous little stories. Here are just a few for you to enjoy! It’s probably not true but there’s a story going round that when Good King Wenceslas ordered a pizza he always wanted a ‘deep pan - crisp and even!’

Christmas dinner was great this year,’ said one little girl to another. ‘We had Grandma and Grandad.’ ‘Crikey,’ said her friend. ‘We only had turkey.’

The vicar was walking down the street one Christmas eve when he saw a small boy trying to press the doorbell of a house across the street. Unfortunately the doorbell was too high for him to reach. After watching the boy’s efforts for some time, the vicar walks over to the little fellow and, placing his hand kindly on the child’s shoulder, leaned over and gave the doorbell a solid ring. Crouching down to the little lad’s level, the vicar smiled benevolently and asked, ‘And now what, my little man?’ - to which the little lad grinned broadly and said ‘Now we run like hell!’ Page 14

Daisy and her thirteen-year-old sister Mary had been fighting a great deal during the last year. This often can happen when you combine a strongwilled two-year-old, who is sure she is always right, with a young adolescent. Their parents, trying to take advantage of Daisy’s new found interest in Santa Claus, reminded the two-year-old that Santa was watching and he was unhappy when he saw children argue and fight. This had little impact on Daisy who really didn’t understand. ‘I’ll just have to tell Santa about your misbehaviour,’ the mother said as she picked up the phone and dialled. Daisy‘s eyes grew big as her mother asked, ‘Mrs. Claus?’ (it was really Daisy and Mary’s aunt) can you please put Santa on the line. Daisy’s mouth dropped even further open as her mother described to Santa (the girls’ uncle) how the two-year-old was acting. When her mother told Daisy that Santa wanted to talk to her, she reluctantly took the phone. ‘Santa,’ speaking in a deep voice, explained to her how there would be no presents on Christmas morning for children who fought with their sisters. He would be watching, and he expected things to be better

from now on. Daisy, now even more wide eyed, solemnly nodded to each of Santa’s remarks and silently hung the phone up when he was done. After a short while, her mother (trying hard not to laugh at being so clever) asked Daisy what Santa had to say to her. In almost a whisper, she sadly but matter-of-factly stated, ‘he said he won’t be bringing Mary any toys this year.’

3. My New Year’s resolution is to stop hanging out with people who ask me about my New Year’s resolutions. 4. People treat New Year’s Eve like some sort of life-changing event, but it’s pretty certain to assume that if your life sucked last year, it’s probably still going to suck tomorrow.

5. May all your troubles last as long as your New Year resolutions.....

We know a man who claims that anyone who thinks alcohol is a depressant obviously 6. Again, Dear Lord, my prayer for 2021 is a FAT bank account and a THIN body. Please isn’t drinking enough of it! don’t mix it up again like you did this year.

And finally, some New Year’s Observations:

1. A New Year’s resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other. 2. My New Year’s resolution is to be more optimistic by keeping my cup half-full with either rum, vodka, or whiskey.

7. Remember you don’t have to worry about initially breaking your New Year resolutions. You can re-set them on January 14th (Orthodox New Year) and February 1st (Chinese New Year). Have a wonderful Christmas and very best wishes for 2022.

Christmas

H

SPECIAL THOUGHTS FOR CHRISTMAS ere we are looking at the good feelings that Christmas brings to us all. We’ve found lots of lovely quotes from many different people all associated with the joy that emanates from this most special of seasons and share them with you here. May we also take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year!

out the Santa lie. Maybe I shouldn’t have told them I knew where the presents really came from. It broke their hearts. Laurie Halse Anderson “Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.” Calvin Coolidge

