Prune climbing and rambler roses once they have finished flowering unless they are a repeat flowering variety or have attractive hips. Towards the end of the month sow hardy annual seeds directly into the borders to over winter and produce earlier blooms the following spring. Keep on top of the weeds with regular hoeing of annual weeds but use a glyphosate based weedkiller for perennial weeds to kill the roots as well as the leaves. Give hedges their final trim of the year. Top up water features and ponds and aerate the water during very hot weather.

Healthy Eating LEMON MERINGUE PIE

f you eat healthily most of the time, you can afford to give yourself a treat now and then, that is when I make this delicious Lemon Meringue Pie. There are not many ingredients and it’s easy to make. You can make your own shortcrust pastry or buy shop bought.

Recipe Pastry: 6oz plain flour, 3oz butter (or margarine), water to bind. Filling: 2 large lemons (with the zest and juice separated), 10 fluid oz water, 3 tablespoons cornflour, 2oz sugar, 2 large egg yolks, 1½ oz butter or margarine Topping: 2 large egg whites, 4oz sugar To make the pastry, rub the butter into the flour until in resembles breadcrumbs. Add water bit by bit until you have a firm dough. Roll out the pastry to fit a pie/flan tin. Heat the oven to gas mark 6. Bake the pastry blind (this means putting greaseproof paper over the pastry and adding some baking beans so that the pastry doesn’t shrink or bubble up), bake it for 10 mins with paper on and then 10 mins with the paper and beans taken out. Take it out of the oven and reduce to oven heat to gas mark 2.

Make the filling – mix the cornflour, sugar and some of the water to a paste. Set aside. Pour the rest of the water and lemon zest into a pan, heat to boiling and then pour in the cornflour mixture – stirring rapidly so no lumps are formed. Heat for 1 minute. Remove from the heat and whisk in the egg yolk, lemon and butter. Spread this into the pastry case. Make the topping – whisk egg whites and sugar until it forms stiff peaks. Put the topping into the flan case on top of the filling, use the back of a spoon to tap on the topping to form little peaks. Cook for 45 minutes. ‘Healthy Eating’ courtesy of Sue Lorrimer.

THE EUROS WAS A GREAT TASTER BUT NOW FOR THE REAL THING!

o many emotions… excitement, anticipation, pride, anguish and ultimately - and perhaps inevitably - disappointment. The Euros had them all and a lot more besides, but the team gave us a lot of pleasure over the four weeks and performances up to – and including – the final can be seen as a positive stepping stone on the way to hopefully greater things next year. Sadly, though, it was once again the ignorant and disgusting minority that became the major topic of conversation when it was all over. There was little doubt that after sixteen months of enforced lockdown these utter morons were going to emerge and create the kind of troubled scenes we had to endure at the final. But with almost fifty arrests we can only hope the authorities have the courage to make a vivid example with at the very least life bans from football. The correct punishment would hopefully show the rest of their

peers that decent people despise their twisted attitudes. Sadly, though, history will probably show they once again got away with it. We can, however, hope! At ‘Boro, meanwhile, we have at least seen a little bit of progress in the attempt to rebuild the side for hopefully a competitive season, and though it might only have been Bishop Auckland, new striker Uche Ikpeazu’s goal in his first match must surely have given fans a glimpse of what might be if he can show that kind of shooting power when we kick off in earnest at Fulham. Combine Ikpeazu’s goal with the only ‘Boro goal we’ve seen from another potentially exciting recruit – Sammy Ameobi – and we have a couple of possible match winners. They are, however, the kind of low value signings that are indicative of the current financial restraints not only at ‘Boro but also throughout the football league. But Neil Warnock’s ability to attract free or bargain basement players who
