A Letter from Sydney

Howdy Friends!

My name is Sydney Johnson, and I am one of the contributing writers for Fayetteville City Lifestyle. I am originally from Austin, Texas and moved in 2020 when I began my freshman year at the University of Arkansas. I stepped into this city as a scared 18-year-old who missed her parents, but now as a post-grad, I'm proud to call NWA home! I slowly began to shed my Texas roots as the charm of Fayetteville won me over. One of my favorite aspects of this city is the diversity of activities offered. In my free time, you can find me strolling the Razorback Greenway, sippin’ coffee from Puritan, roaming the Fayetteville Public Library, or trying out the city’s hot dining spots.

As a member of the honors college, I was tasked with a creative thesis project at the culmination of my degree. Thus, I embarked on the journey to author the College Girl’s Guide to Fayetteville, AR. I wrote this with my scared 18-year-old self in mind as a tool for females attending the U of A to navigate an unfamiliar city. It includes everything from a curated coffee crawl to the best workout spots, photo ops, and more. After writing this book, I was approached by Gavin Magee to join the Fayetteville City Lifestyle team, and I had no idea the blessing that was in store. I am deeply passionate about showcasing the hidden gems of this city, and this publication has given me an incredible opportunity to do so!

Our team aims to intertwine the invisible threads of Fayetteville, crafting a masterpiece of stories woven together. Through interviewing locals, I have gotten a behind-the-scenes look at the individuals who make Fayetteville the city that it is. I cannot begin to articulate the honor it is to be a part of a mission that is so much bigger than myself! I hope that when you read these stories, you feel inspired, uplifted, and encouraged. My wish is that no matter how long you’ve been a Fayetteville resident, you see the city in a fresh light.

Keep Fayetteville Funky, SYDNEY JOHNSON, CONTRIBUTING WRITER

Having faced difficulty finding a resource to record memories concretely rather than in a smartphone album, Sarah Autry and Stephanie Beard-Peters built Duncan & Stone Paper Co., a business that offers a large variety of prompted journals. “We started looking at different ways of keeping our own memories of our kids,” says Sarah. “We got together in [Stephanie’s] driveway while our kids were playing with sidewalk chalk and started drawing out what the book would be that we would want.”

From turning Sarah’s pregnancy prayer cards into “Dear Baby” journals to several other products such as travel journals, recipe books, and anniversary journals, the business took off from there. Stephanie says, “There was a very small space in the market that we saw was empty, and we filled it.”

From prompts to presenting ideas with which to capture your memories, Duncan & Stone’s journals are a simple yet beautiful way to make memories. “You can easily capture these really important life milestones that you can keep forever,” says Sarah. “We don’t just want information passed down between people. We’re looking to connect families.”

These journals are made into family heirlooms, no matter the occasion or context. In Dear Son or Dear Daughter, you collect memories of your children for 18 years, turning the journal into a heartfelt gift. In the Legacy Journal, family stories of older generations can be recorded and passed down. Even in the Family Recipe Book, you can handwrite ingredients while also providing an accompanying story of a memory tied to the recipe.

The art of journaling is useful in a wide variety of instances, from family and friends to personal thoughts. Some people may struggle with topics to discuss in their journals, which is why Duncan & Stone’s prompts are so beneficial. The book does the difficult thinking for you, while you simply turn your memories into words and pictures.

“I started journaling when I was in eighth grade,” says Stephanie, “and I still have all of them. I’ve always loved journaling, but I would have never thought I would start a journal company.”

With a large percentage of Duncan & Stone’s customer base being women with similar lifestyles to Sarah and Stephanie, journals made perfect sense. “We know you, we see you, we are you. So, what do you want, and how can we give that to you?” The initial idea –drawn in driveway chalk – achieves the goal of connecting families through memories, much like Sarah and Stephanie have done with their friendship and families.

CONTINUED > 11 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/FAYETTEVILLE MAY 2024

“We refer to ourselves as “The Artist” and “The Boss Lady”,” says Sarah. “That has been part of what has made Duncan & Stone so successful… When we launched Duncan & Stone, we were both stay-at-home moms. I don’t know that either of us would have predicted that we’d ever be here. It’s really cool being able to look at the journey that started with our friendship and our joint desire to give this gift to families that we weren’t able to find.”

Although it is predominantly an E-commerce company, Duncan & Stone Paper Co. journals are found in several hundred boutiques nationwide. While Sarah runs more of the product design and creation sides of things and Stephanie covers day-to-day routines and number-crunching, they praise the guidance they were able to find while starting Duncan & Stone. With Stephanie’s husband coined the ‘connector,’ Duncan & Stone learned from the businesses around it. Sarah says, “Launching a business in a place like Northwest Arkansas is really amazing. We’ve received so much support and resources from other people.”