“The main reason Santa is so jolly is because he knows where all the bad girls “The lovely thing about Christmas is that it’s live.” George Carlin compulsory, like a thunderstorm, and we all “Christmas Eve was a night of song that go through it together.” Garrison Keillor wrapped itself about you like a shawl. But it warmed more than your body. It warmed “Christmas is a necessity. There has to be your heart...filled it, too, with melody that at least one day of the year to remind us would last forever.” Bess Streeter Aldrich that we’re here for something else besides ourselves.” Eric Severeid “My idea of Christmas, whether oldfashioned or modern, is very simple: loving “From the baking aisle to the post office others. Come to think of it, why do we have line to the wrapping paper bin in the attic, to wait for Christmas to do that?” Bob Hope women populate every dark corner of “In this modern, politically correct society Christmas. Who got up at 4 a.m. to put the turkey in the oven? A woman. . . . Who Christmas can be celebrated in the school room with pine trees, tinsel and reindeers, sent the Christmas card describing her but there must be no mention of the man eighteen-year-old son’s incarceration as ‘a short break before college?’ A woman. Who whose birthday is being celebrated. One wonders how a teacher would answer if a remembered to include batteries at the student asked why it was called Christmas.” bottom of each stocking? A woman. And Ronald Reagan who gets credit for pulling it all off? Santa. “Our hearts grow tender with childhood That’s right. A man.” Rachel Held Evans memories and love of kindred, and “There is something about Christmas that requires a rug rat. Little kids make Christmas we are better throughout the year for having, in spirit, become a child again at fun. I wonder if could rent one for the Christmastime.” Laura Ingalls Wilder holidays. When I was tiny we would buy a real tree and stay up late drinking hot “The thing about Christmas is that it tells us chocolate and finding just the right place that we are never alone. But even more, it for the special decorations. It seems like my tells us that we are always enough.” Craig parents gave up the magic when I figured D. Lounsbrough Page 20

“What is the spirit of Christmas, you ask? Let me give you the answer in a true story... On a cold day in December, feeling especially warm in my heart for no other reason than it was the holiday season, I walked through the store sporting a big grin on my face. Though most people were far too busy going about their business to notice me, one elderly gentleman in a wheelchair brought his eyes up to meet mine as we neared each other travelling opposite directions. He slowed in passing just long enough to speak to me. “Now that’s a Christmas smile if I ever saw one,” he said. My lips stretched to their limit in response, and I thanked him for the compliment. Then we went our separate ways. But, as I thought about the man and how sweetly he’d touched me, I realized something simply wonderful! In that brief, passing interaction we’d exchanged heartfelt gifts! And that, my friend, is the spirit of Christmas.” Richelle E. Goodrich

And finally, the actual quote from Charles Dickens ‘A Christmas Carol“ where Scrooge’s nephew Fred chastises his uncle on his opinion that Christmas is a humbug....

“Christmas, children, is not a date. It is a state of mind.” Mary Ellen Chase

“Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.” Norman Vincent Peale

But I am sure I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round—apart from the veneration due to its sacred name and origin, if anything belonging to it can be apart from that—as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shutup hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellowpassengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys.

“Blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love.” Hamilton Wright Mabie

And therefore, uncle, though it has never put a scrap of gold or silver in my pocket, I believe that it has done me good, and will do me good; and I say, God bless it!” Well said Fred!

Carefully distributed by Famous Flyers | December 2021

“There are many things from which I might have derived good, by which I have not profited, I dare say,’ returned the nephew. ‘Christmas among the rest.

In The Garden

A

s Christmas approaches, our to-do lists don’t often contain gardening tasks at this time of year. Luckily, you can take it a little easier this month without any risk to your garden; maintenance is the most important thing until spring. Of course, if you are looking to keep up the pace of your gardening, don’t worry, there are still plenty of smaller jobs to do! Clearing borders of dead or dying plants helps create tidy displays, showing off those still in bloom. The spent debris makes a great soil improver for next year, so get it rotting down. Prune harshly to improve the shape of your trees and shrubs, look out for flaws such as split or broken branches, and make sure you cut them back so they are healthier next year. Don’t rely on bought garden compost; it’s the perfect time of year to create your own! Keep any plant cuttings and kitchen scraps, mix them together and allow them to rot down ready to be used next spring. Leaves and manure are great for creating Page 22

