Editor’s Note

March/April 2016  The Edenbridge Directory

Dear Neighbours, I hope you are well and enjoying 2016. My work has taken me on many adventures as usual and I can't believe how time is flying this year already. The beginning of the year is often slow as everyone gets back into the swing of things after a busy Christmas period, although things never slow down that much in our lovely area. The Edenbridge & District Astronomers held their annual Stargazing Live event in January. There were plenty of telescopes set up on the patio at the local golf club and the telescope owners were more than happy to answer questions. It was a thoroughly fascinating event and we had a fantastic view of the moon to enjoy. Of course there was the annual Panto performed by the Forge Singers and this year saw a fabulous adaptation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Edenbridge was once more entertained by tremendous local talent and my husband Russell and I left the hall with aching faces from all the laughter. Well done to all the cast and crew!

Fairy Goodheat and the Wicked Queen battle it out at the WI Hall

Two events to watch out for at the WI Hall over the coming months are the Scout Quiz on 11th March (I've got my team booked already) and the Edenbridge Players performing Alan Ayckbourn's "Neighbourhood Watch" on 22-23 April. Check out the What's On guide on page 26 for all the latest events.

I was delighted to welcome Edenbridge based Mark Lukas onto The Community Show on Channel Radio recently, speaking about his volunteering adventures with RefugEASE charity, as well as the Edenbridge Players who he has performed with many times over the years. You can listen to all the shows via the website www.thecommunityshow.net. The show is broadcast live each Thursday from 10-11am at www.channelradio.co.uk - for all things community, charity and fundraising. A big thank you to this issue's crossword sponsor, the Cowpie Country Show, who are giving the lucky winner a family ticket (2 adults/2 children and worth £34) to their annual show which takes place this year on Sunday 8th May. I apologise that the crossword was extremely difficult in the last issue so I'm hoping this one will be a little easier to complete! I hope you enjoy this issue and please don’t forget to mention The Edenbridge Directory if you are responding to anything you’ve seen featured in this magazine as it helps secure it’s future. Until next time...

Flexible Health Insurance Brokers Ltd: Private Medical Insurance explained

Julie Defago, adviser at Flexible Health Insurance, explains the benefits of Private Medical Insurance - “PMI”

"In the last edition we considered the benefits that PMI can offer individuals and how using an Independent Broker can ensure that you get the best policy for your requirements. We find that many of our clients first enjoy the benefits of PMI via a company scheme run by their employers. Many large companies offer private healthcare for their employees and this can be included as a benefit of their employment or perhaps on a self-funded basis whereby the company runs the scheme and claims the premiums back via payroll. Company health schemes are common and often expected as part of a package for employees with larger

corporate organisations. However, it shouldn’t be forgotten that there are a great many benefits of Private Health Insurance for small to medium sized companies (SME's) too. The obvious benefits are that both employer and employee know that if someone becomes ill they can be treated quickly and at a hospital of their choice and so be back to work quickly. Employers may be able to attract better staff if there is the attraction of PMI. For companies with 20+ employees there is also the benefit of being able to access cover where previous medical problems are disregarded which isn’t generally available to individual clients. Most company schemes include cover for Employee Assistance which covers benefits such as counselling, GP helplines and even gym membership which help the employer satisfy their duty of care under Human Resources legislation. Some insurers offer different levels of cover for staff of different ranks and an employee's family can usually be added to the

scheme enabling them to take advantage of company scheme prices. Anyone who has an individual PMI policy and runs their own company should always ask us if it may be cheaper and more beneficial to change it to a company scheme. Another important point to remember is if you are coming off a company scheme (perhaps due to retirement) it is a good idea to call us a month before so we can arrange continued cover from the company scheme at an affordable price. Arranging this “Group Leaver” cover directly with the insurer is extremely expensive. For advice on any aspect of PMI for companies, call me on freephone 0800 849 7744." In the next issue Julie will move on from Private Health Insurance and consider why families and businesses need financial protection. Flexible Health are based in Edenbridge and we offer advice over the phone or in person. If you would like advice please call Julie Defago on Freephone 0800 849 7744.

appearances aesthetics - Transforming the way we look (Pt 10)

Gillian Huntley, 2015 Kent Aesthetic Practitioner of the Year, of award winning appearances aesthetics is celebrating 30 years in the industry this year. Her treatments have really helped transform the lives of her clients by boosting their confidence through the non-surgical procedures she delivers. As well as specialist treatments such as mole removal, mesotherapy, thread vein/pigmentation removal, skin peels using the Image Skincare range, skin tag removal, Gillian also

provides semi-permanent cosmetic treatments such as eyebrow (WoW Brows) and eyeliner tattooing, areola reconstruction, receding hairlines and medical tattooing. Gillian is fully certified so you can be assured you're in safe hands. So far, all the treatments I have received have been at Gillian's studio in Chiselhurst so I thought it was about time I had a treatment in her local Edenbridge venue, Options Beauty Salon in Edenbridge High Street. This is in fact where she sees many of her local clients. She conducts initial consultations as well as patch testing on new clients from here and her specialist equipment is fully portable. In the last issue you may recall Gillian tattooed a 'beauty spot' just below my eye. She was very conservative with the size initially as she would

