NATURALLY TREATING PAIN

In a Montessori Early Childhood classroom, highly trained teachers create a customized environment crafted to your child’s unique abilities, interests, and learning style.

This approach to learning is “hands-on.” Dr. Maria Montessori believed (and modern science has affirmed) that moving and learning are inseparable. In the prepared classroom, children work with specially designed manipulative materials that invite exploration and engage the senses in the process of learning. All learning activities support children in choosing meaningful and challenging work at their own interest and ability level. This child-directed engagement strengthens motivation, supports attention, and encourages independence with responsibility. Uninterrupted blocks of work time (typically 2+ hours in length) allow children to work at their own pace and fully immerse themselves in an activity without interruption. Your child’s work cycle involves selecting an activity, performing it for as long as it remains interesting, cleaning up the activity and returning it to the shelf, and making another work choice. This cycle respects individual variations in the learning process, facilitates the development of coordination, concentration, independence, and a sense of order while facilitating your child’s assimilation of information.

A Welcoming Space

A Montessori Early Childhood classroom feels more like a home than a school. You’ll see children happily working individually or in small groups, at tables or on the floor near small mats that delineate their own space. Specially designed learning materials are displayed on open shelves, easily accessible to the children. Classrooms also include low sinks accessible to the children, child-sized furniture, cozy spaces for quiet reading, reachable shelves with work available for free choice, and child-sized kitchen utensils so the students can eat, prepare, and clean up their snack on their own. Teachers gently guide students to help maintain the organization and cleanliness of this environment to keep it orderly and attractive and to help your child understand how to care for materials and clean up after themselves—skills you will be happy to observe carrying over in your home.

Saluting Our Women of Influence

This month, and in this Women of Influence issue, we celebrate all women. And of course with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on the moms… But it’s not just the biological mothers but the mother figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s also our aunts, our sisters, wives, grandmothers, daughters, teachers, mentors, our lifelong gal pals, and the women business owners and community leaders who add so much to our lives and to our communities.

As a woman-owned business myself, I love any opportunity to recognize the women in my life who just make life more rich and beautiful. In this issue, we salute Women of Influence from all different industries who have all touched the lives of so many people around them.  They are movers and shakers, builders and makers. They are both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood any other way.

I hope you’ll take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call or get your kids on a video call with the women in your life who deserve recognition. It only takes a minute to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them.

Thank you to all the women in our community who work so hard and serve so many.  And thank you to all the women in my life – You know who you are, and I wouldn’t be here without you!

WHO INSPIRED YOU TO BE A LEADER?

It came out of necessity, mostly.  I was a latch-key kid just wanting to give my parents one less thing to worry about, so I developed a strong sense of independence and self-reliance.  My parents led by example working hard to provide for the family, and I followed their lead recognizing that hard work gets results and is quite rewarding when you’re focused on helping other people. That long story short led me to where I am today in trying to be a solid example for all my clients and family who see me as a health-related resource.

HOW HAVE YOU BUILT CONFIDENCE OVER THE COURSE OF YOUR LIFE?

Trying new ideas, falling down, and getting back up again! ...a thousand times over. And over and over again to this day.

Dr. Maria Montessori was my inspiration for leadership and education! One of the first women in Italy to obtain a medical degree, she was a trailblazer whose philosophy and activism are still as relevant today as it was when she began her work for social justice more than 100 years ago. A devoted humanitarian, she was three-times nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for her advocacy efforts toward a more peaceful humanity.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF WOMEN LEADERSHIP?

Women in leadership should have a seat at the national and global table for negotiations toward equal rights, education, and social justice. Women in leadership can create holistic communities within their areas of expertise and passions!

Slow down, find your voice, and love yourself! Don’t be afraid to speak up, know your value and don’t settle for less than you’re worth. And for goodness’ sake, it’s okay to make mistakes! There’s no such thing as “being perfect.” Give yourself some grace.

I would say my Dad. He leads with integrity, humility, and compassion, yet maintains his convictions and strength of character. Whenever I’m faced with tough situations, I seek his advice, or think “How would my dad respond?”

