Enjoy Christmas at two historic Kentish Inns Escape to beautiful west Kent this festive season for wonderfully warming winter dining in an area steeped in history and legend... Two of Kent’s most historic pub-restaurants are setting the scene for a fabulous festive season: picture roaring log fires, cosy nooks and crannies and a warm welcome at The Wheatsheaf at Bough Beech and The Castle Inn at Chiddingstone. The Wheatsheaf, well-known locally for its exquisitely-prepared menus, will be delighting diners with a unique take on seasonal classics created by Head Chef of both pubs David Fuller. Follow in the footsteps of royalty in the welcoming and impressive surroundings of King Henry VIII’s former hunting lodge near Hever Castle, the perfect backdrop to enjoy the Christmas Fayre menu. Meanwhile, The Castle Inn is preparing for its first Christmas under the present ownership since reopening in April 2017, having been sympathetically restored to its period glory. The much-loved Tudor Inn in the picturesque National Trust-owned village of Chiddingstone is looking forward to welcoming new and familiar faces throughout December with David’s traditional menu of festive favourites. Menus for festive dining are available online, and bookings are being taken now for all dates from 1st to 23rd December (excluding Sundays).

The Edenbridge Magazine • November/December 2017

Note from the Editor... Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the November/December issue of The Edenbridge Magazine. I can’t believe how quickly the year has gone and it’s certainly been action packed as well. As I’m writing this, Bonfire Season is in full swing and I was lucky to enjoy a visit to the Rotherfield & Mark Cross event at the end of September as a visiting Bonfire Society with Edenbridge. I had forgotten quite how long the route was and, despite the rain, it was a super evening. Organising these huge events is no small task and there were 29 entries in the procession this year.

Planning is well underway for our own event here on Saturday 4th November from 6.30pm. Don’t forget, there will be road closures in place on the evening to ensure the safety of all those taking part in the procession. As in previous years, the Edenbridge Bonfire Society will be announcing the identity of this year’s giant effigy on the Wednesday before the event. You’ll be able to see the unveiling take place live from the Bonfire Society’s Facebook page. If you’re unable to attend the event on the 4th November then you’ll be able to watch the action live via the Facebook page as well as, technology permitting, it will be live streamed again. Last year the live streams received around 55k views from across the world. It really is THE event that puts Edenbridge on the map. You can find full details about this year’s event on the website at www. edenbridgebonfire.co.uk. There’s been much discussion recently about consultations on various planning proposals in the area and I’d like to respond to an email I received from one reader who was disappointed that I had not covered anything in my previous issue about it. Due to the publishing frequency of the magazine, it makes it very difficult to cover stories that might be fast moving as information may already be out of date by the time the magazine is distributed. For those of you who follow me on the radio, I had an amazing opportunity to meet with the European CEO for Twitter, Bruce Daisley, who was a guest on ‘The Women in Business Radio Show’ which I co-host every Thursday from 11-12noon on www.channelradio.co.uk. It reminded 12 | www.edenbridge-magazine.co.uk • info@edenbridge-magazine.co.uk • 01732 864 878

The Edenbridge Magazine • November/December 2017 me that it is about time I ran another ‘Introduction to Twitter’ workshop for local businesses as I’m often being asked by advertisers how they can best use Twitter to promote their businesses. I haven’t set a date yet but if this would be of interest to you, please drop me an email to laura@ edenbridge-magazine.co.uk and I’ll let you know as soon as details are released. There’s loads going on over the next couple of months, check out the What’s On guides on pages 20 and 28. Don’t forget, if you’re organising an event in 2018 and are part of a non-profit making group or organisation, it’s free to list your event in here. With 6,300 copies delivered each issue, direct through the doors of residents and businesses, you’ll not get better promotion of your event in the local area. In the run up to Christmas, don’t forget to support your local businesses and shops. You’ll find some great gift ideas without the need to travel further afield. Look out for the Eden Valley Loyalty Card symbol at participating retailers (see page 38 for full list) and you could be a lucky winner of £50.00 in vouchers. To help you celebrate Christmas with a fizz, you could win a bottle of bubbly in this issue’s prize crossword, courtesy of Hever Castle Golf Club. See page 42 to enter. As always, please do mention ‘The Edenbridge Magazine’ if you are responding to anything you’ve seen in this publication as it helps to secure it’s future and I hope you enjoy this issue as much as I have putting it together. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Until next time... Bonfire Season is back! If you’re new to Edenbridge, you might not have experienced your first Bonfire Night here. I know when I watched the parade for the first time I was just amazed at how big it was and how many people would flock to our High Street to watch the floats and walking parties march through the town with their flaming torches. Since watching my first parade in 2003 I haven’t missed one yet!

villages in the area. The Bonfire Societies use the events to collect money for local charities.