Sunnyfields Day Nursery - open for business

Many of us remember it as the old Library building but now the premises in Chruch Street has been transformed into a two storey facility that is now home to Sunnyfields Day Nursery. Renovations started in February 2015 and were completed in September 2015. An extra floor was built in the roof space with the rooms enjoying natural light from the large windows at either end of the building. Owner Anna Bailey set up her first day nursery in Bromley 17 years ago, followed by Orpington in 2005 and now Edenbridge in 2015. Anna has a Business Degree, gained Early Years Professional Status and has many years experience working with nursery age children. Since then Anna's husband Stuart has joined the family business to bring on board his property and maintenance skills full time. Stuart is also NVQ3 qualified in childcare. Since the beginning of the year Sunnyfields has been open on a full-time basis and offers monthly Saturday open days to

"Children love routine" explains Anna "so a strong daily routine is how a good day nursery performs well".

The pre-school unit is the largest indoor area offering writing, maths, role play and more to the children. To keep the space interesting for youngsters, the areas are changed around on a regular basis which is good for their stimulation.

Everything which has been installed in the nursery has been done with a great deal of thought. Even the door handles are positioned out of the reach of little arms to ensure the safety and security of the children. Sunnyfields Nursery may be new to Edenbridge, but Anna has a long history with the town after working here many years ago years ago in the old Aegon building. Her philosophy is to create a place where children are happy and parents feel confident in leaving their children under the expert supervision and guidance of her strong team of staff.

Breakfast is served at 9am each morning, lunch at midday and a light snack at 4pm. The children are given a hot lunch and pudding that have been specially prepared by a caterer who provides meals for all three of the Sunnyfields Nurseries.

Sunnyfields certainly has a lot to offer and Anna and the team are looking forward to welcoming you and showing you around the facilities.

There is plenty of outdoor space for the children to let off steam, encourage their sense of adventure and develop new skills such as building, performing (they have their

Valence School, Westerham enabling independence for 4 -19 year olds

Tucked away in woodlands just off the A25, Valence School provides schooling for 4 to 19 year olds with physical disabilities and complex medical needs. The school is part-residential and offers the National Curriculum to Primary and Secondary students. Valence School is certainly unique within the maintained education sector of the whole of the South of England. Situated on a large site with a staff team of over 200 people providing specialist teaching, social care, therapies and nursing care to an exceptionally high standard. The overall aim of the school is to enable every young person to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding together with the confidence, self-esteem and self-dependence necessary for them to participate in and contribute to society in the way each chooses. The facilities have been adapted and designed to allow students greater freedom of movement. Boarding students live in accommodation with state of the art facilities enabling them to do as much for themselves as possible.

32

In 2008 Valence School became a Specialist Sports College, a status which has played a significant role in raising students' achievement and participation in physical education.

staff and guests in the main dining hall with over 200 people enjoying turkey and Christmas cheer together last year.

The school is supported by The Friends of Valence (registered charity No. 275686) for the purpose of raising funds and promoting the school. While the school continue to receive government funding for the very basic operation, the Friends raise money for extra curricular activities, specialist therapy and sporting equipment. The school receives donations from supporters and well-wishers and applies for grants from Trusts and Charities. The specialist equipment comes with a hefty price tag so the role of the Friends and other supporting charities is vital for the existence of the school.

Throughout the year The Friends of Valence also organise a number of fundraising events, from summer fairs, bonfire displays and more. The events are well supported by the local community and organisations. At last year's Food Festival, visitors were treated to cooking demonstrations by popular Indian Chef, Anjula Devi.

A Busy New Year For Sustainable Edenbridge After establishing Sustainable Edenbridge as a significant addition to the rich community life of Edenbridge, group founder Ben Brownless is stepping down as chairman after 5 years. He is succeeded by Sue Rule. Building on the success of last year’s events, the Sustainable Edenbridge team are planning a series of monthly public events throughout 2016, looking at various aspects of sustainability. Sue says, “The idea of ‘think global, act local’ really underpins our approach to this programme of events – we want to explore what sustainability means, so we all better understand the impact of the choices we make in our everyday lives.” The Sustainability Talks programme kicks off on Thursday 3rd March with a talk on Fairtrade. The event starts at 7.30pm in Rickards Hall. Entrance is free and everyone is welcome. BIZ News... 01732 667 250