an alternative to compost; leaf mould can act as soil coverage during those harsh winter months and manure can be rotted down and used to rejuvenate your soil with nutrients. If you’re looking for something a little more natural, green manures like clover or rye are great for improving soil nature’s way! Mulch requires very little work, and is great for applying to the roots of established or flowering plants. Let earth worms do all the hard work; they will eventually drag and blend the mulch into top soil. Don’t let ivy be a pest; it may seem like any other climbing plant usefully covering your bare walls and fences. Unfortunately no matter how much you try and keep it in bounds, ivy always has a way of escaping! It has a habit of smothering other plants and annoying neighbours, so make sure you keep cutting back those escaping shoots or get rid of it altogether. Be aware of pests and diseases, one of the most prevalent diseases this time of year is root rot. Stop root rot by placing pots in the rain shadow of a wall or fence and lift them off the ground on pot feet or large stones to let the moisture drain out. Prevent falling leaves from going near the base of your roses to stop the spreading of rose black spot. Take hardwood cuttings. Propagate a wide range of fruits trees and shrubs by taking hardwood cuttings from healthy plants in winter.

Protection

December is all about protection for your plants and garden wildlife. Protect ponds by catching any fallen leaves with a small net and trimming off any dying or tatty foliage so they don’t pollute the water. You may wake up on those winter mornings to find your pond covered in ice, fish can withstand such low temperatures but can’t survive too much in the water. Float a tennis ball on the surface to stop ice taking over your pond and keep your fish and pond wildlife safe! If you are extremely worried about some

of your tender plants, the best thing to do is move them inside when the weather becomes more severe. The cold weather doesn’t just affect your plants, don’t let your containers crack as the frost starts to set in, wrap them with bubble polythene or fleece. If you have lots of containers pack them together and wrap protection around as a group. Your garden furniture is also at risk, cover furniture with polythene sheeting to protect it from becoming damp and possibly rusty. Remember to replenish and add water for birds to drink out of. Watch out for bird nests when pruning. Many gardeners assume that birds aren’t hungry when they look plump; birds actually fluff up their feathers to minimize the loss of heat from their bodies when they are seriously hungry.

INSIDER SECRETS! 3 Ways To Measure The Success Of Your Printed Ad

Y

ou want to grow your business, so you’ve decided to place an ad in a local publication. But how will you know if the campaign has been successful? Only by knowing what works and what doesn’t will you be able to truly measure the impact of your ad. We’ve tapped into our years of experience to put together the following guide that will help you to create a measurable printed ad:

Tip #1

Make sure it can actually be measured

Your ad should include messaging that asks the consumer to perform an action or provide a response.

Use a powerful call to action that will prompt them to do something specific, such as calling a number to redeem an offer.

Be sure to mention the benefit they’ll get from responding so they feel like it will be worthwhile! Page 26

Tip #2

Create an ad unique to the Local Answer

Rather than using the same campaign that you’re running elsewhere, making an ad that’s specific to the advertising magazine makes it easier to measure and gives a more honest idea of how well it’s working for you. Here are a few ways to do this:

• Promote a particular service or product that you don’t really advertise elsewhere • You could set up a bespoke phone number to be used only for this ad • Create a page on your website specifically for Local Answer readers. Tailor the content of this page so that it’s in-line with the messaging in the ad so that the customer journey flows well and is uninterrupted • Consider offering an exclusive Local Answer discount code that the audience needs to quote. This way, you know they’ve come to you through seeing the printed ad. December 2021 | local-answer.co.uk | Tel: 07525 856882

See Page 30 for our INDEX OF ADVERTISERS

Tip #3

Get your testing hat on Don’t be afraid to brainstorm and come up with a few different ad concepts. Think about two or three variations of an ad and have a slight change in each version. We’d recommend only changing one aspect of each ad so that you can easily identify which element is effective. You can then run the ads in consecutive issues of an advertising magazine, like the Local Answer, and see which one achieved the most enquiries/sales. Finally By implementing some of these approaches, you’ll be able to monitor the performance of your ad.

