Hot rods and classic cars are the stars of this family-friendly fall festival. And what is fall without football? Follow the crowd to Apogee Stadium for some Mean Green football. UNT football is exciting with quarterback Mason Fine leading the team down the field. An issue of Denton Live wouldn’t be complete without showcasing our unique local flavors. This issue features some of the best cheeseboards in town, the perfect food to enjoy with a local craft beer from Barley and Board. To kick the season off, Denton’s Holiday Lighting Festival and Wassail Weekend brings lights, magic and Santa for all to enjoy. Denton has so much happening, it is hard to pick a favorite. Luckily, you don’t have to pick; you can enjoy them all. For details on “All Things Denton”, turn the page and discover Denton Live. EVERYTHING WILL BE

FINE

kickoff UNT QB MASON FINE EPITOMIZES THE RESURGENT MEAN GREEN

Story by Tyler Hicks Photos by Rick Yeatts Photography

M

ason Fine’s fondest memories are his throwing sessions with his unlikely, live-in quarterback coach. As a young athlete, the aspiring football star attended many youth camps in his native Oklahoma, and the advice was always the same: Take these lessons home, and work on them with your quarterback coach. So Fine would take a pigskin to his backyard in Locust Grove, Oklahoma — a small town outside Tulsa — and toss the football around with the only quarterback coach he had: his father. Fine’s father, Dale, helped Mason master the passing precision that is now the bane of Conference USA opponents. “Family is everything to me,” Fine

4

DENTON LIVE

says. “Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today.” Today, Fine is on top of the world — or, at least, Denton, Texas. As the fourth-year quarterback at the University of North Texas, Fine has witnessed — and led — a bonafide football resurgence in the Lil ‘d. After winning just one game the year before Fine’s arrival, the Mean Green won 5, 9 and 9 games his freshman, sophomore and junior years. During that time, Fine has become the model of consistency a team needs to accomplish a significant turnaround. The Locust Grove native has won consecutive Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year awards and broken Mean Green records for pass attempts, completions, yards, passer efficiency, and 300-yard passing games. But just as he praises Dale and the Fine Family for launching his football career,

Mason Fine will never take sole credit for any of his accomplishments. “It’s a team sport, and I’m lucky enough to have a great team. It’s kind of like a family.” 

Mason Fine grew up in a tight-knit family of Cherokee descent. As a kid, he worshipped OU football star Adrian Peterson. Baseball may have been Fine’s first love, but the more he watched Peterson run, juke, jump, score and scorch the Sooners’ opponents on the national stage, the more he pestered Dale Fine to let him play football. Dad ultimately gave in. “The goal was just to play high school ball,” Fine recalls. “There was a time where that alone was the dream.” But dreams change. Coaches hailed Fine’s talent and throwing arm at a young age, and as early as eighth

grade, the young QB had visions of D1 football dancing in his head. Still, there was the pesky element of size to consider. At just 5’11”, Fine is shorter than the average quarterback. That fact did him little favors during his later years in high school. Despite hurling 53 touchdowns his senior year at Locust Grove High School, and becoming the first player to win the Gatorade Oklahoma Player of the Year award twice, Fine earned a meager two-star rating from the popular recruiting website Rivals.com. Rice and Oklahoma State were interested, but not enough to make an offer. Fine’s D1 dreams seemed all but dashed when a man by the name of Seth Littrell came to Denton. Fresh off a vaunted stint as Offensive Coordinator for North Carolina’s Tar Heels, Littrell came to town in December 2015, eager to turn things around for the Mean Green. Littrell, an Okie like Fine, knew Fine’s coach Matt Hennesy, who couldn’t speak more highly of his QB1. Littrell and the quarterback hit it off immediately. “People talk a lot about what he does on the field, but they don’t see the work he puts in off of it,” Littrell told sports journalist Jim Rome. “He’s a workhorse.” Littrell’s and Fine’s careers took off at the same time. While the quarterback was breaking record after record, Littrell was busy becoming the first Mean Green head coach in four decades to boast back-to-back 9-win seasons. Both men became Denton icons overnight. The city and its scores of newfound football fanatics breathed a collective sigh of relief when Littrell opted to stay in Denton for a fourth year, while Fine became so beloved that his university now sells a tee with “UNT” emblazoned on the front in the Cherokee language. Still, he defers all praise to Coach Littrell and his UNT family. “Coach has created a culture of winning, a culture of community,” he says. “That’s what I love most about this group: the community.” Is there anything Fine will take credit for? Better yet: Will he ever not praise his teammates, coaches and families (his literal family and his Mean Green troupe) for achievements others are eager to attribute to him? Doubtful. His confidence? That comes from Dad. His stats? His coaches and teammates, of course. That historic lastsecond win over UTSA, where Fine led the Mean Green 98 yards in 67 seconds? Surely he would take a little credit for that, right? Maybe? “That was one of the highlights for me,” he says, reminiscing about that game. He’s dangerously close to taking credit, to claiming his rightful, well-deserved status as hero of the Mean Green. But just as he’s about to brag, or come close to something remotely resembling a brag, Mason Fine veers left. “I owe my guys on that one. With them, I knew everything would be fine.”

