A Tribute to Women Who Shape Our Lives

I don’t know about you but I love any opportunity to recognize the women in my life who just make life more rich and beautiful. And of course with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms… but it’s not just the biological mothers but the mother figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s the family members, teachers, friends and neighbors doing awesome things in our communities, making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable.

Two weeks before the start of fifth grade, I learned my teacher would be the dreaded Mrs. Bedford. I was scared, anxious, angry and carried on back and forth with my best friend Maureen as we walked to school that first day. I just knew fifth grade was going to be horrible!  And you know what? Fifth grade was a year I will cherish forever. Mrs. Bedford was my champion. Not only did I learn fractions that year, but I also learned my value. Mrs. Bedford taught me the power of active listening, the power of setting goals and accomplishing them, and the importance of picking yourself up when things go sideways. This issue is devoted to the "Mrs. Bedfords" in our lives that quietly (or not so quietly) inspire us to make a difference.

This month, we introduce a few leading ladies that have made or are making an impact on others. Whether it’s highlighting the good in humanity, mentoring young artists, saving lives or turning their love into a thriving business—these are the stories that make you say, “Wow!"

While it’s always important to shop local and support our area's businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize businesses owned by women in our communities. That’s one of my favorite parts of this role—connecting with and championing the best of the best when it comes to Northwest Columbus’s women. And I wish I could showcase more in this issue. They are movers and shakers, builders and makers. They are both seen and unseen.

I hope you’ll take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call or get your kids on a video call with the women in your life who deserve recognition. It only takes a minute to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them. Much love to you and the women in our community that make our lives brighter.

BUILDING A COMMUNITYFOCUSED BUSINESS

Woman-owned chocolate shop brings delight to Northwest Columbus

CULINARY CREATIONS FOOD + BEVERAGES
12

Denise Steele, owner of Lohcally Artisan Chocolates, just celebrated her one year anniversary of holding her quaint chocolate shop on prime real estate in downtown Powell, located at 77 W. Olentangy Street.

Her love of chocolate started when she was a little girl watching her own mother work in a chocolate shop, witnessing firsthand the love and happiness that a simple hometown shop can bring.

“It was an uplifting place that really represented the town,” she says of Hartville, Ohio, an AmishMennonite, historical community where people came in to buy gifts and goodies for themselves and loved ones, remembering that feel-good feeling that swept over her as she watched happy customers walk out with their delectable treats.

“It was part of the appeal that gave the town its identity,” she says of the shop. “I knew I wanted to have something that would do the same thing of bringing a community together. That set the tone for what I wanted the business to be for the community.”

Originally starting out as a wholesale model in 2019, carrying her chocolates in surrounding local shops, she was forced to pivot when Covid hit. That, plus the demand from customers (most of whom she acquired from being a vendor at the North Market downtown) pushed her to open her own space—a decision the community is thankful for.

Denise's specialty is the hand-painted chocolate truffles that she creates in the back of her retail shop; gorgeous, bite-size chocolates that are as pretty to look at as they are delicious to taste.

“Everybody kept focusing on those so we just kept expanding with more of that aesthetic, and they are the star of the show,” she says of the glistening marble chocolates.

If you know anything about chocolate-making, you know it is an arduously difficult craft to perfect—one of the most difficult food mediums to learn, Denise tells me—as achieving a "properly tempered chocolate" is quite challenging, even to the most skilled chocolatiers.

“The chocolate must go through a precise temperature curve to achieve perfection, which requires weaning out all of the ‘bad’ crystals,” Denise explains of the process. “We ensure our chocolates have that shine and snap, and that ‘Wow’ factor each time you taste them.”

What has perhaps surprised Denise the most about her business is that she’s seen people really embrace gift-giving, for any occasion, like going to someone’s house for dinner and wanting to bring over a special treat.

“They are fun little conversation starters,” she says of the truffles. “I think people are looking for gifts to give that they identify with, and we’re just trying to add to that.”

Her advice to women looking to start a business, open a store or pursue anything entrepreneurial, is to realize that life is short, suggesting we simply need to “just go for it” without overthinking.