Today women are more involved than ever in the workplace and organizations. Having a woman in leadership can be hugely beneficial, as an advocate and in counseling others.

I am a Christian, so I seek my purpose and meaning through my relationship with God. Even when I feel discouraged, my faith enables me to push forward and persevere. I’ve experienced a lot of trials in my life, but each one has refined me and helped me grow in wisdom.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR 24 YEAR OLD SELF?

Don’t care so much about material things. You can live a very happy, meaningful life with very little “stuff.” Money may make the world go ‘round, but it can’t make you truly happy. Oh, and stop eating so much fast food, Marie!

My mother - she was a thoughtful yet firm person who showed me that not only does hard work get you where you want to be but so do the people you surround yourself with.

Empowering other women is a special and most rewarding path of leadership.  In my opinion, it is not only shapes the women that most immediate to the leadership but it affects generations of young women as well, to become the most powerful person from the inside out.

HOW HAVE YOU BUILT CONFIDENCE OVER THE COURSE OF YOUR LIFE?

Resilience and confidence, both.  Having experienced a lot of loss early in life gave me the strength and taught me to be resilient.  Confidence was an early life lesson as I was an only child growing up in a single mother household.  We worked as a team and through her guidance and sure-footedness instilled confidence in my choices and path as I grew up.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR 24 YEAR OLD SELF?

SLOW DOWN AND SMELL THE ROSES!  Life is so short!  Enjoy and engage with the people that you love and make sure they know you love them.

May is the month we celebrate Mothers, so show your appreciation to all the Moms in your life with a special bottle of wine.

As we head into summer, the warm weather is perfect for enjoying rose and white wines. While Sauvignon Blanc from Sancerre and New Zealand are trending, summer is the perfect time to try interesting whites like Chenin Blanc from South Africa or the Loire Valley, Piquepoul or Roussanne from Southern France, or Grillo from Sicily. Cremant de Loire and Cava are quality sparkling white wines without the Champagne price tag. They also make fun spritzers!

There are plenty of refreshing roses from all over the world; look for ones made with enchanting grapes like Pinotage, Cinsault, or Sangiovese.

Head to your favorite local wine shop; whichever wine you choose, women will enjoy sipping a lighter wine that is perfect for our climate. Cheers to all the lovely ladies!

Recognizing Women of Influence Every Day

“I have been influenced by so many women who are the clients & coworkers of my studio! These women have led by example in their dedication not only to my studio, but to fitness over multiple years, and through pregnancies, injuries, and life lessons, the best of times and the worst of times.  I have learned what they need from me by watching their response to my teaching style. Thankfully my style has evolved over the years and I have reached a point where I see that the relationships built here are what these influential women value so much. Both younger and older women, high-performance athletes and those struggling with injury— all of them have (and continue to!) influence me, my capabilities for empathy, encouragement, understanding, motivation, patience, mental toughness & pure happiness. I see women not afraid to speak their minds,

experiencing the joys & struggles of movement and showing up for the camaraderie of a group class. Natural Treatments for Chronic Pain and Injury

Chronic pain affects millions of people and can greatly impact a person’s quality of life. Pain can interfere with sleep, mobility, productivity, and relationships and can cause chronic fatigue, difficulty sleeping, irritability, anxiety, and depression.

Medications used to treat pain such as Tylenol, Ibuprofen, narcotics, and steroids can have serious side effects affecting a person’s health and wellbeing. Many people do not realize that steroids that are commonly used to treat pain can actually cause more harm than good. Although steroids can provide immediate pain relief it is often temporary and can cause long term tissue damage.

Pain is generated from signals released from injured tissue. When the body is injured, it responds by sending repair cells to the area to heal the damaged tissue. If the body is not able to completely heal itself it can lead to chronic pain. Regenerative Medicine treatments focus on stimulating the body to heal itself and finish the healing process.

Case Study: Tracie was involved in a car accident 11/2020 and developed chronic neck and shoulder pain. She tried physical therapy, surgery, and steroid injections with little benefit.