As Duncan & Stone states, their beautifully crafted products are made with an ‘intentional purpose:’ connecting families with keepsakes. Sarah emphasizes two important reasons she and Stephanie sought to start their business: “Capture the memories that matter most” and “Connect generations through the art of storytelling.” Prompted journals add value to memories by providing a concrete resource to look back on. You’ll cherish being able to see the signatures of relatives, look back on the stories that led your parents to one another, and even laugh at the embarrassing moments from your childhood.

You can find Duncan & Stone’s collection of journals on Amazon, Etsy, duncanandstone. com , or one of the many local boutiques holding their product.

HANDCRAFTED

In the back of the gallery of David Adams Jewelry, there is a door that leads to a hallway. If this were the usual jewelry store, that hallway might lead to a meeting room or a place to store incoming items. But, David Adams Jewelry is one of the rare jewelry stores in the country to handcraft its own creations.

David Adams: From Apprentice to Master Craftsman
“I knew I wanted to do it as soon as I stepped into that guy’s shop.”

While his daughter Brittany tends to those customers interested in having their designs handmade, David is back in this workshop at the end of the hallway. There, a fire is burning. David stands over charred bricks with a blazing torch. Tools surround him on the tables. Burnishers. Pliers. Anvils. Dapping blocks. Wires. Mandrels.  Meanwhile, metal is melting under extreme temperatures and then being reformed into designs from his customers’ imagination.

Along the wall next to David, there are a row of jeweler’s benches. Each one of these desks is designed to provide a space to perform the intricate details in crafting jewelry. But, at the center of his workshop, there is one bench special to David.

He got it at his first job as an apprentice goldsmith. Originally from Santa Cruz, California, David

found an opportunity to work for stonesetter Joseph Sauer in nearby Aptos.  David said that a lightbulb went off in that first moment entering the store. “I knew I wanted to do it as soon as I stepped into that guy’s shop,” he said. David said it was the diligent, hands-on, and creative nature that drew him in. There with Sauer, he would sweep the floor and learn the techniques required, like stone setting, engraving, and alloying metals. But, after six months, He and Joe decided it was time for David to have his own bench.

Lacking the money for one, David found a friend who would build it in exchange for work.  David would do landscaping for months and help him sand the wood before finally getting the bench he would work on for over 40 years.

At the other end of David Adams Jewelry, there is a painting special to his journey.  In the corner of the painting, it reads the name “Feriozzi.”  David began working for goldsmith and jewelry craftsman Orlando Feriozzi in Carmel in his mid-20’s. Feriozzi taught him an art of hand fabrication that few people practice today in jewelry.

David said this period of his life was “an opportunity of a lifetime that taught me so much of what I know.”  But, after 5 years, Feriozzi decided it was time for David to expand his experience in the field. After applying to places all over the country, David received plane tickets in the mail to Fayetteville, Arkansas.  After visiting, he received an offer to work at a jewelry store in Fayetteville. After accepting, he moved to Northwest Arkansas in 1992.

After David left this role, he started working out of a garage in a small home in North Fayetteville and then a startup space on the square. He would collect repair work from local jewelry stores, work on them, and then return them. His continuous hard work led him to the space where David Adams Jewelry sits now, on W Center and N Block Ave. During this time in the early 90s, however, David wasn’t exactly sure if he should stay in Arkansas. But, one day at the Walton Arts Center display of his creations, he happened to see a painting flash by with the name “Feriozzi” on it. He asked the woman about the painting, and she said it was a picture of a street in Rome. That is where Orlando Feriozzi’s first store was. “That was the last sign,” he said. He knew he was home in Fayetteville.

Mother’s Rings- “From the heart to the hand, as if your child wrote their name for the very first time.”

Back in his workshop, David has many beautiful ring molds that he’s held onto from years of design.  Yet, there is one creation that stands out among the rest. It is not the most elaborate, but it is the most meaningful: a “Mother’s Ring”

In 2008, during the recession, many businesses had a difficult time staying afloat.  During this time, however, around the time of Mother’s Day, David created a concept that would be special for mothers. Each ring held a place for the name of a child.

His message to them was, “From the heart to the hand, as if your child wrote their name for the very first time.”  David said that, soon after, he got 300 orders in just one day, and orders wouldn’t stop for years. “I’m telling you, that saved my store,” he said.

Few jewelry stores have a workshop like this, with a passionate and talented craftsman like David Adams.  David said he could stay back in his shop all day because of the joy of creating beautiful pieces for customers’ special moments.

HOW KATHY THOMPSON’S TALENTS HAVE GIVEN FAYETTEVILLE DECADES OF STUNNING ART AND DESIGNS

Few people are able to make a living with their passion. Fewer are able to also make a community impact. Kathy Thompson is one of those few.

