ut down herbaceous stems and clear the tatty remains of annuals, but do leave a little cover of the perennials that fade relatively elegantly (sedum, astilbes and grasses for example) They will provide winter interest as well as some much needed wildlife shelter - ladybirds especially appreciate winter quarters and will repay your hospitality by disposing of aphids in industrial quantities next year. Leaving sodden debris and fallen leaves around plants will only encourage pests and disease.
Clean out the greenhouse Clear out the greenhouse, wash pots and trays, clean, mend and oil your tools and throw away anything that is beyond hope or reasonable repair! Cleaning your greenhouse thoroughly will prevent pests from hibernating
and leaping into action next spring. Wash the windows inside and out to allow maximum light in over the winter and scrub benches, fixtures and glazing bars with disinfectant, making sure you hose the whole place down really well, especially dark and dusty corners. For really effective pest elimination, fumigation is the ticket. Move all plants outside, shut the windows, light a sulphur candle in the middle of the floor, (retreat at speed!), shut the door and wait until the smoke and fumes have completely dispersed several hours later. Your greenhouse should now be delightfully pest free!
Drain and lag... Save yourself untold irritation and expense by draining and lagging standpipes, outdoor taps, irrigation lines and water pumps in advance of sudden hard frosts.

Prepare your soil for next year For beds that lie bare in winter, carry on with the winter digging until the soil is too hard - use compost, manure, leaf mould - in fact as much organic matter as you can lay your hands on to replace the goodness in it. It can be left in a pretty rough state over the winter when the elements will break the clods down, making spring planting infinitely easier! For text book soil improvement, you should add a layer of organic matter and dig it in by turning over spadefuls so it is buried below the surface. If this seems too much like hard work, just mulch the bed and leave the rest to the worms! If your soil is thin or heavy clay, just fork it over now; too much digging on the former will bring up infertile matter from below whilst great chunks of wet clay will remain rock solid over the winter and become nigh on impossible to break up next year.
Rake them up and throw into a simple frame made of chicken wire or wood. Failing that, black bin liners spiked with air holes will do if you can bear the sight, but remember to dampen the leaves first should they be dry (some hope!). ith food prices going up and wages staying the same, we all need to think about our budgets but also stay healthy. One way to make your food shopping trips economical and ensure you don’t waste food is to plan your weekly meals in advance: • See what you’ve already got in the house and use these ingredients to plan your meal • Look online or in cookbooks to find ideas for healthy and low-cost meals based on what’s cheap in the supermarkets and what your family enjoys. One good website is https://www. bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/category/ healthy - you can search recipe categories or put in an ingredient and it comes up with recipe suggestions. In the meantime, try this recipe, great thick Lentil Soup for winter:
Ingredients: 8oz greens (cabbage, broccoli, kale etc), 2 tablespoons olive oil, 2 medium carrots, 1 medium onion, 4 cloves garlic, 1 teaspoon ground cumin, 1 teaspoon paprika, ½ teaspoon turmeric, 2 medium tomatoes, 6 cups veg stock, 1½ cups red lentils, salt and pepper, dessertspoon lemon juice Method: Steam green and set aside. Finely chop onions, carrots and garlic and fry gently for about 8 minutes until golden. Add tomatoes and cook for a few minutes. Stir in the spices for 30 seconds. Add stock and lentils. Bring to the boil and reduce the heat, cook until lentils are soft. Put in your cooked greens, salt and pepper and lemon juice. Blend. Tips: Buy bottled lemon juice – cheaper than fresh ones. CHRISTMAS CAKE This traditional rich fruit Christmas cake is moist, loaded with nuts and fruit that have been fortified with sherry and rum, and warmingly spiced with cinnamon.
INGREDIENTS: 250g currants 250g raisins 250g sultanas 90g glacé cherries 50g chopped candied citrus peel 60g sliced almonds Finely grated zest of ½ a lemon & ½ an orange 275g plain flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon ¾ teaspoon ground mixed spice 225g butter 225g light brown sugar 4 medium free range eggs 1 tablespoon of black treacle (this is optional, it gives the cake a darker appearance and a deeper treacle taste) 2 tablespoons each of sherry and dark rum
METHOD: Preheat oven to gas mark 2 or 150 °C (130 °C for a fan assisted oven). Grease and double line a deep 8”/20cm cake tin using non-stick baking paper. Fold a 27“/69cm length of brown paper to form a strip that stands 5cm above the depth of your baking tin. Place the paper around the outside of the tin and tie it in place with string. This extra brown paper will protect the cake edges while baking. Gather, weigh and prepare the dried ingredients. Sort through the currants, raisins and sultanas and remove any stalks.
Wash and dry the cherries and chop them in half. Place the dried fruit, cherries, candied citrus peel and grated zest in a large bowl and mix well. Add 1 tablespoon each of sherry and rum and leave to stand. If you have the time, the fruit can be prepared the evening before and allowed to absorb the sherry and rum overnight. Sift the flour and spices into a separate bowl. Break the eggs into a jug, and whisk lightly with a fork. In another big bowl cream the sugar and