“I feel that women have so many different objectives tugging at them,” she says. “We are always second-guessing ourselves. Embracing the stage that you’re at and persevering through, whether it’s career, family or a health struggle, there will always be a challenge to overcome...If you have a passion or dream that will benefit someone else in your community, I say go for it. That’s what I find to be the most fulfilling—to have the drive and purpose of ‘What am I doing this for?’—serving the community and providing encouragement.”

1- Guaranteed Rate home equity line of credit (HELOC) is an open-end product where the full loan amount (minus the origination fee) will be 100% drawn at the time of origination. The initial amount funded at origination will be based on a fixed rate; however, this product contains an additional draw feature. As the borrower repays the balance on the line, the borrower may make additional draws during the draw period. If the borrower elects to make an additional draw, the interest rate for that draw will be set as of the date of the draw and will be based on an Index, which is the Prime Rate published in the Wall Street Journal for the calendar month preceding the date of the additional draw, plus a fixed margin. Accordingly, the fixed rate for any additional draw may be higher than the fixed rate for the initial draw. This product is currently not offered in the states of New York, Kentucky, Texas, West Virginia, Delaware and Maryland. The HELOC requires you to pledge your home as collateral, and you could lose your home if you fail to repay. Borrowers must meet minimum lender requirements in order to be eligible for financing. Extraordinary Women of Northwest Columbus

INSPIRING

MESSAGES FROM LOCAL LEADING LADIES, FROM THE PAST TO THE PRESENT

MUST SEE | ARTS + CULTURE
Shirley Brooks-Jones
16
Jenny Beck

In honor of the women's issue , we wanted to highlight inspiring forces in our community's history, including a beloved author, the infamous Shirley Brooks-Jones, and a woman dedicated to helping young girls and women recover from eating disorders.

While each female leader is an inspiration in her own way, the common thread in these three exemplars is a message of taking action when the opportunity presents itself.

SHIRLEY BROOKS-JONES

Shirley Brooks-Jones is somewhat of a legend, and not just to people of Columbus, but around the world. Her simple act of kindness spurred a lifetime of recognition and honor—her message resonating with everyone who came across her story.

Shirley was one of the passengers on Delta Flight 15, the plane that was rerouted from Frankfurt, Germany to Gander, Newfoundland, on 9/11.

“We were a few hours away from our destination when the pilot came on the speaker saying ‘There’s an emergency in the United States;’ a plane had just hit one of the twin towers in New York City,” Shirley said.

When Delta 15 landed at the airport in the small Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, the “plane people,” as they came to be called, sat on board for 28.5 hours in shock and silence, but not panic.

People from the Newfoundland town banded together to bring the 'plane people' food, towels and blankets, closing down schools and businesses, all to

help the plane people. “The kindness was unbelievable,” Shirley said. “When we left [4 days later], we knew we had to do something to return the favor.”

Learning that a lot of kids dropped out of school due to the lack of jobs available in the area, Shirley simply said, “Why don’t we start an endowed scholarship fund?” Shirley was the only one willing to ask the flight attendant [on their way back to their destination] to make an announcement about getting pledges from passengers, and “I haven’t been anonymous since then,” she laughed.

Those few minutes on the mic spurred talks all over the country (which Shirley still gives) and endless media attention on the weight that sheer kindness holds. Shirley has been back to Newfoundland 30 times since to present the scholarships to high school students, which are still ongoing.

Several years later, Shirley received a phone call from playwrights Irene Sankoff and David Hein, asking if she would be willing to talk about her experiences as they were putting together a musical about 9/11.

The hit musical, Come From Away, is a powerful showcase of trust and love in the face of all the horror that happened on that fateful day. The cast represented the plane people, the Newfoundlanders and of course, Shirley, who was portrayed by actor James Earl Jones the Second. “We became good friends and still text each other back and forth,” Shirley says about James. “He will sign off ‘Shirley’ and I’ll sign off ‘The Other Shirley,’” she laughed.

