The Edenbridge Magazine • March/April 2018

Note from the Editor... Dear Neighbours, I hope you’ve all had a good start to the year, despite the cold and wet weather we have had. I do love the beautiful skyscapes winter brings to the area. It’s been a tough job squeezing all the content into this issue and I’m sure you’ll notice that there are plenty of new advertisers who have come on board too. It seems there were few who escaped the horrid flu virus that was doing the rounds (and still is) and unfortunately I was not one of them so it was a very quiet end to 2017 and start to 2018 for me which felt most unusual. I was actually glad that the Forge Singers Panto, Jack and the Beanstalk, was a little later than usual so I was fully recovered when I had my first visit of the year to the WI Hall (if you've been reading this magazine for a while you'll already know that much of my local social life takes place there). Entertained? I most certainly was, a thoroughly enjoyable night out and probably my favourite panto so far. All the cast did a great job, the prompt was on top form but my favourite character of this particular production was Buttercup the cow (played by Nikki Sinclair). Well done to Directors Tracey Newbury and Di Kingham and of course the entire team who worked hard us to bring us this production.

The following week I was back at the WI Hall for another event, the annual Scout Quiz Night which saw the hall packed with quizzers and I was there with my team, The Chamber Pots. A great night was had by all and the Scouts raised £1,155.00 from the event. Thinking of events, I'm looking forward to this year's Edenbridge Motor Show and the date is Sunday 9th September at the usual venue of Gabriel's Farm. I have heard that one of the headline attractions is going to be Monster Trucks which will be taking the place of the helicopter rides. The Eden Valley Chamber of Commerce are already planning this big event and you can keep upto-date with the details on the motor show website - www.edenbridgemotorshow.co.uk. One of the big topics of discussion over the last several months has been the Lidl/Home Bargains planning application. I've been watching the action with great interest and both stores would certainly be an asset to the town and draw more people in. Of course by attracting more people 12 | www.edenbridge-magazine.co.uk • info@edenbridge-magazine.co.uk • 01732 864 878

The Edenbridge Magazine • March/April 2018 in would certainly mean increased traffic in the area. I am fully supportive of the application though and it would see more job opportunities for everyone. I'd like to thank the crossword sponsor for this issue, Ye Old Crown, who are giving away a 3-course meal for two (excluding drinks). Turn to page 40 for your chance to enter. Finally, our local museum is back open and you'll find some fascinating displays. It really is a hidden treasure and well worth visiting if you haven't been there before. I attended the official opening of the museum in February, opened by the Chairman of Sevenoaks District Council Larry Abraham (pictured right) and had an interesting browse through the exhibitions. You can find more information on page 22. Don’t forget, if you have any messages to the community or events that you would like included in future issues of this magazine, just email them to info@edenbridge-magazine.co.uk and I will include them. It’s free for all not-for-profit groups to have their information included here. As always, please do mention ‘The Edenbridge Magazine’ if you are responding to anything you’ve seen in this publication as it helps to secure it’s future and I hope you enjoy this issue as much as I have putting it together. Until next time...

Chiddingstone REAL Football Good Friday, 2 teams of 100, few rules, over a mile to each goal and 4 hours of play! The game begins when the ball is dropped into the starting field by a big digger and then the real mayhem begins. As well as plenty of fun and action, the organisers also raise money for local causes and this year the chosen charities are:  West Kent Mind  League of Friends of Edenbridge Hospital  Kent Surrey Sussex Air Ambulance For the last six years, Good Friday has been the date for the biggest football match in the area and it really is a spectacle to behold. The Chiddingstone Real Football match comprises of two teams of at least 100 players with goals over 1 mile apart, one outside The Castle Inn and the other outside The Rock. The game is a mixture of football and rugby and players compete over the fields, rivers and through woodland to reach the goals, without going over any boundaries. It’s not for the faint hearted either as it is a full contact sport. Although there are other Real Football matches which take place across the UK, this is the most southern event and draws huge crowds into the area.

The Teams The Castle Crusaders captained by Dan ‘The Slayer’ Rowland The Rock Inn Rollers captained by Adam ‘The Wood’ Ashworth After each match, the venue alternates for the live music and entertainment and this year you will find all the action outside The Castle Inn. All the fun starts at 2pm but you’ll find revellers arriving long before kick off for some pre-match fun and drinks. It certainly is a memorable afternoon and evening out. To find out more about the event, visit the website www.chiddingstonerealfootball.co.uk or keep up to date via the official Facebook page @ChiddRealFootball. Who will win this year?

