R
ecycle your Christmas tree by shredding or taking it to any voluntary run organisations who will dispose of it for you. Remove any snow from greenhouse and conservatory roofs and also from tree branches and shake it off shrubs to prevent breakages. Cut off old leaves from hellebores to expose the flowers and mulch underneath with bark or grit to stop the flowers being splashed with mud when it rains. If the weather is very cold try grouping planted containers together next to a south facing wall for extra protection. Check that pots close to walls are getting adequate rain water and if not water on a regular basis. Check your greenhouse insulation is still in place and that your heater, if you have one, is working properly. Sow sweet peas in long tubes and put
in a heated propagator. Once they have germinated they can be moved to a cold greenhouse or cold frame. Ventilate the greenhouse on mild and sunny days but don’t forget to close down well before dark. On fine dry days walk around your garden and inspect that all is as it should be e.g. no plants have come loose at the base with wind rock, tree ties are not broken, tree stakes are not loose, no branches have snapped and left jagged edges where disease could enter etc
Lawns New turf can be laid in mild weather but not if the ground is either frozen or water logged. Lawn edges can also be repaired to save time later on. You can also deal with humps or hollows in your lawn now. Cut a cross with a spade and carefully peel back the

turf. Either remove or add some soil to the required level and put back the turf, pushing the cut edges together. Keep off the lawn as much as possible during bad weather, either cold or rain.
Fruit and Vegetables
Plant new fruit trees or bushes if the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. Cut down and remove the stumps of any old fruit trees that are not now worth their keep. Prune currants and gooseberries. Place cloches over strawberry plants for an earlier crop. Start to force rhubarb by placing a large pot, bucket or special forcing jar over the crown. Sow broad beans in pots and place in a cold frame for planting out in the spring. For early crops of lettuce, radish, spring onions, etc, sow the seeds in trays or pots and germinate on a windowsill or in a heated propagator. Once germinated the seedlings can then be put in a greenhouse for planting out next month. Onions grown from seed can also be germinated now in the same way but do not plant out until March.
Wildlife
As most of the berries and seeds will be gone from the garden by now it is most important that you keep the bird table regularly topped up. At this time of year they really like anything fatty such as meat, cheese, cooking fat, coconut or any other nuts that have not been salted. Some birds such as thrushes and blackbirds prefer to eat on the ground so if you have any fruit that is past its best these could be left in an open part of the garden.
Keep the bird bath topped up with fresh water and make sure it is not frozen. If your pond is frozen over hold a saucepan with boiling water on top of the ice and wait until it melts a hole. Do not smash through the ice as this will harm fish and wildlife.

ELECTRIC CARS ARE DEFINITELY THE TRANSPORT OF THE FUTURE - THE ZOE IS A GREAT EXAMPLE
T
wo of the most common complaints about electric cars are the high price and the limited range that can be achieved on a full charge, but Renault have redeveloped their ‘Zoe’ model to overcome both problems with their updated version. This five-door, Fiesta-sized hatchback can comfortably do around 160 miles on a full charge (in warm weather), costs less to buy than most other electric cars and comes with plenty of standard equipment, including a wall-mounted 7kW charger installed at your home. But while this isn’t the most wide-ranging overhaul of a current model we’ve ever seen, the added values include a more powerful electric motor, an update for the touch screen infotainment system, a new paint colour (Renault calls it Aconite Purple) and a few new pieces of interior trim. This updated version is a five door hatchback that while costing less than the majority of other electric cars will still give you a comprehensive range of useful and attractive equipment. Probably the most important piece of gear provided is that wall mounted 7kw charger
that’s installed in your home so you can always keep your battery charged overnight for instant use next morning. Charging the Zoe from empty takes seven to eight hours. Having said, that, though, they’ve created something of a new problem by introducing a plan on the cheapest version of the car where owners own the car but don’t actually own the battery because that has to be leased separately. You can, however, buy the car and the battery together by going for an ‘i’ version, but this pushes up the price. In addition, any issues with the battery after the five-year/60,000mile warranty period will be your problem. The recommendation is that you lease the battery separately. This requires a considerably lower upfront cost and also means Renault is responsible for the condition of the battery; you’ll get a new one free of charge if the range drops below 75% of what it was when the car was new – regardless of how old the car is. From behind the wheel, though, the Renault ZOE feels much like a traditional - but much quieter - combustion-engine super mini. It gives you a more powerful electric motor with an increase from the still available

