The Edenbridge Magazine • September/October 2018

Note from the Editor... Dear Neighbours, Thud! And here we are, almost into September. While the children are busy preparing for a new school year, maybe starting at a new school, there are many people busying themselves organising events for the community. The first big event we have coming up is The Edenbridge Motor Show on Sunday 9th September at Gabriel's Showground (where the car boot fairs are held at the south end of town). This will be the fifth year the event has been organised by members of the Eden Valley Chamber of Commerce and it's going to be bigger and better than ever. For the first time there will be live entertainment on stage throughout the afternoon and I'll also be the compère for the day, a challenge I'm really looking forward to. Leisure Pursuits will be bringing their Monster Truck for rides and headlining the stage acts are Noel McCalla and Derek Nash performing the music of Stevie Wonder. See page 19 for further information or visit the website www. edenbridgemotorshow.co.uk. As many readers know, I do enjoy so much all my involvement in the local community and I'm also looking forward to this year's big bonfire event on Saturday 3rd November. The various committees which make up the Edenbridge Bonfire Society are already busy planning the event and this year are celebrating 90 years! I've been meeting with the communications committee to look at promotion of the event (pictured). I'm also delighted to say I will be live streaming the procession via the society's Facebook page again this year so those of you who cannot make the event will be able to watch it live (technology permitting of course). Keep up to date with all the latest bonfire news via the website www.edenbridgebonfire.co.uk. L-R Andrea Deans, Carly Wackett, Paul Furst, Sue Pace & me :-)

So, what have I been up to since the last issue? One of my highlights was flying a radio controlled aeroplane when I paid a visit to the Riddlesdown Model Aeroplane Club at their base in Edenbridge. Yes, they really did let me take control of the plane you see pictured right. Did I crash it? You can find out all about my experience on page 32. 14 | www.edenbridge-magazine.co.uk • info@edenbridge-magazine.co.uk • 01732 864 878

The Edenbridge Magazine • September/October 2018 I never seem to be out of the WI Hall for too long and in June I was there for the latest performance by the Forge Singers Amateur Dramatics Group, "Olde Tyme/New Time Music Hall". It was another super evening of entertainment. I've been seeing their performances for years and it's always nice to see new members joining and performing alongside the regular faces. Well done to all those involved for a super selection of songs, spectacular costumes and of course lots of laughs (I'm not sure if I always laugh in the right places but I always have a good time). My date for the evening, Joe Taylor, thoroughly enjoyed himself and was singing along to most of the songs, as were many others in the audience. I always think we're so lucky living in a town where there is always something fun to do or be a part of. If you're new to the area then check out some of the local events and performances or you might even find a group that you'd like to get more involved in. Or why not organise your next 'date night' at the WI Hall ;-)

I would like to thank the Prize Crossword Sponsor, Hever Hotel, who are giving the lucky winner of the crossword an overnight stay at the hotel on a bed and breakfast basis. It's a fantastic prize as I've been lucky enough to stay overnight at the hotel myself. The facilities are lovely and the breakfast selection the next day was superb. Turn to pages 35-36 and start solving the clues to be in with a chance of winning! One final thing before I sign off for another issue, keep your eyes open for the new Eden Valley Chamber of Commerce logo which you'll start seeing in many places. The Chamber was delighted to have local graphic designer and chamber member Sarah Medway come up with the new branding. It's first major outing will be at the Motor Show. If you're a local business and you'd like to find out more about your local Chamber, visit the website www.edenvalleychamber.org.uk. As always, please do mention ‘The Edenbridge Magazine’ if you are responding to anything you’ve seen in this publication as it helps to secure it’s future and I hope you enjoy this issue as much as I have putting it together. Until next time... It's a spectacle which has been entertaining our town for years...90 years to be precise as the Edenbridge Bonfire Society are celebrating just that with this year's BIG event which is being held on Saturday 3rd November (make a note in your diaries now before you carry on reading so you don't forget!) It's become Kent's most famous bonfire celebration primarily because for the last 20 years the local bonfire society has been poking fun at infamous celebrities. Each year a giant 11m tall effigy is created by the talented team which stands alongside another giant effigy of Guy Fawkes (pictured below right) and on the night they are set alight at the start of the huge fireworks display. Past targets have included Harvey Weinstein, Donald Trump, Katie Hopkins and Lance Armstrong. It's not all about the giant effigy, although this is what encourages all the media interest in our town during the run up to Bonfire Night, but it's about all the activities which take place before the main event. It's an event which local schools, pubs, community groups all take seriously and you'll find various members of our community busy constructing floats and costumes for the big torch-lit procession.