Take a ride ARTS & AUTOS CELEBRATES ITS 20TH YEAR OF NOSTALGIA Story by Claire Higgins Photos by Tammi Paul Photography

I

f there’s one thing Denton does well (I know, it’s hard to pick just one, but hear me out), it’s nostalgia. The four corners of the downtown Square act as a sort of force field, and upon entering the threshold, visitors are transported to a time when analog reigned supreme. So, when an event that captures that specific nostalgic sentiment comes along, you can expect it to return year after year. The Arts & Autos Extravaganza is that event. Presented annually by the Denton Main Street Association, this year’s 20th anniversary event falls on Saturday, Sept. 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Hot rods, classic cars, soupedup trucks and motorcycles line the Square. Local artisans selling handmade goods and artwork, as local musicians take to the courthouse steps to play the soundtrack for the day, and all ages decorate the sidewalk with chalk as part of the chalk fest.

The Arts & Autos Extravaganza offers multi-generational art enthusiasts and car lovers a chance to connect while giving visitors a glimpse into transportation trends from 1920 until today. Car aficionados numbering into the thousands from across Texas and Oklahoma fill the Square, and more than 250 cars are expected to register for the event in at least one of the 75 judging categories, according to Denton Main Street Association’s events and marketing coordinator Christine Gossett. Judges and gearheads make their rounds to examine every car, truck and motorcycle entered, deciding awards such as Best in Show and Best Gas Guzzler, with almost everything in between. From the best Pre-’30s original model to the best ‘82 Corvette original and

modified, to the best Euro bike and ‘60s-era truck, Arts & Autos leaves no perfect-condition engine unturned. It’s all about showcasing the automobiles, and Denton’s square, too. According to Gossett, Arts & Autos brings generations of Denton history hobbyists to the Square. Perhaps that’s because these hobbyists know that, at Arts & Autos, there’s a good story around every corner. A 13-time attendee and just about as many-time award winner, Ford Model A-owner Shawn Reneau is not your typical life-long car hobbyist. Nevertheless, he’s felt just as welcome in the community as if he was. He restored his father’s beloved 1929 Ford Model A Phantom as an 80th birthday surprise, and has since found his love and place at the Arts & Autos Extravaganza. With a dark teal paint job, accented with bright, light yellow rims, two thin yellow lines running from front to back, and an interior of buttery bourbon-colored leather, the Ford is a looker. And Reneau is a sharer. “Some people don’t even know what it is, but it brings back memories for

a lot of the old-timers who do know what it is,” he said.

THE DENTON MAIN STREET ASSOCIATION INVITES YOU TO

DOWNTOWN DENTON!

That’s the best part for him. Although he is a multi-time winner, Reneau is in it more for the stories that each car brings to the Square. For its 20th anniversary, the Arts & Autos Extravaganza is expected to be bigger than ever, so make sure you mark your calendar for this trip down memory lane. Enter the kids into the Chalk Fest, and line them up for the hands-on games and activities, as you make your way down Elm, Hickory, Locust and Oak Streets, stopping every couple of cars to get to know its own unique story, and its owner’s, too.

or nine days in August, Denton showcases its country side — and this year will be no different. The North Texas Fair and Rodeo features nine straight days of cowboy hats and boots, a rodeo every night, concerts featuring top-notch country music, livestock shows and funnel cakes. Whether youʼre a city slicker or country through-and-through, everyone can get their kicks at this family-friendly festival!

STEP ONE: GET OUTFITTED Most proper cowgirls and cowboys already have a ʻfavoriteʼ pair of boots, but if yours are showing their age, or your hat has gone lost, or your Wranglers suddenly are too holey for public viewing, it might be time to update your wear before the fair. Luckily, Denton has several fine shops prepared to help you with this dilemma. So drop on by and fix up your finery!

STEP TWO: SCOPE OUT THE SKED Every night of the North Texas Fair & Rodeo is chock full of talent, and it follows the same basic schedule. Just check for the performers and make your game plan! 6 pm: Performer(s) on the Bud Light Stage 7:30 pm: Rodeo at the Miller Lite Rodeo Arena 9:30 pm: Headliner performance on the Budweiser Stage 11 pm: Performer(s) on the Bud Light Stage Pat Green headlined one night of the 2018 North Texas Fair & Rodeo. STEP THREE: GET YOUR MAGIC MONEY

Donʼt want to carry your wallet around? Not a problem! Since 2017, North Texas Fair & Rodeo vendors only accept Magic Money currency, which can be loaded on a card purchased at the fairgrounds, then reloaded at an on-site machine or through a mobile app. (Magic Money is not accepted in the Commercial Events building, where vendors generally accept cards and cash.) Once you have your Magic Money wristband locked and loaded, you are ready to go on the carnival rides, share a funnel cake or even take the kiddos through the petting zoo.

