Welcome to the Visual Issue! Get ready for editorials from Los Angeles to the UK to Portland. None of the models you see on these pages have been photoshopped, and a true sense of individuality permeates every concept. We wanted to strip down the magazine to its simplest form to get at the realness. We eschewed all the traditional magazine interview fare. Instead, we created a completely visual issue that tells a story. We’re not using words to prescribe a way to be. We’re using images to show a way we are. In film school, they always teach you to “show and not tell”. I think that’s the best life advice, actually. Words can only do so much—you can’t experience someone’s world unless you see it through their lens. Photography is a gift in that way. So is personal style. In life, your trust can be broken by someone who says something but shows you completely different behavior. A visual artist shows you their true intentions with an image. No words
necessary. In return, you have a gut reaction and feel your own intentions as a response. It’s a really interesting, silent conversation. The way a lot of humans experience the world is through sight. It’s how we judge if something is real and worthy of our trust. We hear, we smell, all of that…but mainly, our memories and whatever stirs us is derived from visual information. From an independent designer showcasing her winter collection to androgynous editorials, welcome to a magazine packed with authenticity. Our goal was to create a piece that doesn’t distract or feel frenetic—you can focus and hone in on each thing without a million bubbles all over the place telling you different things (like in some big magazines). We hope you enjoy this visual conversation and concepts stripped down to their truest forms. We also hope you find a little of yourself in these pages.
