Spring 2020 Academic Policies

As a result of the unusual circumstances surrounding the coronavirus, COVID-19, and the sudden transition of face-to-face courses to the online environment beginning March 18, new grading options and academic policies are in place for the Spring Semester 2020. Future semesters will resume standard policies and deadlines, as stated in the academic calendar and College Catalog. To ensure students avoid any unintended consequences, it is critical that students carefully consult with their advisors before making decisions to withdrawal from courses or change to a pass/fail option. Advisor approval is required in order to make these changes. COURSE WITHDRAWAL DEADLINES

• All undergraduate students and graduate students in semester-long courses may withdraw from a course through April 29, 2020. • Graduate students in spring session II courses may withdraw through the last day of the course. • Withdrawing from a course results in a grade of W, which is not calculated in the GPA.

UNDERGRADUATE PASS/FAIL OPTION

• Undergraduate students may opt to switch to a pass/fail option through May 22, 2020. This deadline also applies to students taking an incomplete grade for a spring 2020 course. • A grade of P (Pass) will be assigned if a student earns a D- or higher. A grade of PH (Pass with Honors) will be assigned if a student earns a B+ or higher.

Grades of P and PH are not calculated in the GPA.

• Courses graded P and PH will satisfy Constellation, major, and minor requirements for the spring 2020 semester only. • Grades of P will satisfy prerequisite requirements for courses taken in future semesters.

• Students who do not earn at least a D- will receive a grade of F. Grades of F will continue to be calculated in the GPA. Students in danger of earning an

F are advised to withdraw from a course by the extended course withdrawal deadline (see above).

• There is no limit to the number of courses a student may elect to take Pass/

Fail for the spring 2020 semester only. In addition, the number of pass/fail courses taken in the spring 2020 semester will not count toward the maximum of six courses elected pass/fail that would normally be counted toward graduation requirements. • Graduate courses (numbered 600 or higher) taken by undergraduate students may not be taken pass/fail. This includes 4th year athletic training and physical therapy courses.

• A transcript notation will be added to all academic transcripts, regardless of grading basis, notating the global public health emergency during the Spring 2020 semester.

UNDERGRADUATE ACADEMIC STANDING

• In most cases students will not receive any new academic standing action following the spring 2020 semester only and will continue their current academic standing in the fall of 2020. Exceptions to this will occur if: • A student earns below a 1.000 semester GPA. • A student earns a failing grade in courses representing at least 6 credits. In this case a student will be considered for academic action. • A student earns a GPA that warrant removal from academic action.

DEAN’S LIST

• Students achieving a 3.400 or higher grade point average while carrying at least 9 credit hours for a grade (excluding courses taken pass/fail) shall be named to the Dean’s List at the end of each semester. Students with an incomplete grade will not be awarded Dean’s List. If, when all incompletes are resolved, the student meets the Dean’s List criteria, they may submit a request to be added to the Dean’s List through the Registrar’s Office. GRADUATION HONORS

• Upon completion of bachelor’s degree requirements, most students will receive graduation honors according to the existing policy, which will not be affected by opting to use the pass/fail option: • Summa cum laude honors will be awarded for grade point averages of 3.750–4.000. • Magna cum laude honors will be awarded for grade point averages of 3.600–3.749.

• Cum laude honors will be awarded for grade point averages of 3.400–3.599.

• For spring 2020 only, a separate policy has been developed for 4th-year Athletic Training and Physical Therapy students (those taking 600-level graduate courses, and therefore not eligible to take courses pass/fail) who graduate with a bachelor’s degree in May 2020. These students will be awarded graduation honors based on their cumulative GPA at the end of either the fall 2019 or spring 2020 semester, whichever is higher. Students will otherwise follow the honors GPA criteria under the existing policy.