STEP FOUR: HAVE FUN!

All in all, the North Texas Fair & Rodeo is a great excuse to appreciate the final days of summer before school starts, enjoy a cold beverage of your choice, listen to some fabulous music and kick back with family and friends. So what are you waiting for? Tickets will go on sale (including multi-day passes) on ntfair.com beginning July 15.

spooky dentoning Welcome to the Home of Happiness Story and Photos by Wendy Haun

“G

reat Scott!” Rolls of toilet paper sail through the air. But this is no Halloween prank -- this chaotic scene is standard at Alamo Drafthouse’s monthly showing of the cult classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”. A famous sign at the beginning of the film reads “Denton: The Home of Happiness.” That sign is just one of the reasons our own Alamo Drafthouse decided to adorn the walls with Rocky Horror posters when the cinema opened in 2018. The theater chain’s marketing team also approached the Los

14

DENTON LIVE

Bastardos theatre troupe, which already performed ‘shadowcast’ performances at other locations, to take up the helm and bring the experience to Denton.

“You can’t have an Alamo in Denton and not have a monthly Rocky Horror experience,” said James Wallace, creative director for Alamo Drafthouse DFW. “It was as much out of creative inspiration as it was necessity. We have a responsibility to be the theater home for this.” The second Saturday of every month has been designated Rocky Horror night at the Denton Drafthouse location. Each member of the troupe performs various roles, with someone on any given night being tapped to play every character, from a random Transylvanian to Dr. Frank-N-Furter himself. “If they come here and prove they

SOMETHING NEW IS DEVELOPING.

can do the part, they’ll play it,” said Leah, who leads the troupe and helps organize each showing. For those unfamiliar with a live ‘shadowcast’, the film will play on the screen while performers act out the entire show in front. This is no ordinary film viewing, though. The audience has a script of their own and are encouraged to purchase prop bags (to help offset the costs the troupe accrues) for $5 and be a part of the show. Props include playing cards, newspapers, rubber gloves, party hats and bits of toast, all of which have a purpose to get the audience involved in the performance. “The improv is the best part of doing it live,” said Heather, a Los Bastardos cast member. “Every show is different because of the audience participation. When they do participate, it’s really fun.” The Rocky Horror Picture Show holds its place in history as the longest first-run movie in history. It has never stopped showing in theaters since 1975. The film, which features a stellar cast including Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, Little Nell and UNT alumnus Meat Loaf, brings out a very Dentonesque crowd any time of the year, but especially around Halloween. “People let the Rocky Horror freak flag fly in October,” Wallace said. “It’s counter culture, and it’s horror-inspired, and there’s references to classic horror films. It appeals to that audience but there’s an up in interest in October for sure.”

DENTON HOLIDAY LIGHTING FESTIVAL - DEC. 6 The official kick-off to the holiday season falls a week after Thanksgiving in a fun and exciting tradition that Dentonites enjoy every year. With Denton musicians performing classic holiday tunes to a teaser of the Festival Ballet of North Texas’ performance of “The Nutcracker”, this festival doesn’t just involve lighting the tree. According to Michelle Boerst, festival committee chair, this year’s fête will break new ground by moving beyond the square. “This year we are in the great position of needing more room,” Boerst says. “We will be expanding our footprint beyond the actual square and adding more vendors and performers.” In addition to the lighting of the tree, the festival association works closely with Elves Shelves, an outreach program through First Denton Baptist, to gather toys for families in need throughout the season.

Cowboys, cowgirls, and just plain boys and girls are all welcome. The only requirement is that you come with a Texas-sized appetite. Old West Cafe • 2420 S I-35E oldwestcafe.us

TOP IT ALL WITH THAI OCHA Comfy atmosphere? Check. Top notch chef? Check. Tasty Thai? Check. Thai Ocha truly has it all. Each dish is made from the freshest possible ingredients, and the variety alone is enough to satisfy you and your crew. The pad thai is delicious yet not too filling, their signature orange chicken is a delight to any palate and their curries deliver tasty flavors, which can be adjusted for any spice level. Or, go lighter with one of their delicious soups (like the Tom Yum). There are vegetarian and gluten free options aplenty, too. Thai Ocha • 1509 Malone St • thaiocharestaurant.com

tepping into the historic Campus Theater can feel a bit like walking into a different time and place. From the retro neon marquee to the freestanding box office, it’s easy to picture patrons from the 50s, hustling and bustling through downtown Denton on their way to a show under the marvelous marquee back when it was a movie theater. This legendary building is Denton Community Theatre’s (DCT) home base. This year marks DCT’s 50th season of plays, musicals, and community events. DCT has been producing