Renault proudly claims this is the market’s longest-range UK mainstream electric car, with none of the Zoe’s current crop of electric rivals (the Leaf, i3, Volkswagen e-Golf and Hyundai Ioniq Electric) rated to go quite as far on a single charge. It has to be said that one of the great benefits of an electric car is the absence of any gears, meaning smooth, nippy acceleration the instant you squeeze the accelerator pedal. Zoe is no exception to that concept and is a relaxing drive that’s really fun to handle around town. It turns corners keenly enough, helped by its light and precise steering, and there’s plenty of grip, but the soft suspension means a fair bit of body lean without ever lurching uncomfortably. Compared with other petrol or diesel rivals, the Zoe is extremely quiet because the electric motor comfortably eliminates any
normal engine sounds. It isn’t as refined as some of its rivals, however, as it generates slightly more wind and road noise. But that’s a small price to pay for all the other benefits on offer. For instance, choose a Zoe as your company car and your tax bills will be cheaper than most petrol or diesel alternatives. However, you need to make sure you can live with the limited range – it’s actually very good by electric car standards but it might still cause you the occasional headache. Perhaps electric cars are still in their development stage but if we are to take the Government’s future motoring plans seriously we are all going to have to consider these options in the next few years. Looking at the Zoe, you could do much worse than look favourably on everything it offers. But conversely - if you are one of those forward thinking people who want to be among the forerunners of your generation - it’s surely worth a look right now!

If you fancy a snack, guacamole is a Mexican dip you can make to have with grilled pita bread pieces (break pita break into pieces, brush with olive oil and put under the grill) or tortilla chips
RECIPE: 2 ripe avocados, 1 lime, 1/4 cup red onion, diced, 1/4 cup tomatoes, diced, 1/4 cup fresh coriander, chopped (if you have it), 1-2 cloves garlic, minced, 1/2 jalapeño pepper minced (optional), 1/2 teaspoon sea salt. Mash avocados & mix in everything else. Serve with tortilla chips & hot sauce.

t’s a well known fact that January is the most depressing month of the year. It may be that the weather is at its worst or that Christmas is over for another year but whatever the reason people tend to be at their worst this month. So here’s the opportunity to have a little smile while you enjoy your coffee. And can we take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy and prosperous New Year.
A primary school teacher had a map of the world on the classroom wall and said ‘I’m going to ask you some geography questions.’ She asked little Mary to come up to the map and said ‘Mary, can you point to America on the map. Mary stood on her tiptoes and put her finger right on North America. ‘Wonderful,’ said the teacher. ‘Now Johnny, can you tell me who discovered America?’‘Yes Miss,’ said Johnny, ‘it was Mary.’ It was karaoke time at the pub and Paddy got up to sing ‘when Irish Eyes are Smiling.’ When he’d finished the song he noticed a lady in the front row crying into her handkerchief. He walked over to her and said ‘Ah, for sure, you must be an Irish lady.’‘No,’ she said, ‘I’m a music teacher. There was a sudden electricity failure in a Dublin store and hundreds of people were stranded on the escalators for hours. The old gentleman was backing his Rolls Royce into the last available parking space when a zippy red sports car whipped in behind him to take the spot. The young man who was driving jumped out of the car and said ‘Sorry Pops, but you’ve got to be young and smart to do that.’ The old man ignored the remark and continued to reverse into the sports car leaving it a crumpled wreck. ‘Sorry, son’ said the old man, ‘but you have to be old and rich to do that! The other day, my wife asked me to pass her a lipstick but I accidentally passed her a glue stick by mistake. She still isn’t talking to me.
Two small boys were playing with a football outside their home when their mother came to the gate and said ‘where did you get that football from?’‘We found it,’ said one of the boys. ‘Are you sure it was lost?’ asked the mother. ‘Yes,’ said the second boy. We saw some people looking for it.’ A man sidles over to a woman in a bar and used the oldest pick-up line in the world .... ‘your place or mine?’ The woman stared contemptuously back at him and said ‘Both. You go to yours and I’ll go to mine.’ A chap was telling his friends about his mother in law. ‘She’s a remarkable woman,’ he said. ‘She’s eighty five year old and doesn’t use glasses.’‘So she must have really great eyesight?’ replied one of his friends. ‘Nah,’ he said. ‘She drinks straight from the bottle!’ An old man came back from his retirement party and complained bitterly that all his working life he’d had to live by the clock. ‘We get up by the clock, go to school by the clock and finish school by the clock. When we begin work we start by the clock, come home by the clock and go to bed by the clock,’ he said. That goes on for sixty five years until you retire. So what do they give you when you finish? A bloody clock! My mother used to read the obituaries every morning in the local paper. She always thought it was amazing that people seemed to die in alphabetical order. The difference between men and women is that women never admit their age and men very rarely act theirs. But Nancy Astor - on her 80th birthday - had it right when she said ‘I used to dread getting older because I thought I wouldn’t be able to do all the things I wanted to do. Now I am older I find I don’t want to do them anyway!’ Teacher: “If you had one dollar and you asked your father for another, how many dollars would you have?” Vincent: “One dollar.” Teacher: “You don’t know your arithmetic.” Vincent: “You don’t know my father.”

