Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends, On any given day at Lebanon Valley College, you will find students working side-by-side with faculty to develop puncture-resistant surgical gloves and analyze nail polish samples to aid crime scene investigations. You will see students and faculty collaborating with members of the local community to educate the public on the opioid epidemic. And you will meet students who have audited the financial statements of multimillion-dollar organizations, helped athletes recover from injury, and secured internships in technology—all while maintaining a rigorous academic schedule and participating in athletics, the arts and music, and campus life and leadership. We are a community of purpose. Our students aspire in what they do on campus and what they hope to accomplish in their lives. We in turn prepare students for success as they move from one opportunity to the next. Soon, several exciting new initiatives will become part of the significant value LVC offers to its students, their families, and the region we serve. In the months ahead, the College will introduce new resources to help every student make thoughtful and effective choices along the path to the future. Career services will align its work with our developmental educational model, the Constellation LVC curriculum, and academic advising to assist students in acquiring the hard and soft skills employers and graduate and professional schools seek. Students will build compelling résumés, secure internships, and choose the academic pathways that fit their needs, interests, and professional goals. A strategic approach to partnerships will enhance and expand the College’s educational impact. The region is rich with businesses and organizations in fields and industries that are appealing to graduates and vital to the economy and wellbeing of the community. These organizations seek the world-ready employees LVC produces. We are increasing our efforts to build mutually beneficial and multifaceted partnerships that will give students professional experiences and built-in networks. Through shared efforts that include research, educating across age groups, volunteering, and cultural activities, LVC will do even more to improve the quality of life and outcomes of those living in the region. This includes expanding our service to adult students and online learners. LVC has provided educational programs for adult learners since its early days, with master of arts, master of science, and certificate programs offered as early as 1869. Such programs were particularly strong in the 1950s and continued in additional off-site locations into the late 1990s. Today, a growing number of adult learners seek to advance in or change careers, better provide for their families, and broaden their impact on the world. We will soon offer additional high-quality master’s degrees, undergraduate degree completion programs, and certificate programs delivered fully or partially online to serve this population, in keeping with our commitment to student and graduate success. LVC has been one of the first and finest to offer a thorough, broad, and rigorous curriculum combined with experiential learning opportunities and enhanced by a mentoring mindset. The world needs us, our region needs us, and our students need us. Thank you to all those who have given their time, talent, and resources in support of Lebanon Valley College. Your contributions help transform students’ aspirations into reality. Warmly,

Lewis E. Thayne, Ph.D. President

Who are the people outside your family who have had the most positive impact on your life? For Lebanon Valley College students, it’s the high school teachers who helped steer them to The Valley. It’s the favorite professors, coaches, and staff members who mentor them and encourage them to be their best. In addition, it’s the alumni and friends of the College who make an LVC education valuable in so many ways, from supporting student-faculty research to providing internship and job-shadowing experiences that lead to professional success, scholarships that create access, and gifts for beautiful and technologically advanced facilities that create collaborative and rigorous learning opportunities, along with career preparation. Here are four stories of alumni who—through their generosity—are now helping the next generation of Dutchmen achieve their aspirations by forging opportunities that cross generations and continents.

CROSSCONTINENTAL ASPIRATIONS When Richard D. Wong ’77 left his parents behind in Hong Kong to study business administration and economics at Lebanon Valley College, his parents wanted a little insurance—a nearby watchful eye. They called on LVC’s campus chaplain, the late Rev. Dr. James O. Bemesderfer ’36, who had been a seminary classmate of Wong’s father and was still a trusted friend despite the distance between them. “Dr. B. took his responsibility very diligently and treated me like his son,” Wong says. “He treated me with kindness and loving care. He kept me straight, and I truly appreciated it.” Today Wong is vice president for advancement at the Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, Va., and has dedicated his career to raising funds to help others succeed. He sees daily how scholarships make transformative opportunities possible. “I know exactly how much it costs to operate an institution and how much students benefit from scholarships,” Wong says. “I received financial aid at Lebanon Valley, and I realize how important it is.” In June 2017, Wong made a commitment to establish The Rev. Dr. James O. Bemesderfer Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund to support a student of good character and academic standing who has demonstrated financial need. “What better way to remember Dr. B. and perpetuate his dedication to Lebanon Valley?” Wong asks. “My hope is that other alumni from the ’70s era who appreciated Dr. B. may stand up and contribute to the scholarship fund too. It’s not about me—it’s about honoring a man who helped me and so many other students succeed.”

