Note from the Editor... Dear Neighbours, As I’ve been putting the finishing touches to this issue, the sun has been blazing outside my office window, the sounds of children playing outside and lawn mowers must mean that summer is truly on it’s way! I’m delighted to present to you another jam-packed issue, full of interesting information and updates from around our community, and plenty of activities and events taking place in the What’s On guides for May and June. I’ve been having plenty of adventures of my own over the last couple of months, meeting new people, finding out more about what’s happening around our community and learning lots of new things. I’d like to say congratulations to the 1st Edenbridge Scouts for a super Quiz Night in March. I was there with my regular team, The Chamber Pots, and we came in fourth! We were all really very surprised with our achievement - the best result yet at one of these quizzes. The Scouts also managed to raise around £1200 from the event. I’ve been pleased to have had two local guests on my weekly radio show, The Community Show. Charlotte Moon, the new Learning & Outreach Office at Eden Valley Museum joined me and my new co-host, Ken Tymms, in the studio in March (show #96) to tell listeners all about a new initiative to encourage young people and children into museums and heritage centres across Kent. You can find out more on page 34 of this issue. It was then a delight to welcome Andrew Hutchinson, Chairman of the Chiddingstone Real Football Committee (show #98) to find out about this huge annual event which is now in it’s fifth year. You can find links to both podcasts on my show website www. thecommunityshow.net/past-shows If you enjoy art then you’ll enjoy the 2017 South East Open Studios (SEOS), an annual event which sees local artists opening their doors to the general public. One of our area’s hidden gems is Jessops Farm Studios in Bough Beech. In advance of SEOS, I went along to see an exhibition ‘Women Painting Women’ at Jessops and discovered this wonderful place and I really can’t wait to visit again during June. You can find out more on page 38. On Saturday 3rd June is the bi-annual Hospital Fête. Be sure to pop along and support your local hospital. Parking will be in Blossoms

Ideal Holiday Treats Holiday season is nearly here so be sure to book in your pre-holiday treatments before you jet off. Emma’s recommendations are: Waxing Using the Lycon Waxing method, you’ll find your waxing experience virtually pain free (perfect for the more sensitive areas). In fact this method is said to reduce discomfort by up to 50%! Fake Bake Tanning You know that feeling - you’ve arrived at your holiday destination and you can’t wait to get to the beach wearing your new bikini but you do feel a little self-conscious about your pasty skin which hasn’t seen much daylight since your last holiday. Well, prepare in advance by treating yourself to a Fake Bake tan at Eden Beauty Therapy which includes a full body scrub to give your skin a zing as well as looking awesome on your first day on the beach. This treatment takes 1 hour in the salon and then a further 6 hours to develop on the skin and lasts for between 5-10 days. You will have a tanned look while developing your own natural tan at the same time. Emma

The Great Stone Bridge Trust

helping organisations and groups across the area clubs, societies, schools and students. The amounts they provide can vary from as little as £100 to thousands of pounds. It really is dependent on the funding requirements and how it will benefit the people of our community.

Until recently, the Great Stone Bridge Trust of Edenbridge has kept quite a low profile in the area but now they want to make sure the local community knows about the trust if they need any help with funding. It’s not known the exact time the Trust was formed, it could be as early as 1511 when it was set up to care for the original stone bridge which crossed the River Eden. Legend has it that it was in response to complaints made by two ladies of the Parish who found it inconvenient to use the stepping stones previously provided. The trust was endowed with money and properties adjacent to the bridge to produce income for this purpose. It had to reserve funds for the repair and maintenance of the bridge but was also empowered to provide charitable assistance to the residents of the town, including educational grants to schools. Although no longer responsible for the maintenance of the bridge, in 1978 the Charity Commission permitted trustees to spend their income for the charitable benefit of the inhabitants of the Edenbridge Parish and from 1996 to make educational grants to individuals.

Individual funding may be required for equipment, travel, or books etc. for educational purposes. Someone may want to start up a community group and just needs some initial funding to get something up and running, or any other specific expenses or projects. The Trust also provides a number of annual revenue grants to help with ongoing running costs. The Great Stone Bridge Trust are a group of 11 local people, of whom two are nominated by the Town Council , coming from a diverse range of backgrounds. They are happy to give you assistance with applying for a grant and being local are able to come and visit you to discuss your requirements in person. The reason why the trust is now publicising itself more widely is because they want to ensure that any potential group, organisation or individual is aware that there is somewhere they can turn to if they are in need of funds for a good cause. For further information or to apply for a grant, please contact the Clerk to the Trustees, Mr Michael Ross either in writing to: Little Coombe, Coombe Hill Road, East Grinstead, RH19 4LY or via email: mross_GSB@yahoo.com or by telephone on 01342 321 753.

