This will give some fresh foliage and maybe more flowers. Put houseplants out in the garden for their ‘summer holiday’. Remember to take them back in during September before any frosts. Once there has been a dry spell, give a coat of colour/preservative to fences, sheds and decking.

Rhododendrons, lilacs and hydrangeas can be dead headed but be careful not to cut too far back, merely taking just the blooms. Hoe off any annual weeds but perennial weeds should be dug out making sure you take out all the root. Keep hostas and other tender plants safe from slugs and snails. You can get a slug killer that is not harmful to wildlife or you can use beer traps, crushed egg shells or used coffee grounds. Keep hanging baskets, containers and any newly planted shrubs or perennials well watered. Take time out not only to walk round the garden hopefully every day to keep an eye on everything but most importantly sit and enjoy!
Lawns Mow the lawn more often now, usually at least once a week and reduce the cutting height if the weather is not too hot. If you have any movable features on the

If you have not already weeded and fed the lawn it is still not too late to apply a combined weed and feed. A new lawn should be watered in dry spells to stop the turf from shrinking and failing to knit together and also water seed sown lawns to encourage growth. If you have a lot of grass clippings put them on the compost heap in stages so that the compost does not go slimy.

Place netting supported by raised canes to protect fruit from birds if you don’t yet have a fruit cage. After the June drop of apple trees, if the apples still look too crowded thin them out to give better sized fruits that will ripen all the way round. Keep picking rhubarb so that it does not have a chance to go to seed. Train in the new canes of raspberries and blackberries by tying them in to say the left whilst the older canes are pulled to the right. Early potatoes should be ready to dig now and maincrop ones will need earthing up. Sow more lettuce, radish and beetroot in succession through the month. Train tomato plants as they grow and pinch out the side shoots from cordon grown ones. Run string attached at each end to posts to support broad beans as they grow and pinch out the growing tips to discourage black fly. Keep all vegetable growing areas free from weeds.

THE POWER OF WORDS REALLY CAN RESOLVE AWKWARD SITUATIONS!
S
ometimes, even the most difficult situations can be resolved with just a few cleverly chosen and well expressed words. Here are a few wonderful examples...
I recently picked up a hitch-hiker. He seemed like a nice enough bloke but once he was in the car I realised he had terrible body odour and immediately regretted giving him a lift. After a couple of miles he said he was grateful for the lift but asked me if I wasn’t afraid that he might be a serial killer? I told him that the odds of two serial killers being in the same car at the same time was extremely unlikely. Fortunately he jumped out the next time I had to stop! An elderly man in Queensland had owned a large property for several years. He had a dam in one of the lower paddocks where he had planted mango and avocado trees. The dam had been fixed up for swimming when it was built and he also had some picnic tables placed there in the shade of the fruit trees. One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the dam to look it over, as he hadn’t been there for a while. He grabbed a 10 litre bucket to bring back some fruit. As he neared the dam, he heard voices shouting and laughing. As
he came closer he saw it was four young women skinny-dipping in his dam. He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end. One of the women shouted to him, ‘We know why you’re here and we’re not coming out until you leave.’ The old man frowned and said,’ Maam, I didn’t come down here to watch you ladies swim naked or try to make you get out of the dam naked.’ Holding the bucket up he said, ‘I’m only here to feed the crocodiles.’ Moral: Old men may walk slowly, but they can still think fast. A smarty-pants London lawyer runs a stop sign and gets pulled over by a Glasgow cop. He thinks that he’s smarter than the cop because he is a lawyer from London and is certain that he has a better education then any Jock cop. He decides to prove this to himself and have some fun at the Glasgow cop’s expense!! Glasgow cop says, “ Licence and registration, please.” London Lawyer says, “What for?” Glasgow cop says, “Ye didnae come to a complete stop at the stop sign.” London Lawyer says, “I slowed down, and no one was coming.”Glasgow cop says, “Ye still didnae come to a complete stop. The Glasgow cop takes out his baton and starts beating the living daylights out of the lawyer and then says, “Dae ye want me to stop, or just slow doon?” One evening, after the honeymoon, Tom was working on his motorcycle in the garage. His new wife was standing there by the bench watching him. After a long period of silence she finally said, “Honey, I’ve just been thinking, now that
we are married, maybe it’s time you quit spending so much of your time out here in your garage. You probably should also consider selling your Harley and all your welding equipment along with your gun collection, your fishing gear, the boat and all those stupid model airplanes, plus dump that vintage hot rod sports car and your home brewing equipment.” Tom got a horrified look on his face. She said, “Darling, what’s wrong?”He replied, “There for a minute, you were starting to sound like my ex-wife!” “Ex-wife!?” she screamed, “YOU NEVER TOLD ME YOU WERE MARRIED BEFORE!” Tom replied, “I wasn’t.” The right words really can be so important!