butter until light, fluffy and pale in colour. If you are using treacle add it now. Add the whisked egg to the creamed butter and sugar a little at a time, along with a tablespoon of the sifted flour. Using a metal spoon, gently fold in the remaining flour. Then stir in the dried fruits and almonds. Combine well. Spoon the cake mixture into the pre-lined cake tin. Use a wet spoon to ensure that the mixture is flat, level and smooth and that all the fruit is covered, to prevent it catching when baking. Place a 9 or 10” square piece of non-stick baking paper over the rim of the cake tin to protect the top of the cake whilst baking. Fold a piece of brown paper several times to make a nine or ten inch square, put it onto a baking sheet and place the full cake tin on top. The paper will protect the bottom of the cake from burning, and the baking tray will make the cake easier to remove from the oven. Place the tray and cake on a shelf in the center of the oven. Bake for two hours then turn the oven down gas mark 1 or 140 °c (120 °c for a fan assisted oven). Bake for a further two hours. After four hours, remove the cake from the oven and test with a metal skewer as baking times can vary. If the skewer comes out clean the cake is done. If not return to the oven and retest every 10 minutes until done. Remove the cake from the oven and allow it to cool in the tin, with a clean tea towel placed over the top to keep the moisture in. Once the cake is completely cold, turn it out of the tin. Prick the top of the cake with a sterile skewer. Pour on the remaining sherry and rum, allowing the alcohol to soak into the holes before wrapping in greaseproof paper and an outer layer of foil.

EXPERIENCE IS COUNTING FOR EVERYTHING!
W
ith the very difficult transfer situation over the summer break that saw more players leave than be recruited it would have been easy to expect another long, hard winter at the Riverside. Six games in, however, and the change from last season has been remarkable. OK, we still aren’t scoring a lot of goals, but the difference in attitude, effort and expectation is very plain to see with the latest result as I write an excellent away win against top of the table Bristol City. That it follows a hard fought draw against Reading, the side who at the time were also top of the table is a great indication that Middlesbrough are once again a team to be reckoned with. Perhaps the most important aspect of both results was that they were achieved quite comfortably with experienced senior players missing through injury. Having to start the Bristol game
with just one recognised striker in Chuba Akpom was a good indication of the well documented thinness of the squad but the way the team performed and the work they put it was a credit to every one of them. With five defenders and three defensive minded midfielders it was hard to see where the goals would come from but an absolute gift from the Bristol City defence eventually gave us the three points, and at that point it was no more than we deserved. It hardly needs to be said that Neil Warnock is again working his magic with a team who are most certainly benefiting from his wealth of experience at this level. The three central defenders for Reading and Bristol, for instance, included a midfield player (McNair) and a fullback (Dijksteel), but in both games the three performed superbly giving the opposition very few chances. It’s also great to note that Warnock

next, things certainly aren’t getting any easier. But, so far so very good, and with only four goals conceded out of six games it is pretty obvious where the basics of the unbeaten run have come from. (Further evidence of that is that we’ve only scored five in the same six games, so we know where improvement is needed if we are to maintain the climb up the table.) Obviously the most frustrating thing is that fans can’t be a physical part of all this but in the strangest situation any of us have ever known we can only do our bit to try and prevent things from getting any worse. So please, stick to the rules, stay safe and keep doing your bit until we can all once more congregate at the Riverside.

has somehow managed to bring Dael Fry back to the player he was when the general consensus of opinion was that he looked to have a great future in the game. So, with a bit of a lop-sided transfer window the work rate and the influence Warnock has been able to inject into the remainder of the squad that last season looked destined for relegation is a wonderful testament to his ability to get the absolute most out of what he has. And let’s be honest, had we taken a couple of the chances that have so far gone begging we would have already been in and around the top three. It certainly hasn’t been an easy start fixtures-wise with perhaps Barnsley the only game that didn’t look too ominous. And with a trip to Cardiff up