26

DENTON LIVE

shows for the Denton community since 1969, confirms DCT Managing Director Mike Barrow. “In 1969, the City of Denton was interested in having cultural events, and one of those was a production of Our Town,” Barrow says. Several people involved with the production of the play decided to found a community theatre company in order to ensure that Denton’s residents would have consistent access to the performing arts, whether as audience members or actors. Now half a century from its humble beginnings, DCT has become a cornerstone of fine arts in Denton. That status as a pillar of the arts makes Barrow beam with pride.

“DCT went for many years without having a permanent performance space, to now managing the Campus Theater,” Barrow says. The Campus Theater isn’t just home to DCT — it’s also the headquarters for Music Theatre of Denton (MTD), founded in the 1980s under the moniker Denton Light Opera. The company formed primarily to perform the works of Gilbert and Sullivan, but as time passed, MTD began producing fewer light operas and more Broadway-style musicals. Now these two Denton institutions are opening a new chapter by merging their operations. “Since both companies produce musicals and often use the same

talent, both on and off stage, it made good sense to combine the two,” Barrow says. DCT’s production season runs from September through August of the following year. This summer’s productions include Lend Me a Tenor, The Marvelous Wonderettes (which is the featured production for their annual fundraiser) and Cats. Two other productions, Fool for Love and Late, a Cowboy Song will be performed at the Black Box Theater. So how does DCT plan to celebrate 50 years of quality community theater? “Plans will be revealed on the opening gala night of The Marvelous Wonderettes,” Barrow said. Looks like we’ll have to wait until showtime.

DCT 2019 Season May 31-June 2: Fool For Love (at Black Box Theatre) June 7-16: Lend me a Tenor June 28-30: The Marvelous Wonderettes August 2-4: Late, a Cowboy Song (at Black Box Theatre) August 9-18: Cats

STAR PARTIES remind us to look up

Story by Claire Higgins Photos courtesy of UNT Photo

he stars at night, are big and bright, deep in the heart of... Denton. Wait, what? Situated discreetly in the prairie lands off of I-35, just far enough away from the lights of UNT’s Apogee Stadium and down a winding road or two is the Rafes Urban Astronomy Center (RUAC). And on a clear Saturday evening, as the sun sets and the stars start to twinkle, a party is starting. A Star Party, to be specific, hosted by UNT’s Astronomy Lab. Weather permitting, Star Parties commence at sundown every first and third Saturday nights of the month. UNT’s resident “star man” and

DENTON LIVE

Astronomy Lab Director Ron Dilulio describes the community events as an “astronomical experience” tailored to be as simple or complex as you’d like. “This is the best place in the whole metroplex to view the sky and to experience astronomy without having to go 500 miles to the west,” he said. Part of the UNT Astronomy Department, the RUAC feels out of this world, yet sits just nine miles from the main campus. Star Parties offer an educational and expert-led look at the night sky, but it’s not just for kids. “This is meant as an inspiration and an adventure,” Dilulio said, also noting that parents tend to get a little more into than their pint-sized counterparts. But the kids are the ones who head home with an astronomy certificate and a newly

forget glint and gleam every night. The Star Parties typically last about two hours, providing plenty of time for exploration on your own after getting the educational part in. But according to Dilulio and Starr, no party is ever the same. The dependability and consistency of start-time, structure and location are perks, but the alwayschanging content and corresponding night sky leave opportunities for new experiences at every party.

According to Observatory Manager Preston Starr, the best time to arrive is about 30 minutes before the sun sets completely. Give your eyes a chance to adjust to the darkness and take in your surroundings. See the suspended planets overhead as you stroll through the RUAC’s planet walk. Peek and glance at the state-of-the-art telescopes you’ll soon be peering through. And look up. The stars start to multiply as the sun sinks below the horizon. When darkness falls, party attendees are guided through star maps and historical and mythological stories about how the skies impacted cultures and generations. Orion the Hunter, for example, is a favorite of Dilulio because it explains how constellations and stories connected different cultures throughout history. And because it’s fun to reference months in moons and say, “three moons ago,” like our ancestors did. Then it’s telescope time. Probably what the kids (and the kids-at-heart) have been waiting for. It’s worth it. Two basic and 12 complex, computerized telescopes are stationed expertly around the RUAC land, just begging to be looked through. Attendees take turns scanning the sky, getting a magnified view of the stars that we so often
