It is something to witness all aspects of agriculture really firing on all cylinders. Never have we had this solid a foundation in all sectors of agriculture. It is fantastic and a tremendous lure to bring youth back into the fold, and what could be better. With our youth heavily entrenched in livestock production at LFE, you can rest assured we are here for the long haul. The cattle business is balanced around long term acquaintances and where hand shakes are still valued as your bond. Our breeding program is focused on moderate framed, easy fleshing, good uddered, sound footed, efficient cattle that can thrive in some of the harshest environments. We graze our mother cows for as many months as possible, whether it be stock piled grass or swaths. The bulls are fed a practical, high roughage ration that is designed to work in a ranchers environment. We are proud of the accomplishments that our genetics have made throughout the beef industry. We strive to produce the best, to make your operations more profitable and successful. Our extra age portion of bulls continues to be the choice for many ranching operations. Their tough and durable with the same explosive growth genetics as the yearlings. We offer many similar bred, look alike bulls and these bulls will sell in every ones price budget. Ken As a family and a team of employees, consultants, nutritionists and every one else that plays a part in the start to finish of these cattle’s life time, we work hard to bring the best products to the sale. The bulls are from generations of solid and functional cow families. We feel everything starts from the cow. For us if momma isn’t everything you want her to be, why is she still in production? We don’t have a time limit on our cows’ production years, as long as she is able to produce a calf that meets our goals at every selection time and stays bred with in our short 45 day breeding window, she will live out her life here. We are proud to say we have cows with longevity of 13 years and still going strong. On our herd bull side, we are strong believers in trying to use herd bulls that were developed here at home. Yes, we do realize that we need to bring in fresh new genetics to keep our gene pool current and refreshed but as soon as we breed a son that we feel is better then his sire we go to using him. We then at least know the cow family side very well and it makes us very proud to say there are 25 Herd Bulls with sons in this year’s sale carrying the LFE tattoo! Our herd bull battery was given a huge boost this spring with the return of Advance from North Dakota. You will see he’s had a huge impact on this year’s sale with as many sons as any and with the largest number of feature bulls. We are excited to have him walking the pastures of LFE! Our walking herd bull battery would not be what it is today without our partners on these great bulls.
Welcome to our 28th annual bull sale. Times have been super positive over the last 365 days. Fortunately due to the abundance of rain and sun our crops that didn’t come across hail, grossed huge yields. The potatoes in particular flourished in last fall’s harvest. Grandpa says he hadn’t seen a spud crop like that in 20 years. A few adjustments have been made; the bulls switched form barley silage over to corn silage. We have heard tremendous benefits the corn brings and were anxious to try it. Also as our land base grows in our summer program so does the amount of cows we are able to manage. Bringing you more than ever extra age based bulls that our fellow cattlemen desire. As always we offer our best to you in this event. The first sons of new elite herd sires; Bundi, Poker Face, and Broker ignite the Simmental division. While Ayers Rock, and Legacy step into the spotlight of the red and black angus sector. We are humbled to announce the first sons of Justified born and bred at Mark Land & Cattle, to make headlines in this performance, stacked set of full blood bulls. Names like Advance, Stubby, and Lakota have many sons in this year’s offering and represent some of the key bulls we offer to you. I’d like to extend a special recognition to Leonard Mark and family and the Kotowich families for their contributions to the full blood division. Leonard and Paul are sharp cowmen that bring us a better set of bulls every year. We are very thrilled to continue our partnership with them as we move forward. The bulls are raised on grass and mothers milk. They are developed on a high roughage ration from weaning until the sale. They are not fat, however stout made, athletic bulls that are ready to breed. These bulls carry our own personal guarantee and we strongly recommend purchasing Lewis warranty or outside insurance. If you plan on breeding to heifers, the calving ease bulls are identified with a 3 *** rating. As we approach the 23rd of February we are very confident in our bulls, they are bred and raised with our customers in mind. The extra age bulls have been developed slowly and are a sound, functional set of bulls who really look like mini herd bulls at