"I found the right way to get it done."

"Helping people feel empowered is rewarding."

Harriet Evatt and her husband William 1940

Today, the musical is still on Broadway, and has been shown in Columbus, Toronto, Australia, London and Ireland.

JENNY BECK

Jenny Beck is a licensed therapist and Executive Director of The Emily Program, the only residential eating disorder treatment center in Northwest Columbus that is nationally recognized for its personalized approach to eating disorder awareness and lifetime recovery. The program was born from a beloved doctor who treated young women at the old Harding Hospital, back in the 80s when little was known on how to treat women afflicted with body dysmorphia illnesses.

“Eating disorders bring a profound amount of mental, emotional and physical suffering,” Jenny says. “People with these illnesses are emotionally attuned, creative, intelligent and resilient; yet, they often lack compassion for themselves and doubt their worth.”

This raw truth fuels Jenny to do everything possible to see that patients make their way to a full recovery, no matter how long and difficult the road is to get there. “It is an honor to help people find freedom and healing in their relationships with food," she says. “Helping people move from feeling afraid, worthless and unacceptable to feeling hopeful, empowered and connected is an extremely rewarding way to spend one’s career.”

As for recovery, the improvements patients see from The Emily Program are profound. Jenny emphasizes the positivity that radiates from clients when they recover.

“I’ve had clients who leave unfulfilling jobs and start their own businesses, finally graduate from

high school and speak at youth groups or conferences about their own recovery journey,” she says.

HARRIET EVATT

Harriet Evatt, better known as the "Worthington Authoress," a title deservingly given to her as a result of her creative endeavors and philanthropic pursuits, was a champion for her community. From her dedicated volunteer work to sharing her written and illustrative talents, this Worthington lady is one in our history we shouldn't forget.

Harriet was a revered author and illustrator of young children’s books and chapter books for youth, books she didn’t begin writing until she was 45 years old and continued to do so until her passing at 91 years old.

She was known for her “engaging and creative stories” that drew on things she loved best, which provided inspiration for her poems, articles, short stories and books. She is quoted saying, “I like to write and draw, and you can do both in children’s books; that’s why I write for youngsters.”

In addition to providing children with fascinating stories under the genre “mysteries without crime,” Harriet was very active in the Worthington community. She participated in the Worthington unit of the Philharmonic Women’s Association, was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of St. John’s Episcopal Church, and a member of the League of American Penwomen, the Columbus Art League and the Ohio Watercolor Society.

On display now until June 30 at the Worthington Historical Society is a display titled “Meet Harriet Evatt: Worthington’s Authoress,” where residents can read more about her, as well as view select reproductions of her paintings on display at the Old Worthington Library.

SAY HELLO TO COLOR
OPEN HOUSE | HOME + DESIGN On trend jewel toned blues and greens 22
“People are tired of black and gray... pastels are coming back.”

-Keith Rupp, Residence Design Build

Spring breezes bring a refreshing change, inviting us to revitalize our living spaces with the vibrant creativity that the warmer months inspire. The transition between seasons is more than a shift in temperature—it's an opportunity to infuse our homes with new life, new themes and a fresh perspective. From timeless classics to contemporary boldness, this year's interior design trends cater to a wide spectrum of individual styles.

One of the summer’s biggest trends is an intentional use of bolder color throughout the home, says Keith Rupp, owner of Residence Design Build. Trending colors this season include a wide variety, from bright pastels and neons to deep jewel tones, all depending on what the homeowner likes. Bold tones can be found in all rooms of the house, with pastels specifically seen as a fun pop of color in lighting and plumbing fixtures.

“People are tired of black and gray,” Rupp says. “There’s new jewel tones of greens and blues, but pastels are coming back.”

Wallpaper is also back in fashion, particularly where it ties into an overarching theme of those bold color trends, says Rupp. The use of fun, patterned wallpaper in powder rooms and half-baths is a design choice his team is seeing more frequently. You can create cohesion with the rest of the home by choosing one or two shades from your wallpaper and utilizing these shades as paint colors for walls or cabinetry.