CROSS-GENERATIONAL ASPIRATIONS Even before her days as a student at LVC, Linda J. Evans ’83 had an adventurous spirit and curious mindset. Therefore, it wasn’t surprising that soon after earning her private pilot’s license, she decided to enter cross-country airplane races [including a top 10 finish one year]—and head back to school a fourth time to learn airplane mechanics. Evans’ sense of adventure is all her own, but she credits her parents and Frank Stachow, late LVC professor of music, for helping her succeed in a career that enabled her to pursue the open skies in her free time. Evans originally intended to major in music at LVC. However, Stachow convinced her to add a math major as well. That major became the foundation for later degrees from Temple and Villanova, and a fulfilling career in pharmaceuticals. “The idea of studying math had never crossed my mind, so Frank changed the whole course of my life,” she says. Evans was a senior director at Pfizer in 2015 when she established the Bob and June Evans Scholarship to honor her parents. Her $65,000 endowment was boosted by a

$35,000 Pfizer contribution to the scholarship awarded to students who participate in at least two student activities and who have financial need and good academic standing. In 2017, Brittany Fleisher ’17 became the scholarship’s first recipient. “Brittany’s involved, she’s dedicated,” Evans says. “Hopefully, the scholarship will help her achieve a dream and give her a better chance at success. I want students to see they really can do anything, and they shouldn’t be afraid to try anything. That’s why the scholarship is geared toward students who are actively involved—I want them to live their lives and get involved in the College and the broader community.” Evans also hopes her contributions—including a $75,000 pledge toward the Jeanne and Edward H. Arnold Health Professions Pavilion—inspire other LVC alumni to become involved. “Lebanon Valley doesn’t have a huge alumni base, so what I do has a much greater impact than it would at a large school with numerous alumni,” Evans says. “At Lebanon Valley, every alumnus can make a difference.”

RESEARCH ASPIRATIONS When Dr. Roberta Reed ’67 was thinking about going to college, she happened to flip through a magazine at a neighbor’s house listing the nation’s top 50 college science programs. In it: Lebanon Valley College. “I thought Lebanon Valley’s chemistry program was the strongest,” she says. “I received a competitive scholarship—a full-tuition scholarship—and it helped.” Dr. Reed parlayed her LVC chemistry degree into a 30-year career at Bassett Healthcare, where she retired as a research biochemist and laboratory director. Although she went on to earn postgraduate degrees at Wesleyan University and completed a fellowship at the University of North Carolina, Dr. Reed chose her first alma mater when she decided to fund student research. “Lebanon Valley is an institution where people care about each other, where undergraduate students are the primary focus,” she says. “The College is anchored by its values and commitment to developing programs oriented to helping students grow and become successful.”

In March 2017, Dr. Reed established The Roberta Gable Reed Student Research Fund in honor of her 50th Reunion. The fund offers a stipend for faculty-guided student research in the physical or biological sciences—an opportunity she valued while an undergraduate at LVC and later passed on to student-interns at Bassett. When she retired, she wanted to continue giving students real-world research opportunities. “Classroom learning is different from what you do out in the world as a scientist. You can learn from a book, but that doesn’t give you the same sense of what a career in science is like,” Dr. Reed says. “My experience as a student anchored me to lab work and made me feel at home interacting with other professionals.” She hopes her gift will spur others looking for ways to transform education. “I did this to help one person at a time,” Dr. Reed says. “You can’t minimize the impact of a scholarship. If many people are helped because someone gave them an opportunity, maybe they will do that for someone else too.”

NRG Controls signed on as presenting sponsor of LVC Homecoming from 2017 through 2019, joining other business and community leaders choosing LVC event sponsorship [see sidebar]. Franklin likes the idea of promoting a memorable experience that puts NRG’s name front and center to alumni who are now in or climbing toward leadership roles across many industries. “LVC has a successful group of graduates who move into high levels in their fields,” Franklin says. “So any advertising we do to that group at an event is positive. That kind of advertising to a broad clientele is something we’ve found to be very productive.” Franklin, who studied biology at LVC, was attracted to its highly regarded science programs. Today, he appreciates the clear advantages of the problem-solving and critical-thinking skills he learned at LVC— skills, he says, that transverse all disciplines. By sponsoring Homecoming events, Franklin says, NRG Controls makes a statement about its partners’ commitment to local communities. Personally, the sponsorship made returning to LVC for Homecoming 2017 even more meaningful.

(l. to r.): Gabriel, Jay ’97, and India Franklin

BUSINESS ASPIRATIONS Jayanth “Jay” Franklin ’97 wasn’t aware that his alma mater had recently begun offering opportunities for businesses to sponsor Lebanon Valley College events. That is, until he ran into his neighbor, Doug Yingst P’01, who also happens to be LVC’s director of corporate relations and athletic giving and men’s assistant ice hockey coach. Franklin was immediately intrigued about the thought of his company, NRG Controls Inc., collaborating with The Valley. Franklin, vice president of NRG Controls, has many responsibilities, including developing strategies that harness emerging and existing technologies to increase his clients’ operational and energy efficiency. He saw the strategic benefits of sponsoring LVC events while also supporting his alma mater.

10

LEBANON VALLE Y COLLEG E

“The sponsorship brought my whole LVC experience and life experience full circle,” he says. “There was a real sense of pride coming back and seeing our name at the College. It gave me a ‘job well done’ kind of feeling.”

Please contact Matthew Weaver, director of development, at 717-867-6440 or mweaver@lvc.edu to learn more about the variety of ways your generosity can help the next generation of Valley graduates achieve their dreams.

Jay Franklin ’97 was the first LVC alumnus to sponsor a College event or activity, but several others quickly followed, including: Natalie Taylor Kratzer ’02, Financial Advisor, Thrivent Financial Doug MacCormack ’04, Vice President, Financial Advisor, Fulton Financial Advisors Ryan S. Redner ’99, President and Chief Executive Officer, Redner’s Markets Inc.