this age. The yearlings had a great summer on their moms with huge amounts of grass always available. They actually stayed on the cows longer then they ever have because of the amount of grass that was available. Throughout the fall the bulls have gained well and we’ve had a pretty good winter , which has allowed the bulls to develop on a great path. The bulls are in their respected color and age groups, allowing for great comparisons when selecting a herd bull. We have done our best to provide bulls for all sectors, with 3 different colors of Simmentals and 2 colors of Angus, there’s bulls that are calving ease based and others that are all about performance. Balanced nutrition with the emphasis on forage intake is the focus of the 2013 Lewis Bull feeding program. This custom feeding program promotes health, longevity and optimum growth. Each ration provides 100% of the bull’s requirements for trace minerals, vitamins, protein and energy. Lewis Bulls are slowly moved up on feed to allow the rumen to adapt to additional grain. In all rations there is plenty of roughage (cereal silage and hay) to maintain a healthy rumen. A healthy rumen is essential for day to day health and ultimately longevity. All rations have added water to minimize sorting. Our goal is for the first bite of the ration to be the same composition as the last bite during the day. Lewis Farms guarantees to sell you a bull that is structurally sound, a bull that has passed a semen test done by a licensed veterinarian. Should any Lewis bull fail to be a satisfactory breeder, unable to physically service a cow or heifer, he will be replaced with a bull of equal value. Should this not be possible, an adjustment will be made to reflect the value of the bull in question or a credit will be given towards the purchase of another bull. we guarantee to provide you with a sound breeding bull We, however, will not provide replacement or adjustment for physical injury or mismanagement. Bearing this in mind, we stress the importance of Third Party Livestock Insurance or Lewis Farms Breeding Season Warranty on your bulls. Our Warranty Program offers a warranty in a language you can understand. While under our warranty your bull is covered for injury, sickness or death. We will service your needs with another bull, credit or make a cash settlement. COVERAGE - During Breeding Season: In case of loss, Lewis Farms will not be responsible for anything up and above the purchase price of the bull. We will be cover 80% of the original value, less salvage when possible. Lewis Farms is responsible to make settlement of an approved warranty claim with a suitable replacement. As we look forward to our 28th Annual Bull Sale, we reflect on past sales. Over the past 27 years we have sold over 3600 bulls to cattlemen. We provide quality bulls at affordable prices. There are bulls for everyone. The bulls we offer are the complete top end of the calf crop. Usually at least 75% of our bulls sell to repeat customers.
COMMITMENT TO CUSTOMERS
VOLUME DISCOUNTS: A minimum of 2 bulls purchased can trigger the volume discount. The discount will start at 2% beginning at $15,000 dollars and will increase by 1% every $10,000 dollars, up to a maximum of 7% on the entire purchase. The discount will only apply to bulls that are paid for in full on sale day. Absentee buyers will have 30 days extension for their discounts. Partnership bulls will not apply.
BIRTH WEIGHT INFORMATION
Calving ease is most often related to birth weight of a bull. This is partly true, but there are other factors that influence calving ease, like nutrition, gestation, and calf shape. The cow influences at least 50% of the calves birth weight and shape. The mature size of the cow is an important consideration. You can relate cow sizes to your own program. On average our cow sizes will be larger, which in turn will amount to less birth weight on smaller cows. EPD’s for calving ease and birth weight accompany each lot.
POLLED vs HORNED vs SCURRED Some misconceptions or misunderstanding with regards to polled cattle. I will try to clarify this subject with a few simplified points. 1. The polled gene is dominant to the horned gene. 2. Homozygous polled means all offspring will be polled. 3. Double polled means both parents are polled, increasing the likelihood of the offspring being homozygous polled. 4. Scurs are the result of an independent gene unrelated to either the horned or polled gene. 5. Scurs is sex linked, being dominant in bulls and recessive in heifers, hence we see more scurred bulls than heifers. 6. A horned animal may carry the scurred factor but is masked by the horned gene.
COLOR TESTING
A number of the black bulls have been tested for expression of color. Black bulls can be homozygous black which means progeny will always be black when bred to red cows. If they are carrying the red gene, some calves will be red. If the cows are red or black they are red carriers as well. Any bulls which have been tested for color will be indicated in the catalogue, or announced if homozygous black.
