ou will always find the odd shrub that you have not pruned, such as Buddleia, Caryopteris, Hydrangea and some of the Winter flowering shrubs that have finished flowering can be pruned now. Late March is a good time to carry out pruning on Evergreen shrubs that may have suffered frost damage such as Hebes with the young growing tips scorched by frost. Never prune members of the Daphne family as they dislike pruning. Some climbing shrubs such as Jasminum and Chaenomeles can be pruned immediately after flowering. All rose pruning should be completed by mid March.
Lawns Work on the lawn really begins this month. As soon as the grass has started to grow and the weather and ground conditions
are favourable, rake the lawn to remove leaves and surface rubbish. Do not rake too vigorously at this stage or you will damage the grass. The first cut should merely remove the top of the grass - close cutting at this stage will result in the grass yellowing. Choose a day when the surface of the lawn is dry. It is the time to apply the first moss kill of the season. Choose a period in the month when the weather is mild, when the grass is dry and frost free. Avoid mowing the lawn three days before and at least four days after treatment. You may have to retreat the lawn in four to six weeks time to eradicate all the moss. It is important not to get any moss killing chemical on to any shrubs or tender plants planted in borders around the lawn. Do not compost grass clippings from the

Herbaceous Border Unlike so many bulbous rooted plants, Snowdrops can be lifted and divided as soon as the flowers fade. It is advisable to lift and replant in this way every few years. If the bulbs are too closely packed together, many may fail to flower in future years. Always plan your borders before you begin planting and plant in groups for maximum colour effect. Single plants give a less effective display. Many established herbaceous plants will be growing lots of young growth now, you may need to thin out some of the growth. Cuttings can be taken of some plants such as Delphiniums, Phlox, Lupins and Penstemons. These cuttings will need the protection of a glasshouse or frame. As the weather improves with warmer days some of the hardier annual seeds can be sown now directly into the garden.
Fruit Garden Plums and Damsons will be coming into flower this month. When these and the blackthorn in the hedgerows show their first white flowers, country folk take it as a sign of a cold spell which is called a “Blackthorn Winter”. Peach, Nectarines and Apricot trees growing on walls will also come into flower now. This time of year there are few insects flying about so hand pollination with a small artists paint brush will aid pollination and lead to a bigger fruit yield, simply brush the pollen from one flower to another. Raspberries will benefit from a mulch of well-rotted manure not only to feed the plants but also protect the roots and keep them moist. As Apples, Pears and Plums come into leaf watch for the first signs of insect damage, spray as soon as pests appear. It is very important not to spray any insecticide or fungicide whilst fruit trees are in flower, wait until flowering has finished.

SALMON FISHCAKES WITH SALSA VERDE INGREDIENTS 600g/1lb 5oz salmon fillet salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 big floury potatoes, cooked 1 medium red onions, finely diced 2 handfuls chopped parsley 1 lemon, juice only flour, for dusting
For the Salsa Verde 25g/2oz white breadcrumbs 1 tbsp of red wine vinegar basil, small bunch flat-leaved parsley, small bunch
2 garlic cloves, chopped ½ tsp salt and freshly ground black pepper 60ml/4fl oz olive oil 1 tbsp salted capers, rinsed Cooking Time: 40 mins Serves: 2
METHOD This is a bit different as the salsa verde is mixed into the fishcakes but go with it, they taste amazing. To make the Salsa Verde, soak the breadcrumbs in the vinegar briefly, then put into a food processor with the herbs, garlic and seasoning. Process briefly to a coarse paste. With the motor running, add the

olive oil a little at a time, until it is all incorporated. Add the capers and blitz for 2 seconds (literally press the switch on and off, to preserve the texture). Next cook the potato and mash them before placing in a bowl and allowing to cool. Poach the salmon for about 5 mins in a pan of simmering milk or water before turning off the heat and leaving in the pan with the lid on for a further five mins. Strain the liquid and flake the fish into the bowl with the potato, add finely chopped onion, parsley, the salsa verde, lemon juice and seasoning. Mix well, at this stage it might be useful to fry off a small piece to taste for seasoning. If the mixture is too wet add some flour or breadcrumbs; shape the mixture into 4 fishcakes and dust with flour. Place in the fridge for half an hour, this will help them keep their shape when cooking. Shallow fry until golden brown on both sides, serve your Salmon fishcakes with salsa verde on a bed of salad.

Football - The ‘Boro
IT’S AN EMOTIONAL BUSINESS BEING A ‘BORO FAN!
I
t’s now almost sixty years since I saw my first Middlesbrough game - a 1-1 draw against Plymouth Argyle in which ‘Boro keeper Bob Appleby saved a penalty. My family lived near Durham City then but my parents were both from the Pickering / Rosedale area of North Yorkshire and every holiday we ever had began with a five hour bus trip from home to Pickering. Part of those five hours was always a half hour wait in Middlesbrough bus station for the next stage of the trip to Helmsley, and as a little lad at the time I was always fascinated by a huge Northern Echo poster acclaiming the pictured Middlesbrough football team to be ‘The Pride of the North.’ At school in the Durham area, of course, everyone either supported Sunderland or Newcastle so my assertion that I was a Middlesbrough fan led to considerable scorn from friends and classmates. I have since had many opportunities to get my own back, especially as ‘Boro remain the last team to win a major trophy -albeit sixteen years ago! I’m telling you this because I have often surprised myself that my resilience as a ‘Boro fan has been sustained despite many occasions like the present when we have not performed anywhere near
our potential and the dreaded drop once again looms. As I write, our next two challenges are Leeds and Nottingham Forest and since we’ve just taken one point from the games against the bottom three in the division, playing those at the top does not augur well for our chance to stay adrift of the relegation places. One thing those sixty years have taught me, however, is that you can never rely on Middlesbrough to do what you expect, so a couple of good results against these promotion contenders would not surprise me at all. It was fairly inevitable after being forced to play midfielders at centre back and kids in other important positions that Jonathan Woodgate would revert to his more experienced players once they proved their fitness but that most certainly backfired when we were faced with the ‘six pointers against Wigan, Luton and Barnsley in which it is difficult to remember a clear cut ‘Boro chance or indeed a shot on target. Sloppy defending in each of the games led to the opposition goals and while it’s always hard to blame the Manager for individual player errors, Jonathan Woodgate is going to have to

ensure that the performances over the festive period can be resurrected and we can once again stop looking nervously over our shoulders. I suppose the only good thing to be gained from looking back at ‘Boro’s history shows that our only previous dips into what is now known as League One in 1966 and 1986 only lasted a single season each and became a catalyst for much improved and more enjoyable periods as a Middlesbrough supporter. I obviously hope it doesn’t come to that, though, and that Jonathan Woodgate can work the oracle and deliver us into the realms of safety over the next few weeks. I remain a fan of his regardless of recent result but the knives are out once again and he and his team have simply got to return to winning ways sooner rather than later. I wait with baited breath!
