lear the last of the winter bedding from containers and borders and, if you have not grown your own, buy new summer bedding for planting out once all fear of frost has past. Once the fear of frosts has passed you can put out your hanging baskets and patio tubs full of summer bedding plants. Continue to dead head any remaining daffodils and tulips but do not take off the foliage until it is brown and then feed with a liquid fertilizer. Mow on a regularly basis, lowering the height of cut gradually but raise it again during any prolonged dry spells. If you haven’t already fed your lawn this spring, give it a feed of a high nitrogen lawn fertilizer to keep it looking green.

Fruit and Vegetables
Put nets over any fruits that are about to ripen to stop the birds eating them. Remove any strawberry runners so the plants put all their energy into producing fruit. If a late frost is forecast cover stone fruits with a fleece at night but remove in the morning so that pollinating insects have free access. Make sure that any fruit trained against a wall or fence receive enough water during the fruit development stage. Plants can be in a rain shadow when up against a tall structure and will need extra watering. To keep the codling moth from your apple trees hang pheromone traps amongst the trees. Continue with successional sowings of salad crops. Sow the seeds of Runner and French beans into prepared rows outside or train then up wigwams if you have less room. If you have not grown your own vegetables from seed you can buy small plug plants cheaply now and fill your garden with these. If you don’t have a dedicated vegetable bed there are many attractive vegetables such as lollo rosso lettuce, swiss chard and even runner beans that look really good placed between flowering plants as they did in the old days to make a real cottage garden.
Wildlife
Be careful when cutting hedges that there is not a bird’s nest in there being used at the moment. If there is leave the hedge uncut until the fledglings have flown the nest. Neither the birds nor the hedge will suffer. Keep the bird bath clean and topped up with fresh water. Keep feeding the birds but make sure there are no large pieces that the mothers could take back to the chicks and choke them. If you would like to attract the summer visiting birds such as swifts and housemartins you can buy special nesting boxes to put up in the garden. Swallows will make their own nests.

e’re known in this country to be a nation of animal lovers and we certainly show a hugely loving and sympathetic attitude to most of them - especially the more cuddly varieties. To celebrate that trait amongst the majority of typical Brits, we’ve put together a few nice little tales that might amuse you. Enjoy! A baby camel goes to see his mother and asks her “Mummy, why do we have a hump on our back? “ His mother replies “It’s so we can store water so we won’t dehydrate during those long hot summers when we don’t get any rain my darling.” The baby camel then asks “And why do we have hooves?” “Ah,” said his mother,” it’s so we can safely walk along all the really rocky paths without hurting our feet.” “And why do we have big eyelids?” asks the baby. “It’s to prevent the sand from entering our eyes when it blows from the desert.” replies the mother “Oh, Ok” says the baby, and looking round he says “But Mummy, what good is all that to us in Chester Zoo?” Then there’s the little polar bear who approached his parents and asked ‘Mummy, Daddy, am I really a polar bear?’ ‘Of course you are darling,’ said his mother. A couple of days later he again approached them and said ‘I know I’ve already asked you this but am I really, really a polar bear?’ ‘Yes,’ of course you are,’ answered
his father. Why do you keep asking? ‘Because,’ said the little fellow, ‘I’m bloody freezing.’ A dog walks into a butcher shop and the butcher asks, “What do you want?” The dog points to steak in a glass case. “How many pounds?” The dog barks twice. “Anything else?” The dog points to some pork chops and barks four times. So the butcher wraps up a two-pound steak and four pork chops, and places the bag in the dog’s mouth. He then takes money from a purse tied around the dog’s neck, and sees him out. A customer, who has been watching in amazement, follows the dog to a house several blocks away, where it rings the doorbell to be let in. As the owner appears at the door, the customer says, “What a remarkable dog!” “Remarkable?” snorts the owner. “This is the second time this week he’s forgotten his keys.” Late one night a burglar broke into a house and while he was sneaking around he heard a voice say, “Jesus is watching you.” He looked around and saw nothing. He kept on creeping and again heard, “Jesus is watching you.” In a dark corner, he saw a cage with a parrot inside. The burglar asked the parrot, “Was it you who said Jesus is watching me” The parrot replied, “Yes.” Relieved, the burglar asked, “What is your name?” The parrot said, “Clarence.” The burglar said, “That’s a stupid name for a parrot. Healthy Eating
VEGAN BANANA BREAD
W
ith many people going vegan for a variety of reasons such as health, the environment and animal welfare, it’s sometimes difficult to find nice dessert or cake recipes which don’t use milk or eggs. This banana bread is quick and easy to make and uses sunflower oil instead of marg or butter, and either soya or almond milk instead of cows milk, plus it’s really nice! Ingredients: 200g plain flour, 100g wholemeal flour (or 50g wholemeal flour and 50g fine cornmeal), 2 teaspoons baking powder, ½ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda, 100g light brown sugar, 150ml soya or almond milk,
3 ripe bananas, 1 teaspoon cider vinegar, 80ml sunflower oil, 100g walnuts. Preheat the oven to gas mark 4 and grease a 2lb loaf tin. Mix the flours, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda and sugar in a large bowl. Mash the bananas to a pulp and mix in the milk, cider vinegar and oil. Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients and pour in the banana mixture. Chop half the walnuts and add. Transfer to the loaf tin and press the remaining walnuts into the top. Cook for 50 minutes (or until a knife inserted into the loaf comes out clean). Leave to cool for a while then remove from the tin.

