The Edenbridge Magazine • March/April 2017

Note from the Editor... Dear Neighbours, 2017 is moving along at a fast pace already and the What’s On pages are getting busier with activities and events organised for the coming months. Before we know it we’ll be enjoying the spring bulbs and the ever changing countryside that surrounds us. I’d like to thank everyone for their feedback on the new look magazine, it really is appreciated and I’ve been delighted with how positive it’s all been. I know some of the regular readers will be wondering what decision I made with regards to the crosswords. Following an influx of comments from regular crossword solvers, I was dismayed to hear that it wasn’t being enjoyed anymore and was ‘boring’ and ‘uninspiring’. You’ll be pleased to see that I’ve got a different style of crossword and I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed that the entries will come flooding in again. I can’t mention the crossword without mentioning the crossword sponsor so thank you to The King and Queen in Edenbridge High Street for giving away a 3-course meal for two in their restaurant (prize excludes drinks). Turn to page 50 in this issue for the puzzle and entry form. For me the festive season never feels truly over until The Forge Singers have performed their Panto. This year was another fantastic peformance from the group and members from all ages (there were some teeny-tiny Forge performers on stage) as they presented their adapation of ‘Cinderella’ at the WI Hall. Well done to everyone for their super performances, and not forgetting those who worked hard behind the scenes. The Ugly Sisters had me laughing so much that I left the hall with an aching jaw. Bravo!

Next up to take the stage at the Edenbridge WI Hall is The Edenbridge Players performing ‘Duets - four romantic comedies’ at the end of April. You can find more information on page 13 of this issue. Another group of fabulous, local talent! I’ve also been very appreciative of the feedback from listeners of my weekly show, The Community Radio Show. I know there are quite a few of you here in Edenbridge (it certainly helps having a magazine to promote it in). The show is all about community, charity and fundraising and is a great accompanient to having my community magazines. I have a fantastic time meeting new people, leaning about new things and developing my skills in the way of radio production. One local charity who have been on the show a couple of times already is ellenor, providing care and support for families facing terminal illness. Much of the care they provide 14 | www.edenbridge-magazine.co.uk • info@edenbridge-magazine.co.uk • 01732 864 878

The Edenbridge Magazine • March/April 2017 is in the homes of patients using their team of nurses, providing care for babies right through to the elderly. I recently paid a visit to their hospice in Gravesend and learned so much more than what I’ve been able to cover on my show. Their work and services are supported by so many volunteers, all doing their bit to support the charity. They have a super charity shop in Westerham selling second hand designer fashions and I have picked up some great bargains there.

A fairy garden creates magic for younger patients and visitors to the ellenor hospice in Gravesend.

It’s amazing what can be achieved when everyone just does a little bit - I’ve followed the story of Flo’s Fight, a tragic story of a little girl desperately requiring cancer treatment in the United States. A staggering amount of money has already been raised and my thoughts and prayers are with Flo and her family as they continuing fighting together. You can find full information on the appeal at www.flosfight.com. As always, please do mention ‘The Edenbridge Magazine’ if you are responding to anything you’ve seen in this publication as it helps to secure it’s future. Until next time....

The Edenbridge Magazine • March/April 2017

Edenbridge WI Hall needs your support and it would be difficult to find many residents who have not been to at least one event in the hall during their time in the town. It is home to many clubs and organisations including Eden Nursery, Edenbridge Players, Forge Singers and fitness and dance classes as well as the many community events that take place such as quiz nights, live music nights and private parties. The iconic building on Station Road in Edenbridge, built in 1934, is in desperate need of your support. Managed by the Edenbridge Town Village Hall Charity Committee, members are looking for help in raising £50k in order to bring the building into the 21st Century. The committee are already busy applying for funding from as many places as they can and while the amount they want to raise is a tall order, they believe it is achievable in order to save this fantastic facility that has been serving the community for many years. The main work that the committee want to get cracking on with is updating the inside of the hall as it can get very cold during the winter months for hall users and installing new PVCu windows, ceiling and roof insulation, new tiles and full redecoration would improve the temperature, making it a warm and inviting facility. It is a facility that is well used on a regular basis

The main hall can accommodate a closely seated audience of 150 or for events which include tables about 120. The adjoining kitchen is equipped with fridge freezer, commercial dishwasher and a full range of cutlery and crockery. Hire of the hall and facilities is managed by Edenbridge Town Council who are very supportive of the committee’s plans for improvements to the hall. If you’d like to help support your local village hall, private and corporate donations would be extremely welcome to ensure this wonderful asset remains in the community. Please contact Jim Burbridge on 01732 866 787 to find out how you can donate. To hire the WI Hall contact: 01732 865 368 or email lindsey@edenbridgetowncouncil.gov.uk Address: Station Road, Edenbridge, TN8 5LX Website: www.edenbridgevillagehall.org Facebook: @EdenbridgeWIHall

Participants will lunch on the riverbed of the Draa, camp at the oasis and climb L’erg Laher - one of the highest dunes in the region. For more information about joining the ellenor Sahara Trek, contact Hayley Brown on 01474 320 007, email hayley.brown@ellenor.org or visit the website www.ellenor.org.