SEMEN INTEREST A number of bulls, which will be identified either in the sale catalogue or by sale time, will fall into one of two catagories. These catagories will be, retaining an in herd semen interest or retaining an interest in the bull. You will collect 100% salvage on the bull in all cases. Semen will be collected at the owners convenience and our expense.

POLLED TESTING
A number of the Simmental bulls in the sale have been genetically tested to determine whether they are homozygous polled (will throw all polled calves). When both parents are polled there is a large possibility their offspring are homozygous polled especially if one parent is homozygous polled. The genetic marker has been identified so now with a DNA blood test they can be identified before being sold. The results on bulls tested prior to cataloging for True Polled will be printed with the Lot information. The results will be one of these three: Homozygous Polled, Heterozygous Polled, Inconclusive (unable to determine, quite commonly proved to be Homozygous). As well there are Homozygous Polled bulls marked in the catalogue because we have both parents determined.
Management tools, to help control reproductive disease in your herd are: A. Purchase virgin bulls from purebred breeders. B. Keep and maintain a relatively closed herd. C. In subsequent years - absolutely do not rent or purchase mature bulls and cull all open cows. D. Follow good biosecurity measures. E. Vaccinate for the reproductive diseases in your area. BVD and IBR should for sure be vaccinated against and others such as Vibrio, Lepto and Trich depend on your herd situation and geographic area.
BREEDING SOUNDNESS EVALUATION
We look at 3 factors: Spermatozoal motility, morphology and scrotal circumference as well as doing a physical exam and watching the bull walk. During collection of semen we closely check the penis and inspect for signs of abnormalities. All bulls sold who exceed one year of age will have been classified as satisfactory in all categories and give us all indications they will go out for you and become a good breeding herd bull. All scrotal measurements will be posted on the supplement sheets. The only components which are not tested are the libido (sex drive) and the bulls ability to breed. This component is up to you, the purchaser. It is absolutely essential to watch your bull on the first few services to make sure successful breeding is occurring. Any problems or concerns with your purchase(s), please direct back to Lewis Farms and we will check into them for you.
HEALTH CARE All bulls to be sold are vaccinated and boostered against: 1. IBR 2. P13 3. BDV 4. BRSV 5. Hemophilus 6. 7- Way Blackleg Treatment, for both internal and external parasites (lice, worms and warbles). This was done in late November with a pour on endectocide. In order to promote red meat in Alberta, being of superior quality we give all injections subcutaneously. This is in accordance with the beef quality assurance program and is something which we should all practice in our operations. Most vaccines and antibiotics now are approved for subcutaneous usage. All bulls have been Double Fusogard Vaccinated for footrot. The initial and booster shots will have been given prior to the sale. We believe this extra expense will be worth it to our bull customers.
C.E.R. = CALVING EASE RATING We rank the bulls with a calving ease score, taking into consideration shape, bone, pedigree, as well as birth weight and calving ease epd’s. Each bull has been evaluated for assistance in y our selection. *** Bulls recommended for use on virgin heifers. ** Bulls recommended for use on 2nd calvers and all cows. * Bulls recommended for use on mature cows maximizing performance.
EXPORTING
With regards to exporting bulls out of the country or for testing for admission to stud, Lewis Farms will arrange for all the tests but the cost will be borne by the new owner. This may take up to 3 weeks to get all the test results back.

FREE DELIVERY & AFTER SALE OPTIONS
Option A: Free delivery will be provided by Lewis Farms to central points in western Canada at the convenience of Lewis Farms, eastern Canada will be cost shared. Option B: Lewis Farms will keep bulls until May 1, 2012 for no charge. Then by that time the bulls will be picked up unless previous arrangements have been made. Lewis Farms insists all bulls be insured or covered with the Lewis Warranty while at Lewis Farms. Option C: Purchasers wishing to pick up their bull/bulls on sale day will receive a $100.00 discount per bull purchased. Lewis Farms reserves the right to draw semen on any bull sold, for in herd use, at the buyers convenience and our cost.

EPD’S & SALE TERMS EPD’S - EXPLANATION
TERMS & CONDITIONS
EPD’s are “Expected Progeny Differences”. They are a useful tool in selection for traits when the accuracies are there. The EPD’s at the time of publication will be different at sale date due to association program updates. EPD’s incorporate the individual animal with its averaged ancestry performance. EPD’s do not compare across different breeds, they are individually based per breed. EPD’s indicate a probable variance above or below breed average for that trait for a given bull’s progeny. Use them for guidance in the direction you want your herd to go.
