Teamwork… Partnership… Group Effort… Alliance… Relationship… Cooperation For decades, thousands of Santa Monicans have worked together to shape our City’s future. Be it improving education, saving parks, saving the beach, preserving neighborhoods …and just where and when we build new housing for the next generation.

Measure LV would end that collaboration. It would trash the process that neighbors, businesses, planners and our elected officials have engaged in. While that process has not always been an easy road, replacing it with what would amount to who has the most money to spend on a political campaign is reckless and, frankly, just gambling with the our treasured quality of life — to the detriment of our children and future residents of Santa Monica.

Let’s avoid this unintended consequence of Measure LV.

Public Safety in Jeopardy Proposed new SM Fire Station #1

“ Measure LV would at best delay construction after a public campaign to educate voters on the needs of the Fire Department, and at worst result in the station being voted down and the lengthy design and building process to restart.” —Santa Monica Firefighters, Local 1109 September 14, 2016

Our Firefighters & Police Agree: “ After a natural or man-made disaster, Measure LV would complicate the rebuilding of damaged properties which currently exceed Tier 1 limits…approximately 1300 of the 1700 have residential uses which Measure LV does not exempt from voter approval. Delaying reconstruction of buildings after any large scale disaster not only negatively affects the residents who live in the buildings, but hinders public safety for all of Santa Monica, as uninhabited structures are magnets for squatters and other criminal behavior.”

No On LV! Should taxpayers be required to finance a political campaign, then pay for an election and only then (MAYBE) feel lucky we dodged a ‘public safety bullet’ to replace our 60 year-old, seismically faulty downtown fire station?

That is simply too risky …and really stupid.

Measure LV Fails Santa Monica’s ‘Housing Reality Test’… We’re all concerned about the affordability of living in Santa Monica. Especially the cost of housing for folks with lower or fixed incomes…like senior citizens. Measure LV would actually sabotage that affordability by requiring construction over 2 stories get ‘ballot approval.’ While it claims to ‘protect’ 100% senior housing, in fact it will make it nearly impossible to build such housing in the future.

Why?

Measure LV neglected to account for land availability and price in Santa Monica. Combined with the escalating, real world cost of construction, LV would result in home building costs that are too ‘rich’ to attract affordable housing funds (mostly non-profit) that have all but dried up in our State.

The City continues to work with housing providers to ensure they include affordable units as market rate housing is developed. Let’s not interrupt years of planning that preserves the affordability and economic diversity we so treasure here in Santa Monica.

Even MORE traffic? It would be GREAT to ‘vote away’ our traffic issues this November. But that is not going to happen: Measure LV would not remove one car from our streets. In fact, the most ironic unintended consequence of Measure LV may be that it would actually make traffic worse in Santa Monica, a.k.a. Silicon Beach.

REALLY?

EVERYBODY LOVES IT HERE! Santa Monica! For 90 years, the romantic beach town at the end of America’s Highway. Today, as the home to more and more start-ups, our ‘Silicon Beach’ hosts thousands of daily workers who drive our flourishing, world class economy.

That’s a lot of damn cars! While the new Expo line, bicycle programs and the Big Blue Bus do offer some commuting alternatives, the continued supply of new local housing opportunities plays a significant part in keeping people close to their jobs and their cars off our streets.

Measure LV would severely limit that supply of new housing in Santa Monica – both moderate and affordable. We are not the last generation who will cherish Santa Monica as a place to live and work. Years of community collaboration between residents, home builders, city planners and businesses will provide that needed housing while preserving our established residential areas. Measure LV would sabotage that common sense, smart growth plan …and still not take one car off our streets!

Meet the McMansions!

Santa Monicans have worked for years to agree housing should be built downtown, next to transit and in industrial areas. Measure LV would sabotage our collaborative planning process and exempt single family home development.

The Result? Inevitably older apartments and smaller homes will become tear-down targets for oversized, “luxury” home developers…further eroding the neighborhoods we have fought for years to protect from gross gentrification.

Seriously, more McMansions?! We are fortunate to be part of an economically diverse, vibrant beach community with fresh air, beautiful parks and livable, to-scale neighborhoods. Cast your ballot to keep it that way.