If you’d like more information about the Local Answer, we’d really love to hear from you. Contact Yvette on 07525 856882, Monday to Thursday, 9am to 3pm.

Football - The 'Boro

IT HAD TO BE DONE, BUT THE METHOD WASN'T GREAT!

I

t was strange that after the morning’s bizarre events at West Brom the ‘Boro team played that afternoon with focus, conviction and no lack of skill and were perhaps unlucky to come away without actually winning the game. But it was their actions at the end of the match that spoke most genuinely about their sympathy and affection towards their newly sacked manager, news they had only heard an hour before the commencement of the game. Their decision to lead him over to the ‘Boro fans to give them a final opportunity to thank Neil Warnock for all the hard work and difficult situations he had endured – albeit with a smile on his face over the previous Covid filled year and a half was impressive. But though in the light of Warnock’s apparent intention to resign at the end of this season - and the sudden necessity to bring in Chris Wilder before someone else snapped him up - the timing was probably right. The way it was done, however, leaves a lot to be desired. Yes, we needed to look ahead beyond this season and create a more positive approach to the future than was currently being shown, but while the decision was probably a correct one I for one have a bad feeling about Page 28

the Chairman’s methods. I look back several years to the night we’d just beaten Derby 2-0 to go into the top three of the Championship. I arrived home reasonably content after my twenty five mile trip to get the surprising news on Sky Sports of Gareth Southgate’s sacking immediately after the game. The fact that Strachan was brought in so quickly made it obvious it had been a fait accompli and Gareth was the victim of a ruthless management decision. The fact we didn’t win another game for some thirteen matches under Strachan – and the impressive CV of Southgate since – showed it was a bad move and even more so when the appointment proved ultimately to be extremely damaging. Chris Wilder’s prospective arrival hadn’t exactly been a secret over the last couple of weeks either, but to allow Neil Warnock to take his team to West Brom and then inform him at ten o clock on the morning of the game that his services were no longer required seems a very similar scenario to the Southgate episode. I just hope we don’t live to regret it quite as much as we did that time. Since then, of course, we’ve listened to a number of press conferences in which Chris Wilder has made all the usual noises about the future and what he hopes to achieve

December 2021 | local-answer.co.uk | Tel: 07525 856882

– it would be strange if he hadn’t said those things really. It also became obvious, incidentally, that future press conferences are going to be infinitely less humorous and a lot less interesting than they have been of late! And while the first half against Millwall looked to be something of an improvement in terms of formation and attacking intention, the way the team – both teams actually – faded in the second half was something of a disappointment. But it’s early days and there are still plenty of games to go to give the squad a chance to take on Wilder’s ideas and formulations and in terms of goal scoring I don’t think we’ve seen the full potential that this team actually offers. As I write it’s Preston on Tuesday night and that is surely a game we should be winning if we have any real prospect of climbing the table and offering a challenge. One of Chris Wilder’s main points was that we still

See Page 30 for our INDEX OF ADVERTISERS

have the January transfer window to come, but since that’s a notoriously bad time to try and make an impact in the market one wonders whether Kieran Scott’s influence is going to come to the fore. Does he realise that attracting players to the frozen north in the middle of winter is not an easy task! We’ve had plenty of so called exciting times in the past and this could well be another judging by the Sheffield United statistics under Wilder but I think this is a moment when we should wait and see without getting too carried away. As we saw in October, a few decent results could change everything very quickly. Conversely, as in November, a few bad ones can have exactly the opposite effect. The next couple of months are going to be very interesting indeed! In the meantime, have a great Christmas and a very happy and hopefully winning New Year!