Terms - The terms of the sale are cash or cheque at the sale location unless satisfactory credit arrangements have been made previous to the sale. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement is made. Should any purchaser fail to settle for their purchase, Lewis Farms reserves full power to resell the animal to the best advantage, either publicly or privately, without further notice. All settlements must be made with the clerks of the sale before any cattle will be released.

A first calf heifer is defined as a female calving for the first time at 33 months of age or less. Birth Weight: A positive value indicates heavier than average birth weights while a negative value indicates lighter than average birth weights. Weaning Weight: The EPD value predicts the difference in average 205 day weight of a bull’s calves compared to calves of all other bulls evaluated. A positive value indicates heavier than average weaning weights while a negative value indicates lighter than average. Yearling Weight: The EPD value predicts the difference in average 365 day weight of a bull’s progeny compared to progeny of all other bulls evaluated. A positive value indicates heavier than average yearling weights while a negative number indicates lighter than average. Maternal Calving Ease: Heifers (H) - The ease with which a sire’s daughter will calve as a first calf heifer. When comparing maternal calving ease EPD’s of two sires, the larger EPD indicates a higher % of unassisted births for calves born out of this sire’s daughters. Maternal Weaning Weights: The weaning weight of a bull’s daughters. Expected progeny performance reported in pounds. A positive value indicated heavier than average weaning weights while a negative value indicates lighter than average weaning weights. Maternal Milk: The milking ability of a bull’s daughters. Expected progeny performance is expressed in pounds of calf weaning weight. The EPD value predicts the difference (due to milking ability) in average 200 day weight of a bull’s daughter’s calves of all other bulls evaluated. Positive values indicate above average milking ability of daughters while negative values indicate below average milking ability. PUREBRED ANGUS EPD'S: The red and black Angus bull EPD's are based on pedigree estimates therefore no accuracies. The red and black Angus cannot be compared against each other because of different EPD bases. (American Angus Assoc. & Red Angus of America compare as if red and black angus are two different breeds.)
Disputes - In case of disputes, bidding will be re-opened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. Bring Down The House is owned by Tracy Pizzey of Foxwarren, Manitoba. We kept a half interest in House when he sold him in our 19th Annual Bull Sale in 2004. We have used House directly over a longer period of time than any other bull in LFE history. After a successful show career, House has proven his worth in siring low birth, black cattle that grow well and develop into the right kind. His daughters have evolved into forefront females that have become productive building blocks in moving our homozygous black program forward. Dark Knight is the “go to” homozygous black bull in our program. Knight carries the Rocking Hart brand and we consider ourselves fortunate to have access to Knight at spring breeding time. This spring will be Knight’s third calf crop to sell. The power and consistency among these sons is impressive. Hot Topic was our lead off Superior son of 2010. He’s extremely complete with a big hip and loads of muscle expression. He’s big ribbed and massive when you stand behind him. Added to his list of qualities is his wicked brockle face which is transmitted to offspring quite regularly. Hot Topic is backed by our oldest homo black cow family, the Dakota Coal family. 616L has been a significant model cow producing beautiful uddered daughters, two of which sold in our previous Leading Ladies sale. Unfortunately we lost his 12 year old dam this previous summer. However her legacy will live on through her daughters and female offspring generated by Hot Topic. Hot Topic has nine sons in the sale.

Bundi is the new kid of the pack that has lots to prove. He was purchased in the spring of 2011 by McMillan Ranching and Ashworth Farm and Ranch. His breeding potential is unique, being the only red carrying Superior son to impact this breed. We set out to create a hetero black son, to involve the red component our program. Even though Bundi’s descends from our most achieved homo black cow family, he is an outcross for the breed and for us in the hetero black and even red sector. This fall we sold a red Bundi heifer calf to Kotowich Evergreen Farms and had a Bundi calf on choice with her sister selling to Frehlick farms for $25 000. There are only 5 Bundi lots on offer this spring, but look for Bundi’s impact in years to come.
