lant spring flowering bulbs such as daffodils, crocus, muscari and scilla but not tulips. Continue with dead heading and weeding so that you extend the flowering season and keep soil nutrients and moisture for your plants and not the weeds. If you have any large clumps of perennials or alpines then now is a good time to split and divide. Most plants can be separated into many smaller pieces which can all be replanted or given away. Discard the very old centre portion as this will not make a good new plant. Plant out new spring bedding such as wallflowers, primula and bellis. Bring inside any tender perennials such as fuchsia or geraniums before the first frosts. If you have somewhere frost free they can be kept over winter or if not then take cuttings. After the first frost lift cannas and dahlias or if you live in a sheltered spot you can try to leave them in the ground but cover them with straw or bracken.
then cut out a patch round it of about one foot square and turn the turf round so that the broken edge is now next to the lawn and the good edge is facing out. The bare patch can then be sprinkled with fine soil or compost and then seeded. It is a good time to scarify (rake out all the thatch and debris with a long tined rake) and aerate (make holes all over the lawn with a fork and brush in compost). It is hard work but well worth doing as the lawn looks much better and it prevents problems such as moss and water logging. After scarifying and aerating put on an autumn feed that is high in potassium. Don’t use a summer feed as you will get soft growth which will be prone to disease. Finally top dress the lawn with loam or sand working it in with a still brush or the back of a rake. If this all sounds like too much hard work you can buy scarifiers and aeraters to make life easier.

At the end of the month, wrap grease band around the trunks of fruit trees to prevent the wingless female moths from climbing up to lay their eggs. Continue to sow over wintering seeds such as spinach, turnip, lettuce and onions. Any outdoor tomatoes should be picked before frosts and brought indoors to ripen. Leave them on the vine and place the whole truss in a greenhouse or on a windowsill. Lift onions and shallots but do not bend over at the neck as they wont store as well. If the weather is not wet leave them to dry on the soil otherwise bring them into a dry shed. Lift all root vegetables and store in a cool, dark and dry place. Leave parsnips in the ground as they are better tasting after being frosted.
Wildlife Clean out bird baths and keep them topped up with water. As the breeding season for birds is not quite over it is still not safe to put out peanuts and other large bird food but continue with small bird food. If you have the room, put a pile of twigs or logs in a quiet corner of the garden as these will become home to lots of wildlife. To make it an attractive area plant around the logs with primroses, ferns etc. Do not cut back any plants with seed heads, such as sunflowers, as they provide a useful source of food for birds. Make or buy a hedgehog hibernation box and leave it under a pile of dead leaves at the back of garden where it will be undisturbed. If making it yourself add a tunnel to the entrance hole to stop predators from entering the nest.

Healthy Eating
BROAD BEAN, LEMON AND PARMESAN RISOTTO
T
his is a lovely summery recipe and easy to make, although you will need to keep and eye on it and stir it throughout the cooking period. Broad beans are a good source of fibre, protein and minerals. Rice is a good source of energy and is cholesterol-free. The recipe uses olive oil, which is “good” fat, as opposed to butter or lard which can raise your cholesterol.
RECIPE
2 tablespoons olive oil 1 onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves finely chopped 300g risotto rice 100ml dry white wine 1 ½ pints vegetable stock 150g broad beans 2oz grated parmesan Finely grated rind of 1 lemon plus the juice of half a lemon Salt and pepper Heat the oil at medium temperature. Fry the onion and garlic gently for 3 minutes (but don’t brown them). Add the rice and cook for 1 minute, stirring. Add the wine and cook, stirring, until almost absorbed.
Continue cooking and stirring gradually adding more stock until half the stock has been used. Stir in the beans. Gradually add the remaining stock, a little at a time, until the mixture is thickened and creamy but still has a little bite. This will take 15-18 minutes. Stir in the parmesan, lemon rind and juice and season with salt and pepper. Serve with a salad. Tip: You can buy frozen broad beans or you can use half broad beans and half peas. If you don’t have parmesan, use strong cheddar cheese. Leave the salt out if you are on a low salt diet (the salt in the stock and cheese will be enough).

NOT WHAT WE’D HOPED FOR... BUT PERHAPS...

ecause of deadlines I’m writing this having just returned from the first win of the season against Wigan which, despite the result, was not a great performance. Along with everything else that’s happened in the season so far things are not what we’d hoped for, but if anyone examined our first two games in a just and measured fashion they would have to say that it should have been infinitely better. But for a shambles of a penalty and an even bigger shambles of a linesman we should really have started the season with two wins. Friday nights have been pretty good to us over the past ten years or so and gaining a penalty against Luton with seven minutes to go while already 3-2 up should have continued that success and comfortably put the game to bed. Regardless of Jonathan Woodgate’s attempts to reduce the pressure on Britt Assombalonga after the game the fact remains that a man who cost £15m and is our number one striker should at least have hit the target. That he also failed to do so against Crewe Alexandra is another story... at least in the Wigan game he redeemed himself with a superb finish from Johnny Howson’s excellent cross. Flick to the following Saturday and at half
time we had completely out-performed Brentford, scored two perfectly good goals and should have had the game in our pocket. If the linesman managed to sleep that night he must have a skin like a rhino. Two dreadful decisions gave them the momentum to come out in the second half and really go for it. Whether that would have been the case at 2-0 down is anybody’s guess. So at that point we could have had the perfect start to the season. The result at Blackburn, I’m afraid, was about as much as we deserved but there will always be downsides to my optimism and that was certainly one of them. On the other hand - and in my usual optimistic manner - I’ve seen a great deal in the games so far to be enthusiastic about the way in which the players are trying to adhere to Jonathan Woodgate’s attacking philosophy. Perhaps their efforts, however, are demonstrating that in some cases there simply isn’t the talent to undergo the huge changes that Woodgate is trying to implement. One of the main requirements of his new attacking style is being able to pass the ball quickly and accurately which also means good movement all over the pitch so that there is always someone available to take the pass. While the latter has been

reasonably good it’s a sad indictment of the team’s overall ability that a considerable number of what should have been straightforward passes keep going astray. Hopefully, it will get better and Jonathan Woodgate’s insistence that he will continue regardless with this new style should be good news for all of the people who bemoaned the Pulis lack of ambition. Let’s also hope that the players will eventually adapt and be able to handle it to provide us with a season of real excitement. Woodgate has already stated on a number of occasions that ‘it’s a work in progress and it’s going to be a rocky road’ and I for one feel he needs the fans to be patient for it to happen. Another win against Millwall, who themselves have had a pretty good start, would be a great way to keep the momentum from the Wigan game going. Fingers crossed!