Originally from El Dorado, she moved to Fayetteville in 1976 with her son. Thompson said that art became an obvious path after she moved to Fayetteville.

CONTINUED > 23 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/FAYETTEVILLE MAY 2024

“It’s never been about the money,” she said. “This is just the work that I want to do.” Since then, Thompson has worked in multiple disciplines and spaces in art: pottery, contemporary painting, collage, interior design, curation, and more.  Each one of these areas has been a blessing to Fayetteville.  From a piece at Washington Regional called “Arkansas Color” to helping design Arsaga’s all around Fayetteville to providing pieces at Blair Library to curating shows at the Walton Arts Center, Thompson’s passion has created beauty for many people to enjoy.

One discipline at the core of her passion is teaching.  For over two decades, Thompson has worked with students of all ages helping them explore their creative talents. She said, “I love teaching…I never thought of it as laborious; getting kids to have fun by looking at the world in a new way.”  Thompson said she never imagined that many of her young students would go into design and architecture fields, because she was just teaching them to have fun.

Fayetteville is fortunate to have an artist with such talent, work ethic, and passion.

“I HOPE TO PLANT LITTLE SEEDS TO WOMEN OF ALL AGES TO FOLLOW THEIR DREAMS.”

- MAGGIE OWENS, PRESLEY PAIGE

The first stop is Presley Paige, a specialty paper, party, and gift shop owned by Maggie Owens. “I can’t remember a time in my life when I didn’t want to own a store”, she states. As a preteen, she watched a woman in her community open a retail shop, which sparked a dream of being a female business owner herself. Little did she know, this would become reality in 2020. Maggie describes Presley Paige as experiential. Her team is composed of girls with grit, artistic abilities, and out-of-the-box ideas. Each year, they prepare for “Pinkmas”, a holiday extravaganza that is anticipated for months. Maggie hopes to curate experiences that inspire others.

Next up, pinkHouse Alchemy, a small-batch simple syrup shop founded by Emily Lawson. Back in 2012, Emily decided to concoct syrup with lavender from the Fayetteville farmer’s market. At the time, she lived in a 100-year-old pink house. Thus, pinkHouse was born! While the brand has achieved international recognition, each syrup is still handcrafted in Fayetteville, as pinkHouse collaborates closely with local farmers, creating flavors inspired by the Ozarks. Emily wants people to walk into the space and know that it is safe and inclusive, with high-quality products. From cocktails to coffee, baked goods to bottled syrups, pinkHouse invites you to make yourself at home.

We complete the trio with Pink Fern, a plant-owner’s paradise. Lindsey Neely was inspired by her mom’s eye for art and love of estate sales. Lindsey loves the thrill of the hunt when finding plants and pieces to hold them. She combines unique plants with second-hand finds for a one-of-a-kind experience. She says that “everywhere you turn there’s something to pique your interest.” Her mission is to reinforce the importance of shopping small, and she invites you to the grand opening on May 11th to check out the space.

Fayetteville is lucky to have these women-owned shops to impact the community and beyond. Their unique flair, touching stories, and kind employees make for an exceptional shopping experience, all while showing young girls how to dream big. Pay “Pink Row” a visit to support locally, and leave feeling inspired.

Ladies’ DAY IN FAY

GOT THE GIRLS IN TOWN? WE’VE CURATED THE PERFECT ITINERARY OF WHAT TO DO!

MUST SEE | LIFE + CULTURE
32

Hey ladies! As the author of the College Girl’s Guide to Fayetteville, AR, I have spent loads of time uncovering Fayetteville favorites.

I LOVE playing the role of a tour guide when friends visit! However, sometimes it can be a challenge to plan a day of rest amidst the hustle and bustle of life. Luckily, I have curated the perfect itinerary to bookmark for your next ladies’ day in Fay. From the city’s best eats and drinks to my favorite boutiques, look no further.

Morning: Start your day with some morning movement at Barre3. This studio combines cardio, strength training, and stretching for a fun, energizing experience; not to mention the instructors are the definition of girlboss. If you’re not an early riser - they offer mid-morning classes too!

Brunch: It’s time to eat! Refuel after your workout at Hail Fellow Well Met. The restaurant derives its name from an old English greeting that was used to welcome others, regardless of social status, hence they embody the ultimate hospitable experience. The interior is aesthetic,

the food is uniquely delicious, and they have a very friendly staff. My personal favorites are the “Breakfast Sammy” and the Terracotta Latte.

Shopping: Time for some retail therapy at the historic downtown square! Explore the plethora of shops and locally owned boutiques, with two must-visits: Darcy Apparel and Riffraff. Darcy offers elevated basics and stylish home goods, while Riffraff is a renowned Arkansas boutique. Saturdays are especially pristine as you can enjoy the bustling Farmers Market with local goods and live music.