Last year the Trust awarded grants in the region of £60,000 to almost 50 local organisations, 32 | www.edenbridge-magazine.co.uk • info@edenbridge-magazine.co.uk • 01732 864 878

News from the Community Edenbridge Fuchsia & Pelargonium Society celebrate 50 years 1967 - 2017 “The Edenbridge Fuchsia & Pelargonium Society are celebrating their 50th year. It is an amazing achievement that this group, started by Ron Holmes and 5 others in 1967, is still going. Although numbers are not as high as they used to be, it still remains a very friendly and welcoming club. Most of our members are from Edenbridge and, we still have one member of the original six, Mr John Asquez. For the success and continuation of the club we have had to diversify.

at Rickards Hall, High Street, Edenbridge and welcome all non-members/visitors. There is always tea/coffee/biscuits and sometimes homemade cake and a raffle. Most importantly there is always a very warm welcome.

If you are interested in finding out more or We have a very varied and busy programme would like a programme for 2017 please each year normally but this year is extra special. contact Lorraine on 01732 700 209.” There are more trips and speakers organised. Submitted by Lorraine Harrington Our speakers are talking on totally different subjects from the ‘Blossom in Japan’ and ‘Fauna in Peru’ to more local places ‘The Best of Kent’ and ‘Wild Flowers in Kent’. These are just a taster of what we have on offer. Although many changes have taken place over the years, two things we stay true to are our coffee morning and annual summer show. The coffee morning is our main fund aiser and where all members come together to make it a fabulous success. Our summer show is where our members get to show off their Fuchsias and Pelargoniums they have been growing all year - it really is a spectacular sight. We have over 100 entries and the hall looks stunning. This show is where we showcase the club and serve lunches and afternoon teas, making it a very sociable event. We are having a fifty-year celebration garden party/luncheon for members, past speakers and VIP’s. Mr Jim Buttress will be attending and bringing his Autobiography which he will happily sign. We meet from February until October on the second and fourth Thursday each month 40 | www.edenbridge-magazine.co.uk • info@edenbridge-magazine.co.uk • 01732 864 878

News from the Community Matt Cox Memorial Pavilion at Edenbridge Cricket Club A fundraising campaign to replace and rebuild a sports pavilion in memory of a talented young sportsman who died suddenly has broken the £100,000 barrier. The major milestone in the Matt Cox Pavilion campaign by Edenbridge Cricket Club comes just 16 months after the star player tragically died. Matt lived for the weekend and for his cricket, having come up through the ranks to make it to the first XI at Edenbridge Cricket Club. He was about to start his final year at Reading University where he also played for the University cricket club when he died suddenly last summer, aged 21, having had an epileptic seizure during the night. Friends of Matt were the prime movers behind a campaign to raise funds for his beloved cricket club in his memory. When a fundraising drive of £2,500 for a new electronic scoreboard was quickly broken, the focus turned towards creating a more permanent and lasting community facility in his name. Now a new purpose-built pavilion is to be created which will promote access to sport for all as a lasting legacy to Matt. The desire is to create a facility which becomes a focus for the community and not just the cricket club.

alongside a bar, kitchen, function space and meeting rooms. Matt’s father Tim lives in East Grinstead and has been a member of Edenbridge Cricket Club for 40 years. He has been overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity shown. Tim commented: “The amount of money being raised is incredible – I would never have imagined that it would be sitting at more than £100,000 but this is testament to how highly Matt was thought of and how he touched the lives of others. Matt was an all-round sportsman, he loved football, hockey and rugby, but cricket was his main love and I think this is a most fitting way to remember him.” Edenbridge Cricket Club strives to promote the sport to all and in addition to its first and second XI which play in the Mid Sussex League, the club has a junior section with boys and girls teams. To donate to the Matt Cox JustGiving page please visit: www.justgiving.com/MattCox-1 For more information about Edenbridge Cricket Club visit edenbridge.hitscricket.com.

Having reached £100,000 through generous donations, a variety of fundraising events and charity nights, attention will turn to drawing in aid of Matt Cox Pavilion Fund down support from the major external funding Thursday 11 May - 7-10.30pm sources to realise the £250,000 required to Jubilee Centre, Charlwoods Rd, East Grinstead RH19 2HL provide enhanced sporting and community facilities in Edenbridge.
