WELCOME TO LEWIS FARMS FEMALE SALE Welcome to our Leading Ladies Female Sale. It’s been 8 years since our last female sale and will be a number till our next. Jordan and Kyle have dug whole heartedly into our program. Kyle & Jordan’s enthusiasm in this sale has inspired even an old dog like me. In the big picture of the global beef industry all the signs are pointed in the right direction for stability with profitability for the future. I would like to thank Frank and Heather Misek for their years of effort in our operation, and wish them and their family well in Lethbridge at the government research farm. A special thank you to Randy Sanderson, for helping us out, your stockmanship and determination during your stay in Alberta is much appreciated and respected. Randy, Debbie and their family are from Spud Island Farms in P.E.I. From everyone on the farm we look forward to hosting you on Thursday December 1st. Welcome to the 2011 Leading Ladies Sale. While selecting open calves and bred heifers for this event, many thoughts and ideas came to mind. Choosing young stock while bearing in mind our own replacements yet providing the maximum amount of quality for our customers selection. When the hammer drops, I can firmly say both age categories are holding nothing back in flesh and in pedigree.

Thank you for taking the time and interest in our program and feel free to call anyone of us at anytime regarding the cattle.
Our cow herd is who we are. They define us; they are our backbone and our production machines. Without our cow herd there would be no bull sale on the last Saturday in February every year, there would be no replacement females to carry on traditions and keep up with the current markets and trends. Needless to say we are extremely proud of our cow herd. The sale on December 1 will consist of the best female progeny from our cow herd; the top breds and heifer calves and the very best matings from our embryo bank. We literally have held nothing back and I hope that shows in the quality of the offering. We have done the catalogue in cow families instead of sire groups for the easy ability to see the strength behind these young females and what they were bred to become. We have spent a lot of time this summer picturing, not only the sale cattle, but our cowherd as well. They always say a picture is worth a thousand words so we will let the cattle speak for themselves through their pictures. We have bred the yearling heifers the way we would have if we weren’t having the sale and we strive on making sure we use super calving ease bulls that still throw in a touch of performance. The heifer calves are a representation of some of our new and up coming herd sires . There is also a handful to represent what our two year olds are capable of. We stand behind these heifers as we do our bulls and our commitment to you, our customer, is just as strong. Looking back on our last female sale, held in 2003, many things have changed and grown. Our papered herd has doubled in size, calving 900 cows today. Roughly half in the spring and half in January. With this gradual increase in numbers our strive for quality and consistency remain unchanged. We, as always and never more than now, are optimistic with the beef business and the potential future ahead. Simmental and Angus have been the breeds, are still the breeds and will continue to be the dominant forces in the beef business.

Terms - The terms of the sale are cash, cheque or credit card at the sale location unless satisfactory credit arrangements have been made previous to the sale. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement is made. Should any purchaser fail to settle for their purchase, Lewis Farms reserves full power to resell the animal to the best advantage, either publicly or privately, without further notice. Any loss arising from such resale together with keep and all other expenses shall be payable by the defaulter. All settlements must be made with the clerks of the sale before any cattle will be released.

Disputes - In case of disputes, bidding will be re-opened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision in such matters will be final.
HEALTH
All females are up to date with their Blackleg and Live IBR vaccinations. Yearling heifers will have had both shots of the Scourguard vaccine by sale day. All bred female will be re-preg checked closer to the sale.
Purchaser’s Risk - Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Animals will be cared for at the purchaser’s risk for a reasonable length of time. Announcements - Announcements from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are therefore cautioned to pay attention to any such announcements.
DELIVERY
We will coordinate and assist in the delivery arrangements. American sold cattle will be transported to the border at our cost and the rest will be arranged and payed for by the buyer. There will be a $100 discount per head for customers taking females home on sale day.
Registry of Cattle - The proper Registration or Recordation paper, as the case may be will be transferred and furnished to the buyer for each animal after settlement has been made.
JUNIOR DISCOUNT
There will be a 5% discount on heifer calves for Junior Simmental, Angus and 4H members. Registration papers will be transfered to Junior members.
Choice lots and Interests
We have not indicated in the catalogue which females we will be retaining an interest in. We will know by sale day and it will be indicated on the supplement sheets and on our website. We may also decide to sell a few more heifers as choice lots come sale time. Feel free to visit with us regarding keeping interests and the choice lots.
Settlement - No incidental expenses such as feed, care, A.I. signing fees, interest, veterinary charges, etc. will be charged by either party when making settlement. If the seller is successful in proving the animal in question to be a breeder, then said animal will be reclaimed by the purchaser. Should the seller fail to prove the animal a breeder, then the buyer is guaranteed a satisfactory replacement. In no event shall the seller be responsible for more than the purchase price. Should a dispute arise over the quality of a replacement animal, Lewis Farms will appoint a mediator. Accidents - Although every precaution will be taken to protect the safety and comforts of buyers, neither Lewis Farms, the auctioneer, or association assumes any responsibility in this matter, and disclaims any liability, legal or otherwise, in the event of accidents or loss of property. Rights and Obligations - The above terms and conditions of the sale shall constitute a separate transaction and the rights and obligations of the two. By attending Lewis Farms Female Sale, you are granting permission for your picture to be used for promotional and advertising purposes relating to the Lewis Farms Female Sale.