SPICY GRILLED CHICKEN (OR QUORN FILLET) WRAPS
O
n days where you don’t feel like cooking or just fancy something easy and healthy, try these spicy wraps. You need to make the marinade 2 hours ahead or you can even make it the night before and leave it in the fridge until you’re ready to make the recipe. When you’re ready to make it, the recipe only takes around 20 minutes. Chicken is low fat and a good source of protein, if you’re vegetarian, quorn is also good for protein, low fat and a source of fibre. The spices used in the recipe can be found in your local Indian grocery store: fenugreek, cumin and fennel are all good for your digestive system. RECIPE 2 tsp fenugreek seeds, 2 tsp fennel seeds, 2 tsp cumin seeds, 2 garlic cloves finely chopped, 1 tsp cayenne pepper or paprika, grated zest and juice of 1 lemon, tsp salt, 2 tablespoon greek style natural yogurt (optional), 4 skinless boneless chicken
fillets (about 6oz each) or 6 quorn fillets, 2 tablespoons olive oil, black pepper Heat a frying pan over low heat until hot. Add the fenugreek, fennel and cumin seeds and toast for 2-3 minutes (don’t burn) until they give off an aroma. Cool then crush in a pestle and mortar or grind in a coffee grinder. Tip into a bowl and add garlic, cayenne/ paprika, lemon zest, 2 tablespoons lemon juice, teaspoon of salt and yogurt if using. Slash the chicken or quorn all over using a sharp knife and put into a dish. Rub this marinade all over, cover and leave in the fridge for 2 hours or overnight. When ready to eat, heat the grill and put foil on baking tray. Drizzle the marinated chicken or quorn with olive oil. Grill till cooked (20 minutes for chicken, less for quorn), turning halfway through. When cool, tear into shreds and serve in wraps drizzled with yogurt (or tahini sauce if using quorn and vegetarian), with slices of tomato and lettuce.

GOOD RECRUITMENT WILL BE THE VITAL FACTOR
W
hile it’s always tempting to listen to and believe the latest hot news regarding imminent signings, we ‘Boro fans have suffered enough disappointments over the years to take everything with a pinch of salt until the time we actually see a player take the field in a ‘Boro shirt. I well remember the excitement that accompanied the news in 2013 that Argentinian star Diego Forlan was on a plane to Heathrow and had agreed terms to join ‘Boro. He was, of course, hijacked at the airport by Alex Ferguson so joined Manchester United instead. We also understood - in 2008 - that Rob Lee was on his way north from Kings Cross to sign for ‘Boro, but he eventually stayed on the train and was signed instead by Kevin Keegan at Newcastle. Keegan always reckoned he’d fooled Lee into thinking that Newcastle was closer to London than Middlesbrough but Lee refutes the slur, claiming it was because Newcastle airport would get him back to the East End a lot quicker! But now the latest in this long line of duff information was the fairly convincing news recently that Luton’s out of contract striker
James Collins was about to sign an early contract to get our recruitment drive off to a healthy start. Sadly - and inevitably - that conviction lasted for about 24 hours before the news filtered through that he was heading for Cardiff instead. The biggest difficulty at the moment is that because of the fairly universal financial difficulties facing clubs, the better players are holding on for the best offers available and since lucrative deals are few and far between - and certainly not available at Middlesbrough at the moment - it’s going to be even more difficult to attract early signings of any significance. So despite Neil Warnock’s pre-holiday assertion that he would be trying to get players in as quickly as possible, the truth is that players of the right quality are not going to be making any quick decisions. Perhaps the main current issue, however, is the forthcoming Euro Championships when most of the big clubs will be waiting and watching with interest in case a few gems are suddenly uncovered during the tournament. If so it will then lead to some big transfers and the subsequent player merry-go-round that usually results. Sadly, if ‘Boro are to benefit from that

So, with an action packed summer to look forward to we should be easily able to forget the disappointing end to the season where ‘Boro sadly lost momentum and ended up in a safe mid table spot. After last season, though, that was something of a relief. That it has been a huge improvement under Warnock is undeniable and can only give us hope that he can maintain that improvement for next season and give us a challenging one to look forward to. But it all depends on the recruitment and I’m afraid recent history does not foster a great deal of encouragement in that department. We can only hope! Enjoy the Euros and come on England! It has to be the best squad we’ve been able to put out for quite some time so it should hopefully be something we can all enjoy. Have a great summer.