CONTINUED > 33 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/FAYETTEVILLE MAY 2024

Activity: Get creative and bond with your girls at Heirloom Candle Bar. Fayetteville’s make-your-own candle experience allows for conversation, creativity, and best of all, a keepsake from the day. Choose your vessel, pick the perfect scent, and pour your own custom candles - a fun activity and a lasting memory! Pro tip: save some bucks on “Thrifty Thursdays” by bringing your own vessel.

Afternoon: Treat yourselves to an afternoon of pampering at Fizz Facial Bar and Drybar. Fizz Facial offers a variety of facials to suit your skin type, while Drybar provides the best blowouts in Arkansas. I ask for the “Southern Comfort” with

extra volume, my go-to blowout for special occasions. Drybar and Fizz Facial are both perfect spaces for a group gathering, as they allow you to spend time with friends while unwinding.

Happy Hour: Now that you’ve treated yourself to an afternoon of aesthetic indulgence, enjoy a handcrafted cocktail at Feed and Folly’s rooftop. Soak in the stunning Ozark hills while sipping on a delicious drink - perfect for enjoying Fayetteville’s patio weather.

Dinner: For your final stop, head to Pizzeria Ruby. This East Coast-style pizza joint is a must-try. There simply are no words to describe the caliber of pizza

this spot serves; you just have to try it to believe it. Their massive pies are perfect for sharing, and the “Truffle Pig” and “My Spicy Italian Boyfriend” are truly legendary. Don’t forget to indulge in their seasonal gelato for the perfect ending!

The Wrap-Up: This itinerary is a starting point and you should feel free to mix and match it for a personalized experience. The key is not to cross everything off but rather to have fun with your friends and explore Fayetteville’s vibrant offerings. Cheers to your next ladies’ day in Fay!

CULINARY CREATIONS FOOD +

BEVERAGE

Making homemade bread is coming back, and while the convenience of buying a pre-made loaf is readily available, there is nothing like the taste of a warm, homemade loaf right out of the oven. This easy-to-follow recipe is exploding with flavor and is simple to make.

FOCACCIA

This recipe is quick and easy to make with just a few simple steps. It tastes great on its own, but dipping it in olive oil infused with fresh herbs adds an extra level of flavor.

INGREDIENTS:

• 1 ¾ cups warm water

• 2 ½ teaspoons sugar

• 1 package active dry yeast

• 4 cups flour

• 2 teaspoons salt

• 4 tablespoons olive oil

• Optional:

• Fresh rosemary

• Coarse sea salt

• Fresh pressed garlic

INSTRUCTIONS:

Use a stand mixer with a fitted dough hook, and stir together the water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast on top and stir again. Set mixture aside for 5 minutes. Mixture should be foamy. Next, add the flour and salt and mix on low until a shaggy dough forms. Increase speed and mix for an additional 4-5 minutes. Brush a large bowl with olive oil. Transfer the dough to the bowl and cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a damp towel. Set aside for about 1 to 1 ½ hours until the dough has doubled in size. Brush a 9x13-inch baking dish with 2 tablespoons of oil. Uncover the dough and rub hands with olive oil. Slide your hands under the dough and fold it onto itself. Continue to work your way around the edge of the bowl, folding the dough onto itself until there is a ball that you can lift from the bowl. Place the dough in the prepared pan and press the dough to the edges. Cover the pan with plastic wrap or a damp towel and set aside to rise for about 45 minutes until the dough has doubled in size.

Preheat the oven to 425°F. Drizzle the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil over the dough. Rub your hands with olive oil and use your fingers to make indentions on the surface of the dough. Sprinkle it with salt and rose mary and any desired toppings. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until golden brown.

Uniting Women and Impacting Communities

Brooke Robinson Fit influences health through encouragement and growth

Brooke Robinson encourages positive fitness. “I took classes that felt very boot camp-like,” says Brooke. “I struggled with having a positive influence to say, ‘You’re perfect the way you are.’” Brooke Robinson Fit offers exercises on its website and app. Brooke’s involvement in sports, including the University of Arkansas Pom Squad in college, influenced her to live an active lifestyle. She aims to push women to fight for strength, not traditional standards.

“I like to call it ‘Fitness Magic’ when the workout, the music, and the people become one,” says Brooke. “When it comes together, it’s like the top of the world.”

Backgrounds in theater, film, and photography helped Brooke film workouts. She says, “I love to entertain as much as I love to encourage. Give me a room of people or a camera, turn on the music, and I can make it up.”

Brooke worked to bring together groups of women for training, even encouraging meetings in church parking lots and neighborhood parks. “In my attempt to create community, [women everywhere] are also being brave in creating a community. Being a leader of women, I feel so honored that [participants] would want to work out with me or press play on my videos.”