It’s only fitting that Amber holds the first page in the Leading Lady’s catalogue. She is 12 yrs old and still rules the pastures here at LFE as the greatest female we may have ever bred! From her depth of body to massive rib shape to her sheer amount of natural muscling and amount of bone, Amber is extremely hard to fault. She can be bred to any bull and produce progeny that is a step ahead in the cattle industry. Her female progeny are probably her greatest claim to fame with their ability to pass on her ideal udder type and milking ability. We have only sold 3 Amber females and one flush in 12 years. So having 6 lots that are members of this family truly speaks of the quality of this sale!

Here are the big sisters to Lot 1. These 2 breds each carry a tad bit different characteristics and are bred differently. 95 is super clean made with tons of eye appeal, she’s soft made and a total sweetheart. 166 is wide topped, big ribbed and has the herd bull producer look to her. Take a look at 114W and 120W on the page across, they are both Braves out of an Amber daughter. Proof is right there on the potential that these two heifers carry!

We calved out the first group of Superior females this spring and they all had correct udders and did a great job in their first year of production. There’s nothing sweeter then a black blaze face heifer calf and luckily 114 is more than just a pretty face! She comes from the same dam that produced Hot Iron, who was a high seller in the bull sale to Labatte, Oberle and Soderglen. Well we’ve talked about how important the Amber’s are to us on the red side and the Charo’s are the match to the Amber’s on the black side. The Charo cow family has the most members in our donor line up with 7 cows currently being flushed. They are our go to family for not only herd bull producers but females as well. When we flushed 606R to Superior little did we know we would love the combination so much that we would be putting the combination in for 3 years. 606R was the bred full sister on choice with Ready to Tango, they took the calf and we got to bring the bred back home. We got 3 heifers and 3 bulls the first year out of her Superior flush. One is Smoke House and was a high seller to KBR Cattle Co. The 3 heifers are possibly my favorite black 2 yr olds! The second group of the embryos gave us another 3 heifers and 2 more bulls. One heifer sold last fall at Farmfair and the choice was not easy to put both these heifers in this sale. Both are extremely clean through their fronts and round in their make up. They are as quiet as they come and will be easy to find sale day.

Lakota’s first 3 daughters sell as lots 38 A & B and 68. These two heifers are opposite in color and are different sired but there was no way we could choose which one is our favorite so we’re giving you the hard task. 73 is out of Tanker and is Homo Black. She is powerful, has eye appeal to burn and is as long spined as you can get. 128 is out of the up and comer Entourage and is the natural calf out of 628R. Footnote for 38A & 38B: The last of the choice lots. These two flush mates are excellent representatives of the Lakota calves. 29S’s production record speaks for itself. Her first bull was our favorite red calving ease bull in the 2009 bull sale. His name is Baseman and there are a handful of heifers in the sale out of him. Her second calf is Ridgeline who is a semen sire in the Bouchard Livestock line up. Then we come to her flush of Lakota calves. It was these calves hitting the ground when we knew Lakota had done his job. 56 and 138 are big middle, smooth made and stout when you get behind them. Again one is black and one is red to provide more options in this choice lot.

We’ve talked about a few cow families that are rich in history here at the farm. The Fortunes are another one of our long term, productive cow families. The 96M female has really risen out of the ashes and taken the family to the next level. As we talk about the 199X female she is another one of our “special” heifers and has really impressed us over the summer. The Peppers are normally a red based family but both heifers in the sale are black! Funny how that works some times. 99Y is possibly the most complete heifer calf from top to bottom in the offering. She’s stout made, high volume, clean in her lines and is as hairy as they come. Her structure is flawless and she’s a joy to watch on the move. Her mother may be the most complete Rock daughter we have in production and also raised Entourage. 99Y is an Advance daughter and we think is following the same maturing pattern as last years Heaven Sent female. She’s only getting better with age and has a life time of production ahead of her.

148X is a mellow made heifer who is as complete as they come. Deep sided, wide topped and sound in her structure. Her mother is another great Bravado daughter, who we could not have asked for more from when she weaned 148X off. She’s bred Stubby just to create even more excitement to this great heifer.

Fullblood Simmentals A year ago we had a big change in our winter breeding cows. We made the choice to sell all of the Fullblood winter calvers. Not an easy choice as the Fullbloods are what started the LFE registered Simmental Herd. Once the decision was made however, it was an easy choice to send them two hours east of us to Irma, home of Mark Land and Cattle. Lenny has been a long time commercial bull customer of ours and was starting to play around with a few registered cows. He is very passionate about the Simmental breed and is an outstanding cattleman. We know the cows are well looked after and couldn’t be happier when we see how well they are doing at Lenny’s. This group of Fullblood females is from the heart of Lenny’s herd, some were bred by us and some are 100% bred and raised by Lenny. We are still in the Fullblood circle as we kept all the summer calving Fullbloods. The bull calves will all come back to LFE for our annual bull sales as they are still a key part of our sale and history.