info@businessinnovationzone.co.uk

FROM EDENBRIDGE TO SPAIN AND ITALY! The BIZ Centre offers a holistic approach to supporting young people over 18 into employment. Employability and soft skills courses, funded by European Funding, are provided and then work at the BIZ is offered for a continued period of time for the young people to utilise those skills - after which employment will be found. Gillian Humble, the driving force behind the BIZ centre has been asked to showcase the project in both Spain and Italy who are expressing real interest in this project, especially as their youth unemployment is higher than in the UK and they believe the scheme is something that is desperately needed in the void between finishing education and going into work. Our local MP Tom Tugendhat has provided much support to the project over the months and with his input has really helped Gill achieve more than she ever thought possible. We will keep you posted of the BIZ's European Adventures over the coming months.

HORSES FOR COURSES

A new course will be launched at the BIZ this year, kick starting with an event on Sunday 28th February from 10am-4.30pm. The "Horse & Hound Wellbeing Day" organised by Pennie Clayton will see a range of speakers and stands offering information on various complementary as well as alternative equine and pet care therapies and products. This event is free to attend and you can find out more by getting in touch with the BIZ Centre.

EBAY'S THE WAY Putting items up for sale on eBay and other selling sites can be daunting if you've never done it before. So why not let us do it for you? We've had many items donated to the centre so we can keep the full profits but we also sell items on behalf of clients for a small fee. Bevan will take pictures, list the item on selling sites and organise the posting once the item has been sold.

WE'RE LIKE A SMALL FACTORY Part of the BIZ Centre has been turned into an assembly line for one local business. They have given our team work to

businessinnovationzone.co.uk fit together parts of their product which they then finish off. It's been keeping us very busy and what's more, it helps the centre earn it's own money and be even more sustainable.

PROVIDING BUSINESS SUPPORT If you need help with leaflets, posters or postcards for your business or organisation then we can help. We've already completed projects for the Eden Church, Parish Nurse and BRIDGES Centre. Our building is also becoming a popular venue with local businesses and groups to hold workshops and courses. We have WiFi, projector, boardroom and all the standard facilities you'd expect to find at your local Business Innovation Zone. You really should think about organising your next workshop here.

CAN WE HELP YOU? We are very flexible in the help we provide so if you need any assistance then give us a call or pop in to see us and we'll see what we can do for you!

The Edenbridge Directory is a proud sponsor of the Business Innovation Zone - a unique facility supporting young people, businesses and the local community of the Eden Valley area.

The Barrister Broker - reducing your legal costs

We are almost in March, where did January and February go? I wonder how many readers managed to keep to their New Year Resolutions? Mine were to lose ¾ of a stone and complete Dry January (no alcohol). Fortunately I managed both but this meant I couldn’t enjoy a pint of beer at the interval when I went to see The Forge Singers performing their hilarious version of Snow White at the WI Hall. What a fabulous talent they are – I haven’t laughed that much in ages! In a professional capacity, I worked as a Barristers’ Clerk in London for over 20 years which involved managing the casework of Barristers (specialist lawyers). Traditionally the work of Barristers came via solicitors but the rules changed several years ago to allow Barristers to accept work directly from clients, i.e. from members of the public and businesses

42

who need legal advice and/or court representation, instead of having to have a solicitor in the middle. This is the reason I formed my own business, The Barrister Broker, nearly three years ago, to help people deal with their legal issues as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible by facilitating Barristers to help them.

important. People often go to a lawyer with NO prior knowledge of the quality of that person’s work assuming they will be in safe hands simply because that person is a lawyer. I have over 25 years in the legal industry so trust me when I say that that sort of assumption is incredibly risky. Lottery springs to mind!

The Benefits

Part of my value is that I remove the ‘guesswork’ to choosing the right lawyer for your needs. I provide highly experienced Barristers from my panel - people who I regularly work with (sometimes over many years) who have proven track records and the necessary skills and experience to help you.

1. L egal expertise - A Barrister has specialist knowledge in his or her legal field, i.e. divorce law, employment law, road traffic law, etc. Going directly to a ‘specialist’ will save you time, money and hassle in the long term. 2. Cost - A Barrister will cost you less overall than a solicitor - a result of much lower operating costs, the effect of fixed fees and flexible working. 3. F ixed fees - knowing how much the cost will be BEFORE agreeing to have the work done is a really important factor that my clients love because it gives them peace of mind and no nasty surprise bills after the work has been done.

So if you are going through a divorce and fear you may not get your rightful share of the family assets or you’re seeking custody or contact with your children, DON’T ‘guess’ when it comes to using a lawyer do yourself a big favour and speak to me. My number is 01732 866 562. Take a look at my website www.thebarristerbroker.com and feel free to follow me on twitter @BarristerBroker