If bold colors aren’t your thing, you have plenty of other options to refresh your home. Warm shades of off-whites, “new earth tones” and natural and light wood are all popular choices this summer if a more neutral palette suits your taste better.

One of the newest design trends addresses the familiar problem of keeping a kitchen

spotless. A “dirty kitchen” (also known as a back kitchen, working butler’s pantry or modern scullery) allows your kitchen to remain spotless so you can prep messy-to-make meals behind the scenes. Similarly, walk-in “dirty pantries” provide a spot to prep outside of the main kitchen space and can be closed off to hide any mess.

And on the subject of easy cleaning, “induction cooktops are taking over,” Rupp says. They're sleek. They're precise. And they can boil water in about half the time of a conventional stove.

Also, backsplashes are now extending far beyond the space between the cabinets. Extended tile backsplashes are very much on trend in both kitchens and bathrooms, especially with bold patterns. “What we’re seeing a lot now are large format tiles,” says Carifa Tile owner Joe Dismuke, whose business handles all aspects of bathroom remodels. “Those are extremely popular because it’s a lot less grout you have to deal with…which minimizes maintenance and [the risk of] grout failure.”

Dismuke suggests selecting your tile based not only on aesthetics, but on ease of maintenance. Ceramic and porcelain tiles are available in many patterns and are very easy to clean and maintain. Natural stone, however, is far more challenging. “As beautiful as it is, you have to seal it and reseal it, and be extremely careful with your cleaning products because you could easily destroy the face of that stone,” Dismuke says. “It isn’t ideal to put it inside of a shower."

If you're ready for a tile refresh, you will first need to assess its condition. Dismuke recommends keeping an eye on any lifting or creaking tiles to ensure the seal is intact and call a professional to take a look if you’re unsure.

Tips for reaching out to an installer when upgrading your tile:

Dismuke advises to "get a few different quotes," and when you talk to an installer, ask them these three questions:

1. Ask about what type of warranty they offer. The state of Ohio requires a one-year warranty on tile installs. Carifa Tile provides a five-year warranty as well as an additional 10-15-year waterproofing warranty on shower systems.

2. Ask specifically about what kinds of products they use in installation. You want to make sure your installer is using quality products and not gluing your tile onto plywood or cement board incorrectly. Carifa uses Schluter waterproofing products, but there are other good products, too.

3. Ask how many tile projects like yours they've done in the last month or two. They should have done several. Tile is a specialty trade, and there are many contractors and handymen who do all kinds of projects, but you want to be sure they're experienced in tile installation. "It takes time to learn that skill, and it's not an easy process," Dismuke says.

Spring Floral Bowl

BRING THE BRIGHTNESS AND FRESHNESS OF SPRING INDOORS BY CREATING YOUR OWN FLORAL BOWL ARRANGEMENT.

Spring, come quickly! And if not, bring spring indoors anyway. Flowers brighten any room, any day of the year. No need to wait for a special occasion or holiday – give yourself permission to brighten everyday life with a bowl full of flowers. Place florals in an entryway, kitchen, living room space or even bathroom. Florals make any room come alive with pops of color and the smells of spring that’s just about ready to burst outside.

Consider this your personal invitation to play with flowers by creating your very own Floral Bowl Arrangement. Use any cereal bowl in the kitchen and a bundle of store bought flowers. For extra texture and depth, look for small spring branches and ornamental grasses found in your yard to pop into the arrangement, like I did here. Then, place your floral bowl in a place where you need that burst of joy most. Enjoy!

SEASONAL SETUP | HOME + DESIGN 28

Supplies:

• 1 bundle of flowers (about 24 stems) + floral food packet

• spring branches & ornamental grasses found in your yard (optional)

• 6” bowl (cereal bowl size)

• floral shears (or garden clippers, kitchen shears, even craft scissors in a pinch)

• 12” square cut chicken wire

• wire cutters

• garden gloves to protect your hands when forming chicken wire

• clear floral tape (scotch tape will also do)

• lazy susan to easily move your arrangement and work from all sides (optional)

Preparation & Assembly:

• First prepare the mechanics. The mechanics are the non-floral elements used to assemble a floral arrangement. These materials will act as a grid in which the flowers are built into to hold each stem in its place.