FOOTBALL - THE ONLY INDUSTRY WHERE FAILURE, INADEQUECY AND DISLOYALTY CAN STILL BRING FINANCIAL SUCCESS
I
s it really only five or six weeks since there was still a belief that ‘Boro’s squad had the sort of potential that meant one or two astute signings could lead to a successful 2021/22 season or have we imagined it? Within that time a run of one point from fifteen - only halted by a scrappy 2-1 victory over ten man relegation certainties Rotherham – has brought the real truth to the fore that we have players who simply don’t want to be at ‘Boro and players who do but probably aren’t good enough. The few who do want to be here and are actually good enough are unfortunately the minority and that fact brings little or no confidence that next season is going to be any different to this one. We’ve known for a long time, of course, that football is the only industry in the world where huge amounts of money can be made from a combination of disloyalty, inadequacy and non-cooperation and perhaps there is no better example of that than the eventual realisation that neither Britt Assombalonga nor Ashley Fletcher have been anywhere close to value for money. Between them they have cost the club something like thirty million pounds over the last two seasons and now both have been rightly dispensed with. From a ‘Boro fan’s point
of view they have been complete failures, but I’m sure in their own weird assessment of the past two seasons they must consider themselves – from a financial point of view anyway - to have been pretty successful. I’m sure most of us realise that if we had been as unreliable in our jobs as they have in theirs we would have been dispensed with long ago and there certainly wouldn’t have been any golden handshakes to accompany our departure. In the meantime, the arrogance of owners of top Premiership clubs came home to roost with the ridiculous concept of a closed shop super league that fans were supposed to sit back and accept. The furore that greeted the announcement at least showed that fans aren’t as gullible as these people believed and they have had to withdraw, hopefully forever, from the disgraceful attempt to extract even more money from an industry that has become more and more one-sided since the formation of the Premier league some thirty years ago. From a Middlesbrough point of view, though, most of us appreciate the unbelievable contribution Steve Gibson has made during that time by almost single handedly financing ‘Boro through the good times and the bad. And yet there are still the idiots on social media who suggest he should continue to spend huge amounts of money when football’s finances

who may become available during the summer would probably prefer other more hospitable climates than ours. The outsider’s conception of Middlesbrough unfortunately bears little resemblance to the beauty and value that actually exists in the North East but that is a problem we’ve always faced. I’ve met many people who have actually made the move and been astounded to find a much different area to the one they believed they were coming to. Sadly, you have to get them here first! So all we can hope is that Warnock can use his exceptional experience to attract a few players who can make a difference and give us a good season next time around. To be fair, this one has been a considerable improvement on last year so if that can be maintained we can hopefully enjoy being back in the stadium once more when the season begins. Having to watch games ‘on the box’ is really no substitute for the excitement of match days and I for one can’t wait to give Neil Warnock the true Riverside experience. Let’s hope it can finally happen! Have a good summer!

It’s amazing what four defeats from five games can do to people’s conceptions. So, with the huge anti climax this season has become, where do we go from here? Warnock’s belief that we have to get people over the line quickly with a few ‘handshakes and promises’ early in the transfer window is all well and good but where are we going to find the kind of talent on the sort of budget we obviously have to make a big difference? Let’s be honest, our recruitment over the past few seasons doesn’t exactly breed confidence. Unfortunately, being stuck out here in the conceived ‘wilderness’ of the North East is perhaps the biggest problem the recruitment team faces because the very few good players
