R
egularly remove any fallen leaves from borders and lawns to prevent the spread of over wintering pests and diseases. If you have a greenhouse clear it out and give it a good clean. Remove any painted glass shading and install plastic bubble wrap for insulation. Remove any remaining summer bedding from both containers and borders and replace with plants such as pansies, bellis and wallflowers that will see you through to the spring. Pot up prepared hyacinth bulbs to have flowers at Christmas and New Year. Make sure all planted containers are raised off the ground with pot feet so that they drain well in rainy weather. Continue to plant spring flowering bulbs, except tulips, so that you have a succession of flowers. If you choose the right varieties you can have bulbs in flower from January to May. Net your pond to prevent falling leaves going in and decomposing in the water. Prune bush roses by half to prevent them rocking in very windy weather which can loosen them at their roots. Also prune climbing roses now.
Lawns Keep as many leaves off the lawn as possible to prevent them blocking out light and air and damaging the grass. This is the last chance to scarify, aerate and top dress the lawn if it was not done in September. If the weather is very wet keep off the lawn as much as possible. If the grass is still growing it is fine to carry on mowing.
Fruit and Vegetables Lift and divide old rhubarb crowns that are more than five years old. Make sure that all the divisions have two or more fat pink buds. After preparing the ground really well you can plant new fruit trees and bushes now. Prune out any diseased or dead shoots on apple and pear trees and collect any fallen fruits or dead fruits on the trees. It is important to maintain hygiene in the fruit garden to prevent the spread of diseases. Remove yellow foliage and unwanted runners from strawberry plants and also any plants that look as if they are diseased. Sow over wintering broad beans. It helps if you can cover them with fleece to stop pigeons getting at them.

Clear your old pea and bean plants by cutting off the tops to add to the compost heap. The roots can be dug back into the ground to provide extra nitrogen to the soil. Dig over any vacant areas of the vegetable garden and leave for the frost to break down the clods into finer particles.
Wildlife Always keep your bird bath clean and topped up with fresh water. If there is a very cold spell and the water is frozen over it is very important to keep the bird bath free of ice as it usually means all other water supplies will be frozen too and yours may be the only drinking water they can find. Any type of bird food can now be used as the breeding season is over. Leave a heap of leaves in a sheltered corner of the garden for hibernating mammals and insects, which will attract ground feeding birds. If you have an old ivy plant do not cut it back now as it will provide late nectar for insects.

Humour THE MANY FUNNY ASPECTS OF LIFE
I
n our humour column we often look at life and it’s somewhat funny aspects, and over the last few years I have heard numerous comments that I felt summed up that concept brilliantly. I’ve now gathered enough together to share them with you. I’m sure you’ll find some of them both appropriate and familiar! My wife says I only have two faults. The first is that I don’t listen and the second is some other stuff she was rattling on about. My ‘Super Power’ is holding onto junk for years and finally getting rid of it a week before I need it.
I wonder if clouds ever look down on us and say ‘Hey, look, that one is shaped like an idiot.’ I’m beginning to think I’ll never be old enough to know better! I got called pretty today. Well, actually the exact statement was ‘you’re pretty annoying,’ but I only focus on the positive things in life. I have a condition that prevents me going on a diet. I get hungry. I always knew I’d get old but I’m pretty surprised about how quickly it’s happening. Apparently you have to eat healthy more than once to get fit and in shape. This is cruel and unfair.
My wife heard that if you weigh 200lbs on earth you would only weigh 76lbs on Mars. She now claims she’s not fat, she’s just on the wrong planet!
When you see a man opening a car door for a woman there is one certainty ... it’s either a new car or a new wife!
Why do dogs always race to the door when the doorbell rings? It’s hardly ever for them.
When I married ‘Miss Right’ I didn’t know her first name was ‘Always.’
And while on the subject, the reason dogs have so many friends is that they wag their tails instead of their tongues. My wife and I get on really well because we always compromise. I admit I’m wrong and she agrees with me. I honestly think that senility is going to be a pretty smooth transition for me.
I just asked my husband if he remembers what today is..... scaring men is so easy. My girlfriend told me to see things from a woman’s point of view but she wasn’t amused when I looked out of the kitchen window. When my husband told me he had the body of a Greek God. I had to explain to him that Buddah wasn’t Greek!