Edenbridge Bonfire Society is one of two societies in Kent who are included in the Sussex Bonfire Calendar, and the bonfire season runs from the beginning of September through to the end of November. It may seem odd to start the bonfire season so early but this gives all the local societies their chance to have the spotlight on their individual events. Members of the Edenbridge Bonfire Society can be found at a number of the other bonfire events during the season, traditionally dressed in their choirboy outfits, to provide support to the other societies as well as having a fantastic time and fun social evening out. The Edenbridge Bonfire Society is a notfor-profit organisation and each year raises more than £5,000 for local charities. As the procession passes by you'll hear the rattle of collection boxes along the route, so be sure to have plenty of change in your pockets to donate to local causes. Putting on such an event is no small task and on the night itself a team of over 100 volunteers work hard to stage the event. The Bonfire Society is also grateful for the support it receives from local businesses who donate money to ensure the tradition continues. You can keep up to date with all the developments in the run up to this year's event, including information on road closures, by visiting the website, www. edenbridgebonfire.co.uk, or following them on Facebook or Twitter.

Thousands of people attend the event to watch the procession as it goes through the town centre, twice, just so you don't miss anything and it culminates at the recreation ground. As well as the local groups taking part, Edenbridge also has other visiting Bonfire Societies joining in the procession and 26 | www.edenbridge-magazine.co.uk • info@edenbridge-magazine.co.uk • 01732 864 878

Feature: Riddlesdown Model Aeroplane Club You may think it odd that I've decided to include a feature on a club from Riddlesdown... but don't be fooled by the name. This Model Aeroplane Club actually meet up at a field in the Edenbridge area twice a week to enjoy their hobby of flying model aircraft. They are a small, well supported, sociable and very welcoming radio controlled flying club. They originally began in 1974 where they flew from a patch of land at the top of Riddlesdown, near Purley. From there they moved to a farm in Dormansland in the 80s and since last year have been flying from Edenbridge. Most members fly fix-wing models, whether powered by electric or glow engine, although they do have members who fly rotary, both helicopters and multi-rotor. For those who are new to the hobby, you'll find several of the members who are capable of, and familiar with, teaching radio controlled flying using a tandem/buddy box system where two transmitters are joined together. This means that if you do get into trouble your instructor can take back control and save any damage to the plane. There is a club examiner so when you're ready you can take the British Model Flying Association (BMFA) Achievement scheme's Basic Proficiency or A Test. Stephen Fysh, committee member, invited me along to give radio controlled flying a go and I was very glad when he explained the buddy box system as I was a little nervous with the thought of what might happen if it went wrong, particularly after learning that it can take up to a year to learn to fly one of these planes. Stephen taught me a few basic manoeuvres in the air, made a little terrifying by the gusts of wind which kept taking control of the plane, but I managed a few turns with the assistance of Stephen on the tandem control. It was good fun and the members made me feel very welcome.

models has come a long way since the club started and now is a great time to get involved in this hobby. There is a wide variety of kits available at reasonable prices, many of which are part pre-built and require minimal time or experience to complete. They offer a quick and relatively cheap way to get in the air and the quality of the construction, technology and detailing has improved immeasurably over recent years. Some members also build more complex models, solely from plans, creating impressive scale planes, often with bespoke design and engineering features, and are more than happy to share this knowledge by providing handson help and advice to any aspiring builders whatever their level. With small membership there is rarely any waiting time to get into the air and their site offers a generous runway, largely untroubled by trees or other intrusions. They also enjoy on-site BBQs and have use of a caravan should the weather turn and shelter is needed. The club also run a number of competitions throughout the summer months as well as fun challenges for members. So, whether you are an experienced flyer or just have an interest in perhaps taking up this hobby, the club would be delighted to hear from you.