THESE STATISTICS DON’T LIE!
A
ccording to former British prime minister Benjamin Disraeli there are, ‘lies, damned lies, and statistics’ - a phrase he used to describe the persuasive power of numbers, particularly the use of statistics to bolster weak arguments. In the case of ‘Boro’s season to date, however, the statistics certainly do not lie and at the time of writing a paltry one win from the last seven home league games speaks volumes for the work that has to be done in January. An even more damning statistic is that those seven games reaped just four home goals with seven being scored by the opposition. There has been a great deal of pride in the number of clean sheets ‘Boro have managed to keep over the start of this season but those seven results are a greater comment on the paucity of the attack than they are on the ability of the defence. Perhaps the best example was the home game against Tony Mowbray’s Blackburn Rovers where - having gone down to ten men with a completely needless free kick and sending off (Mo Besic had what seemed like about twenty minutes to move the ball on and dallied until it was taken from him then stupidly pulled his man backwards by the shirt) we still had great chances and absolutely blew them.
The Assombalonga goal was a beauty but his miss with only the keeper to beat was something I would have been ashamed of, never mind a supposed professional striker. Much is also made of the work Jordan Hugill does in keeping hold of the ball and bringing in the rest of the team but what good is that when he’s your only striker and isn’t getting fast enough back-up for it to count. There has been a lot of talk about the January window and how we have to keep as close to the top as we can until then, but why? I find it difficult to name anyone who would not only be both available and willing to come to Middlesbrough in January, but who would also be able to make the required impression. The situation worsens when you realise that whatever reinforcements come in they are still going to have to play in a negative set-up with a lone striker up front. But, as I’ve said before, all that is Tony Pulis’ problem and how he handles it will be the catalyst for either a great season or a hugely disappointing one. Since this is the start of a new year if not a new season I can only wish all you ‘boro fans a very happy outcome to the January window. Perhaps the only really exciting aspect of the season to date is that - at the time of

writing anyway - we are still in the league cup (or whatever else they like to call it) with a real potential of achieving another semi final place. Having played the kids previously, however, it will be interesting to see what the attitude to the Burton Albion quarter final will be. Whatever way Pulis handles it, though, we’ll never have a better chance of a semi final spot and it just can’t be frittered away. Looking at the remaining teams it was a dream draw for us and knowing the way the top clubs dilute their teams for these sort of games it’s inadvisable to write us off for a final spot at this stage either. But things simply have to change and unless we start converting the few chances we get the season will fade to nothing. It’s up to you Tony, but I for one am not holding my breath with anticipation when January 1st comes and the window opens. Let’s hope I’m wrong. In the meantime may we wish you all a very happy and successful 2019.