• Wearing garden gloves, cut chicken wire roughly into a 12” square. Loosely form the chicken wire into a ball and place inside the bowl.

• Use clear floral tape to make an X shape over the top of the bowl to hold the chicken wire securely into place. This will also give extra support when adding the floral elements later.

• Fill the bowl with water and mix in a flower food packet, if your flowers came with one.

• Begin to arrange floral elements into the bowl. As a general rule, you will want to start with the strongest, thickest stems and end with the most delicate stems. Here, I began with branches, then the largest base flowers followed by taller focal flowers, and finally delicate stems, grasses and wispy greens.

A Nonprofit Dedicated to Mentoring Young Artists

Art is the driver of so much. The clothes we wear, the music we listen to and the conversations we have with our peers all stem from art. Despite its cultural and societal relevance, the arts industry is largely underfunded and underrepresented, which means artistic individuals yearning to turn their passion into a career have an uphill battle to climb.

This is the point that Olivia Minamyer drives home through her nonprofit, Art is to Live, a beautiful program that helps high school students pursue the art industry of their dreams.

Olivia is the owner of Branch Beauty Studio in Worthington, a Green Circle salon (which means she recycles 99 percent of what she uses — even hair) designated to creating natural hair care, color and extensions to enhance a woman’s beauty.

A YOUNG WOMAN'S DETERMINATION TO PREPARE STUDENTS FOR A CAREER IN ART PAYS OFF

Olivia Minamyer, founder of Art is to Live

“We do things a little differently here,” Olivia says of her salon. “For example, there is no gratuity and I only use natural products.”

By looking at the adversity she faced growing up—being stereotyped to be poor and unsuccessful—she was fueled to make a difference in the lives of those longing to turn their love of art into successful career paths.

Here is our conversation.

CL : What drove you to start Art is to Live?

Olivia : I grew up in a small town in southeastern Ohio where there was a lack of opportunity, lack of diversity and where art wasn’t pushed or appreciated. I was always into hair styling and as I got older, I had no one in my court supporting me. The administration in my school, my softball coach and even my parents weren’t supportive of my wanting to become a cosmetologist. I was told I wasn’t "going to go anywhere" because I wanted to do hair. I was always thinking, “How do I weasel my way into the salon industry?” So I thought about obtaining a chemist degree.

I ended up going to cosmetology school in Wheeling, West Virginia and moved to Columbus afterward. I got to take an eye-opening business class where my professor asked: “If you had to leave Earth tomorrow, what legacy would you want to leave behind? Are you proud of the person you are and what you are doing?” That hit me hard. And I thought, there’s a lot of kids like me—kids who are passionate about a career in the arts but who lack support. [At 22], I decided to create a nonprofit that would give a scholarship to artistic kids.

CL : What does your art program entail?

Olivia : I mentor artists through four core values of success: self-evaluation, breaking stereotypes, collaboration and financial literacy. I teach my students about how student loans work and how to start budgeting, and I provide realistic expectations of what salaries can actually get you.

I want my students to know whether you’re a budding chef, designer, musician, cosmetologist, photographer or other type of artist, believe in yourself and that if you continue to do what you love, you will find success.

CL : What is your ultimate goal with Art is to Live?

Olivia: There are two sides—bringing awareness and helping students. People in the arts are such an integral part of our society, and they often do not get the recognition they should. I want to help set them up for a better life—a happier life.

CL : Why is art so important to you?

Olivia : Art hits every part of you—your mental side, your physical side, it hits all of your senses, makes you feel, and allows you to create. It allows you to connect with another person’s soul.

Olivia is currently taking nominations for her Art is to Live program. Students must be in high school, graduating before May 2025, in order to be eligible. Nominations can be sent directly to Olivia at oliviajominamyer@gmail.com.