News from the Community We Will Remember Them Major exhibition marking the 100th anniversary of the end of WW1 This exhibition marks the culmination of more than four years research into the stories of Eden Valley families whose lives were changed forever by one of the deadliest conflicts in human history. Following on from the ‘Till the Boys Come Home exhibition in 2014, the ‘We Will Remember Them’ exhibition records the names of those who lost their lives, the stories of those who survived and the impact on their families and loved ones. It focuses especially on the period of the Armistice in 1918 and the Peace Celebrations that followed in1919. All villages of the Eden Valley are represented and the museum would like to thank the various village representatives and other

individuals who have provided stories and other memorabilia for the exhibition, from as far and wide as Belgium, Canada and Australia. The ‘We Will Remember Them’ exhibition will run until June 2019 over the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Peace Treaty at Versailles on 28 June 1919. Guest Display During February and March the exhibition will be complemented with a guest display of Bruce Bairnsfather pottery and postcards featuring ‘Old Bill’, a curmudgeonly soldier with trademark walrus moustache and balaclava bringing a touch of humour through cartoons to the grim conditions being suffered by so many in the trenches. Riverford Home Delivery

Have you ever been such a big fan of a company that you ended up working with them? That’s exactly what happened to Sally Beare who runs the Tunbridge Wells area of Riverford Home Delivery. Sally had been a customer of Riverford’s for a number of years and when she decided the time was right to return to work after having her 3 children, this opportunity happened to land at her feet. It was not just the produce that made Sally a customer in the first place, she is totally behind the ethics of Riverford who grow much of the produce themselves on their organic farms in the UK (and now in France to extend seasonal supply). What they don’t grow themselves, they source from partner farms - always 100% organic - with whom they build fair, longlasting relationships. Riverford started 30 years ago when founder, Guy Watson, started delivering organic vegetables in his wheelbarrow to 30 local friends in Devon. They now deliver boxes to up to 50,000 customers each week.

For some of us, cooking does not come naturally (that’s me), and the idea of receiving a box full of veg that you might not necessarily have had before can be a little daunting. How should the items be stored? What is that leafy purple thing? How should these be cooked? Fear not, Riverford have thought of all this and have produced an A-Z guide of the veg they sell and next to each item is a ‘Store & prep’, ‘Cook’ and ‘Friends with’ section as well as information on when certain foods are in season. You’ll become a veg pro in no time with the easy to follow information. You can also find recipes on the website or, with your third order, you’ll receive your very own recipe book. Sally is also more than happy to share recipes with you. Excess packaging has been an issue for a long time and Riverford like to be as eco-friendly as possible and will re-use your empty boxes and re-use or recycle any other packaging you might have received with your order. They use much less packaging in the first place compared to supermarket organic produce. Delivery is free and Edenbridge customers receive their orders on a Friday. Don’t worry if you’re not in to receive your delivery - just tell Riverford where to leave it. If you’d like to find out more about Riverford Organic Farmers and the products available, visit their website at www.riverford.co.uk or call the farm on 01803 227 227 or speak to Sally direct on 01892 576 991.

It’s not just fruit and vegetables that Riverford are able to deliver but their range also includes organic meat and dairy products, drinks (including wine) and there is an online Farm Shop selling many other organic delights. There is no contract so you can either order on a regular basis or just for special occasions. You can choose from set fruit and veg boxes or create your own bespoke orders (minimum order £15.00). 26 | www.edenbridge-magazine.co.uk • info@edenbridge-magazine.co.uk • 01732 864 878

News from the Community Matt Cox Community Pavilion Update

“2017 was a great year of progress on the Matt Cox Community Pavilion project: Funding 2017 was another superb year for fundraising for the pavilion and the Club is indebted to members and friends for their incredible generosity. The amount of the funds we have raised ourselves now has reached an amazing £123,000. To reach such an enormous amount in just two years is a fantastic achievement – it’s almost £170 per day! To that, we can add the further amount of £197,000 received and promised from external grant providers, including the ECB, Sport England, the Great Stone Bridge Trust, Kent County Council, Edenbridge Town Council and others. So we already have a total ‘committed’ amount of £320,000 – and the fundraising continues! Building Project The building project also made great strides during 2017 but we also hit some hurdles that have to be overcome before we are able to ‘break ground’ on the new construction.

As a result we have now moved into a second round of tendering where we are actively working with two selected partners to reduce costs and bring the project closer to the expected budget. This is inevitably impacting the timelines and delaying the project. What are the Implications? In terms of timing, we still intend to build the new pavilion in 2018 but it is now unlikely that the new building will be completed for the start of the season in May. Once we have finalised the costs and appointed the building contractor, we will need to go back to Sevenoaks District Council to address the planning conditions attached to the permission. This process is expected to take another six to eight weeks. It is possible that the new build could start in the spring and continue into the cricket playing season, or we may prefer for the new build to start toward the end of the cricket season, completing in the autumn. From a funding perspective, as stated above, we have raised a fantastic £320,000 so far, against an original budgeted build cost of £350,000. It is therefore imperative that we continue to work hard and maintain the fund raising efforts throughout 2018 to meet the increased funding gap we will face. While every effort is being made to bring the build costs closer to the original budget, more money will be required and all avenues for new grants will be pursued alongside our own efforts. We are confident that this shortfall will be met through a combination of means. We look forward to turning all the plans into reality in 2018 and would wish to thank you all again for your generous support.”