SWEET PUMPKIN PIE
T
his American pie is tasty and delicious with an added bonus of being made with veg! Pumpkin and butternut squash are full of anti-oxidant vitamins such as vitamin-A, vitamin-C, and vitamin-E for healthy skin and bones. It is one of the low calorie veg with 4oz providing only 26 calories and has no fats or cholesterol, although it is rich in fibre and minerals. Eggs contain protein which is good for your muscles and vitamins and minerals for brain function and a healthy immune system. Recipe Ingredients: Pastry: Buy a pre-made pastry case or a pack of ready-made shortcrust pastry. 450g pumpkin or butternut squash, 2 eggs, 3oz brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, ½ teaspoon nutmeg, ½ teaspoon ginger, ½ teaspoon allspice/10 fluid oz of evaporated milk
Method: Peel the pumpkin or butternut squash and cut into chunks. Steam it until tender or cook it in the oven for 20-30 minutes on gas mark 6 / 200C. Squeeze the water out using a sieve or through thin cotton muslin. Mash the pumpkin until like a puree. Mix all the other ingredients well in a bowl and add the pumpkin. Roll out the pastry and line a flan tin (if you only have smaller ones, do two). Pour in the pumpkin filling into the tart tin and cook on gas mark 4/180C for 45 minutes. Test with a knife to see that the filling has set. Let it cool and serve cold with low fat crème fraiche or yoghurt rather than fattening cream. IT LOOKS LIKE A SEASON OF DEVELOPMENT

ou can look at the first eight games of the season and definitely conclude that the meagre reward of 9 points should have been considerably better. Without a woeful penalty attempt and two dreadful refereeing decisions, for instance, the first two games should have yielded six points instead of one. Add to that our failure to hold on to a single goal lead at both Millwall and Bristol City for the last quarter of an hour in each game cost another four points. You don’t need to be a mathematician to see that the season so far would have a completely different complexion if we’d demonstrated more consistent professionalism. The real optimists among us - and normally I would include myself in that category - would say that those additional seven points would have put us in the play-off positions and just one point behind Leeds and Swansea in the top two places. It has to be said, however, that in view of the performances so far that would have been a bit flattering. The best way to demonstrate that is to point out that the optimism created by a very good display at Bristol City evaporated in an equally poor show at Cardiff where a totally unnecessary own
goal from Ashley Fletcher gave the points to Cardiff when, in fairness, neither side created anything worthy of winning the game. In which case that was yet another point lost that should have been in the bag. Unfortunately, the conclusion that has to be drawn from all this is that we don’t have the depth of quality in the current squad to genuinely maintain a consistent challenge for the top positions, though the youthfulness of the squad overall suggests that there is plenty of room for development and improvement. That will require the younger players to gain more experience, a bit more strength and the ability to choose the right ball at the right time. Currently there are far too many passes either going astray or the choice of recipient is completely wrong. But that can be addressed on the training field as Jonathan Woodgate continues to promote his attacking philosophy and can hopefully give youngsters like Dijksteel, Brown and Bola a better conception of what he wants. By the same token it’s also vital that the more experienced players in the squad continue to take his ideas on board and develop a consistency that will lead to even more creativity. Although the ‘goals

for’ column could have been much better with more accuracy there is no denying that apart from the Cardiff game the team have been producing a number of good opportunities that have sadly not been taken. Hopefully things will improve in time and while I can understand Jonathan Woodgate clinging on to the hope that Middlesbrough can emulate Norwich’s performances in the second half of last season they are going to have to start very quickly. Things can change, of course, with two home games against Sheffield Wednesday and Preston to come at the time of writing. Personally, though, I don’t see either as being particularly easy. Six points from the two games, however, would be a tremendous return and could once again have the optimistic juices flowing. Here’s hoping!
