Note from the Editor... Dear Neighbours, Where does the time go? It feels like only a few days ago I was putting together the last issues and now here we are and summer is finally upon us, the flowers are coming out and the grass is needing a lot of mowing to keep it under control. I've been trying my hand at making Elderflower cordial for the first time which has been a fun little project and the first batch hasn't been too bad. I think I might move onto Elderflower Champagne next! On the topic of flowers, I attended the Chelsea Flower Show this year and was impressed to see how many local companies had been involved in the design and supply of some of the show gardens there were. As always, there hasn't been much time for twiddling my thumbs as life seems to be moving at an extremely fast pace these days. Regular readers will know that my Thursdays are taken up with radio show duties and I want to congratulate Joseph Wooltorton who has been doing a sterling job these last couple of months as co-host on my radio show The Community Show. On my weekly show I have guests who fall into either: Community, Charity or Fundraising and I'm always so inspired by the people I have in the studio. We recently had the Young Lives Foundation in the studio who do a huge amount of work to help support some of the most disadvantaged children across Kent. We were also joined by Carl Lewis from Tonbridge who last year raised over £35k for the Tonbridge Poppy Appeal. L-R Joseph Wooltorton, Keith Mabbut (Street Soccer Foundation), Stephen Gray (Young Lives Foundation), Steve Wolfe (Kent Sports Trust) & me :-)

Special edition Royal British Legion ducks take over!

Of course I love to feature local groups and organisations from my own local area so if you'd like to share your story or tell listeners about your cause or event, I'd love to hear from you. Please drop me an email to team@thecommunityshow.net. You can tune in every Thursday between 10-11am at www.channelradio.co.uk/two. I love it when I come across really positive things happening in and around our area and I recently discovered Edenbridge Rock Painting. It's really taken the area by storm and I think it's having such a positive impact on our local community for both the young and older residents 12 | www.edenbridge-magazine.co.uk • info@edenbridge-magazine.co.uk • 01732 864 878

The Edenbridge Magazine • July/August 2018 and visitors here. You can read more about this craze on page 42 and how you can join in with the fun. A couple of months ago I was at the Sevenoaks Run, Walk, Push against Dementia at Knole Park. It was the second year this event has been held and money raised by entrants as for the Sevenoaks Area Dementia Friendly Community who provide funding for the Forget-me-not Café which runs the last Friday of every month at the Eden Centre from 10.30am to 12noon. It was a beautiful day and hundreds of people came to support dementia services in the area. You can find more information about the Forget-me-not Cafés on the website www.forgetmenotcafe.org.uk. Over the next couple of months there will be much activity taking place with the organisation of the 5th Edenbridge Motor Show which takes place at Gabriel's Farm on Sunday 9th September from 10am until 4pm. The event is organised by the Eden Valley Chamber of Commerce and this year we will be treated to the Monster Trucks as well as a field full of fabulous cars, motorcycles and, for the first time, there will be a music festival on the main stage in the afternoon. You also get me as compère for the event which I am really looking forward to. I love cars (although you don't need to love cars to enjoy this show) and was recently in Holland on a vintage car rally which was huge amounts of fun. Here I am pictured in front of a 1904 Elmore (it would have been the oldest car in this particular rally if it hadn't broken down on the way to the start line) with Joe Taylor (right) and car owner Mark Eichner (left) Before I go, I would like to thank the Prize Crossword Sponsor, Relyon Cars, who are giving the lucky winner of the crossword a £30.00 voucher in this issue. They are celebrating 50 years in business this year. Happy Birthday Relyon! As always, please do mention ‘The Edenbridge Magazine’ if you are responding to anything you’ve seen in this publication as it helps to secure it’s future and I hope you enjoy this issue as much as I have putting it together. Until next time...

Louise Hooper Landscape Architect and Landscape Planner Louise was born and grew up in Penshurst. She was fortunate to return to live there twenty years ago with her family after spending 15 years in Hong Kong and Singapore. Louise studied landscape architecture in Edinburgh which included 4 years at university and 2 years of professional practice working under a qualified landscape architect. In Hong Kong, her projects ranged from power stations to a Town Square and culminated in 2 years working on Metroplan, an ambitious land-use and transport study of HK’s urban area. Returning to the United Kingdom, Louise started working for the newly formed Medway Unitary Authority as Senior Landscape Architect. She helped to set up a Medwaywide Landscape and Urban Character Assessment. This covered the urban area, villages, urban fringe and countryside within Medway. Other projects included a series of playgrounds and school grounds and the design of Riverside Country Park. Louise continues to provide Medway with landscape advice on their major planning applications. Louise set up Louise Hooper Landscape Architect in 2001. Project work has grown steadily, much of it by word of mouth. Louise has designed and built playgrounds for Special Needs Schools in South London, and locally, has designed parks, playing fields and playgrounds at Hawkenbury, Tunbridge Wells, and Rusthall.

houses adjacent to Ancient Woodland in Bexley, London, and farm barn conversions in Speldhurst. Louise has had successful planning appeals on behalf of a rare breed pig farmer in the High Weald AONB, and appealing against a proposed new house within a Conservation Area in Sevenoaks. She is currently working on several private gardens and Landscape and Visual Impact Assessments for solar arrays, housing developments and individual houses and extensions. ‘I love living and working in the beautiful Kent countryside. Every project is different and I love the challenges of each and every individual site. Each client has his or her own view as to what they believe is required; I like to take that view and improve upon it, so that the client ends up with something better than they thought they wanted! This does not mean more expense: flowers and nectar for bees and butterflies, nuts and berries for dormice and birds, rain gardens and swales for sustainable drainage; materials are sourced from local suppliers wherever possible, to reduce carbon footprint and promote local business. Finally, I aim to create a beautiful design that comes to life at different times of the year, offering scent, colour, texture and delight as well as form and function.’ Louise can be contacted via her website: www. louisehooper.co.uk, by email: lhla@btinternet. co.uk and by telephone: 01892 870 211 and 07711 820 575. She posts regularly on Facebook and Instagram @louisehooperlandscapearchitect.

Recent projects have included the University of Kent Masterplan working with Studio Engleback, a primary school playground at Offham, Kent, a rainwater-harvesting lake for a strawberry farmer near Canterbury, 5 32 | www.edenbridge-magazine.co.uk • info@edenbridge-magazine.co.uk • 01732 864 878

News from the Community 20mph speed limit proposal Edenbridge Town Council and Kent Highways are considering installing a 20mph speed limit in the High Street. Research and evidence has demonstrated clear benefits from lowering speed limits in residential areas. In line with this, over the last decade, more and more highway authorities have proceeded to implement 20mph speed limits within their boundaries.

At the same time, the Town Council is considering making a one-way entrance to the Market Yard Car Park from the High Street.  Bollards will be removed so vehicles can enter the Market Yard from the High Street  A protected safe walking route installed  The Market will be relocated within car park  There will be no loss of parking spaces  No change to the access from Forge Croft

 improve the shopping experience  improve road safety  discourage passing through traffic  encourage walking and cycling  improve the local environment

It is also looking to help people find their way around the town, with High Street Wayfinders signs linking the areas of interest and encouraging walking. What are your suggestions for Wayfinders signs; what designs, colours, images, etc. would you like; what locations and landmarks do you think are important in Edenbridge? All ideas welcome!

Kent County Councillor Peter Lake and MP Tom Tugendhat are in support of the scheme.

For further information, please contact Christine Lane, Town Clerk, 01732 865 368.