For the Bonfire Society, it’s not all about the preparations for our own event, this year on Saturday 4th November, it’s also about supporting the other Bonfire Societies across the South East at their own individual events so there is a social arm to our Bonfire Society.

Our own Bonfire Society in Edenbridge was founded in 1928 and there were 700 people at the first event and 25 shillings was raised for local charities. We now see thousands of people attending our events, with hundreds of pounds being raised for local charities. The Society are always grateful for the sponsorship they receive from local businesses, without their support it would be difficult to fund such an event.

150 years of Bonfire Societies Nineteenth century antiquary Mark Antony Lower is credited with starting the “cult of the Sussex Martyrs” and this led to the creation of local Bonfire Societies who commemorated these events. Whereas Guy Fawkes’ night in most parts of Great Britain is traditionally commemorated at large public fireworks displays or small family bonfires, towns in Sussex and Kent hold huge gala events with fires, parades and festivals. The tradition has remained strong for 150 years becoming the highlight of the year for many towns and

Due to the size and number of events it became impractical to hold all the bonfires on the traditional fifth of November and this resulted in a ten week “bonfire season” starting with the Uckfield Carnival on the first Saturday of September and concluding with Hawkhurst on the fourth Saturday in November.

Look out for road closures on the night, in place from 6pm. The procession is due to begin at 6.30pm, starting from Fircroft Way and ending up in the High Street. The firework display will take place on the Recreation Ground afterwards. To find out more visit the website, www.edenbridgebonfire.co.uk, or follow the society on Facebook @EdenbridgeBonfire or Twitter @EdenBonfire.

News from the Community Community grants up to £5k now available

The Popular French Market is coming back to Edenbridge

Community grants worth up to £5,000 are now available for voluntary and charitable organisations across the Sevenoaks District.

In the High Street on Sunday 26th November, from 10am to 4pm. Make a day of it and enjoy a French breakfast, lunch and dinner!

The grants from Sevenoaks District Council’s Community Grant Scheme exist to help organisations which provide services, activities or projects that benefit residents with the greatest needs. In particular, the Council wants to support projects, activities and services that are delivered with the help of volunteers.

You could try a traditional French Croissant or a Crepe made in front of you.

In addition, the Council also wants to receive applications for projects that will improve the health and wellbeing of local residents. Cllr Roddy Hogarth, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Grants, says: “Our community grants have enabled voluntary and charitable groups in the District the chance to improve the quality of life for many, especially our vulnerable, older and younger residents. “If you are interested or need extra advice then please do not hesitate in contacting us.” Eligible organisations have until Friday 24 November 2017 to apply for a grant of between £100 and £5,000 for which successful applicants will be notified in April 2018. Application packs can be requested by emailing grants@sevenoaks.gov.uk or by calling the Council on 01732 227000.

For lunch, some tasty French cheeses and baguette, or Tartiflette, a famous cheese, bacon and potato dish from the French Alps. For dinner why not cuisses de canard – tinned duck, ready to cook - just add potatoes and veg for a delicious French Meal, from the South West of France. Or you might prefer dry sausages and some olives for a light meal, with salad and sauces from the delicatessen stall. There are a lots of other stalls to choose from offering a wide selection of goods such as Provencal Soaps, Vintage music CD, bags and purses, basket ware, scarves, hats and so much more. The traders from «France at home» cross the Channel every week from France to hold their popular French Market in England.

Eden Valley Loyalty Card Scheme All our participating businesses are very happy to stamp your cards but don’t forget to ask for a stamp if you’re not offered one. Draws for the previous month are done at the monthly Eden Valley Chamber of Commerce members meetings. The latest winner for £50.00 of vouchers to spend at any participating retailer is: Joanne Stovold who received her stamps from Acupuncture in Eden and was presented with her vouchers by Stephen at Options Hair Salon (pictured left). Joanne said she was amazed when her card was drawn! When asked what she loved about Edenbridge, she noted the free parking which is great as she meets her daughter on a Saturday for a ‘mocha and massage’ and a mooch around the charity shops.

£50 worth of vouchers to be won each month!

Next time it could be you! How it works - Simply pick up a FREE Loyalty Card from any of the participating businesses and start collecting stamps.
