tect Kenneth David Lee, who

renovated and lives in our cover home. Architects are some of my favorite peo-

ple—they’re smart, forward thinking and innovative. Like many great architects, Lee has the environment in mind and always reuses and recycles whenever possible. In our cover house, he recycled most of the old construction material and purchased new recycled aluminum products, such as tiles and doors, for many of the rooms. The solar panels off the back roof were among the most expensive aspects of the project—about $30,000—but Lee says with manufacturer and government rebates, he’ll recoup the cost in energy savings within 10 years.

Speaking of “before” and “after,” I’ll take this time

to say a fond farewell to our readers. I’m taking a long awaited sabbatical to finish my novel, Guapo James, about an ill-fated cross-cultural teen romance.

or this issue, Zagat Survey editor Merrill Shindler looks into the phenomenon of Brandywine, a diminutive continental restaurant on the western edge of the San Fernando Valley. It’s a culinary gem in the midst of a fast food universe, where a barebones staff manages to turn out food of exceptional quality, in a style that faded away eons ago. Says Shindler, “It’s a reminder that all you have to do to be current is stay in the same place long enough.”

trade secrets they cook, who cooks, how the room is really used. They should work with someone who knows the latest products as well as the tried and true, and who also understands good kitchen layout and spacing.

Is there a particular style or material people really want now? Having complementary two-toned colors is popular, as well as having an island in a design and painted finish that makes it look like furniture. The other big trend is to use natural quartz instead of granite. At around the same price, quartz is just as durable but easier to maintain; it also offers some great new colors that mimic granite.

Is there such a thing as a “Southern California” look for kitchens? Since people entertain a lot here, our kitchens tend to be one big space now, with 90 percent connected to a living area or outdoor living area. Everyone here wants to have that great-room feel—to have their kids at an island, more than one cook be able to use the space, and to have it be very comfortable and not too showplace-y.

Is it a safe bet to remodel a kitchen during an economic downturn? Yes, as long as you know you’ll be in the house at least five years (to recoup much of the expense). Also important is remodeling with an eye for the entire home’s design— for example, if you have a home with older architecture and features, having an ultracontemporary style kitchen can be jolting and turn off future buyers. You want continuity of flow.

What do you see kitchens being like 20 years from now? The biggest thing is that they’ll be more environmentally friendly, and by then green products will be more affordable. Kitchens will also be more friendly to aging adults, who by then will want softer flooring like linoleum, easy to open cabinetry and the like. Everyone will want ease and comfort.

moved from a dingy Hollywood

rental into a model home in Encino in 1966. It was small, about 2,700 square feet, but it had a pool and space for their family and careers— both of which were growing. It was in this home that the couple filmed their movie, “Good Times,” which shows Cher frolicking in the backyard pool encircled by a metal fence with their initials, “S” and “C.” Within four years, they were at the top of the charts and had a hit television series, so a

“The architect is a champ for redoing it with us in mind,” says Cher, who now lives in Malibu. “We had a lot of terrific times in that house.” A woman purchased the home from the rising stars, but found as the years went by that she couldn’t afford to keep it up. Then in 2004, a fire started in the kitchen and spread throughout much of the house. Enter architect Kenneth David Lee. “I heard it was up for sale and I went to see it,” he recalls during a tour of the finished home. “It was a wreck. What wasn’t burned had bad smoke damage, the back yard was a mess, the fence was falling down. “A decision had to be made—tear it down or fix it. It would have been a lot less expensive to tear it down, but I knew who had lived there and I thought it would be a challenge to restore it to its previous condition.” Lee actually purchased it as a home that he and his wife would eventually move into, and renovations began. It took him two years to redo it all. Here’s how he performed an architectural miracle: “I tried to salvage as much of the remaining structure as possible,

and I think I did.” But he had to rip out all the old electric wiring—which may have caused the fire— and the plumbing. He shored up the roof and walls. He also banged out some of the walls in the kitchen and master bedroom to add about 500 square feet, and notes that “the addition of studio space, expansion of existing closet space and creation of a truly gourmet kitchen flow effortlessly into the original footprint of the home.” The size of the kitchen was increased by about 200 square feet. Custom cabinetry was added and Ann Sacks tiles grace the walls. Appliances are by Wolf. The retro decor is fitting.

Where others may have added a second story to the home, Lee decided against it. “I knew anyone else would have added. It isn’t against any city ordinance and it would have been easy to do,” he says. “But I wanted to maintain the integrity and history of the house. The open floor plan takes full advantage of the morning sun and stunning views. I’m happy I kept it a one-story.” This wasn’t the first celebrity home for Lee, who opened his own firm in 1978 after getting an architectural degree from USC and working with noted So Cal architects Edward Niles and Philip Jon Brown. But she concedes she’s learning on the job, as her initial instinct was to get rid of the pool. “The place was desolate and sad, so my first thought was to tear down the back yard and start from scratch,” she says. “But my dad was dead set against tearing this pool out.” Casazza worked around the small pool in

the 1,000-foot long yard, re-tiling it instead and putting in an elevated spa/fountain in order to transform the desolate feeling into a peaceful one. Cracked hardscaping surrounded the pool, and there was the matter of the “S” and “C” fence, rusting and falling down. Casazza replaced the hardscape with native plants, installed a built-in barbecue and created a koi pond. As for the fence, she had it sanded, reposted into the ground, and painted blue. The letters are still in place. “The good news about this place,” Casazza says, “was that it was bought by my father, someone who loves it and will always take care of it.” The master bath off the bedroom was expanded and updated.

At the Water’s Edge

Marjory Kron We’ve all stood at the water’s edge and marveled at that fascinating spot where our world meets the unknown. For Malibu artist and lifelong rock enthusiast Marjory Kron, this is a place of pure inspiration. The waterline along the Channel Island Harbor jetty sparked a collection of soothing and soulmoving sketches. At the Water’s Edge expresses the mystery of the great expanse just beyond dry land. A Closer Look examines her enjoyment of rocks as objects. “Rocks express something so basic. Everything else in the world is built on them or of them,” she explains. “They’re the star stuff, and they remind us of our origins in the universe.” With a master’s degree in art therapy, Kron finds not only beauty in art, but also a powerful tool for healing.
